Perfect Possession - Episode 60
Jake listened to Steve’s report calmly. When Steve mentioned that the compensation for the confidential information leaked by J&D amounted to 20 billion, Jake slightly frowned.
“Less than I thought.”
“It’s only that much because you hid the core technology so well. If they had gotten away with everything, it would have been astronomical. Isn’t it a relief?”
Steve was curious as to why Jake frowned.
“If we only look at the amount, yes. But the board members on Chairman Han’s side, who turned a group like J&D into an enemy over something that could have been resolved quietly, will make a fuss.”
“That’s ridiculous. It could have been 200 billion, or even more, but you managed to end it at this level by dealing with it all at once. I won’t stand for it if they do.”
“The director of the headquarters? I should keep my mouth shut too, huh?”
Jake smiled wryly, looking at the agitated Steve.
“Honestly, if you had accepted Seo-yeon, I wouldn’t have gone this far. I don’t want to harm Do-young either. But now that I have a family, I understand why Grandpa said family should come first. The company runs smoothly when the employees are comfortable.”
Jake finished speaking lightly and checked the time. It was about time for Ty to wake up from his nap. He opened his phone habitually.
The industrial espionage by J&D and Jake’s marriage articles were still at the top of the search rankings. Fortunately, no pictures of Ty had been uploaded yet.
“Isn’t she a wonderful woman?”
“Pardon?”
Jake, who had put down his phone, said out of the blue, and Steve asked back.
“Just in case, I told her to keep the curtains closed today. But she asked if she could just go out and play, since her dad is a celebrity and she’ll get photographed eventually. What could I do? I told her to go ahead.”
“Wow, your wife is amazing. I would have hidden for months, not just a month, if I were her.”
When it was revealed that Steve was the illegitimate son of the second son of the Do-young Group, the media frenzy to cover the second son, who was so different from the late Chairman Han’s family-oriented image, was intense.
Steve, who was exposed to the cameras during that time, had a hard time. Knowing this well, Jake patted him on the shoulder and said.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t help you much back then.”
“Huh? Haha, what are you talking about? You were the only Do-young family member who called me even when you went to study abroad, Vice Chairman.”
Steve said sincerely to Jake, who was apologizing for something that happened a long time ago. As their conversation paused, a knock was heard, and Henry came in.
“I’m a little late.”
It had been an hour since he parted with Mi-ryung, but he was a little late returning to the company because he was investigating data to support her words.
Jake stared intently at Henry, whose face was dark, and asked lightly.
“What’s wrong?”
“I met the Madam an hour ago. The First Madam.”
Realizing that he might confuse Seo-yeon and Mi-ryung, Henry quickly added. Henry did not miss Jake’s eyes turning sharp.
“My mother told you to meet her alone?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Perhaps she was angry with you and found it difficult to step forward directly. But she must have thought it was urgent, so she told me to find out.”
“What is it that my aunt would instruct Director Jung to do?”
Steve asked instead of Jake.
Henry placed the prepared documents on the desk and explained.
“Chairman Han secretly contacted Hans, the team leader of Wingsder who participated in this project.”
“What kind of contact?”
Steve urged Henry again this time. Jake was staring at Henry expressionlessly.
“He contacted them to ask for their support in placing Director Park in charge instead of you, who is in charge of the project.”
“Is he crazy? What has Director Park even done? Wow, isn’t Chairman Han senile?”
Steve, who was agitated, couldn’t hold back his harsh words.
“What’s the justification?”
Jake asked Henry quietly.
“Unilateral abuse of power.”
Jake snorted, thinking, “I knew it.” He thought Chairman Han would plot something. But he didn’t expect him to push him out at this important time and put the greedy Director Park of Do-young Display in charge.
He recalled Chairman Han, who had visited him with Director Park sometime ago. Remembering the look in Director Park’s eyes at that time, Jake let out a hollow laugh.
He felt a sense of apology in his eyes, but Jake ignored it because he was too busy with Ty.
Perhaps Director Park already knew Chairman Han’s intentions. To remove Jake from his position, he needed to get the approval of the board members.
There were Chairman Han’s aides, but more than half of the board members followed the late Chairman Han and supported Jake.
Since Director Park was at the center of it, he could easily get the remaining votes of approval by winning him over.
“Well, if that’s what he wants to do, Do-young will have to bear the consequences.”
Jake paused for a moment, then said lightly as if there was nothing he could do. This situation could never be light, but Henry and Steve were worried about Jake, but also felt reliable when he answered so simply.
“What are you planning to do?”
Henry asked.
