- Chapter 83 - The Production Team Went Crazy
In the end, An He and Boss Qi still ended up holding the green train tickets and boarded the legendary green train.
It really was the new air-conditioned hard seat. The production team hadn’t given their investors even a shred of face—no secret upgrades to sleeper cars or anything.
The moment she stepped onto the green train, An He couldn’t help but ask the woman standing beside her, “Did you seriously never offend anyone on this production team?”
Qi Yu: “……”
She paused, then said flatly, “No.”
An He’s expression was pure misery. She tilted her head slightly, trying not to let the tears in her eyes fall. “Honestly, I really want to marry Shi Nanbei right now.”
Qi Yu: “……”
An He continued, “We’re both rookies. So why does Zhao Xunyin get to fly with her wife, while I can only take a green train with you?”
Qi Yu: “……”
An He turned to her. “Why aren’t you saying anything?”
Boss Qi’s expression was heavy. She muttered, “I’m reflecting.”
An He raised a brow. “?”
Boss Qi grit her teeth and said, “I’ll try harder next mission.”
An He finally brightened up. All afternoon, she had been indirectly fishing for this promise. In her mind, someone like Qi Yu—a born prodigy—was capable of anything she set her mind to. If An He didn’t take first place this time, it was obviously because Boss Qi hadn’t tried hard enough.
Boss Qi: What a load of blame.
Now that Boss Qi had promised to try harder next time, An He was confident they could surpass Zhao Xunyin and snatch first place. Just thinking about it made her incredibly happy.
Hmm, maybe she should start preparing her victory speech in advance?
But her speech never got used.
The second mission turned out to be even more insane.
“Win praise points from ten aunties?” When An He received the mission card, her cheerful expression finally crumbled.
She had just endured over six hours on a green train, leaving her back sore, legs cramping. If it wasn’t for the cameras filming, she probably would have flopped dramatically into Boss Qi’s arms by now.
At this point, she had to give credit where it was due—she truly admired Boss Qi. Even after so many years of marriage and dating, her self-control was astonishing.
Whether it was due to her privileged upbringing or excellent education, Qi Yu was always perfectly composed (except in bed, of course). Even on a green train, she sat upright, handling work on her notebook.
Hours of sitting didn’t even make her frown. When they reached their destination, she stood up and walked with grace that left An He gaping.
Really? Is this necessary, sister?
Finally arriving at the designated meeting point after the grueling train ride, An He could hardly be called anything but exhausted. Thankfully, the production team was somewhat considerate and gave them the night to rest.
That evening marked the first time An He went out without fussing at Boss Qi to drive her somewhere. She was utterly drained. Since marrying Boss Qi, she had never endured this level of hardship.
After a night’s rest, the variety show resumed the next day. As before, the host handed out mission cards to the four couples.
Before anyone could speak, An He immediately erupted: “Win praise points from ten aunties?”
Her beautiful face scrunched up in disbelief—not that she was losing control, but because the production team had truly gone insane.
First there were the kids, now the aunties. An He felt like dying.
She asked, “Can the production team give us a normal mission for once?”
The host, well aware of An He’s lingering resentment from the first day—when she and Qi Yu were sent to an empty, desolate park—quickly said, “Don’t worry, An-jie. This time, the mission is done in reverse.”
“In reverse?” An He blinked. “What do you mean?”
Host: “The ranking from the last mission is reversed. You get to choose your mission location first this time.”
An He frowned. “The production team is really that kind?”
Post-production: Of course not!
Seeing An He’s suspicious gaze, the host muttered doubts in his head, but his professional ethics as a host prevailed. He continued to coax her: “Really, An-jie. No tricks. You choose first—whether it’s the market, the teahouse, the studio, or the school.”
An He glanced at him, then at Zhao Xunyin and Shi Nanbei standing beside her. After a moment, she realized: “Oh—I get it. You’re afraid that if the little naive one chooses first, she’ll somehow hack the system and make your production team look bad.”
The host was caught off guard: “……”
Post-production: Cut this part for now!
Shi Nanbei didn’t understand. “Hack the system?”
An He adored Shi Nanbei’s innocent, clueless expression. Unable to contain her maternal instinct, she reached out and rubbed Shi Nanbei’s cheek. “I’m praising you, kid.”
“Really?”
“Really.”
Shi Nanbei immediately beamed and turned to her wife for credit: “Xunyin, Xunyin, they’re praising me!”
Zhao Xunying: “……”
“Shut up.”
