Pretty Wife Insists I Live Off Her - Chapter 44
Chapter 44: I Feel Like You’re Going to Eat Me.
Mo Yingxue had discussed the issue of Yue Lei with her mother in the previous life. Her stance then was exactly the same as it was now. However, knowing she would succeed, she felt less apprehension and more composure this time.
Mo Yingxue picked at her hands, pretending to be very nervous as she sat in front of Mo Shu. She started with: “Mom, I like Yue Lei, and I’m pursuing her, but she keeps refusing. Can you give me some advice?”
“What?” Mo Shu’s face was filled with a familiar surprise. She took several sips of tea before her feelings calmed down. She said earnestly: “Xiao Xue, Mom is very pleased that you’ve grown up and found someone you like. Xiao Lei seems like a good person, but she doesn’t even have a place to live. What kind of good life can you have with her?”
Mo Yingxue didn’t follow her lead. She looked up and asked, just as she had before: “Then, first tell me who my other half-physiological donor is. Everyone else has parents or two mothers. Why have I only had one mom my whole life?”
Mo Shu’s face flushed crimson then pale. This topic was forbidden between the mother and daughter. For the first twenty years, Xiao Xue had been very sensible and never asked. She clenched her fists, suppressing her anger, her thumb knuckles cracking: “You… what do you mean by that?”
As if determined to argue with her mother, Mo Yingxue smiled faintly: “Since you don’t want to tell me, then don’t interfere with my love life. You’re not skilled at choosing a partner, Mom, so I don’t need to listen to you.”
Fortunately, Mo Shu wasn’t very interested in finding a partner herself. Hearing her daughter’s jab felt like a low blow, but she wasn’t too upset. After thinking for a moment, Mo Shu changed the subject and countered: “But since she won’t agree to be with you, why bother?”
“She likes me very much, she’s just afraid to pursue it,” Mo Yingxue smiled cunningly. “I don’t want to progress too fast, either. I’m very satisfied with the current situation, as long as you, my Mother, don’t interfere.”
Mo Shu felt a complex swirl of emotions from her daughter’s attack. She thought for a moment before continuing to ask: “Then why didn’t you tell me beforehand? You made me think she was a bad person.”
Mo Yingxue looked down, slightly shy: “When you came back, she was definitely listening behind the door, and I didn’t want her to feel too smug. And we haven’t really spent time together since…”
“My fault, my fault.” Mo Shu poured herself another cup of tea. “Well, why don’t we seize the day? How about you call Yue Lei, and the three of us have dinner tonight?”
“No.” Mo Yingxue shook her head vigorously, declining her mother’s suggestion: “I want to keep things the way they are. You also don’t need to be too enthusiastic towards her or anything just because I like her. It’s not set in stone that we’ll become a couple; maybe I won’t be so infatuated in a little while.”
Hearing this, Mo Shu also breathed a sigh of relief. She was afraid her daughter would lose her head like she did, insisting on being with Yue Lei or having a child.
“Alright, then I won’t interfere with your love life. But I’m here, and if you get hurt, I absolutely won’t forgive her,” Mo Shu returned to her usual comfortable, carefree state, no longer worrying about her daughter. She lifted her hand to look at her exquisite manicure: “Oh, and the dinner with the Duan family is the day after tomorrow. Remember to go with me.”
Since her relationship with Yue Lei was finally out in the open with her mother this life, Mo Yingxue was no longer afraid of anything. She readily agreed: “Okay.”
Yue Lei didn’t know what Mo Yingxue had told her mother. In any case, when they met again, Ms. Mo Shu’s attitude was neither intimate nor exclusionary, and she spoke in a normal tone. There was no subtle malice or deliberate coldness. It was similar to their usual interactions in the previous life, which was Yue Lei’s comfort zone with Mo Shu.
She sighed in relief, and the shadow of not being acknowledged by Mo Yingxue vanished. Her wife was willing to talk to her mother for her sake, for thirty-four minutes! What more could she be dissatisfied with?
Today, Mo Shu left early. Yue Lei and Mo Yingxue were glued together, sharing a single luxurious banana split sundae. The two originally had their own spoons, digging and eating. Mo Yingxue glanced at Yue Lei and had an idea.
She fed Yue Lei a huge spoonful, stuffing her mouth full. Yue Lei only wanted to eat half, but Mo Yingxue wouldn’t allow it, keeping the spoon at her mouth.
While feeding her, she said: “Sister, my mom is taking me out for lunch, and afterward she might have other activities to prepare with some other aunties. I don’t want to go. I want to leave right after lunch. Will you come and pick me up then?”
“Sister, why aren’t you saying anything? You don’t want to? We haven’t even progressed much, and our feelings are already this distant? You don’t even want to pick me up and take me home…”
Jokingly, Mo Yingxue put down her spoon, took a napkin, and wiped imaginary tears from her cheeks.
“Mm… mm…” Yue Lei’s mouth was completely full of ice cream. Eating it so quickly gave her a brain freeze, and she couldn’t swallow it or speak. While anxiously trying to eat the ice cream quickly, she widened her eyes to accuse Mo Yingxue. She raised her hand to cover her mouth and tell her not to talk nonsense.
But Mo Yingxue continued her solo performance, getting more dramatic and acting like Lin Daiyu. Yue Lei was frantic. She steeled herself and swallowed all the ice cream. Finally, her mouth was free, and she was no longer mute.
