Pregnant with My Late Husband’s Child - Chapter 1
[It is reported that Li Yixing, the adopted son of Alliance Security Minister General Stan Davis, will hold a wedding with Alliance Major General Feng Zhao in one month’s time. — Reported by Hope, reporter for the Alliance Gazette, March 18, 331 New Era]
As soon as this news was released, it quickly climbed to the homepage of the Alliance’s largest online platform: the StarNet.
On his wrist-device, the blonde former Alliance General, Stan Davis, flashed a standard, eight-toothed smile at the barrage of microphones and cameras from various media outlets.
“Yes, Yixing will be marrying my student, the newly promoted Alliance Major General Feng Zhao.”
In the background, a reporter asked loudly, “General Davis! May I ask if this is a political marriage?”
The reporter’s question was exceptionally sharp and bold: “No one in the entire Alliance is unaware that both the Davis and Feng families are massive. Is the union of these two just a political arrangement?”
Before the reporter could finish, he was interrupted by Stan.
“Of course not!” The once-renowned former Alliance General appeared surprised. “Arranged marriages were obsolete products of the Ancient Earth era; how could they exist in the New Era?”
“Yixing and Zhao were classmates at the Dacles Military Academy and have shared a deep bond.”
“They are, of course, in a free love…”
The image of General Davis within the projection suddenly vanished before he could say another word. The office of the Alliance Security Minister fell into a silence so profound that one could hear a pin drop.
Light spilled in from the floor-to-ceiling windows, landing on a tall figure standing inside the office, clad in the deep blue uniform of the Alliance, with black military boots on his feet.
His face had clean, smooth lines, a high bridge of the nose, and deep eyes. His eyelashes were long and dark, resembling a pair of black butterfly wings. His pupils and hair were a rare ink-black—a trait seldom seen in the New Era. Amidst the melting pot of various races, black hair and black eyes of Eastern descent from the Ancient Earth era were rarer than winning two hundred million Alliance credits in a lottery.
His skin could be described as pale, and against the contrast of the deep blue uniform, it revealed a luster like white porcelain—as if he had not seen the sun in over a decade.
His long, straight hands, which seemed born to play the piano, were tightly encased in black leather gloves.
He was none other than the man at the center of the news: the Alliance Security Minister and adopted son of General Davis, Li Yixing.
At this moment, his mind was replaying Davis’s confident assertion.
“Free love.”
“Deep bond.”
Li Yixing could not help but sneer aloud.
Describing himself and Feng Zhao like that?
It was nothing short of alarmist nonsense.
They should just be grateful if they did not end up strangling each other.
Just then, the office door was violently shoved open!
Li Yixing lifted his eyelids to look at the intruder.
The person was also wearing a deep blue uniform. The young man, who had the same blonde hair as Stan Davis, stormed into the room, slammed both hands onto the desk in front of Li Yixing, and demanded sternly, “Li! How could you agree to Father’s arrangement for a political marriage?”
The security detail behind him said frantically, “Minister Li, Major General Ross insisted on coming in. We could not stop him.”
Li Yixing was not angry; he merely raised a hand, signaling them to withdraw first.
Once the door was firmly shut, Li Yixing rose from his swivel chair to face his adopted brother, Ross Davis.
Ross Davis clearly could not accept this sudden, explosive news. His emerald eyes were filled with rage as he shouted hoarsely, “If you are going to marry Feng Zhao, then what about me?”
“Mother once said that as long as I became a Major General, you would be my partner!” Ross roared. “But you and Father kept this from me! And now you are going to marry Feng Zhao!”
“Then what about me? What am I supposed to be?”
Li Yixing looked up, meeting Ross’s eyes directly, and let out a laugh that sounded far from friendly.
“How would I know what you are supposed to be? Your desire to marry me is a pipe dream, because it does not maximize our interests,” Li Yixing said with cold indifference. His thin lips parted, spilling words that chilled the heart even further: “The Davis family would never allow you to marry a partner who provides no benefit to you—and I, an orphan whose parents both died on the battlefield, am even less qualified.”
“But if I marry Feng Zhao in the name of the Davis family’s adopted son,” Li Yixing said with a mocking smile, “the Feng family will become a rare asset to your Davis family.”
“Besides, you can still have another partner who can assist you. Perhaps Mr. Rosen of the White family; he is a researcher at the Alliance Life Science Research Institute, and his sister, Audrey, is one of the current Chief Officials of the Alliance.”
The rapid-fire remarks left Ross stiff for a moment. He then bellowed, “We can refuse! Why must we agree to these things?”
The entire office fell into an eerie silence for a moment due to Ross’s question.
“Ross, my dear brother, when you say such things,” Li Yixing looked at Ross as if he were looking at a fool, “please use your brain to consider whether we have the capability to refuse, rather than demanding the impossible.”
“Besides, we are only brothers, and I do not like you.”
Finally, Li Yixing said calmly, “Please go home, brother.”
However, Ross grabbed Li Yixing’s hand in a backhanded motion and took the opportunity to peel off Li Yixing’s black leather glove.