Seeing Zhao Xunyin’s face—caught between wanting to speak and holding back—instantly made all the fatigue and hardship of An He’s journey vanish like smoke.
Nothing gave her more joy than watching her longtime friend suffer a little, that helpless expression of wanting to say something but not being able to—it was pure happiness for her.
So An He decisively chose to side with the production team, unapologetically selecting the location for their mission.
This time, though, she had an extra bit of foresight. Before choosing, she asked the host: “By ‘aunties,’ do you mean women over forty?”
The host nodded. “Yes.”
An He smiled warmly. “Then among these four locations, which one has the most older ladies?”
The host was about to say it was confidential, but Shi Nanbei, that little rascal, jumped in immediately, showing off: “Of course it’s the market!”
An He turned to Shi Nanbei. “Oh? You knew that too? You’re not only beautiful but smart as well. Can you tell your sister why?”
Upon hearing praise, Shi Nanbei’s face lit up with pride, like a cat at home expecting to be petted, tilting her head as if to say, please give me some love.
She didn’t see herself as competing with An He at all. So when asked, she answered honestly: “Because older ladies all have to buy ingredients and cook. It’s morning, so they all go out to get their groceries.”
Fair enough.
An He clapped her hands together. “Then the market it is!”
She leaned over and blew Shi Nanbei a playful kiss. “Thanks, cutie.”
Shi Nanbei’s cheeks flushed bright red, a hint of shyness creeping in.
Zhao Xunyin: “……”
She was beginning to feel that half her head was already green with envy.
As if on cue, Shi Nanbei now demanded recognition, looking at Zhao Xunyin: “I’m awesome, right?”
Zhao Xunyin stared at An He’s smug, triumphant expression, forced a cold face, and finally spat out one word through clenched teeth: “Impressive.”
Shi Nanbei immediately glowed with satisfaction.
After An He made her choice, the Marquise couple picked their location: the school. Their reasoning was simple—on a weekday morning, older ladies and gentlemen would likely be sending their grandchildren off to school, so there’d be plenty of older ladies around.
Except it was summer vacation.
Professor Ji chose the studio, thinking that during summer, many parents might go for family portraits, so he’d also encounter plenty of older ladies.
That left only the teahouse.
Shi Nanbei frowned. “Why isn’t anyone choosing the teahouse?”
Zhao Xunyin replied, “Because in the south, it’s mostly older gentlemen who like going to teahouses early in the morning to drink tea and play cards.”
Shi Nanbei looked puzzled. “But aren’t those gentlemen’s wives older ladies?”
Zhao Xunyin: “……”
Looking at her wife’s innocent face, she realized something. With Shi Nanbei’s sweet looks, all those older gentlemen would surely go home and fetch their wives just to bump up the numbers for her.
Relieved, Zhao Xunyin finally understood the joy of coasting to victory in a game.
Thank heavens for blessing her with such a lovable wife.
But this time, the production team had gotten clever.
After hearing Shi Nanbei’s reasoning, the host’s face bloomed with a mischievous smile. “Cutie, the rule this time is that your mission targets must be in the teahouse—you can’t bring in reinforcements from outside.”
“And in the teahouse, you’ll be playing the role of waitstaff.”
Shi Nanbei’s eyes widened. “Waitstaff???”
An He burst into laughter beside her. “Hahahahaha!”
Although the host was speaking to Shi Nanbei, An He’s eyes immediately landed on Zhao Xunyin. She laughed boldly and shamelessly—her bright beauty made her even more striking when she grinned like that.
Pointing at Zhao Xunyin’s face, she gasped for air between laughs. “Look at you, Zhao Xunyin! Today’s your turn, hahahaha! Waitress, hahahaha!”
She gave the host a thumbs-up. “Well done.”
The host smiled faintly. “You and Ms. Qi will be waitstaff at the roast chicken shop.”
An He’s laughter froze mid-air, like a record skipping. “??????”
Her face screamed, What are you even saying? “Roast chicken waitstaff???!!!”
What kind of joke was this? They were making such a stunning, glamorous young woman work as a roast chicken shop server?
Was the production team crazy, or was she?
“Exactly.” The host then pulled two bright red aprons from behind him, each emblazoned with the “Roast Chicken Xishi” logo—and even a cartoon chicken with exaggerated muscles.
In that instant, An He could only think: I’m doomed.
Qi’s expression was equally grim. “……”
Meanwhile, Zhao Xunyin finally laughed—from the heart, feeling life had never been so absurdly dramatic. “Hahahahaha!”
Qi glanced at her. Zhao Xunyin froze mid-laugh. “……”
Damn.
