Lu Xiaoxiao made a sound of surprise: “It’s a tooth? Is this the gift you wanted to give me?”
“Mm… it’s a tiger fang…” Dantai Jing lowered her eyes shyly.
Lu Xiaoxiao took it and played with it. The ivory-white tooth was small, with smooth lines and a sharp tip, looking like a baby tooth shed by a young tiger. She kept rubbing it and said: “I like it very much. Thank you.”
She tried to sit up to put it on, but a sharp pain in her wound forced her back down.
“May I help you put it on? Should we hang it at the end of your braid? I think weaving it into a hair string would also look quite nice,” Dantai Jing took it and said softly.
Lu Xiaoxiao imagined a tiger fang dangling at the end of her hair, swaying as she walked, and all the little demons immediately kneeling in submission upon seeing her. She decided that was excellent.
Now that the passages to the levels above and below were blocked, the two were effectively trapped inside.
Dantai Jing was unprecedentedly gentle today. Lu Xiaoxiao rested her head on Dantai Jing’s lap while Dantai Jing leaned against the wall.
The pain in her wound kept Lu Xiaoxiao awake, but she didn’t dare to toss and turn on Dantai Jing’s lap for fear of disturbing her rest.
When she opened her eyes, she could see Dantai Jing with her head bowed, sleeping. Her eyelashes were long and thick, her lips moist and glossy. A silver strand of hair hung down naughtily, tickling Lu Xiaoxiao’s face and also stirring her heart.
Staring at her sleeping face for a long time, Lu Xiaoxiao found Dantai Jing even more captivating. I wonder what kind of person such a beautiful person would fall in love with. Lu Xiaoxiao didn’t know, but she suspected no one dared to like Dantai Jing. Just looking at her face made one feel inferior; how could one even dream of possessing her?
Thinking of this, she blushed slightly. She turned over, trying to avoid her sleeping face, but accidentally pulled her wound, making her gasp in pain.
“Hiss!”
Dantai Jing’s voice came down hazily from above: “Why aren’t you resting? Is the pain keeping you awake?” As she spoke, her hand moved to Lu Xiaoxiao’s wound, attempting to use spiritual energy to ease the pain.
“I’m fine. You should rest. Don’t waste your spiritual energy. It won’t heal instantly.” This place was full of dangers, and who knew what might crawl out next. She didn’t want Dantai Jing to waste too much spiritual energy on her.
“This little bit of spiritual energy doesn’t bother me. Is it any better?” Lu Xiaoxiao felt her heart melt from her gentle tone. She shyly nodded and, like an ostrich, hid back in Dantai Jing’s embrace.
Dantai Jing looked at the vermillion coffin in the distance, a flicker of sadness passing through her eyes: “Didn’t Qin Yueshan just say she was looking for the inheritance of the White Tiger, one of the Four Divine Beasts? Since you can’t sleep, why don’t I tell you a story about him?”
As Dantai Jing spoke slowly, a love story between a human and a demon began to unfold.
“Zhuyue was a young girl who lived deep in the Miao village. Her clan was responsible for guarding the punished descendant of the Four Divine Beasts—Bai Wu—for generations.”
“According to ancient texts, Bai Wu was once a supreme overlord a thousand years ago. Due to a conflict with a human powerhouse, he lost control and destroyed ten cities, causing widespread death and devastation. The Celestial Emperor was furious and dispatched celestial soldiers to capture him. They inflicted severe punishment and imprisoned him in a secret realm deep within the Miao village, guarded by Zhuyue’s clan for generations to prevent him from harming the world again.”
“However, Bai Wu was not an easy beast to tame. During the long years of his confinement, he constantly sought opportunities to escape. What’s more terrifying is that over the years, the divine nature in Bai Wu’s bloodline had become increasingly thin, replaced by power and form no different from the demon race. In some ways, he was even more powerful and dangerous than the Grand Demons.”
“One day, Zhuyue encountered a young man in white clothes while collecting herbs in the Lang’er Mountain forest. The young man was seriously injured and on the verge of death. Zhuyue was kind-hearted and naturally couldn’t leave him to die. She struggled to drag the young man back home.”
Lu Xiaoxiao guessed: “That young man wouldn’t happen to be Bai Wu escaping, would he?”
Dantai Jing rubbed her head: “You guessed correctly.”
“The people of the Miao village have been exclusive since ancient times, never allowing outsiders inside. So, Zhuyue never told anyone that she had taken in a young man. Since Zhuyue’s mother died early and she lived alone on the edge of the village, the young man’s presence in the Miao village remained hidden.”
“The people of the Miao village were skilled in medicine, and Zhuyue was gifted in this area. In just a few days, she actually managed to save Bai Wu. Until one day, Zhuyue returned from collecting herbs and was wiping the young man’s body. He suddenly grabbed both her hands, looking at her vigilantly…”
Lu Xiaoxiao added: “I bet Zhuyue and Bai Wu got together later. But one was from the family of the guardian, and the other was the guarded. I assume this love story didn’t end well.”
Dantai Jing paused: “Yes… perhaps Zhuyue’s kindness touched Bai Wu, gradually causing him to put aside his beastly side. Just like that, the two fell in love. Because of Bai Wu’s identity, he couldn’t show himself to others, so they didn’t have a wedding. They worked from sunrise to sunset. Zhuyue collected herbs during the day, and Bai Wu sorted and ground the medicinal materials at night. Their life was quite pleasant and harmonious.”
