Pretty Wife Insists I Live Off Her - Chapter 64
Chapter 64: Forever Together, Pinky Promise.
“Is this song ‘First Love’?” Yue Lei’s lips curved into a slight smile as she came out of the restroom and heard the music.
She was a rough-around-the-edges person, and her taste in music was always crude.
When proposing to her wife in the previous life, she had thoroughly researched and finally chose this song, which, though carrying a faint melancholy, was filled with passionate emotion. Since the proposal succeeded, the song had risen to the top of her favorite playlist.
Yue Lei hummed the tune as she walked toward the terrace booth. The closer she got, the more she felt something was off. The source of the singing seemed to be coming from inside the booth…
“Xiao Xue doesn’t even remember what day it is. Maybe she just happened to see this restaurant can play requested songs. She does seem to like romantic things…”
There was another possibility, but the hope was too faint. Yue Lei didn’t dare think it. She was afraid that dwelling on it would build up expectation, and the feeling of disappointment was hard to bear.
Muttering to herself, Yue Lei opened the door.
A huge shower of red rose petals burst toward her. The air was filled with fragrance, and the petals scattered and danced in the breeze, a magnificent sight.
Yue Lei looked up in surprise; the petals had been contained in a basket that tipped over as she opened the door, spilling them all out.
Astonished by the flutter in her heart, Yue Lei glanced at the band playing in the corner and, blushing, asked Mo Yingxue: “What is all this?”
“Yue Lei…” Mo Yingxue took her hand, gazed into her eyes, and then slowly dropped to one knee. She pulled out a ring box, on top of which lay a diamond ring the size of a pigeon’s egg.
At this scene, all the suppressed emotions turned into excitement and joy.
Yue Lei’s heart hammered so loudly she felt she could hear it. Her mind was a mess; she had not expected this at all. This was more than she had wanted or hoped for.
Yue Lei’s voice trembled with disbelief: “Xiao Xue, are you… are you proposing to me? You haven’t graduated yet, isn’t it too early? Although you’ll be my wife sooner or later, you’re still a student…”
“Who says university students can’t get married? I’m over twenty years old, too.” Mo Yingxue smiled and chided her, carefully taking the diamond ring out of the box to continue the procedure.
Her dark eyes gazed at Yue Lei, as if trying to suck her whole person in: “Yue Lei, will you marry me?”
Hearing those words from Mo Yingxue felt like a dream. Yue Lei never thought this day would come; she always assumed she would be the one to do the proposing.
But now that it was actually happening, she was so happy she almost passed out!
Yue Lei immediately said, “Yes, of course, I will. Whether it’s the last life, this life, or the next life, you are my wife!”
“Then stop spacing out. Give me your hand…” Mo Yingxue knew the answer would be yes, but she was still very nervous.
Yue Lei didn’t dare let her wife kneel alone, so she immediately knelt down too.
They were both kneeling, and after several attempts, they managed to put the ring on Yue Lei’s finger, red-faced and laughing.
The surrounding waiters, seeing the successful proposal, immediately came in, scattering petals and offering congratulations, while the band played songs one after another.
Yue Lei stood up, feeling her legs were numb, and then went to help her wife up. She pulled Mo Yingxue into her arms and closed her eyes, kissing her.
Once the staff left the terrace, Yue Lei whined and burrowed into her wife’s embrace.
She rubbed against her, stealing kisses on Mo Yingxue’s neck, her voice sticky and sweet: “Wife, can I call you Wife now? Wife, Wife, my good Wife.”
Mo Yingxue knew she was getting revenge for the earlier slight and gently stroked her hair.
Yue Lei happily took many photos and videos of the glittering ring on her hand. She didn’t know how Mo Yingxue had chosen it, but the ring looked about eighty percent similar to the one she had given Mo Yingxue in the previous life, only swapping the white diamond for a rarer, more expensive pink diamond.
Mo Yingxue’s fingers were slender and fair, making the white diamond look beautiful, like a jointed doll.
In the previous life, Yue Lei had subtly asked her roommate and learned that most of Mo Yingxue’s jewelry was silver, as she disliked gold and colorful gems, so she chose the most classic color.
