- Chapter 20 - She Really Is One Who Does Not Speak Often
“Atchoo!”
The Alpha, sitting lazily on the private room’s sofa looking through the song list, suddenly sneezed for no reason.
It made her mutter in confusion, “Is the air conditioning set too low? I do not feel cold, though.”
Ji Xicheng took the opportunity to grab the remote and raised the temperature by two degrees, not forgetting to tease her. “We are dressed about the same, so it probably has nothing to do with the temperature. Maybe someone is thinking of you!”
Thinking of me? Shen Nian blinked, remaining noncommittal toward Ji Xicheng’s joke.
Shen Nian had nothing to do at home and felt quite bored, so when Ji Xicheng invited her out to play, she went along. As it turned out, the “great place” this Alpha had mysteriously mentioned was actually a youth-style KTV.
Youth-style KTVs catered to young people. You could sing your heart out in a private room or join others for a karaoke battle; there were no complicated schemes, only joy. Supposedly, the best part of this place was the owner: multi-talented and responsive to every request. If you paid enough, she would even make two sets of jianbing guozi for you on the spot.
Shen Nian happened to be a bit hungry. Hearing that she could eat jianbing guozi, her eyes immediately lit up. Ji Xicheng felt that ordering street food at a KTV was beneath her status. To maintain her idol image, she refused to order with Shen Nian no matter what.
Shen Nian gave a simple “Oh” and held up two fingers to the waiter leaning slightly beside her. “Bring two portions, please. No lettuce or green onions.”
Hearing this, Ji Xicheng waved her hand hurriedly. “Hey, did I not say I was not eating?”
Shen Nian turned her head to look at her, appearing a bit puzzled. “I did not order for you. I ordered a portion for one person.”
Ji Xicheng was momentarily speechless, a breath of frustration caught in her chest, unable to go up or down.
Fine, fine, fine. Eat two by yourself; see if you do not burst.
To ease the embarrassment, Ji Xicheng chose to ignore her. After selecting a song, she picked up the microphone and began to sing.
The jianbing guozi Shen Nian ordered arrived quickly, steaming hot and fragrant, clearly freshly made. Shen Nian had not eaten much for dinner before coming out. She originally thought about having a midnight snack when she got back, but with these two crepes, she probably would not need it.
Ji Xicheng was initially singing with great devotion, but the aroma drifting from beside her kept sneaking into her nostrils, making it truly distracting. Just as she was debating whether to swallow her pride and ask for a piece to taste, she turned her head to see that Shen Nian had already swallowed the last bite.
“Ha.” Ji Xicheng angrily rolled her eyes and turned back with a glare.
Why did she suddenly glare at me for no reason? Shen Nian was confused, so she just arched an eyebrow and did not take it to heart.
Because of the jianbing guozi, the song Ji Xicheng had chosen was interrupted before it finished, and her final score was not very high. The more she thought about it, the hungrier she got. She simply stopped singing and scanned the QR code to order several snacks to be delivered to the room.
Thus, the next song was Shen Nian’s turn.
After picking up the microphone, Shen Nian appeared full of confidence, putting on a grand display as if she were about to showcase a magnificent voice. Ji Xicheng did not think much of it, merely giving a symbolic wave of her hand, prepared to exchange polite compliments afterward.
Unexpectedly, Shen Nian really was one who does not speak often, but when she does, she is terrifying. It made Ji Xicheng, who had intended to applaud, pull her hands back. She almost wanted to reach over and cover the other woman’s mouth.
Shen Nian was completely oblivious, singing the entire song while Ji Xicheng’s expression shifted from surprise to confusion and finally to numbness. Out of the basic self-restraint of an idol, Ji Xicheng forced herself not to interrupt. It was only after the other woman satisfiedly put down the microphone that Ji Xicheng could not help but complain, “I finally understand why you chose to be an actor instead of a singer.”
However, when she turned to look at the system score on the screen, even the last bit of composure on her face vanished. For heaven’s sake! Can someone tell her if this scoring system is broken? How could it give her a near-perfect score? Which single line was even on key?
Shen Nian’s eyes curved into crescents. She casually pressed her palm downward in a gesture of modesty and said, “Keep it low-key, keep it low-key.”
There was no need for Ji Xicheng to feel inferior. After all, among the Hundred Birds tribe, her “Phoenix Cry” was the most beautiful. Ji Xicheng could not offer any reaction other than rolling her eyes repeatedly.
Speechless. The person involved was eight hundred percent speechless.
Thinking that there were only two Alphas in the room and one of them had a lethal singing voice, Ji Xicheng realized that just howling like this was boring. She had a sudden idea and scanned the code again, ordering several accompaniment singers to come and join the fun. The name of the accompaniment group was even quite nice: “The Beautiful Women Team.”
After Ji Xicheng placed the order, she looked forward to some beautiful Omega sisters. She never expected that the people who finally walked in would be a sixty-year-old grandmother and three kind-looking aunts around fifty-six years old.
“?” Ji Xicheng was in disbelief. She hurriedly unlocked her phone to check her order history.
Beautiful Women Team?
While she was questioning her life, the grandmothers had already started introducing themselves quite gracefully. The oldest grandmother was clearly the leader of the group. “To make it easier for our ‘Boss Babes’ to remember, us sisters all named ourselves after letters. I am Sister A, this is Sister B, this is Sister C.”
Shen Nian could not help but “Wow” in her heart. This grandmother was so trendy! Not only was she wearing a beautiful tiered cake skirt, but she even called them “Boss Babes!”
Since the people were already there, the two of them were naturally too embarrassed to kick them out. They thought they should at least let them sing a couple of songs to show respect.
The result was the grandmother picking up the microphone and immediately increasing the difficulty. She chose a song where half of the lines required hitting high notes, leaving the two Alphas sitting on the sofa opposite staring in blank amazement. Once she snapped out of it, Shen Nian immediately began to applaud vigorously, her eyes filled with admiration.
Ji Xicheng was different; she was so startled she could hardly stay seated. Her mind was filled with one thought: Please, Grandma, Aunts, really, do not sing those high notes anymore! Thinking about how physical health varies among the elderly, she worried that if one of them suddenly felt unwell or had an accident, she and Shen Nian would be in big trouble tonight.
Ji Xicheng was fraught with worry, but reality proved she was overthinking it. After five or six minutes, Ji Xicheng finally understood the meaning of “Your grandma is still your grandma.”
Shen Nian was beautiful and had a very sweet way of speaking, so she was exceptionally likable in front of these elders. The grandmother was so delighted that she insisted on buying a round of drinks for her and her friend. The drinking that followed could not be stopped. In the end, it took both Shen Nian and Ji Xicheng using all their coaxing and pleading to finally see them back to rest.
Once the private room was restored to its two-Alpha state, Shen Nian could no longer hold it in. Clutching an empty wine bottle, she began to laugh until she was out of breath. Ji Xicheng, on the other hand, rubbed her forehead with a headache. For a moment, she even felt like “silencing” the Alpha in front of her to keep the secret.
After Shen Nian finished laughing, she casually set the bottle back on the table and checked the time on her phone. It was 9:30 PM; it was about time to go back.
After such a ridiculous blunder, Ji Xicheng was so embarrassed she wanted to dig a hole and hide. She could not wait for Shen Nian to leave. Just before they parted, she made a solemn agreement with the other woman.
“Hey, Shen Nian! About the accompaniment tonight, it stays between us. Remember, never mention it to anyone else!”
