Chapter 32: Your Money Still Needs To Be Used To Support Me.
The Xiayu family (the cats) have recovered well. The mother cat’s major issues have mostly healed. And the weakest, Baoyu (Torrential Rain) and Maomao Yu (Drizzle), are growing strong from drinking the Maine Coon mother’s milk every day.
Yue Lei quickly fed the large cat the meal Aunt Wang had prepared, then lovingly handled the kittens one by one, sending her wife a lot of pointless cat videos.
The doctor said the Xiayu family could be discharged in a few days. Yue Lei was both looking forward to it and worried that she lacked experience and wouldn’t be able to raise the kittens well. She shared her worries with Mo Yingxue.
Xue: “If it doesn’t work, let them continue to stay in the hospital. Once they are over two months old, Aunt Wang can easily manage them.”
Seeing this, Yue Lei’s heart warmed. But after thinking about it, she decided to pick up the cats when the time came. A pet hospital cage was cramped after all. At home, the kittens could run around, and they could bond earlier if they went home sooner.
But the next reply made Yue Lei’s heart clench.
Xue: “Wu Jiajia said she wants an orange cat for good fortune. Will you give her one?”
Zhongyu (Moderate Rain) and Dayu (Heavy Rain) are two orange cats of different shades. Zhongyu is more lively, and Dayu purrs the moment you touch him. Yue Lei loved both and couldn’t choose which one to give Wu Jiajia.
Yue Lei usually replied instantly, but this time, Mo Yingxue waited two minutes and saw no response. Finding it amusing, she continued typing.
Xue: “If you can’t bear to, then forget it. We can afford to raise them.”
Yue Lei’s face flushed when she saw this message. Was her emotion that obvious? Her eyes swept over the stacked cages in the pet hospital, which mostly housed adult or sub-adult cats that were there for spaying/neutering. Most were fat and huge, big enough to crush a bed.
Right now, the kittens she rescued were only slightly bigger than a palm, so raising them was stress-free, but they would grow that big eventually. Yue Lei fantasized about holding Mo Yingxue while sleeping, surrounded by six adult cats. Her mind felt both happy and a little crowded.
It really would be better to give a few away sooner.
Yue Lei: “We can afford to raise them, but we don’t need to raise all of them. See which one she likes. Photo x10, Video x4”
Xue: “Are you really willing to give them away?”
Yue Lei: “Mmm. The doctor said they should stay with the mother cat for at least two or three months. The kittens will be the naughtiest then. So, let’s give them away. Ask if anyone else wants one. Excluding Baoyu and Maomao Yu, the others can be given away.”
In Yue Lei’s heart, Baoyu and Maomao Yu were the most special. They were the children the mother cat had abandoned. They were so small and weak when she first saw them. She couldn’t trust anyone else with them.
Xue: “Okay, I like those two the best, too.”
They were always snuggled close together, as if they would never be separated. One is like you, one is like me.
Since Mo Yingxue moved into Yue Lei’s bedroom, Yue Lei has been going to bed earlier every day.
Although they don’t do anything much besides hugging, and occasionally kissing, she is still extremely happy!
If they had been this harmonious in the previous life, she would have had more confidence.
She definitely wouldn’t have divorced, and she definitely wouldn’t have rushed around alone keeping the news a secret.
Before Yue Lei transmigrated, the Qingyin platform already had many popular vertical short dramas.
The ecosystem and system for short dramas were complete.
But eight years ago, there were hardly any serious short drama production teams, and the general public preferred funny clips that they watched and forgot instantly, with no context.
Yingzi was excited after hearing her news and quickly went back to contact production teams. But this time, her money was useless.
As soon as they heard she was filming a vertical short drama, they refused without even reading the script. Yingzi hit walls everywhere.
Since her health was poor, she couldn’t meet people face-to-face, so the project couldn’t move forward. She complained to Yue Lei a few times, and Yue Lei was troubled for a long time too.
Today, coming back after picking up Mo Yingxue from school, Yue Lei was discussing this matter with Yingzi during dinner. She felt a kick on her calf. She looked up at Mo Yingxue. The girl tilted her head, her eyes dark as she watched her. “Sister, why are you always looking at your phone?”
Yue Lei sighed. “Sigh, the new amateur director Yingzi found quit again. This time, she found someone who just graduated and has no work, but they still looked down on this small job.”
“You’re still worried about the short drama…” Mo Yingxue understood. She looked at Yue Lei and suddenly smiled. “Sister is the female lead, so how about I be the director?”
Yue Lei instantly brightened up. She put down her phone, leaned in, and grabbed Mo Yingxue’s hand, her eyes shining. “Can you really do it?”
Mo Yingxue pulled her hand away and stroked Yue Lei’s thigh. “If you want me to be the director, you have to show sincerity.”
“I think we should forget it,” Yue Lei didn’t understand her hint and got distracted. “Your coursework is heavy, and you have a lot of things to do. You can’t spare the time for this. I can’t let you delay your studies.”
Mo Yingxue gave her an annoyed look, an attempt at a seductive glance gone wrong. “Then just film it yourself. Self-directed, self-shot, and self-acted. Doesn’t that sound impressive?”
“But I don’t know how!” Yue Lei felt like a student facing a physics problem she couldn’t solve during an exam. Desperate and confused.