The hand was pale and slender, with faint veins visible on the back, looking powerless and fragile.
Before Li Yixing could pull away, Ross dropped to one knee and performed a hand-kissing gesture.
As his soft lips pressed against Li Yixing’s cold hand, Ross looked up slightly, his handsome face filled with uncontrollable rage.
“No, Li,” Ross said, “I will not let us be ‘only brothers’!”
“You don’t like me? You are lying. Even if you say you don’t like me,” Ross raised an eyebrow, “do you actually like that Feng Zhao?”
“At the Dacles Military Academy, you were already at odds with each other,” Ross tightened his grip on Li Yixing’s hand, preventing him from pulling away. “Being with him, you will not be happy.”
“We could elope,” Ross said, becoming increasingly unhinged, though his eyes burned with intensity. “Go to a safe place.”
Li Yixing forcefully yanked his hand back.
“Please do not interfere with my decisions, Ross Davis,” Li Yixing said, using his full name. “I will not go back on my promise, and I ask that you respect me. If you are willing, you may come and serve as my best man on the day of the wedding.”
Upon hearing this, Ross stood up in a fury, reaching out to grab Li Yixing and intending to seal that sharp-tongued mouth with his own lips.
However, the moment he extended his hand, his move was already anticipated by Li Yixing.
Li Yixing gripped his wrist and pulled it backward, swept his long leg behind Ross’s knees, pressed his shoulder against Ross’s chest, and exerted force through his arm and waist to heave Ross over!
The entire sequence of movements was smooth, flowing, and incredibly sharp.
Thump!
With a heavy sound of an object hitting the floor, Ross was slammed to the ground by Li Yixing with a shoulder throw!
The massive noise startled the security guards outside, and urgent knocking sounded: “Minister Li?”
Li Yixing’s voice, as piercing as metal, rang out: “Apologies, my wrist-device fell.”
The large “wrist-device” that had been thrown to the floor by his younger brother scrambled up from the ground, looking disheveled. He wanted to say something, but was cut off by Li Yixing.
“Ross, if you really want to change something,” Li Yixing patted his palms together and said, looking down from above, “you should not come to me. You should go to your father, my adoptive father, General Stan Davis.”
By the time Ross had fully stood up, Li Yixing had already put his black leather gloves back on. He opened the office door, and the security guards outside immediately lowered their heads to greet him: “Greetings, Minister Li.”
Li Yixing nodded politely and headed toward the elevator.
The sound of his military boots against the floor was crisp and rhythmic. From a distance, Li Yixing’s legs looked long and straight, wrapped in his uniform and boots. Because he was tall and lean, he had that deadly, statuesque quality where it seemed as though his entire figure was all legs from the chest down.
People greeted him all the way. As the youngest minister in the history of the Alliance Security Department, he was accomplished at a young age. At twenty, he graduated with excellent grades from the Alliance’s best military academy—the Special Operations Department of Dacles Military Academy. He immediately joined the Alliance Special Operations Force for seven years, where it is said he worked in intelligence, accumulating many honors. Later, he retired due to injuries and was posthumously awarded the rank of Colonel by the Alliance. After retirement, he entered the Security Department, and within just three years, he became the Minister.
Li Yixing arrived at the underground level, used his wrist-device to unlock his aircraft, and selected the route home.
It was now 7:00 PM, past the official clock-out time for the Alliance. The aircraft drove out of the Alliance Security Department building and flew outward.
The aerial lanes were densely packed with points of light, and the underground lanes were filled with vehicles.
It was currently the evening rush hour, and the roads were slightly congested, but they soon cleared up under the guidance of traffic robots. Li Yixing flew for ten minutes and arrived at his home.
As soon as he entered, the living room lit up. The home-assistant robot brought Li Yixing his nutritional supplement as usual—his master had almost no desire for food; compared to a hot dinner, his master seemed to prefer the efficiency of nutritional injections to resolve hunger.
Although the home-assistant robot 587, as a rigorous AI, had once placed a massive amount of data and calculation results in front of Li Yixing, trying to persuade him to give up the nutritional injections and eat a real meal that was visually appealing and aromatic…
It had not succeeded.
While the master was administering the nutritional injection, 587 dutifully turned on the projection.
This was Li Yixing’s habit: to play news updates every night during dinner time to pass the time.
A figure suddenly popped up on the opposing screen. He was wearing a dark green military ceremonial uniform and holding a military cap. His face was handsome, and his chestnut hair seemed slightly flattened by the cap, but this did not hinder his aggressive presence, like a fierce tiger ready to hunt at any moment.
“Ah? A political marriage? Of course not.”
A voice, familiar enough to make Li Yixing feel physically nauseous, echoed in the living room.
Li Yixing looked up, expressionless, at that smiling, annoying face in the projection. His lips parted, and he answered the reporter in a tone filled with genuine pleasure: “As Teacher Davis said, Yixing and I are in a free love relationship with a deep bond.”
Having been disgusted twice in one day, Li Yixing’s long eyebrows twitched, and he felt a sudden urge to vomit.
