Xie Ling was originally a modern-day doctor of traditional Chinese medicine. After an accident, he transmigrates into the poorest deaf man of Xie Family Village. His malicious relatives seize his farmland and drive him into the mountains to die.
There’s no problem; Xie Ling can treat his own deafness, and he can deal with those wicked relatives himself.
On his path of farming and self-reliance, he encounters an unexpected twist: while gathering herbs in the mountains, he rescues a gravely injured, frail young husband and discovers he can hear the man’s inner thoughts.
The villagers gossip:
“Did you see? That deaf man Xie Ling picked up a sickly fellow, one with a dim ‘pregnancy mole.’ That means he’s infertile. Looks like he’s rushing to marry into Xie Ling’s household. A deaf man and a barren husband, what a perfect match.”
But Xie Ling takes Shen Ziqiu’s hand and declares:
“No matter his condition, I will heal him. Remember this—it’s not that he’s desperate to marry me, but that I’m eager to wed him as my husband!”
Then, with a sharp edge hidden beneath his gentle doctor’s demeanor, Xie Ling warns:
“And if you don’t apologize to Ah Qiu right now, I’ll make sure you don’t leave this door alive!”
Later, when the crowd disperses, someone sneaks back to spy. Shen Ziqiu’s reddened eyes glance toward the furious man outside, while he cooperates with Xie Ling’s kiss—If you covet Doctor Xie, then let him see more.
One day, Xie Ling drinks a soup made from improperly cooked mushrooms. He stares in shock as his little husband sprouts cat ears… and then, horrified, notices a tail behind him!