Enduring the headache from gulping down the cold dessert, she furiously pulled Mo Yingxue into her arms. Yue Lei was so exasperated by the naughty kitten that she was nearly incoherent. She asked with red-rimmed eyes: “What nonsense are you talking about?! Whose feelings are distant?!”
“You and I…” Mo Yingxue was about to say more, but seeing her state, a slight sense of fear arose in her heart. However, she had gone too far into the performance to stop now.
But as soon as she spoke those few words, Yue Lei fiercely blocked the rest of her speech. Yue Lei was kissing her. Her mouth was sweet and cool from the dessert, yet the kiss was urgent and ferocious, a punishment that was completely unlike their usual ones. The unfamiliar excitement made Mo Yingxue’s heart race, and one half of her body went soft.
Yue Lei knew her wife said that on purpose, but she couldn’t help getting angry. She kissed her deeply and heavily, as if she wanted to tear out her heart and show her how much she loved her. Only when Mo Yingxue couldn’t take it anymore and started pinching her did Yue Lei end the kiss.
Looking at Mo Yingxue’s slightly red lips, Yue Lei finally began to panic. She pulled on her genuinely angry wife’s arm, softened her voice, and looked at her with misty eyes: “Xiao Xue, did I hurt you? I’m sorry, I just got a little excited.”
“You…” Mo Yingxue was about to scold her, but Yue Lei looked so much like a tiny puppy with wet eyes, afraid of being abandoned by its owner. She found her utterly adorable and smiled, no longer arguing. She slapped Yue Lei’s hand away: “Go gentler next time. Your kissing scared me a bit. I felt like you were going to eat me…”
Mo Yingxue’s ears turned redder as she spoke. She finally focused her gaze on the banana split. She picked up a spoon, no longer looking at Yue Lei. She seriously drew a line down the center of the sundae: “I’m not feeding you anymore. We’ll eat separately. That side is yours, and this side is mine.”
When it was almost time, Yue Lei drove Mo Yingxue toward the agreed-upon restaurant. While waiting at a red light, she asked curiously: “Who are you having dinner with this time?”
Mo Yingxue reapplied lipstick in the mirror: “My mother’s friend. My mom said her friend’s daughter was my kindergarten classmate, but that was so long ago, I have no memory of it.”
Yue Lei sounded slightly jealous: “So, you’re two childhood sweethearts. All those childhood memories are sure to come flooding back as soon as you meet. That sounds nice.”
Mo Yingxue caught the hidden meaning in her words and glanced at her. Her expression was strange: “You and Lin Zhixi grew up together, too, so you’re also two sweethearts, and you’re still in touch.” She raised an eyebrow and put the lipstick back in her bag: “Tell me, are you recommending Fencheng for the trip because you desperately want to see Lin Zhixi?”
Yue Lei hadn’t expected Mo Yingxue to shift the fire onto her and quickly defended herself: “What kind of relationship could I have with her? We’re just ordinary friends—no, we’re slightly better than ordinary, like mischievous friends!”
Mo Yingxue pulled out a long tube of mascara from her bag, pretended it was a gun barrel, and held it against Yue Lei’s waist: “Confess honestly, are you two really just mischievous friends? You both like girls. Haven’t you ever had feelings for each other?”
“No! Absolutely not!” Yue Lei looked nervous: “Madam, you have a gun, so I’ll confess honestly! Lin Zhixi matured early and had several girlfriends, though she started staying single after college! But my brain is slow to mature, so all I could do was watch! And before I met you, I never liked anyone!”
“Ha, so you finally admit you like me.” Mo Yingxue retracted the mascara, looking smug, her tail practically wagging in the air.
Yue Lei hadn’t directly expressed her romantic feelings to her wife this lifetime. They were only in a relationship of mutual companionship and hugging. Would her wife allow her to cross that line? Yue Lei’s heart tightened, and she carefully observed Mo Yingxue’s expression.
To her surprise, Mo Yingxue was staring straight at her, their eyes meeting.
“Xiao Xue, I… I can like…” Yue Lei was about to ask.
Then Mo Yingxue pulled her gaze away, looking tensely ahead: “Watch the road, watch the road! That taxi was swerving and almost hit us!”
The romantic atmosphere instantly shattered, and she lost the chance to ask for a formal relationship. Well, Mo Yingxue has always seen my feelings for her anyway. If I don’t say it now, I will eventually. Yue Lei regretfully withdrew her attention and focused on driving.
On the other side, Mo Yingxue tightly clutched the seatbelt, looking like she’d been frightened by the erratically driven taxi. But in reality, her emotions were on a rollercoaster. Their relationship was perfect right now, like the most intimate of friends.
But Mo Yingxue knew herself too well. Once they were officially together, the terrible, nerve-wracking things that came with the sweetness and tenderness would emerge. She wouldn’t say it out loud. But she would develop many dark thoughts. She would want Yue Lei to always put her first, to focus all her attention on her. Ideally, Yue Lei would abandon all friends, all dreams, all future plans, and be with her day and night. Even if they hated each other, they couldn’t separate.
But nobody dates like that.
If they really got together.
She would destroy everything…
“We’re here.” Yue Lei stopped the car and saw Mo Yingxue wasn’t moving. She squeezed her hand: “Don’t worry. Just text me when you’re done eating, and I’ll come pick you up right away.”