Mo Yingxue saw her looking like a silly dog, and her annoyance faded. She seriously suggested, “You can learn first. Our school has a directing department. If you want to learn, you can audit the classes. Learn as you film.”
Yue Lei was surprised. “I can do that?” She never went to college, which was always a regret. Although she went to the Southwest Academy of Arts every day recently, she always felt a little guilty and had to dress very fashionably and walk with a straight back to conceal her high school diploma.
Not knowing she was secretly insecure about her education, Mo Yingxue countered, “Why not? Many people who want to change majors and pursue graduate school will audit classes. The more students, the happier the teachers are.” Seeing Yue Lei listening carefully, she added, “Anyway, you come to the school to pick me up every day. You might as well find something to do. As long as you don’t disturb the students and teachers, no one will say anything. I’ll give you my student ID card, and you can go anywhere.”
“That’s a great idea! I asked Fang Dan before. She said she didn’t have enough energy or ability and would only agree to be an assistant director at best. That girl lacks courage, but I’m bold! I dare to be the director!” The more Yue Lei listened, the more feasible it seemed. She muttered, “I also heard that professional filming equipment is very expensive, but Yingzi should be able to handle those problems.”
Mo Yingxue glanced at the hand on her shoulder. “I can also give you money.”
Yue Lei looked at her and said righteously, “No way. Your money still needs to be used to support me.” Yingzi was paying for her own hobby, so even if the money was wasted, she would be happy to spend it. But asking Mo Yingxue to pay required considering the return on investment. Right now, this project looked like a pure loss. Yue Lei could not, and would not, allow her wife to lose money. If she couldn’t pay her salary in the end, she would have no excuse to stay, and the two would have to go their separate ways.
“Your cheek seems to be getting thicker and thicker. Are you happy letting me support you?” Mo Yingxue couldn’t help but laugh. She would sometimes tease Yue Lei and intentionally say things like that, but why did Yue Lei already self-identify as the “spoiled little wife” after just a few times? Why was she adapting so well?
Yue Lei didn’t think her wife was insulting her. She intentionally burrowed into her arms. “Happy, extremely happy. You give me food, you give me a bed to sleep in, and you let me hug you.”
Yue Lei told Yingzi that she would audit the directing department before becoming the director. Yingzi quickly accepted her explanation.
Yingzi: “Do as you say. Anyway, I’ve been discouraged lately from looking for directors. They’re all old-timers and young brats! Plus, I thought about it. My favorite things are the video materials you sent me before. If someone else filmed it, your ideas might clash.”
Yue Lei: “I feel like it will take at least one semester of studying before we can officially start filming. This semester, I’ll continue to work with Fang Dan and film some two-minute videos as behind-the-scenes content for you to enjoy. I’ll leave the script and other things to you.”
Yingzi: “Why didn’t you say so earlier! Queen Yingzi is fully resurrected! From now on, I don’t need to commission anything else. I’m the happiest little girl in the world, getting to see a living, breathing Zhang Zhenni!”
Yue Lei: “Speaking of Zhang Zhenni… are you sure you want to give me the account you managed for her? It has over 100,000 followers.”
The effort and money Yingzi put into Zhang Zhenni were beyond what ordinary people could understand. But Yue Lei understood her very well. She knew Yingzi genuinely wanted Zhang Zhenni to come alive and wanted everyone to know and like her. That feeling was probably similar to how Yue Lei constantly wanted to show affection when she was with her wife. Although, as far as she knew, Yingzi’s feelings for Zhang Zhenni weren’t romantic love, but a mix of friendship and familial affection.
Yingzi:”Didn’t you read all the settings I sent you? I feel like the few messages you tried posting were completely in-character. I’m handing everything over to you from now on. One thousand kuai per post, paid monthly!”
Yingzi: “You don’t know how happy I am to receive dialogue that isn’t me talking to myself or an AI writing something out of character.”
Yue Lei: “Zhang Zhenni is a happy baby.”
Yingzi: “I’m counting on you, CEO Yue!”
This semester was already coming to an end. Yue Lei secretly audited a few classes in the directing department and realized she understood nothing.
However, she managed to get the contact information of a few students and asked them for the course schedule.
She also sent them small red packets and asked them to contact her when they turned in their final projects and the teachers publicly reviewed the students’ directed works.
Seeing bad examples would help her know what to avoid in actual filming.
Yue Lei also slyly made a deal with Mo Yingxue. After the semester ended, they would travel all over the country during the summer vacation.
On the surface, she said a painter needs to get out and experience the world to gain inspiration. But in reality, it was to make up for the regret of the previous life, where she always took her streamers on trips and left Mo Yingxue alone at home.
In the previous life, Mo Yingxue didn’t like dealing with her streamers.
Yue Lei invited her a few times, but she always made the atmosphere very cold, making everyone tense.
So, Yue Lei agreed with Mo Yingxue that she wouldn’t bring her along to reward the streamers anymore. She said at the time that she would make it up to her in other ways.
But all things considered, only her efforts in bed counted… She didn’t think much of it then, but now she thought that her wife in the previous life might have felt neglected. Yue Lei secretly warned herself that she absolutely couldn’t do that this time.
On a beautiful, sunny morning, while Mo Yingxue was busy preparing for her final project, Yue Lei drove Aunt Wang to the pet hospital to pick up the Xiayu family.
