Pats Little Shrike's Tail - Chapter 14
Chapter 14
Shen Qingyi originally thought the little chubby bird would be upset for a little while and that two mealworms would be enough to coax it. However, she found out that this little creature had a serious temper. It hadn’t spoken to her for a whole day since she looked at its butt.
Faced with the sulking little finch, Shen Qingyi didn’t dare to provoke it.
It was so tiny. What if it got too angry and something bad happened?
Shen Qingyi had originally planned to take the little chubby bird out to cheer it up, thinking she couldn’t keep it cooped up on the balcony forever. But it backfired, and the little thing was even angrier.
On her way home from work, Shen Qingyi made a detour to a pet market. She bought some of the little chubby bird’s favorite foods, some nutritional supplements, and some extra bird feed before heading home.
Shan Ling was still upset. Being stared at from behind without warning, she wouldn’t be happy no matter what. No matter what Shen Qingyi said to her, she ignored her, curling up into a little white ball and pretending not to understand human language.
However, when Shen Qingyi opened the door and entered the password, Shan Ling still looked up.
The six-digit password seemed to have no pattern. After watching, Shan Ling closed her eyes again, maintaining her angry little demeanor.
At dinner, Shen Qingyi added some more grains to the hot water. Shan Ling ate and drank as usual, but she still wouldn’t let Shen Qingyi touch her. Shen Qingyi recalled the little bird’s struggling appearance when she checked its butt and couldn’t help but wonder if a bird would really mind someone looking at its little butt.
As it turned out, a normal bird might not mind, but Shan Ling minded a great deal.
So after dinner, she nestled in her newly decorated nest, ignoring Shen Qingyi. She even slept in her cage until morning, a first since she had arrived.
After a full day of light rain, the weather was still gloomy on the second day.
Shan Ling woke up in her nest and couldn’t help but sneeze. Fortunately, Shen Qingyi had put a thick towel down for her, otherwise, she would have caught a cold after sleeping there all night.
A strange wind was blowing outside the window. Shan Ling looked at the trees that were still lush a few days ago, now starting to wither overnight. The cars parked under the trees in the community were also affected, covered with a thick layer of fallen leaves.
Shan Ling stared at the scene in a daze. She wondered if her rented basement had any leaks. She had been missing for almost half a month, and she hoped the landlord wouldn’t come looking for trouble.
Lost in thought, Shan Ling didn’t notice someone approaching from behind.
Shen Qingyi stood in front of the sliding door to the balcony, looking at the little chubby bird lost in thought as it stared out the window. She began to wonder if taking it out yesterday had made the little chubby bird homesick.
Shen Qingyi could understand. After all, she had found this little chubby bird. She had originally planned to let it go after it recovered, but it had become so clingy that Shen Qingyi had forgotten it was a free creature.
Shen Qingyi stared at Shan Ling’s chubby back for a long time.
“Time to eat.”
Shan Ling turned her head and saw Shen Qingyi open the cage door. She grunted and turned her head back to look out the window. She still wouldn’t respond when Shen Qingyi spoke to her, acting as if she were just a bird and couldn’t possibly understand human language.
Shen Qingyi stroked the little bird’s back and said a few words. When she found that the little chubby bird still wouldn’t talk to her, she let out a long sigh.
“I’m going out now,” Shen Qingyi said, stroking Shan Ling’s feathers. “It’s cold today, so I won’t let you out. Just rest well in your cage.”
Shen Qingyi, feeling a bit wronged by the lack of response, took one last deep look at Shan Ling, then closed the cage and left for work.
Shan Ling heard the door close and turned her head slightly to look. She then ruffled her feathers, lifted her little butt, and continued to stare at the gloomy weather outside.
From her angle, she could see the entrance to the garage. Shan Ling remembered what Shen Qingyi’s car looked like, and she watched as Shen Qingyi drove out of the garage and disappeared in the blink of an eye.
Hmph.
Shan Ling stood up in a huff. After undoing the cage latch, she flew to the bedroom, transformed into her human form, and put on a pair of Shen Qingyi’s pajamas.
Looking at the messy wardrobe, Shan Ling put her hands on her hips, looking unhappy.
Why should I have to clean up this woman’s room after she looked at my butt?
Shan Ling turned her head, pretending not to see it, but then she remembered that if she didn’t help clean up, that stupid human would definitely let it go.
“How unfair,” Shan Ling thought resentfully as she folded Shen Qingyi’s clothes. “Are all humans like this?”
Although Shan Ling was reluctant, she still tidied up the room. The vegetables in the refrigerator were gone. All that was left were two stubborn potatoes and a head of garlic.
“I can’t just make stir-fried shredded potatoes for dinner, can I?” Shan Ling stood in front of the fridge, stroking her chin thoughtfully. “How am I supposed to make it without any green onions?”
As the saying goes, even the cleverest housewife can’t cook a meal without rice. She couldn’t just make shredded potatoes with only potatoes.
Shan Ling thought about it for a bit. She remembered Shen Qingyi saying that there was a wallet under the TV cabinet with money inside. She also remembered the electronic lock’s password. And there was a supermarket nearby.
How convenient!
Shan Ling turned on the robot vacuum cleaner, following the instructions to make it clean the apartment first. Then, she went to the bedroom and changed into some of Shen Qingyi’s clothes—a white shirt and a gray long skirt.
Shen Qingyi had a lot of clothes. Shan Ling only picked out two pieces to wear. Then, she took a pair of sneakers from the shoe cabinet, triple-checked that she had the money and that she remembered the electronic lock’s password correctly, and confidently walked out of the apartment.
Standing in the elevator, Shan Ling was extremely excited. It was her first time going out like this, and it felt like she was doing something sneaky.
After leaving the apartment building, Shan Ling used her memory from two weeks ago to find the community gate. She remembered that she needed a key card to get out. Fortunately, Shen Qingyi’s wallet had one.
After leaving the community, a fresh food supermarket was just across the street. Shan Ling entered the supermarket, grabbed a green basket, and started picking things out.
The vegetables in the supermarket were very fresh. Shan Ling bought some leafy greens, two eggplants, and a few tomatoes. She saw that the grapes and pears looked good, so she grabbed some of those too. She also bought a carton of fresh milk, thinking Shen Qingyi could drink it for breakfast.
Shan Ling had already planned it all out for Shen Qingyi. She was going to make some sandwiches and put them in the fridge. With the milk, that would be Shen Qingyi’s breakfast for the next few days.
Hmm… I’ll make a fish for dinner tonight.
Shan Ling looked at the carp swimming in the glass tank and said to the supermarket staff nearby, “Hello, can you give me the biggest fish?”
