Pretty Wife Insists I Live Off Her - Chapter 46
Chapter 46: Why Do You Always Avoid Me?
Yue Lei was extremely reluctant to leave the kittens as they were about to go on a trip. These little things had grown up too fast. When she first found them, they were weak and pitiful, seeming unlikely to survive. But now, they could crunch through hard kibble and get their faces covered in wet food. They climbed, darted around, and were mischievous enough to scratch white marks onto the wooden door!
Moreover, the kittens would be two months old during their trip. The future owners, who had reserved the kittens in advance, were already impatient. They were constantly chasing her in the adoption group for photos and videos and asking when they could pick up their cats.
The current plan was to give the two ginger cats, Zhong Yu (Moderate Rain) and Da Yu (Heavy Rain), to Wu Jiajia, and the calico cat, Xiao Yu (Light Rain), the one that looked most like the mother cat, to Zhu Yi. Thinking about this, Yue Lei secretly grumbled about Wu Jiajia in her heart. That girl was too greedy to take both ginger boys at once! Is her cat food container big enough?!
However, she had promised her wife that they would only keep the mother cat and the three kittens Bao Yu (Storm), Mao Mao Yu (Drizzle), and Zhong Yu (Yue Lei changed her mind on the spot and decided to keep one ginger cat), so the remaining few had to be rehomed.
With the melancholy of separation, Yue Lei lay on the carpet, dangling a feather wand half-heartedly. One moment she’d grab a lucky kitten to bury her face in and sniff its belly, the next she’d hug one and play with its paws. The kittens, who had grown up being handled by her, were very used to this human touch. Every single one of them was an affectionate little darling!
Mo Yingxue went to Yue Lei’s room first, didn’t find her there, and then turned into this room. Pushing the door open and seeing Yue Lei absorbed in sniffing a cat, the smile on her face froze for a second. Then she chuckled helplessly: “Sister, I’m going out today. You should start packing your luggage. Bring everything you need. We’re leaving for Fencheng tomorrow.”
Caught in an undignified moment by her wife again, Yue Lei blushed. “Shoo, shoo! Get off, no climbing me like a mountain!” she feigned annoyance, hugging the kittens off her face and sitting up straight, pretending the innocent little cats were the instigators.
After maintaining her minimal dignity, Yue Lei looked at Mo Yingxue, her eyes full of expectation: “When will you be back?”
Mo Yingxue’s expression was calm: “I don’t know.”
Yue Lei frowned: “What are you going to do?”
Seeing that she couldn’t hide it, Mo Yingxue sighed softly: “Duan Xiyu invited me to sing karaoke. Since we last met, she’s been inviting me out every now and then. I kept refusing, and she asked if I had a problem with her. This time, she said there would be other kindergarten classmates, so I accepted.”
“Duan Xiyu?” Yue Lei’s internal alarm went off. “The Abs Sister?”
Mo Yingxue’s eyes darkened slightly, and she clasped her hands, her tone sarcastic: “What? Are you craving her abs too?”
“No, no.” Yue Lei quickly waved her hands. She adopted a serious posture: “It’s mainly because I don’t have any other impression of her. It’s just abs. I have those too, they’re just not that obvious because the food has been too good lately.”
Mo Yingxue looked at Yue Lei lifting her shirt and forcefully flexing her abdomen, trying to create definition, and burst into laughter. She turned around, laughing as she waved her hand: “I’m leaving now. I heard two people also attend the Southwestern Art Institute. I’m going to ask them what their majors are.”
What was she laughing at? Yue Lei sat there blankly, touching her unified, non-defined abdominal area, sinking into contemplation.
The private luxury room was illuminated by flashing neon lights, with seven or eight people sparsely seated inside. Mo Yingxue didn’t like this noisy environment, and everyone present was someone she hadn’t seen in twenty years. So, after confirming she was in the right place, she sat in a corner. When someone sang, she listened attentively; when others clapped, she clapped along. Her main role was to be part of the ambiance; asking her to sing or select a song was impossible.
“Sorry, I’m late! I should drink three penalty shots! But I drove today, so I’ll chew on a lemon instead!”
A cheerful female voice accompanied the opening door. Mo Yingxue looked over. It was Duan Xiyu. Today, she wore a sleek black jumpsuit that made her look long and lean, with a beautifully defined waistline. Some people are natural focal points. The music paused, and everyone gathered around to greet her.
Mo Yingxue noticed people pinching her arm: “Xiyu! Long time no see, you look even cooler!”
Someone was patting her waist: “Why are you covered up so much today? Let’s see those abs!” Another person was hanging casually on her: “Tsk, you’re the one who organized the get-together, but you took forever to show up. You made us sing awkwardly. Seriously.”
She felt like Duan Xiyu was the Buddhist monk Tang Sanzang, surrounded by spider-demons! Their eyes met, and Mo Yingxue nodded faintly.
Duan Xiyu was clearly familiar with everyone there. After greeting them and sitting down, she immediately scanned the code to continue the music. Like a social butterfly, she chatted with one girl and toasted with another.
Mo Yingxue didn’t pay much attention to her, enjoying the singing of others. That is, until Duan Xiyu glanced at the coffee table, ordered a few new fruit platters, and brought one over to her. The woman’s face was alight with vibrant smiles, and her wheat-colored skin seemed to be coated in honey under the dim light: “Are you having fun? You haven’t ordered a single song at KTV, have you?”
Mo Yingxue took the fork she offered and speared a piece of cantaloupe. Her eyes fell on the girl dancing to the loud music up front: “I’m not much of a singer. I’m happy just watching them.”