However, Yue Lei clearly preferred this pink diamond. In her eyes, expensive was good, and she greedily wanted the most expensive, regardless of whether it matched.
Yue Lei chuckled, spinning the ring on her finger: “I thought you forgot what day it was. I thought I was the only one who cared about these things again.”
“No, I wouldn’t,” Mo Yingxue pulled her hand over, holding it tight, stopping her from fiddling with the ring. Her voice was gentle: “Think about it. Which anniversary did I not come back to be with you?”
Yue Lei thought back to the previous life. It was true. In their seven years of marriage, they had spent every anniversary together. But life is full of unknowns, and they weren’t always free to be together.
For example, on their second anniversary, Yue Lei was almost stranded out of town due to a business trip and bad weather preventing the plane from taking off.
At the time, she was prepared to take a slow train just to rush home to be with her wife. Thankfully, the rain eased, and the brave pilot took off amidst the occasional flashes of thunder and lightning. That was the first time Yue Lei had seen lightning crackle in the clouds not far from the plane.
She felt thrilled and terrified, even secretly recording a final message on her phone. Yue Lei sent the video to her private account, ready to forward it to her wife if the plane crashed. She planned to tell her not to wait, to remarry if she wanted, but also not to forget her, or she would haunt her as a ghost.
After that, Yue Lei would quietly adjust her schedule around that date, trying to stay close to Fencheng, or rather, close to her wife.
Then, on their third anniversary, Yue Lei spent the day in the hospital due to appendicitis. Mo Yingxue brought flowers and takeout from Yue Lei’s favorite restaurant, spending the day with her in the hospital room. During her hospitalization, even though she had hired a caretaker, Mo Yingxue never left her side. They just talked about trivial things, but Yue Lei felt incredibly warm and happy.
Thinking carefully, all the unexpected emergencies had always come from her side. Mo Yingxue, without needing a reminder, would stay home, dressed like a proud, beautiful Persian cat, waiting for her to come home. Although Mo Yingxue didn’t have a traditional job, running her gallery and exhibition space after graduation was demanding, requiring constant communication. She wasn’t idle but was very willing to share her time with Yue Lei.
The more Yue Lei thought about it, all her past jealousy and her fears about her wife divorcing her seemed like a dream. After waking up, she realized how incredibly happy she had been.
She leaned on Mo Yingxue’s shoulder and murmured: “I was such an idiot. How could I have thought in the last life that you didn’t love me or care about me…”
“Maybe because I don’t talk about it or express it much,” Mo Yingxue smiled, openly turning the page. She huffed and bared her teeth at Yue Lei: “Actually, I was quite scared of you in the last life. You had too much energy. Give you an inch, and you’d try to drag me into bed.”
This rendered Yue Lei speechless, and she could only rub her nose. In the previous life, although their hearts hadn’t fully connected, their bodies were incredibly compatible. So, to get closer and closer to Mo Yingxue, she would use opportunistic methods to tempt her into sex, and then use the aftercare time to talk about tender topics. However, once they had both calmed down, the distance between their two hearts seemed to grow wide again.
Just then, a waiter came in and whispered something to Mo Yingxue. Yue Lei was curious what they were saying and why it couldn’t be said in front of her. Mo Yingxue looked strangely at Yue Lei, looking a little embarrassed.
She raised her hand and pointed to the distant sky, sounding nervous: “The waiter said that since it’s completely dark, they can start the fireworks. I don’t know if you’ll like this. But I remember you took a lot of photos of the fireworks show when we went to the amusement park.”
Whether Yue Lei liked it or not, the grand fireworks display Mo Yingxue had prepared was definitely going to cause a sensation in Fencheng and be the talk of the town.
If Yue Lei loved it, Mo Yingxue could easily brush off any gossip. But if she didn’t like it, Mo Yingxue would look a little foolish and embarrassed, and she didn’t want to think about what the people in the know would say about her.
“Of course, I like it! Do you know why the Spring Festival is my favorite holiday? Because everyone sets off fireworks and firecrackers during the Spring Festival!” Yue Lei hadn’t expected a show after the proposal, and her voice lifted several octaves with excitement.
