- Chapter 5 - The Frail and Sickly Hostage (5)
“Your Highness, what are you saying? Just tell me, there is no need for such formalities as ‘begging’.”
Li Qing turned, entered the room, and hurriedly wrote a letter with paper and brush. After sealing it, he handed it to Dr. Lin: “I must trouble you, Dr. Lin, to deliver this letter to my mother the Consort upon your return to the Yun Kingdom.”
The letter contained nothing suspicious; even if someone else were to see it, it would not matter. The original owner and Consort Xian had created a secret code between them long ago. Consort Xian was intelligent and would surely be able to decipher his hints.
Dr. Lin solemnly took the letter: “Your Highness, rest assured. My junior fellow apprentice serves as an imperial physician in the palace; he will certainly be able to deliver this letter safely into the hands of Consort Xian.”
After they chatted for a while, Dr. Lin saw that the evening was growing late. He took the prescription Qin Lang had written, sent someone out to have the herbs fetched, and went into the small kitchen himself to prepare the decoction.
Li Qing: “…” Thank you, but I really don’t want to drink it.
After downing the bitter medicinal broth in one gulp, Li Qing sat on the daybed, feeling gloomy and stuffing candied fruits into his mouth one after another.
Finally, he was stopped by Dr. Lin: “Your Highness, do not eat so many sweets. Next is the medicinal bath, which you must soak in for at least half an hour. I will go out now; Your Highness, please hurry.”
Dr. Lin left, carrying the small bag of candied fruits. In the room, the wooden tub filled with hot water was releasing wafts of medicinal scent.
Slender fingers unfastened his robes.
Amidst the hazy steam,
he draped his clothes piece by piece over the screen.
Li Qing slowly sat into the tub, his ink-black hair draped casually outside the rim.
His fair, flawless skin
was flushed a soft crimson by the heat,
and the alluring charm at the corners of his eyes became even more prominent…
The water was too hot. Li Qing frowned slightly, his eyes closed tightly, enduring the way the medicinal water washed over his body.
Drip…
Li Qing opened his eyes and saw a drop of blood fall into the medicinal tub, slowly dispersing. What is that?
He looked up and saw a hole the size of a human head in the ceiling. Feng Yanzhou was pinching his nose, staring at him unblinkingly.
Li Qing: “…” You petty thief!!
“Get out—!”
Feng Yanzhou chuckled: “Qingqing, you are bathing in here, yet there is no one guarding the door. Only those two people at the courtyard entrance what use are they? What if some scoundrel breaks in to take advantage of you? Those two good-for-nothings would never be able to stop them!”
Li Qing did not want to answer. It was normal that the original owner was not favored and had no one to look after him. Besides, wasn’t the only “scoundrel” here you? A thief calling “thief” to catch a thief!
Seeing that he had pushed his luck far enough, Feng Yanzhou didn’t dare to anger him further and used his qinggong (light-body skill) to leave.
A while later, he returned and sat cross-legged at the room’s entrance, silently admiring the moon, guarding his treasure.
Although Li Qing was very angry about Feng Yanzhou’s appearance, he strictly followed the doctor’s orders and only climbed out after soaking for the full duration. Once he had finished his bath and was preparing to go out to call someone to take away the wooden tub, he opened the door and almost stepped on Feng Yanzhou: “Why haven’t you left yet?”
Seeing that he was wearing only thin sleeping robes, Feng Yanzhou’s brow furrowed tightly. He scooped Li Qing up with one arm, brought him into the room, and tucked him into the quilt: “You went out wearing so little; have you forgotten how seriously ill you are?”
Pinned by Feng Yanzhou’s shoulders, Li Qing was unable to move: “Let go!”
“I won’t!”
“I told you to let go!”
“I said I won’t!”
(It was an elementary-school-style bickering session.)
“Someone! Catch the thief!”
Unfortunately, his room was too far from the courtyard gate, and his voice wasn’t loud enough; the guards who were dozing off at the entrance didn’t hear him.
