- Chapter 60 - You Should Make Your Debut!
Boss Qi’s reaction was, as always, calm and indifferent.
The one who seemed genuinely excited, surprisingly, was An He, calling all the way from their suburban estate to tell Zhao Xunyin the good news — Qi Yu had already scheduled the recording for August. That way, they could finish before the little one had to return to school.
It all sounded remarkably thoughtful.
Zhao Xunyin, however, was stunned.
“So soon? Everything’s already arranged? Boss Qi really cares that much about Nanbei?”
Who would’ve thought her aloof boss was actually so considerate toward her employees’ families? Then why was she pretending to be all cold and detached when they’d talked about it earlier? Was that just for show?
To this, Boss Qi’s wife replied flatly over the phone:
“Cares about your kid? Please. She’s not doing it for your little wife — she’s doing it for herself. You know how she is; she can’t stand to leave anything in someone else’s hands. So, she simply bought out the variety show we were supposed to be on together and invited the original producer and director to join. Otherwise, you think it would’ve been scheduled so quickly?”
Zhao Xunyin: “…”
Alright then. When you’re rich, you really can do whatever you want.
As always, An He’s call turned into a long venting session about her marriage. Since getting married, complaining about her wife had become her second-favorite hobby — right after spending money.
“I’m seriously starting to think I married a robot. After all these years, the only time she ever took me abroad was when she needed to sign a contract during her vacation. Not once did she say, ‘Let’s go on a trip just for fun.’
“And this time when she told me she wanted to take me out, I actually thought she’d finally gotten tired of my youthful beauty and was about to kick me out of the house. But no — turns out she meant she wanted to take me to film a variety show together!”
An He let out a long, weary sigh.
“Honestly, what kind of spell did I cast on her? Why can’t she ever leave me alone?”
Zhao Xunyin: “…”
Last time you told me Boss Qi gave you ten billion yuan, you sure didn’t sound this miserable.
And sure enough, An He brought that up again.
“You’re smarter than me — found yourself a young and pretty one. Meanwhile, I went and married an old bureaucrat. Sure, she’s good in bed and great at making money, but what’s the point of that? She’s getting older, no denying it.
“She was talking about having a baby recently, so we tried once. I figured since she looked so calm and confident all the time, maybe the hospital would guarantee success or something. But guess what — it didn’t work! Honestly, I think it’s because she’s just too old.”
Zhao Xunyin couldn’t hold back anymore.
“Sis, you’re in your mid-thirties yourself, okay? You’re not exactly a spring chicken either!”
An He: “…”
Alright. Fair point.
Then she snapped back indignantly,
“Don’t act like you’re not in your thirties too!”
Zhao Xunyin: “…”
Fair enough — they were all in their thirties. No point pretending to be young anymore.
An He then asked brightly,
“By the way, are you and your wife planning to have a kid? If so, want me to refer you to my hospital? Qi Yu has shares there — I can get you an 88% discount!”
If there was one thing An He had picked up from being married to Qi Yu, it was the obsession with making money. The two of them were perfectly matched — both completely fallen into the money pit.
Zhao Xunyin rubbed her forehead.
“Let’s talk about that later. We’ve only been married for, what, two or three months? Isn’t it a bit early to be discussing kids?”
An He exaggerated a groan.
“You have to plan these things early! Look at me — I was so confused when I married that damned Qi Yu, and now the only thing she ever gives me is money! What kind of love is that supposed to be?”
Zhao Xunyin: “…”
Please. You just wanted to show off the money part, didn’t you?
So, with the righteous fury of someone who despised capitalism, Zhao Xunyin hung up without another word.
An He stared at her phone, stunned.
Her best friend actually hung up on her — for Qi Yu, of all people?
Heh.
The public appearance of Zhao Xunyin’s wife, Shi Nanbei, came as a total shock — just as sudden as when Zhao herself had dropped that infamous marriage announcement on Weibo out of nowhere.
Ever since that day, Zhao’s “wife fans” had been inconsolable, crying out in the comments section daily, demanding to know which woman had bewitched their beloved idol.
“You promised to make all women happy! Missing one still means you broke your promise, Zhao Xunyin! Why did you get married?”
“Who’s the woman who stole our Yinyin’s heart?”
“If I ever find out who took my wife from me, I swear she won’t live to see another sunrise!”
Their despair was, in a way, understandable. After all, their long-time number-one “girlfriend material” in the sapphic celebrity world had suddenly gotten married — and a flash marriage at that — without the slightest warning. Of course they couldn’t accept it overnight.
Which is exactly why, when a gossip paparazzo went live on Weibo that day, claiming to reveal the true face of Zhao Xunyin’s wife, nearly every one of Zhao’s fans flooded into the livestream. Even those who didn’t catch it live went straight to the replay afterward.