She laughed happily, adding: “I have three reasons why I love the Spring Festival. The second reason is also related to fireworks: the government forbids them, but people still set them off. It represents the rebellion of us common folk.”
Mo Yingxue waited for a long time but didn’t hear her continue with the third reason. She tugged on Yue Lei’s sleeve, about to ask.
Suddenly, a flash of fire lit up the sky, and with a whoosh, the fireworks show began. Bright fireworks in various patterns and shapes bloomed across the dark blue canvas of the sky.
When Mo Yingxue customized the fireworks, the pyrotechnicians had offered to write a confession in the sky, but the thought alone made her scalp tingle, so she opted for just the beautiful patterns.
The reflection of the fireworks illuminated Yue Lei’s eyes, and her heart felt warm, as if someone had specifically lit up lights just for her.
She had given her phone to the waiter beforehand to record the moment, so now she could fully appreciate the spectacle.
Yue Lei hugged her wife, feeling her mood slowly stabilize. All the confusion and disorientation of being reborn had become the past. Now, all she felt was the happiness of having a second chance with her wife, their hearts finally connected.
Yue Lei kissed her: “Wife, thank you. I love this so much, so much!”
“Today really is a wonderful day,” Mo Yingxue smiled, gently brushing Yue Lei’s hair back. “When I told you not to call me ‘Wife’ at dinner, you looked like a puppy whose light suddenly went out. So I did make you sad in one place today. I’m sorry.”
Yue Lei nodded, agreeing wholeheartedly: “One person planning an anniversary is never enough. I learned that lesson in the last life. I’d spend ages consulting with Lin Zhixi, and in the end, I was always afraid you wouldn’t be satisfied.”
Then she looked up at Mo Yingxue, her eyes slightly wet: “This time, I feel like this is the best anniversary I’ve ever had, especially since my wife prepared it for me. But I’m greedy. I want this day to be something we plan and prepare together from now on. Can we do that, Wife? Will you find me annoying?”
“How could I?” Mo Yingxue kissed her tenderly again. “Not just the anniversary, but every day we have together from now on, we will plan and prepare together, and live a life full of happiness and contentment. Sometimes I feel like love is a marvelous thing. It has no physical form, yet it can make a person’s entire confidence and pride crumble. Except for when you’re with me, I’ve never seen you look like this.”
“It’s a little different, too,” Yue Lei thought for a moment and smiled awkwardly: “In the last life, I managed so many people, so I had to put on a bit of an act outside. But I also put on an act at home. Do you remember how I often pretended not to notice you, only acting like I just saw you when your footsteps got close?”
But she was like a human wife-radar. The moment she heard Mo Yingxue’s voice, her entire attention would be stolen by her, making her unable to focus on anything else, only wanting to see what her wife was doing.
Surprisingly, Mo Yingxue looked at her and replied: “I know.” Seeing Yue Lei’s expression of disbelief, she shrugged slightly: “You can’t blame me. Your emotions are too easy to read. Every time I entered the room, you would suddenly look very busy. Either you were tidying up or stealing glances at me from the corner of your eye. I noticed all of it.”
Despite having her careful secret revealed, Yue Lei wasn’t sad at all: “Wife, does that mean you were watching me too? You were just as concerned about what I was doing as I was?”
“Something like that.” Even such a low-key confirmation made Yue Lei’s non-existent tail wag furiously. The thought delighted Mo Yingxue, and she cleared her throat: “After all, we were married. Not only must we fulfill our wifely duties regularly, but we must also care for and love each other. That was just my way of doing it.”
“Wife.” Unconsciously, Yue Lei hooked her pinky finger around Mo Yingxue’s. “Last life, this life, and the next life, we’re going to be together, okay? Pinky promise.”
Despite the experience of being reborn, Mo Yingxue was still skeptical of reincarnation and the supernatural. But faced with Yue Lei’s innocence and expectation, she just smiled, gently tightened her grip, and rocked Yue Lei’s hand: “Okay. We’ll be together forever. Pinky promise.”