Feng Yanzhou’s brow furrowed even deeper, and his tone was filled with anger: “Is this how the Yun Kingdom Emperor treats you? A dignified Sixth Prince, and you have no hidden guards, no attendants the servants don’t care about you at all! Today it is fortunate that it was me; if someone else had appeared here, you could have been abducted and no one would even know!”
Li Qing: “…” Why are you so angry? It’s none of your business.
Feng Yanzhou turned his head and said in a low voice: “Shadow One, Shadow Two!”
Two black shadows instantly appeared in the room, kneeling on one knee before the bed: “Master.”
“You are responsible for protecting Qingqing. Remember, from now on, he is your only master; you are not allowed to defy him in any way!”
“We obey your orders!”
Li Qing: “…” Big brother, I plan to run away later; how am I supposed to escape with them around?
Pinching Feng Yanzhou’s arm as if to vent his frustration, he gritted his teeth and said: “You and these two shadows all of you, get out of here right now!”
Shadow One and Shadow Two obeyed and left, hiding in the shadows to protect their new master.
Feng Yanzhou helped tuck in Li Qing’s quilt: “I can go out, but only after you have fallen asleep.”
Li Qing had never been angry with anyone before; meeting Feng Yanzhou felt like he had used up ten thousand years’ worth of anger. He asked helplessly: “What exactly do you like about me, Your Majesty? I can change it.”
“I like that you don’t like me. Try changing that!”
Li Qing: “…” Are you stuck in a bug? Can you not understand human language?
Knock, knock, knock…
Dr. Lin knocked on the door exactly on time, coincidentally rescuing Li Qing.
“Your Highness, have you finished your bath? I still need to perform acupuncture on you; please do not fall asleep just yet.”
Feng Yanzhou smiled and ruffled his hair: “It’s a pity I can’t watch Qingqing fall asleep, but I’ll go for now and come back to see you tomorrow.”
Using his qinggong, Feng Yanzhou quickly returned to the palace. He sat in the imperial study, solemnly dealing with the mountain of memorials. After a long while, he leaned back against the dragon throne, closing his eyes to rest for a moment.
The small palace maid grinding the ink seized the opportunity to fall into his arms: “Your Majesty, the night is deep; let me serve you…”
Feng Yanzhou opened his eyes, a look of rage in them, and slapped her away with one palm; the small maid collapsed on the ground in pain.
“Gao Yuan!”
The Head Eunuch, Gao, trotted in. Seeing the maid on the ground, he immediately understood what had happened. This was not the first time; he knew how to handle it and knelt down to beg for mercy: “I was negligent in my supervision. I hope Your Majesty will quell your anger. This new palace servant did not understand the rules; I will take her out to be beaten to death.”
Feng Yanzhou silently acquiesced to Gao’s approach. Ever since he had ascended the throne, the Prince of Li had been watching like a tiger, and the courtiers had their own varied agendas; spies would appear in the palace from time to time. Perhaps it was his mania affecting his temperament, but he couldn’t be bothered to investigate who was behind it he would just kill them as they came; sooner or later, he would kill them until they didn’t dare to act rashly!
However, in front of Li Qing, he seemed able to suppress his emotions. Mainly, he was a little worried that he might accidentally lose his temper and frighten him. The master had said his “fated person” would ease his illness and gradually turn him into a normal person. Was this what they meant by “everything has a natural restraint”? If so, he accepted it gladly.
As the maid was being dragged away, crying and screaming, Feng Yanzhou suddenly changed his mind near the door: “That’s enough. Give her a few strokes and cast her out of the palace.”
I hope my past sins will not affect Li Qing.
I am willing to lay down the butcher’s knife for you, only asking that you be free from illness and disaster…
Li Qing didn’t know that Feng Yanzhou was on the verge of becoming a saint for his sake. He was currently being needled by Dr. Lin like a little hedgehog, unable to move much, and could only secretly reach out to grab the candied fruits at Dr. Lin’s waist.
Dr. Lin: “…” I am old, not blind. I can see you.
“Sigh, Your Highness has such a childish temperament; how will you ever survive in the palace of the Ning Kingdom in the future?”
Li Qing couldn’t care less: “I never intended to live that long anyway.”
