Chapter 25: Xiao Xue, Thank You for Your Generosity.
As if she heard her footsteps, Mo Yingxue turned her head and asked in surprise, “Yue Lei, why are you here so early?”
Yue Lei walked quickly toward her, her voice flat: “I was afraid of traffic from the rain.”
Ever since they met, Mo Yingxue had been calling her “sister,” but today she was calling her by her name. Was it because there were other people around?
But when she got closer, the bit of jealousy in her heart disappeared.
She saw a few girls squatting in the hallway, surrounded by two mewling kittens. One had a white head and body and a yellow tail, and the other was a black and white cat with a split face.
They looked less than a month old, and the blue film on their eyes hadn’t faded yet. They seemed unable to see things clearly.
Their steps were wobbly and shaky, and they looked pitiful.
The little black and white one was clearly much braver. When the girls touched it, it would hiss menacingly.
The other one would just go stiff when she was picked up, with only panic in her eyes.
Yue Lei temporarily set aside her dissatisfaction.
She lightened her steps and squatted down with them: “Where’s their mother?”
A girl who seemed to have been whispering about her and Mo Yingxue before answered: “She seems to have run away. The mother cat is a tortoiseshell. This is her first time being a mom. She was so scared after giving birth that her maternal instincts aren’t strong.
She would get angry while nursing the kittens and would kick them around.
She gave birth to five, and these two are the smallest.”
Zhu Yi looked at her: “These kittens were on the hallway during class today. We thought the mother cat might have been moving the kittens and forgot these two. But they’re still here after school.”
Yue Lei looked at her with a hint of provocation and intimately put her hand on Mo Yingxue’s shoulder: “You’re not allowed to have cats at school, are you? What are you planning to do?”
Zhu Yi said, a little unsure: “Take them back to the dorm first? The dorm supervisor doesn’t patrol on weekends, so we can hide them for a couple of days.”
This comment had the kind of innocence that was unique to college students, living for today without a care for tomorrow. Yue Lei smiled and didn’t respond.
She squeezed Mo Yingxue’s shoulder and asked, “Xiao Xue, are you okay with cats? I have a lot of free time, so I can take care of them.”
In their previous life, they were together for seven years, and they didn’t have kids or pets, but they would sometimes go to animal shelters to help out or just simply donate things.
Yue Lei loved small animals and always wanted to pet other people’s dogs on the street.
But in her previous life, she was always busy with her company, raising her streamers like children and worrying about everything.
In the last two years, she was less involved, but she was always traveling, so she didn’t have the time or energy to raise a cat or dog.
Mo Yingxue looked at her hand on her shoulder and didn’t move away: “I was just thinking about whether to take them back, but I’m busy with my studies, so you’ll have to take care of them.”
“Then let’s take them home.” Yue Lei moved the items in her bag to one side, took off her shirt jacket, and wrapped the two kittens inside.
She looked up at the increasingly gloomy sky, her eyes scanning the surroundings: “The weather forecast said it’s going to rain heavily. Let’s find the rest of the kittens and the mother cat.”
Mo Yingxue hadn’t said anything, but Zhu Yi raised her voice: “There are six in total. You’re going to take all of them?”
Yue Lei: “I’ll raise them first and find people to adopt them when they get bigger. It’s going to rain for several days in a row, and I’m afraid they won’t make it.”
After speaking, she took Mo Yingxue’s arm and walked toward the small garden, rudely telling Zhu Yi and her friends: “We’ll look over here, and you guys look over there.”
Zhu Yi was furious, but she also felt that Yue Lei was indeed doing a good deed, so she stomped her foot and left with her friends.
Finding cats depended on both luck and a sharp eye. Yue Lei held Mo Yingxue’s hand and walked forward. Both of them were busy scanning the bushes and grass, so they didn’t have time to talk.
After they rounded two corners, Mo Yingxue pulled her arm away.
Yue Lei sighed with regret and explained, “I’m sorry. I forgot just now.”
She tilted her head toward the direction Zhu Yi and her friends had just left: “Zhu Yi and her friends thought we were still together, so I was a little more intimate.
Otherwise, they would think you broke up after just a few days, and that would be bad for your reputation.”
Mo Yingxue didn’t respond: “We have to take the kittens to the vet later.”
“I always thought you didn’t like animals. Otherwise, I would have gotten one a long time ago,” Yue Lei said. Halfway through her sentence, she realized that they hadn’t known each other for very long in this life, so this statement didn’t make sense.
Seeing Mo Yingxue’s questioning gaze, she quickly added: “I love both cats and dogs. Our house is so big. As soon as I moved in, I felt that we should get some little furry kids to bring some life into the house.”
Mo Yingxue nodded, accepting her excuse: “You have to take good care of them and make sure they don’t go to the third floor.”
“Does Auntie not like them? I’ll remember that.”
Yue Lei opened her bag and felt the two little furballs curled up inside: “You two have to be good, or I won’t be able to afford it if you tear up the house.”
Mo Yingxue turned her head to look at her: “You’re making a lot of money from live streaming, aren’t you? The top two supporters have sent you a lot of gifts.”
“Huh? Xiao Xue, you watched my live stream again?” Yue Lei was a little embarrassed, thinking she was complimenting her: “I thought you didn’t come to the makeup stream last time. The atmosphere was pretty good that day.”
Mo Yingxue: “…”
Her original intention was to provoke her a little so she wouldn’t think she could fly away with her newfound confidence.
She didn’t expect this person to miss the point completely, and now it made her seem like she cared a lot about her.