And once they saw it, their thoughts were surprisingly unanimous:
Of all the possibilities in the world — no one expected Zhao Xunyin’s wife to be such an adorable little sweetheart!
The first ones to “jump ship” were Zhao Xunyin’s own fans. They cried and screamed in her Weibo comments, demanding to know where she had found such an adorable wife—she was just too cute!
Then, after watching Zhao Xunyin’s new talk show and finding out that the two had actually met through a blind date, the fans completely lost it:
“Why is it that when my family sets me up on blind dates, I never meet anyone as cute as Zhao Xunyin’s wife?”
Her fans still tried to be tactful about it, mindful of how their idol might feel. But passersby had no such restraint—they went straight to Zhao Xunyin’s Weibo and, in a massive joint effort, began a campaign begging for Shi Nanbei to make her debut.
“I’ve never seen a girl this adorably silly before. She’s too cute 😭 Please, Zhao Xunyin, let your wife debut! If she does, I swear I’ll be her number-one fan!”
“Excuse me, the person above—watch your words. I’m her number-one fan, okay?”
“Now I finally understand why Zhao Xunyin rushed into marriage 🤦♀️ Her wife’s face is pure ‘first love’ material—a total heartbreaker for both straight guys and straight girls. Anyone who sees her would bend instantly.”
“I get it, I really do. I just want to know where I can find such an adorable wife for myself?”
“The Zhao Xunyin’s Wife Fan Support Group has officially been established. Click my profile to join the group!”
“Hahahahahaha! I can’t take it anymore—Zhao Xunyin’s fans have all defected!”
“You people switch sides too fast! You meet her once and immediately call yourselves her fans—have a little self-control, please 🐶 Unlike me, who only said I was a fan after watching her livestream three times.”
“I heard from someone at her school that Zhao Xunyin’s wife is only a junior in college this year? A junior! So, she’s what, twenty-one or twenty-two? 😭 Why did she have to marry so young?”
“Not sure if you guys watched today’s interview 🤦♀️ The host asked Zhao Xunyin what her most unforgettable memory after marriage was. Zhao said it was when her wife played ‘Renai Circulation’ for her on a suona!”
“HAHAHAHAHA what a legendary woman!”
“Sorry, but I just can’t picture that face—so pure and sweet 😭—while she’s playing ‘Renai Circulation’ on a suona.”
“😂 I need to see her on a variety show! Please let her debut!”
“Debut! Debut!”
“AAAAHHH I hereby declare myself the supreme leader of her wife’s fan club!”
When Zhao Xunyin scrolled through her Weibo comments that day, she instantly regretted it. Her entire comment section was flooded—with her wife’s new fans.
Zhao Xunyin: “…”
It was bad enough that they were all switching fandoms—but did they really have to announce it under her own post?
Were these even human beings? Who did this kind of thing?
Her mood instantly plummeted, while her manager, oblivious, was still chattering beside her about Shi Nanbei’s popularity:
“This is phenomenal! Your wife’s got the makings of a next-generation idol. With her looks, she could easily debut as a top-tier star. Listen, if she’s willing, I can talk to Boss Qi right away—we could easily push her into the spotlight!”
Zhao Xunyin: “…”
She turned to glare at her coldly. “What’s that supposed to mean? You’ve already made one Best Actress—you still want to ‘make’ someone else now? Is your loyalty really that cheap?”
Manager: “…”
Why did that sound weirdly jealous?
“I just meant,” the manager began to explain, but Zhao Xunyin cut her off.
“Have you found out which tabloid exposed Shi Nanbei today?”
The manager glanced at her face, silently cursing the paparazzi who had caused all this trouble. Of all people to provoke, they just had to pick Zhao Xunyin.
She had mellowed a bit since getting married—no more fighting with the world—but deep down, she was still the same “Zhao the Firebrand.” Had those reporters forgotten the time she smashed a camera on set? And now that they’d set their sights on her wife, she’d never let it go.
“We found out—it’s a small tabloid, probably trying to boost their numbers before mid-year,” the manager reported.
“Is that so?” Zhao Xunyin’s voice was flat. “Send a lawyer’s letter. Sue them.”
“But your assistant said your wife didn’t want to pursue it,” the manager said, confused. “Your wife really has a good temper.”
Zhao Xunyin gave a cold laugh. As an artist, she had nothing but contempt for the paparazzi’s lowly tactics in chasing a story.
“She can choose not to pursue it,” she said icily, “but I never said her wife wouldn’t.”
Manager: “…”
Yeah. Note to self: never mess with the queen of wife-protectors.
