- Chapter 11 - The Frail Hostage (11)
Feng Yanzhou spent his days in the palace bickering with ministers, imposing fines, and engaging in power struggles with the King of Li, leaving his temper increasingly volatile. He felt like kicking any stray dog that crossed his path.
Li Qing, however, was quite content. He spent his journey eating and sightseeing, his mood unaffected by his poor health. On the 20th day of the first lunar month, he arrived at the Yun Kingdom’s border.
That was where he encountered the heroine.
The heroine, Tian Yue’er, was disguised as a man, her business ventures having reached as far as the Yun Kingdom. While near the border, she inadvertently provoked some bandits, who discovered her true gender and nearly caused her harm.
It just so happened that Li Qing was eating wontons at a roadside stall when he saw her being dragged into a small alley by several burly men, one of whom was covering her mouth.
A blue holographic screen appeared before him:
【Heroine Tian Yue’er, 18 years old, transmigrated from the modern world four years ago. She is the legitimate daughter of the Ning Kingdom’s Grand Tutor, but because of a ruthless stepmother, she is largely neglected.
Three years ago, she began feigning illness, frequently hiding in her courtyard for months at a time. Rumors spread that she was frail and sickly, so no one dared to seek her hand in marriage.
In reality, she frequently ventured out in male disguise to expand her business empire. She has opened many restaurants with a modern flair that are quite popular ten in the Ning Kingdom and two in the Yun Kingdom and she holds significant assets.
She has known the male lead for half a year, but after being provoked by a supporting female character, the two are currently in the middle of a cold war.】
Li Qing had no desire to become overly involved with the heroine. Once Ying Yi finished saving her, he did not linger. He delivered her to the destination she requested and returned to the wonton stall to continue his meal. After finishing, he boarded his carriage and promptly put the heroine out of his mind.
Yun Kingdom Imperial Capital.
He Zhangzhi returned home quickly after the morning court session. With so many matters to attend to in court, the Prime Minister had no time to spare; he entered his study to work without even eating breakfast.
He opened the door only to see someone sitting inside. He Zhangzhi gasped, “!!!”
Li Qing waved like a beckoning cat. “Uncle, long time no see.”
He Zhangzhi hurried into the room, quickly turned around to shut the door, and walked over to Li Qing, scolding him in a hushed voice:
“That letter brought by Dr. Lin might have fooled others, but it could not hide the truth from me. As soon as the news came back, I guessed you had faked your death! Since you were dead, you should have stayed far away why come back here?!”
Li Qing sat in the seat of honor, sipping tea leisurely. He replied honestly, “I came to save my mother.”
He Zhangzhi let out a cold snort, flicked his sleeves, and sat in an adjacent chair. “You can barely protect yourself, yet you think of saving others! You overestimate your abilities. Get out at once. Today, I will pretend I never saw you. If you show yourself again, don’t blame me for reporting you to the Emperor!”
Li Qing handed him a cup of tea and smiled brightly. “I lack a place to stay. How about I stay at your home for the time being, Uncle?”
He Zhangzhi: “…” He really didn’t consider himself an outsider. “The Prime Minister’s residence is too small to accommodate a ‘Great Buddha’ like the Sixth Prince. Look for somewhere else!”
“I don’t necessarily need your permission, Uncle. I can just stay here secretly at night.”
He Zhangzhi rolled his eyes. “Who did you learn this pestering behavior from!”
Li Qing: “…” He had been corrupted by a certain thick-skinned fellow.
He Zhangzhi eventually agreed to let Li Qing stay at the Prime Minister’s residence under the guise of being a distant relative, housed in the most secluded courtyard of the estate.
Ying Er’s talent for disguise was superb. Li Qing went in and out of the Prime Minister’s residence for several days in a row, yet no one discovered his true identity.
One day, as Li Qing returned from the street with bags full of goods, he bumped into He Zhangzhi, who was about to head out. He Zhangzhi was nearly driven to death by this nephew; he had promised to come back to save people, yet he spent his days eating and playing like a dissolute young master.
“What exactly are you planning?”
