Poor Relationship - Chapter 6
“Alright”
Xu Yizhou had no choice but to agree, but before he could finish his sentence, he was interrupted.
“Xu Yizhou, didn’t you say we were going to play ball together today?”
Wen Jiang, who was sitting nearby, suddenly spoke up, his voice clearly picked up by the phone’s microphone. Xu Yizhou, who had just slumped back in defeat, looked at Wen Jiang in surprise and quickly followed up:
“Right, right, sorry, Teacher Wen. I already have plans today.”
“Alright then, let’s make it another time, Teacher Xu.”
Wen Shi’s tone was filled with disappointment. After saying that, the other party hung up.
Xu Yizhou let out a long sigh of relief, his eyes sparkling as he looked at Wen Jiang. He threw his arms around his neck and excitedly planted a loud kiss on his cheek.
“Bro, I love you so much!”
How could there be such an understanding, helpful, and wonderful brother like this! Wen Jiang didn’t say anything. But Xu Yizhou could clearly see that Wen Jiang’s ears had turned bright red. After the excitement wore off and he realized what he had just done, Xu Yizhou awkwardly pulled his hand back.
And in that instant, he suddenly remembered what had happened before—all those cringe-worthy memories came flooding back. If his brother really was then what had he just done?
The atmosphere suddenly became a bit awkward. Xu Yizhou cleared his throat uncomfortably, wishing he could slap himself. What a beast. Wen Jiang stood up and went straight upstairs.
Xu Yizhou watched the refined figure in the usual white shirt and suit pants, raising a hand to his forehead to calm himself down. They were brothers, after all, and when they were kids, he used to hug and kiss Wen Jiang all the time. It shouldn’t be a big deal, right?
But Wen Jiang’s reaction seemed angry?
No way, no way. Wen Jiang couldn’t be that petty, could he? Still, this was the first time Xu Yizhou had ever seen him blush like this. Even during that incredibly awkward and cringe-worthy scene last time, Wen Jiang hadn’t batted an eye.
How could just one kiss make him react like this?
This didn’t seem like the expression a domineering CEO should have—it was even more innocent than his own. After struggling with himself for a long time, Xu Yizhou decided to go apologize to Wen Jiang. Just as he reached the top of the stairs, a dark figure loomed over him. Xu Yizhou looked up and saw Wen Jiang. Wen Jiang was wearing a sports T-shirt and loose athletic shorts, and he had even changed into sneakers. Without his glasses, Wen Jiang’s facial features seemed softer in the light. He stood in front of Xu Yizhou, backlit.
“Bro?”
Xu Yizhou rubbed his eyes in disbelief, staring at the man dressed so casually in front of him.
He couldn’t imagine that just a moment ago, this same person had been wearing a V-neck white shirt and perfectly tailored suit pants, looking all serious and proper.
“Yeah, what’s wrong? Didn’t you say we were going to play ball? Why are you just standing there? Go change your clothes.”
Wen Jiang spoke calmly, as if nothing had just happened. It made Xu Yizhou feel like the flustered one instead. And when had he ever said they were going to play ball? He could barely run 800 meters, let alone play ball. But since Wen Jiang was already dressed and ready, it wouldn’t be right to back out now.
He could only nod and head back to his room to change. Wen Shi looked at the phone in his hand, raised an eyebrow, and returned to the private room. The music in the bar was deafeningly loud. The man sitting on the opposite sofa kissed the woman he was holding on his right before turning to look at Wen Shi.
“What’s wrong? Could it be that there’s someone even you, Wen Shi, can’t handle?”
The multicolored lights fell on Wen Shi’s earring, refracting a dazzling brilliance.
Wen Shi shook the wine glass in his hand, a cold and cruel smile curling at the corner of his mouth:
“Yeah, I met an interesting one.”
He sat down on the nearby sofa, and two fair-skinned men immediately snuggled up to him.
Ren Qi was hearing Wen Shi describe someone this way for the first time and couldn’t help but feel intrigued:
“Oh? Could it be that this time you’ve set your sights on someone who’s already taken?”
But even so, Ren Qi didn’t find it particularly strange, considering Wen Shi had been involved with all sorts of bizarre boys both abroad and domestically over the years.
“Mmm… pretty much.”
Wen Shi tilted his head back and drained the red wine in his glass, then licked his lips with lingering satisfaction.
“Only you could pull this off. So, how long do you plan to take this time?”
Ren Qi asked casually while flirting with the beauty beside him.
“No rush. Take it slow. I’ll get him eventually.”
Wen Shi raised an eyebrow, a flicker of excitement and wildness flashing in his eyes.
“You really do have a taste for the unusual.”
To be honest, Xu Yizhou first saw Wen Jiang playing basketball when he was a child.
Back then, Wen Jiang had just started middle school. Once, when Wen Jiang was late picking him up from school, Xu Yizhou went to the middle school campus by himself. He saw Wen Jiang running and sweating on the basketball court. Standing too far to see clearly, he ran closer for a better look. At the time, he didn’t understand basketball; he only knew to cheer loudly for Wen Jiang. His voice was so loud that everyone on the court turned to look.
Someone next to Wen Jiang nudged him with an elbow:
“Your little brother?”
“Yeah.”
Watching Xu Yizhou, a tiny figure with a big backpack, cheering him on, Wen Jiang couldn’t help but smile.
“Hey, you two, stop spacing out! Get ready for the pass!”
Someone urged them, and Wen Jiang hurriedly waved at Xu Yizhou before diving back into the game. Wen Jiang could always accurately shoot into the basket, even though its net was already torn. And besides the sweat on his face, his focus was even more intense.
Xu Yizhou got tired from standing and sat on the steps beside the court, propping his head in his hands as he watched intently.
They didn’t disperse until the school urged them to leave because it was closing time.
By then, Xu Yizhou was almost asleep and didn’t want to move, so Wen Jiang simply carried him home on his back. But after that time, Xu Yizhou never saw Wen Jiang play basketball again. Nor did Wen Jiang ever delay picking him up for any reason—he would always wait outside Xu Yizhou’s classroom before school ended. He still remembered how envious his classmates were back then, saying he had such a great older brother. He had been so proud.
Lost in thought, a sudden leap for a layup sent the ball crashing against the backboard with a loud thud. It spun around the rim before dropping through the hoop. Sitting on the sidelines watching, Xu Yizhou felt as if he had returned to those childhood days. He sat there, watching Wen Jiang sweat on the court. Only now it was different. Wen Jiang’s every move exuded the charm of a mature man, and his skills were far more refined than back then.
Moreover, when Wen Jiang leaped, the muscles of his abdomen came into view.
At this moment, Xu Yizhou couldn’t help but admire his brother’s physique—no wonder so many women coveted it. After just a short while of playing, Xu Yizhou was already struggling, so he simply ran to the side, sat down, and gulped water.
“Indeed, doing voice-over work all day long really makes you feel sluggish no matter what you do.”
Xu Yizhou couldn’t help but complain.