“Until Zhuyue realized with a start that she was pregnant. Her abdomen grew larger day by day, and earthly matters are ultimately hard to conceal. No matter how careful she was, the vigilant Clan Elder eventually discovered it.”
“The Elder detained her and harshly interrogated her about the father of the child in her belly. However, Zhuyue was extremely stubborn, willing to sacrifice her life rather than utter a single word. Just as the Elder was full of doubts, thinking Zhuyue had secretly associated with an outsider, and ordered her execution, Bai Wu stepped forward.”
“But he failed to rescue her, and the Elder tried to trap him with the Demon Locking Formation. Bai Wu had been imprisoned for a thousand long years and was already filled with resentment toward the people of the Miao village. Now, seeing that the Miao people intended to harm his wife and unborn child, his deep-seated anger and his suppressed demon power were reignited.”
Lu Xiaoxiao felt a little sad listening to the story. At most, this was just free love, so why did they have to kill them? She couldn’t help but say: “Perhaps if the two had run away earlier and left the Miao village, none of this would have happened.”
Dantai Jing said softly: “There is never an ‘if’… Finally, in his rage, Bai Wu lost his mind. He killed the Clan Elder of the Miao village, intending to take Zhuyue and leave. But the Miao people refused to let them go and tried to use their most vicious Love Gu on the couple.”
“What happened then? Was Zhuyue injured? Did she know the young man was Bai Wu?”
“Later, Bai Wu turned ferocious and killed everyone in the village. Zhuyue was not harmed and successfully gave birth to a daughter. Before she was caught by the Clan Elder, she didn’t know that Bai Wu was the White Tiger imprisoned in the forbidden area of the Miao village.”
“Poor Zhuyue…”
Dantai Jing didn’t continue but asked: “Although the people of the village wanted to kill Bai Wu, Zhuyue was raised by the village people since childhood, having lost her parents. If you were Zhuyue, what would you do?”
Lu Xiaoxiao sighed: “Zhuyue’s original intention was to save him, but a series of linked events followed. If it were me, I wouldn’t know what to do either. I would probably be too ashamed to face the deceased villagers and unable to continue being with Bai Wu.”
“Zhuyue thought the same way, only she was more… After giving birth to the child, she inflicted the most incurable Love Gu on Bai Wu, and then quietly left him with the child.”
“What happens when someone is afflicted by the Love Gu?”
“The person afflicted by the Love Gu will fall in love with the person who cast the Gu, submit to them, and suffer an attack once a month. Each time, the Love Gu will gnaw at Bai Wu’s heart, causing him unbearable pain. The pain only subsides when he sees the person he loves.”
Lu Xiaoxiao sighed: “Even after leaving, she made Bai Wu feel the torment of deeply loving her… This truly is the cruelest punishment for Bai Wu… Bai Wu couldn’t cure the Gu and must have died quickly. What happened to Zhuyue and her child later?”
A layer of gloom covered Dantai Jing’s eyes: “She died of melancholy.”
Bai Wu was a demon, and Zhuyue was a master of Gu. And Dantai Jing was a half-demon who also knew how to use Gu. If Lu Xiaoxiao’s guess was correct, Zhuyue’s full name was Dantai Zhuyue, and Dantai Jing was her and Bai Wu’s child.
Lu Xiaoxiao suddenly recalled Dantai Jing’s story in the Demon Locking Tower about how she was hungry and poorly clothed in the human world, begging during the day and sleeping in a Mountain God Temple at night. It seemed not all of it was fabricated.
She sat up and put her arms around Dantai Jing: “In this world, there will always be times when things don’t go as planned. Although the ending for Zhuyue, Bai Wu, and the Miao villagers wasn’t perfect, the love they shared was real. The Miao villagers died unjustly, but Zhuyue ultimately avenged them.”
“All the grievances of this life may be the result of causes sown in a previous life. With this life’s karma concluded, the Miao villagers will never have to bitterly guard the village for a thousand years again, and Zhuyue and Bai Wu will certainly be able to forget their past lives and have a better future.”
Dantai Jing asked with red-rimmed eyes: “Really?”
Lu Xiaoxiao hugged her tighter: “Really. Cause in a past life, result in this life. Maybe the Miao villagers killed Bai Wu’s family and ancestors eighteen generations ago. And perhaps Zhuyue and Bai Wu were immortals sent down to earth to undergo a tribulation of love. After this life ends, they will return to the Immortal Ranks and never have to experience the seven emotions and six desires or the suffering of the human world again.”
“And what about their daughter?” Dantai Jing leaned against her, asking in a low, husky voice.
Lu Xiaoxiao’s heart tightened, then she replied with mock seriousness: “That little girl will definitely be able to break through the Great Vehicle stage, become the most powerful half-demon in the world—slaying gods and stopping Buddhas—and she will also have a very, very loving and powerful Dao Companion. If that little girl likes children, she will have a happy family with many descendants. If she doesn’t, she will be barren, and won’t have to suffer the hardship of raising children in the second half of her life, living happily until she ascends to the Immortal Ranks!”
Dantai Jing chuckled: “You really talk nonsense. Do you think reaching the Immortal Ranks is that easy?”
“I calculated with my fingers that this little girl is destined for greatness when she grows up. Maybe she’s already close to the Great Vehicle stage right now.”
Dantai Jing scolded teasingly: “When did you learn to tell fortunes?” The two of them were practically sleeping in the same bed. She often saw her draw talismans, but she had never seen her learn fortune-telling.
“Heavenly secrets must not be revealed…”