“Vice Chairman, you should meet Director Park.”
Steve thought that Director Park would know better than anyone that Director Park did not have the ability to complete the project, no matter how much he was his son.
“There’s no need for that. If that’s what my father wants, I should do it for him.”
“Then how…?”
Henry was afraid to hear the rest of the story. Jake was meticulous, planning everything up to Plan C, but now he hesitated to hear what that plan was.
Jake wanted to protect Do-young and make it the best more than anyone else. But he didn’t like his father’s way of doing things.
His goal was to make it a company that stood tall in the world, beyond Korea, in the way of his grandfather, the late Chairman Han. But if sacrifices were needed to do so, Jake was willing to pay the price.
“Henry, I need to meet Chairman Woo. Make an appointment as soon as possible.”
“Chairman Woo of Woo-jin Group?”
Steve asked with a surprised look. He was going to meet Chairman Woo of Woo-jin Group, not Director Park, in this situation, which was hard to understand. As Jake tried to return to his desk, Steve grabbed his arm in surprise.
The world said that the company comparable to Do-young was J&D, but they knew. Woo-jin was the company that would eventually catch up with Do-young.
They also possessed several core technologies that Do-young did not have, but above all, Chairman Woo of Woo-jin Group was a generous and conscientious businessman.
He was a rival of the late Chairman Han, but they recognized each other more than anyone else. To Chairman Han now, Chairman Woo was a man not even worth dealing with.
After that, their relationship gradually deteriorated, and they only greeted each other at social gatherings. But Jake had been rebuilding his friendship with Chairman Woo for several years and maintaining it well.
“I can’t just sit back and take it.”
Jake smiled as if it was nothing and dismissed Steve and Henry’s worried gazes. The two were relieved by Jake’s calm appearance, but they did not let go of their tension.
At that moment, the intercom rang. Henry hurriedly went to the desk and answered the intercom.
“What’s going on?”
-Director Park has arrived.
Henry and Steve looked at Jake at the same time.
“Red light, green light, one, two, three!”
Sarah said slowly, pausing between each word, and turned around. Ty tilted his head to look at Sarah and closed his eyes tightly a beat late.
Playing “Red light, green light” with a 17-month-old was difficult. First of all, he couldn’t stay still, and he didn’t understand all the rules of the game, so he would run over and hug her.
So, the new rule was that he had to close his eyes when Sarah turned around. He found it so fun that he kept asking to play “Red light, green light” instead of playing ball, saying “Wed ight, gween ight.”
He only closed his eyes while Sarah counted to three, but he always opened his eyes before she counted to three, smiled, and ran over to hug her.
“Mommy?”
Ty, who had opened his eyes wide, ran over and hugged Sarah’s legs, smiling brightly.
“We’re doing it until Mommy catches you.”
“Heehee, Mommy?”
“Why?”
“Daddy?”
“Daddy went to work.”
“No. Ty wed ight, gween ight.”
Sarah smiled and picked up Ty.
“You want to play ‘Red light, green light’ with Daddy?”
“Wed ight.”
She felt like she was dreaming every time Ty learned a new word and followed along. Ty, who shortened long sentences in his own way, was so lovely that she wanted to put him in her eyes.
“Then let’s do ‘Red light, green light’ again when Daddy comes home, and we’ll go out and take a stroller around the garden, okay?”
“Stwowwow, Ty tata.”
“Yes, yes, I understand. Mr. Han Ty.”
When Ms. Kim brought the stroller, Sarah put Ty in it and strolled around the garden. She couldn’t even take a step before she was bombarded with Ty’s “What’s that?” questions, but she answered them carefully without showing any displeasure.
But she was all concerned about the left side of Jake’s cheek. She didn’t know it well yesterday, but when she saw it in the morning, there was redness on his left cheek.
If she hadn’t scratched or hit him, he must have been hurt somewhere, but no matter how she looked at it, she couldn’t think of a situation where only that spot would have been hit and turned red.
“Could it be… no way…”
Chairman Han came to her mind for a moment, but Sarah shook her head. No matter how fiery his temper was, she couldn’t imagine him hitting his grown son, especially Jake.
“Mommy? Wha dat?”
Ty looked at Sarah and shook his head hard, following her. He must have been watching her and was curious as to why Mommy was shaking her head.
“Huh…? Oh, I was doing head exercises. Follow me, left and right head exercises!”
Sarah sang and showed him how to shake her head. Then, finding it fun, Ty followed her and shook his head. Sarah was able to forget about Jake’s left cheek for a while thanks to her son’s antics.
