- Chapter 113 (THE END) - Hospital Beauty, Dr. Shi
Zhao Xunyin was genuinely childish. The older she got, the more childish she became. Sometimes, her immaturity was so extreme that not even her wife—or even her longtime best friend who had literally shared pants with her—could tolerate it.
“I’ll say it again. You’re older, you’re an award-winning actress. Don’t you think all this is childish?” An He said, glancing sideways from the car seat at the woman in the passenger seat: sunglasses and mask on, holding a bouquet of flowers.
To keep in touch with her best friend—and secretly to help her daughter get married off sooner—An He had persuaded Boss Qi to move their entire family to Chengdu, just so they could be neighbors with Zhao Xunyin.
They had just settled in, barely had time to get comfortable, when Zhao Xunyin dragged herself straight to the hospital to confront Shi Nanbei.
An He scolded patiently: “I’ve told you over and over. You’re not a kid anymore. Love and romance aren’t the only things in life. Marriage is about two people living together. Who knows if it will even last? Look at you—you’re almost forty. Your wife is twenty-seven or twenty-eight, the perfect age. Successful career, beautiful appearance, everything’s great except for that daughter of yours.”
She didn’t mince words. “With your wife’s looks, she’s a heartbreaker for men and a deal-breaker for women. And she’s only gotten a few confessions? And you—you’re standing there holding a bouquet, planning to confess to her at the hospital?”
Zhao Xunyin scoffed. “How is my daughter a burden? Don’t forget, you were hoping that burden would one day be your daughter-in-law.”
An He went silent.
Thinking about it, An He worried a little. Her daughter, Qi Yu, looked just like Boss Qi—born with a scowl on her face, unimpressed with everyone, even when surrounded by people who adored her. She had been like this even when she was betrothed as a child: always impatient, even with little sweethearts.
Honestly, she worried her daughter might turn out asexual.
It was stressful.
Zhao Xunyin continued: “Besides, I’m just exercising my rights openly. If I don’t show up, my wife might end up someone else’s.”
It wasn’t a lack of self-confidence. Shi Nanbei was just too damn charming.
At first, it was classmates or coworkers with impure thoughts. Then even patients at the hospital started paying her wife extra attention.
Shi Nanbei was a neurologist, yet somehow patients came for every excuse under the sun, just to see her. Flowers, perfumes, bags, gifts—so many that Zhao Xunyin had to grit her teeth to keep from snapping.
On top of that, the paparazzi endlessly speculated that their marriage was on the rocks, fanning flames for anyone remotely interested. Zhao Xunyin was furious.
So, naturally, she came to the hospital with a huge bouquet to confront Shi Nanbei herself.
An He looked at her with utter disdain. “For those people, no matter how many flowers you bring, they’ll still try to woo your wife.”
Zhao Xunyin: “….”
When, besides scolding me, has your mouth ever been this useful?
She knew it was childish, but the thought of other people always noticing her wife made her forget all sense of restraint.
Since her best friend didn’t respect her, Zhao Xunyin didn’t bother explaining. One must live true to oneself.
She swung open the car door, striding forward with long legs, clutching the huge bouquet of roses as she stormed toward Shi Nanbei’s clinic.
Growing up, Zhao Xunyin had never displayed her affection so boldly. She had imagined several scenarios: Shi Nanbei shedding tears of gratitude upon seeing her, those who were always watching her wife blushing in shame, or fans surrounding them, cheering, “#LongLiveNanxinParty!”
But she never imagined she wouldn’t even make it inside the building.
“So, the security guards stopped you?” An He asked, laughing as she leaned against her waist for support. “Hahahahaha! Zhao Xunyin, Zhao Xunyin, even you have a day like this! Look at you—black pants, black shirt, black coat, sunglasses, mask, and a baseball cap. Of course, the security thought you were some gang member! And you’re carrying that enormous bouquet, all high-profile and conspicuous. Who else would they stop if not you?”
Zhao Xunyin’s face twisted in disbelief: “….”
She hadn’t expected the hospital to have such strict security. Without a word, they just turned her away.
Standing three meters away were two burly guards, expressions cold and rigid.
“Who are you here to see?” one asked.
“Dr. Shi Nanbei,” Zhao Xunyin replied.
“Obviously,” the guard sighed. “Sister, give up. Dr. Shi is the hospital’s beauty—everyone here fancies her. No outsider has a chance. Go home.”
Zhao Xunyin: “….”
Did you just repeat that?
An He laughed until she was nearly crying. “Hahahahahaha! Did you hear that? He called you ‘Sister’! Hahahaha! I’ve told you so many times—you’re not the young person you used to be! Why don’t you listen? See, facts speak louder than words, right?”
Zhao Xunyin: “….”
“Can you just shut your mouth for once?”
