Chapter 5: Is This Really Him Thinking Too Much?
Fang Jiahe only ate a little at dinner before making an excuse to head upstairs.
Lying on his bed, Fang Jiahe picked up the photo frame on his nightstand. Inside was a photo of their family of three. At that time, Fang Jiahe was only about eight years old, and both of his parents in the photo were still very young.
In the picture, his mother was smiling as she leaned over to support his shoulders; she looked extremely happy.
Fang Jiahe stroked his mother’s face in the photo. Perhaps she never knew that her husband didn’t love her, so at least until the day she died, she felt she was very happy.
As he lay there, Fang Jiahe unknowingly fell asleep. When he woke up, he found it was only a little past ten. Not wanting to stay at home, he gave Qi Nanxun a call.
“Hello?”
Qi Nanxun answered before long, his voice carrying a hint of hoarseness from having just woken up.
Fang Jiahe smiled: “Are you sleeping too?”
Qi Nanxun: “Yeah, had nothing to do so I drifted off.”
Fang Jiahe: “Want to go out for a late-night snack? I didn’t eat much for dinner.”
Qi Nanxun: “Alright, wait for me at home. I’ll wash my face and then come pick you up.”
Hanging up the phone, Fang Jiahe got up to wash in the bathroom, then changed his clothes and prepared to head out.
However, as he walked out of his room, he bumped right into Ye Nian’an.
Ye Nian’an had also just finished a shower and was about to head downstairs to pour a glass of water; she froze for a moment when she saw Fang Jiahe.
Fang Jiahe acted as if he hadn’t seen her and walked straight past her.
Ye Nian’an lowered her head as well. After all, Fang Jiahe’s dislike for her and her mother was very obvious, so she wouldn’t make a fool of herself by trying to strike up a conversation with him.
When Fang Jiahe came out, Qi Nanxun’s car was already waiting outside his house.
After he got in the car, Qi Nanxun looked at his expression: “It seems the interaction wasn’t very pleasant.”
Fang Jiahe: “I didn’t really interact with them much; I’m just in a bad mood myself.”
Qi Nanxun asked while starting the car: “What’s wrong?”
Fang Jiahe: “Did you know that woman has a daughter the same age as us? Now her daughter’s room is right next to mine. To be honest, I feel really uncomfortable about it.”
Qi Nanxun: “Because your father can even accept this woman’s daughter, right?”
Fang Jiahe: “Yes. Since my dad agreed to let that woman bring her daughter to live with us, and didn’t even have the daughter stay in a guest room downstairs but put her upstairs instead—doesn’t that show my dad has accepted someone else’s daughter along with her?”
“He might even spend money to raise her. Just thinking about it makes me feel ridiculous.”
Qi Nanxun: “Maybe your stepmother requested it.”
Fang Jiahe smiled with a hint of irony: “Is this what it means to love someone—to be able to tolerate everything?”
Qi Nanxun shook his head: “I don’t know. We can’t understand what they’re thinking.”
Fang Jiahe: “Do you know what that woman’s daughter is named?”
Qi Nanxun: “What’s her name?”
Fang Jiahe: “Ye Nian’an. You know my dad’s name has the character ‘An’ in it, right? Nian’an—that name is truly interesting.”
However, after Fang Jiahe finished speaking, there was a long silence from Qi Nanxun. He turned his head to look at Qi Nanxun and found that Qi Nanxun’s expression was a bit strange, as if he were lost in thought.
Fang Jiahe said in confusion: “Nanxun?”
Only then did Qi Nanxun snap back to reality: “Huh? Oh, now that you mention it, that name does seem to have quite a deep meaning.”
Fang Jiahe felt Qi Nanxun’s reaction was a bit odd. He frowned slightly and said, “What was with you just now? You suddenly spaced out.”
Qi Nanxun smiled and replied, “It’s nothing, it’s just that the name reminded me of a high school classmate. But her surname wasn’t Ye, so it shouldn’t be the same person.”
What kind of high school classmate could make Qi Nanxun daze out just by hearing a name?
Fang Jiahe felt a bit uncomfortable in his heart: “What’s the deal with this high school classmate? You seem to care about it quite a bit.”
Qi Nanxun laughed: “Jealous?”
Fang Jiahe didn’t say anything.
Qi Nanxun reached out and ruffled his hair: “Don’t think too much, dummy.”
Was he really thinking too much?
Just what exactly had happened between Qi Nanxun and that high school classmate named Nian’an?