Duan Xiyu smiled, not pushing her to sing: “Alright, I won’t pressure you. After all, you’re so hard to get out of the house. What if I push too hard and scare you away?”
Smiling vaguely, Mo Yingxue turned and asked her: “You said some classmates go to the same university as me. What are their majors?”
Duan Xiyu thought she wanted to talk to her, and the light in her eyes dimmed again. She smiled playfully and called out: “Xiao Zhao, Hamster, come over here.”
Xiao Zhao was a pale, artistic girl, wearing a light jacket even in the middle of summer, looking quite sensitive to the cold. Hamster was dressed in a sweet, strawberry-themed Lolita dress, with no less than twenty bows of varying sizes on her.
Mo Yingxue asked again.
Xiao Zhao answered first: “I study bel canto singing.”
Hamster followed: “I study screenwriting.”
Mo Yingxue’s eyes lit up. She shook hands with both of them: “Wonderful! I’m in the Fine Arts department. We’re close; we should get together more often.”
After adding each other as friends, she secretly sat down next to Hamster: “Xiao Shu, my friend wants to audit Directing classes next year. Do you know anyone who can help?”
“For the Directing department, two of my roommates are in it.” Hamster looked at her with bright eyes, her curled eyelashes fluttering like butterflies: “Is your friend an Art student? Will she be able to keep up if she audits a few classes?”
“No, she’s not a student at our university.” Mo Yingxue told her all about Yue Lei’s situation, and promised to give them some financial compensation if they helped Yue Lei attend the classes.
This was the whole point of her coming to karaoke today. She and Yue Lei originally thought they just needed the course schedule and could show up to class.
But their experience during last semester’s final exams taught them that simply knowing the schedule wasn’t enough.
Official classes often involved room changes or teacher schedule adjustments, and Yue Lei’s information was always delayed, causing her to miss classes several times. To truly learn something, she had to integrate herself with the students from the start.
Mo Yingxue’s plan was for Yue Lei to impersonate a directing student’s secondary account and sneak into the class chat group to be a silent ghost. However, she still needed to talk to those two students first.
Hamster didn’t know her full plan and smiled, nodding: “Sure, I’ll ask my roommates when I get back. If they agree, we can bring her to class next semester.”
Mo Yingxue had accomplished the major thing on her mind and wanted to slip away after adding the friends.
Unexpectedly, just as she picked up her bag and reached the door, Duan Xiyu pulled her back. Her reason was self-righteous: “I’ve never heard of anyone running away halfway through a class reunion. If you didn’t want to hang out with us, you shouldn’t have agreed in the first place. Since you’re finally here, you’re staying until the end.”
Being watched by so many eyes, leaving now would indeed make it seem like she came with an agenda. Mo Yingxue had no choice but to return to her seat and continue being a clapping and cheering robot.
Fortunately, after meeting Xiao Zhao and Hamster, they seemed to have naturally categorized her as one of their own. Afterward, they stayed by her side throughout the singing and eating, not leaving her alone and not giving Duan Xiyu a chance to chat with her about trivial matters.
Physically and mentally exhausted from the socializing, Mo Yingxue checked the time. It was past eleven o’clock. An hour ago, Yue Lei had messaged that she was home alone, had finished dinner, and started a movie. She probably hadn’t finished yet. Not wanting to interrupt her fun, Mo Yingxue walked toward the street, planning to hail a taxi home.
However, this area was the most bustling part of Southwest City, with KTVs and nightclubs everywhere.
Taxis were particularly hard to come by, with an estimated wait of over twenty minutes. Just as she felt helpless, an SUV pulled up in front of her. The car window slowly slid down, revealing Duan Xiyu’s capable and beautiful face. She raised her chin toward Mo Yingxue: “Can’t get a ride? I can give you a lift, perfect timing.”
When facing her, Mo Yingxue naturally put up an extra layer of defense: “No need, my house is quite far.”
Duan Xiyu rolled down the rear window, revealing three girls squeezed in the back, smiling and waving at her. Hamster was among them. “I’m doing a good deed and taking everyone home. I can give you a ride along the way.”
Since she put it that way, refusing seemed a bit strange. Mo Yingxue opened the door and sat in the passenger seat, nodding politely to Duan Xiyu: “Thank you.”
The five girls chatted on and off during the ride, and the atmosphere was very harmonious.
Hamster was very interested in Mo Yingxue being a painter and kept showing her those absolute color perception tests. She watched in amazement as Mo Yingxue found the target color among a hundred shades of lipstick marks in just a few seconds.
She thumped her thigh, looking exasperated: “I give up trying to compete with you talented people! Xiao Zhao has perfect pitch, and you have absolute color perception. Why can’t Heaven give me absolute inspiration! I want my creativity to flow like a fountain, so I can write brilliant and exciting scripts!”
Mo Yingxue smiled: “Then I wish you success.”
“You’ll definitely succeed! Go, Hamster!” Duan Xiyu said this without looking at Hamster, instead glancing at Mo Yingxue.
Happy times are always short. Hamster and her friends lived close by, and soon the three girls in the back got out of the car. Only Duan Xiyu and Mo Yingxue remained. Mo Yingxue felt a rare surge of nervousness, tightly gripping her bag strap and regretting getting into the car.
Just as they were nearing the house, Duan Xiyu suddenly pulled over to the side of the road. She looked up at Mo Yingxue, her tone plaintive: “Xiao Xue, why do you always avoid me?”