Zhao Xunyin stared silently at the two burly security guards for a long moment before saying, “Shi Nanbei is my wife.”
The guards scoffed. “It’s not even dark yet. Daydreaming already? You think I don’t want Dr. Shi to be my wife?”
Zhao Xunyin froze. Shi Nanbei had never told her she was this popular at the hospital.
Regret washed over her. She seriously regretted agreeing to let Shi Nanbei work at this hospital instead of firmly insisting she go to Boss Qi’s private clinic.
What kind of hospital is this? For treating patients or for stealing other people’s wives?
“I’m Zhao Xunyin,” she said helplessly, finally lifting her sunglasses and mask to introduce herself to the guards.
Although she was forty, her appearance could easily pass for someone in her early thirties, and her aura was undeniably extraordinary.
The guards had never seen such a beautiful woman before. They couldn’t help but glance at her a couple of extra times—but that was it. Still, they recognized a faint familiarity.
“Zhao Xunyin? Never heard of her. Miss, you should just head back. This hospital treats people, it doesn’t cater to fans. Within a twenty-kilometer radius, everyone knows there’s a gorgeous doctor here. There are tons of people chasing her every day, claiming to be her brother, sister, cousin, you name it. Dr. Shi only has thirty appointment slots a day, and people book them a month in advance just to catch a glimpse of her. And you, can’t even manage a basic appointment? Can’t even cough up thirty bucks for a registration fee?”
Zhao Xunyin was speechless.
So, how washed-up am I that you don’t even recognize me?
An He was practically dying of laughter beside her. “Hahahahahahaha!”
Zhao Xunyin: “….”
She was wrong. She really was. She shouldn’t have relied on her best friend—sometimes, female friendships just can’t sustain themselves indefinitely.
In the end, Zhao Xunyin had no choice but to call Shi Nanbei to come downstairs and pick her up. Shi Nanbei, still slightly confused when she answered, asked, “Why are you at the hospital?”
Zhao Xunyin: “….”
Why the hell am I here at the hospital?
Shi Nanbei came down during a free moment, wearing her white coat. Her figure was slender and striking, especially her long, straight legs—perfectly proportioned. Everything looked good on her. Her black hair fell to her waist, her features were sharp and captivating.
“Why didn’t you give me a heads-up before suddenly showing up?” Shi Nanbei’s bluntness had been familiar to Zhao Xunyin ever since their marriage. Sure, she occasionally said sweet things after awakening to love, but most of the time, her words could still infuriate people.
For instance, right now—Zhao Xunyin was standing below with a bouquet in hand. Why did she come?
Obviously, to see her wife!
And yet Shi Nanbei had the audacity to ask why she hadn’t given notice. Isn’t that obvious? If she had, Zhao Xunyin would’ve known just how insanely popular Shi Nanbei had become at the hospital.
Unbelievable—everyone within twenty kilometers knew there was a beautiful doctor here. Way to go, Shi Nanbei.
Zhao Xunyin’s envy was palpable. She put on a cold expression and shoved the massive bouquet of roses into Shi Nanbei’s arms.
Shi Nanbei blinked. “?”
What was this supposed to mean?
“Picked it up from the trash,” Zhao Xunyin said icily.
Shi Nanbei: “….”
An He was laughing so hard she nearly broke in two. But seeing as Zhao Xunyin’s best friend had already gotten involved, she decided to explain the situation to Shi Nanbei before Zhao Xunyin held a grudge for years.
“So that’s what happened. These two security guys were refusing to let her up,” An He explained, patting Shi Nanbei’s shoulder. “Wow, I really didn’t expect this—you’re that popular?”
Shi Nanbei understood immediately: her wife was jealous.
She turned to the guards and said firmly, “She really is my wife.”
Zhao Xunyin, with a frosty face: “I’m not your wife.”
The guards glanced between their goddess, Dr. Shi, and the imposing figure next to her, hesitating. “She really is Dr. Shi’s wife?”
Zhao Xunyin: “Nope.”
Shi Nanbei wasn’t fazed. Seeing the guards didn’t believe her, she started reaching into her pocket, saying, “Yes, really my wife.”
She pulled out a bright red and gold marriage certificate, a little worn with age. Opening it in front of the guards, she said, “See? We’re officially married.”
The guards were stunned by Shi Nanbei’s move. They looked at the youthful, slightly innocent photo on the certificate next to the formidable woman standing beside her. “Okay, but maybe this was a bit much?”
Zhao Xunyin hadn’t expected Shi Nanbei to bring the marriage certificate and blurted out, “Why did you bring the marriage certificate?”
To ward off any romantic challengers, apparently!
Shi Nanbei tilted her head, slightly puzzled. “Isn’t it important to always carry your essential documents with you?”
Zhao Xunyin: “….”
