- Chapter 11 - "A-Ning, You Do Not Have To..."
Li Yilin was unwilling to let his previous efforts go to waste or incur Yu Mengning’s resentment over such a trivial matter. To cover his tracks, he quickly forced a smile and explained, “No, no, Miss Yu, I am afraid you have misunderstood me.”
“I was actually looking at the little bird perched on this lady’s shoulder. It looks quite adorable.”
The bird in question immediately “spat” in her mind, feeling that being used as a shield by a person like him was incredibly bad luck.
Still looking at me? Your eyeballs are practically glued to that Omega, yet you have the nerve to say you are looking at me?!
You really have thick skin. You are just bullying me because no one can understand what I am saying!
Shen Nian stood on the side of Jiang Zhiwan’s shoulder, cursing up a storm. Simply swearing was not enough to vent her frustration; she even balled up her tiny claws to make threatening gestures.
Although Yu Mengning could not understand the “chirp, chirp, chirp” sounds, she was an expert at fanning the flames. “Oh my, what is wrong with the little bird? It is so angry that its feathers are falling out!”
“Chirp?” Out of sheer shock, Shen Nian actually let out a genuine bird-like chirp.
Was she losing feathers? Impossible, absolutely impossible!
While Shen Nian was busy questioning her life as a bird, Jiang Zhiwan reached out and gently stroked her twice.
“She is just teasing you. Your feathers are perfectly fine; not a single one has fallen out. Be quiet for a moment, okay?”
That slightly lowered, rhythmic tone successfully quieted Shen Nian down.
Seeing this, Yu Mengning could not help but remark, “My, this little bird you are raising really listens to you.”
Hearing that she was interested in the bird, Li Yilin seized the moment to join the conversation. “Does Miss Yu like raising birds? I happen to know a pet shop owner who specializes in…”
Before he could finish, he was interrupted by a waiter arriving with their food. “Please move aside, everyone. Be careful not to get burned by the hot pot.”
Li Yilin’s brow furrowed imperceptibly. Beneath the table, his fist tightened. However, he restrained his temper, his gaze merely lingering on the oblivious waiter’s face for a few seconds.
Yu Mengning had heard his previous words and guessed his intent. As she picked up the serving chopsticks to add ingredients to the pot, she said, “Like raising birds? It is just so-so for me.”
“I am a person who dislikes trouble. If I wanted a pet, I would have gotten one long ago. I would not wait for someone to give one to me.”
“So, Mr. Li, I appreciate the kind thought.”
When Yu Mengning truly began to eat, she was unwilling to continue talking. Li Yilin, who had investigated her habits beforehand, naturally knew this. But it was precisely this knowledge that caused a flicker of anxiety in his heart.
It should not be like this. In his original plan, the Omega should have developed a good impression of him by now, rather than being as lukewarm as she was currently.
Halfway through the hot pot meal, Jiang Zhiwan excused herself to go to the restroom. In reality, she was waiting for a set of investigative documents she had requested from a contact.
Yu Mengning was a friend-oriented person. Seeing Jiang Zhiwan head to the restroom, she insisted on following her, claiming she was afraid her friend might get lost in the restaurant. Jiang Zhiwan was long accustomed to this behavior.
The two had known each other since high school. Yu Mengning had always stuck by this friend who appeared cold but was actually warm-hearted. The eldest Miss Yu was uninterested in other Omegas who flattered her, yet she gave Jiang Zhiwan special treatment. Since back then, she had been exceptionally clingy, wanting to be by her friend’s side twenty-four hours a day.
While washing her hands in the restroom, Jiang Zhiwan looked through the glass mirror at her friend who was touching up her makeup. Watching her, she suddenly remembered the events of her past life.
In her past life, when Yu Mengning was forced by her family to go on a blind date, Jiang Zhiwan had been hospitalized after an allergic reaction triggered by Luo Shan’s deliberate targeting. Yu Mengning had asked her to come out then, but to avoid worrying her, Jiang Zhiwan had simply made a light excuse and declined the invitation.
She never expected that this single absence would lead to endless regret.
Just as he was tonight, Li Yilin was very good at disguising himself and knew exactly how to win Yu Mengning’s favor. He knew that as long as she did not reject him at the first meeting, his future pursuit would be halfway to success. Even if the effect on Yu Mengning was limited, her father was the key to his success.
Yu Mengning could not withstand her father’s persistent wishes. At that time, Li Yilin had despicably taken advantage of the situation, tricking her into a partnership to achieve his goals. By the time Jiang Zhiwan finally had free time, the news she received was that Yu Mengning was getting engaged. She was surprised, but Li Yilin played his part well, and their meeting was too brief for her to discover any clues in time.
It was only later, when she learned that the Yu family’s businesses had all changed hands, that Jiang Zhiwan sensed something was terribly wrong. By then, she could no longer contact Yu Mengning.
When she led her team into the Yu residence, Jiang Zhiwan witnessed the most infuriating scene of her life. Li Yilin was holding a belt, striking Yu Mengning over and over, while shouting, “Do you really think you are still that high-and-mighty Miss Yu? Wake up! The person truly in power in the Yu family now is me!”
Yu Mengning had been pampered since childhood; how could she have endured such suffering? Li Yilin was a damned hypocrite Alpha.
Several bodyguards received orders and immediately rushed forward to pin Li Yilin to the ground. Jiang Zhiwan carefully helped Yu Mengning up from beside the coffee table, inspecting her injuries with intense grief and anger.
“A-Ning, I am late. I did not know. I am taking you away!”
Even while pinned down by several men, Li Yilin did not forget to make threats. “Yu Mengning, Miss Yu, do not forget that your mother is still lying in the intensive care unit. If you dare to leave with this person today, are you planning to never care for her again? Or do you want her to end up like your father?”
As soon as he said this, Yu Mengning understood everything. The truth behind her father’s death was definitely connected to this beast. He was right; if she left with her friend today, she might be able to gather evidence to send him to prison later. But just doing that would be letting him off too easily.
Sensing Yu Mengning’s hesitation, Jiang Zhiwan panicked, feeling a bad premonition. “A-Ning, do not listen to him! I can help you solve everything! Come with me to the hospital first!”
But Yu Mengning only leaned close to her and whispered a instruction. “Wanwan, you are my best friend. Please take care of my mother for me.”
“A-Ning, you do not have to…”
Before Jiang Zhiwan could finish, Yu Mengning broke free from her hand. She forced out a small smile. “Wanwan, this is my family’s business. You do not have to, you do not have to get involved.”
Seeing Yu Mengning walk back toward that damned Alpha, Jiang Zhiwan frowned deeply. She wanted to say she could solve everything and would make that beast pay for his actions.
But before anyone could react, Yu Mengning grabbed the fruit knife from the coffee table and plunged it deep into Li Yilin’s heart.
“A-Ning.” Jiang Zhiwan opened her mouth to say something, but she suddenly found she had lost her voice.