Li Qing stuffed a pastry from his hand into his mouth. “My identity is a distant relative of the Prime Minister, someone pampered since childhood who loves to eat, drink, and have fun. Naturally, I have to play the part convincingly.”
He Zhangzhi raised his hand but then lowered it; his own health was too weak to strike anyone. “Stay put! I’ll deal with you when I get back!”
Li Qing watched the Prime Minister’s retreating figure with a complex expression. In the original plot, the Prime Minister had treated the original owner terribly, but since his arrival, the Prime Minister did not seem to have been overly harsh in fact, he had helped him quite a bit.
“Cough, cough, cough… cough, cough, cough…”
Ying Er frowned as he patted Li Qing’s back. “Young Master, your health requires treatment. You cannot keep dragging this on. You fell ill three times on the journey here; if this continues, it will only become more severe.”
Li Qing walked slowly back toward the courtyard. “It’s fine, that’s not important. Make your preparations; we will act on the day of the Emperor’s birthday banquet.”
Back in the courtyard, Ying Er went to the small kitchen to prepare a meal. Li Qing had returned Ban Ting’s deed of servitude yesterday, and the man had already gone home, so Ying Er had to handle all the chores in the courtyard himself.
Li Qing sat in the yard drinking tea, watching Ying Yi fly in carrying a man dressed in black. He asked curiously, “Who is this?”
“Ying Eleven. I knocked him out!”
Li Qing: “…” Feng Yanzhou’s people arrived quickly. As an ordinary person, it was too difficult to avoid the tracking of an emperor. Sigh, he hoped everything would go smoothly from here on.
“What are you doing?”
Ying Yi pulled out a thick hemp rope and tied Ying Eleven up securely, answering, “Tie him up first. We can’t let him interfere with our operations.”
Looking at the wounds on Ying Eleven’s face, Li Qing thought: …You’re all colleagues, you’re being quite ruthless. Could there be a personal grudge?
Poor Ying Eleven was kicked under the bed by Ying Yi, his face covered in dust.
A moment later, Ying Eleven looked helplessly at Ying Er, who was feeding him. “I won’t run. Can’t you move me somewhere else? At least put me in a more spacious place.”
Ying Er casually shoved a steamed bun into his mouth. “I’m not getting involved in your personal love-hate drama.”
Ying Eleven: “…” He felt hopeless. Why did His Majesty send me here? I was beaten up and didn’t even dare to fight back. This is too miserable.
Everyone is struggling to please the Emperor’s beloved; how could His Majesty have the heart to hurt me like this…
Ning Kingdom, Imperial Study.
“Your Majesty, Ying Eleven has gone missing in the Yun Kingdom. Before he vanished, he sent word that three distant relatives have moved into the Yun Kingdom’s Prime Minister’s residence.”
Feng Yanzhou threw his memorial onto the desk and stood up excitedly, unable to suppress his thrill. “Depart! We head to the Yun Kingdom!”
Ying San silently put on the Emperor’s robes and a human-skin mask, sitting on the throne in a daze. Sigh, His Majesty really is… love-brained!
The Yun Kingdom Emperor’s 50th birthday banquet was organized on a grand scale, even including the selection of consorts for the several princes. The palace was bustling everywhere, though the area near the cold palace remained quiet.
Ying Yi carried a corpse, with Ying Er and Ying Eleven following behind. The group cooperated, ready to escape quickly should any situation arise. A moment later, several figures silently infiltrated the Yun Kingdom’s imperial palace.
Li Qing had been forced by the Prime Minister to stay home and was not allowed to take risks. He Yunyun stayed in the small courtyard to keep him company nominally to accompany him, but in reality, to keep watch and prevent him from acting recklessly.
He Yunyun was the orphan of the person He Zhangzhi had loved most. He Zhangzhi had never married, raising her as his own daughter. She was two years older than the original owner, and because two of her previous fiancés had died in succession, she remained unmarried to this day.
She had a good relationship with her cousin, the original owner, and was not influenced by the elders; He Zhangzhi had not kept Li Qing’s intentions secret from her.
The cousins sat in the courtyard admiring the moon, and He Yunyun sighed from time to time. After listening for a long while, Li Qing couldn’t help but ask, “Cousin, what is the matter?”