So Mo Yingxue could only say: “I went to watch after you sent me the photos. When I saw you were removing your makeup, I left.”
“Shh…”
Yue Lei didn’t listen to her at all. Her attention was focused on finding the cats. She happened to see a black and yellow tail hiding under the loropetalum.
She leaned closer to Mo Yingxue and whispered in her ear: “I see something moving over there. Can you hold my bag for me?”
In the next second, Yue Lei took out her shirt from her bag and shot out like an arrow.
She left Mo Yingxue standing there, stunned.
They were really lucky. They really found the tortoiseshell mother cat.
Yue Lei used her shirt to wrap it up and grabbed the scruff of its neck. The mother cat struggled desperately.
The person and the cat were in a stalemate. Yue Lei was hissed at every now and then. The tortoiseshell cat was like a very lively fish, twisting and turning frantically.
Fortunately, it didn’t scratch people, or she wouldn’t have been able to control it.
Cats hissing can be very scary, but luckily, Yue Lei’s willpower was strong, and she wasn’t scared away, nor did she let the mother cat go.
When she returned to Mo Yingxue’s side, she saw that she had already taken the two kittens out and put them to the side, emptying her tote bag.
Yue Lei was incredibly glad that she had brought a large-capacity bag today. While stuffing the tortoiseshell cat inside, she praised her: “So smart! I was just worrying about how to take her to the hospital! Hiss, stop hissing at me. I’m saving you!”
The dark, small space gave the mother cat a certain sense of security.
After she zipped up the bag, it only made soft sounds and didn’t struggle as fiercely.
Yue Lei was about to continue looking for the kittens, but Mo Yingxue asked her, “Sister, are you not hurt?”
“I’m not!” Yue Lei rolled up her sleeves and showed her her smooth arms with a smile: “Maybe the cats that grew up at school are more friendly. She’s just scared. She doesn’t know she should scratch or bite.”
It turned out that the tortoiseshell cat just wanted to abandon the two they had picked up before. Yue Lei quickly found the other three little ones nearby who wanted to escape but couldn’t because their legs were too short.
Just then, Zhu Yi and her friends also came around the corner and felt the rain on their faces.
Yue Lei quickly said goodbye to them and drove to the animal hospital with Mo Yingxue.
This time, Mo Yingxue sat in the back, preventing the mother cat from getting out of the tote bag while holding the five kittens with Yue Lei’s shirt.
The rain was pouring outside, and the sound made people feel uneasy.
But at least they all survived. The trip wasn’t a waste.
Yue Lei was driving when she suddenly heard Mo Yingxue laughing. She looked straight ahead: “Xiao Xue, what are you laughing about?”
“We’re living together and raising cats now,” Mo Yingxue said out of the blue.
Yue Lei didn’t understand what she meant, so she could only force a response: “Yeah, I hope I can make more money. Otherwise, if I can’t do it anymore, the kittens will have to live on the streets with me.”
Mo Yingxue didn’t want to argue with her about that.
She thought for a moment and asked: “Have you ever thought about buying a house? Someone in our neighborhood is selling a shell of a villa.”
This suggestion immediately got to Yue Lei.
If she could buy a house here, even if she and Mo Yingxue ended their employment relationship, they would still be able to see each other often.
If she had had this opportunity before her bankruptcy in her previous life, Yue Lei would have agreed without hesitation.
As long as the house was in good condition and livable, she would have paid the deposit immediately, the sooner the transfer of ownership, the better.
But now she was short on cash, and this was a villa neighborhood. Every house was a single-family villa, with a starting price of twenty million…
She was still short three zeros from her available balance.
Yue Lei answered without any humility: “It’s a pipe dream to buy a house here with my current ability. But I still want to buy a house. I’ll save up for a down payment first.”
But Mo Yingxue seemed determined to sell her that villa.
She said to herself: “That house is only two stories high, so it shouldn’t be that expensive. It’s right in front of my house, with the two villas separated by a central garden.
No one has lived there for a long time, but they hired a gardener to take care of the garden, so the yard looks good all year round.
The inside should also be very clean. If you don’t have enough money, I can lend it to you.”
The more she talked, the more bitter Yue Lei felt.
She stared intently at the license plate of the car in front of her, her tone cold: “I know it’s a good place. If you like it, you can buy it. But don’t mention lending me money again. I can’t pay it back.”
“That’s not what I meant…”
Mo Yingxue didn’t expect Yue Lei to say that. She clenched the hem of her clothes, her mood instantly becoming as gloomy as the rainy weather.
“I’m sorry,” Yue Lei didn’t mean to hurt Mo Yingxue with her insecurity. She let out a long breath: “Xiao Xue, thank you for your generosity.”
“But even if I have cats, I can’t live in such a nice house alone. Compared to the houses here, my ideas are probably more realistic. Before I make a lot of money, I will only consider houses that I can afford.”
“I understand.” Hearing this, Mo Yingxue finally felt a little better.
She looked down at the kittens in her arms. The five little ones were warm and cuddled together, as if they would never be separated.
She wanted that too.
So she gathered her courage and insisted: “Then if you find a house you like, be sure to tell me. I’ll buy the one next to you then.”
“Xiao Xue…” A huge surge of joy suddenly rose in Yue Lei’s heart. She felt her blood flow accelerate.
She pulled over to the side of the road, turned around, and knelt in the driver’s seat, facing Mo Yingxue.
She asked her, her voice tight: “Are you saying that you want to live with me? Even if I move away, you want to move with me?”
