- Chapter 148 - Advanced Math, Easy as Pie!
But later, Xu Wanxing realized that Pei Yu only sat near them in the library and didn’t dare follow him after they left. Only then did Xu Wanxing feel relieved. As long as he doesn’t disrupt my life, that’s fine.
Time passed quickly; in the blink of an eye, the two weeks were over. Today was the Advanced Math exam, followed by General Physics, English, and some specialized major courses tomorrow.
Xu Wanxing nervously took his seat in the examination room. When the Advanced Math paper was distributed, Xu Wanxing breathed a sigh of relief. Advanced Math, easy as pie!
Coincidentally, their Advanced Math teacher, the Old Professor, was supervising this exam. The Old Professor liked to walk around and check the students’ answers during the exam. After checking several students in a row, the Old Professor shook his head and sighed, nearly scaring the wits out of those students, who immediately bent their heads to thoroughly review their papers.
When he reached Xu Wanxing, the Old Professor paused, his gaze fixed on Xu Wanxing’s answer to the first question. The Old Professor suddenly burst into a thunderous fit of coughing and slapped Xu Wanxing firmly on the back.
Xu Wanxing was nearly knocked out of his seat and looked at the Old Professor’s suggestive eyes in alarm.
Pei Yu, seated diagonally behind Xu Wanxing, looked terribly grim, his eyes fixed on the hand the Old Professor placed on Xu Wanxing’s back. “Teacher, I’m going to report you for assaulting a student,” Pei Yu’s voice was chillingly sinister.
The Old Professor: “…What nonsense are you talking about? The teacher was just coughing badly and briefly leaned on the student’s shoulder. The relationship is perfectly innocent; it’s all captured on surveillance. Don’t speak, keep quiet, and focus on your paper.” I can’t believe this. This kid actually wanted to report him! He was only giving a kind hint. No matter what, he had a wager with Xu Wanxing. He needed to see Xu Wanxing score above 85, or both of them would be embarrassed.
Xu Wanxing’s back was stinging painfully. The Old Professor looked thin and frail, hunching his back and appearing delicate, but his backhand had hit Xu Wanxing painfully. What powerful hands. Xu Wanxing silently marveled, then focused his eyes on the questions he had answered, checking them rigorously.
Perhaps it was a telepathic understanding between teacher and student, but he instantly understood the Old Professor’s intention. He was checking the paper from the back to the front and couldn’t find his mistake until he reached the first question. Xu Wanxing was stunned. He had clearly calculated the correct answer but selected the wrong option. A truly careless mistake.
Xu Wanxing humbly corrected the answer, listening to the Old Professor walk around the classroom, constantly coughing at the students. What a good teacher.
After supervising their session, the Old Professor’s throat was hoarse from coughing. By the second half of the exam, the Old Professor had lost strength and sat at the podium drinking tea. In university, students are allowed to submit their papers early.
Pei Yu had already finished writing. He arrived late today, and when he entered the examination room, the seats were already full except for his. Upon entering, he immediately spotted Xu Wanxing. Scanning the room and not seeing Ji Rongyu (who was not in the same exam room), Pei Yu immediately breathed a sigh of relief. Ji Rongyu had been guarding him from Xu Wanxing like a thief recently, making him feel incredibly guilty. Now, he finally felt relieved; no one would obstruct him from watching Xu Wanxing.
After finishing his paper and seeing several students leave early, Pei Yu sat motionlessly in his seat, quietly watching Xu Wanxing in the front-left, his eyes holding a tender gaze that he himself was unaware of.
The Old Professor, who was watching the entire room, noticed Pei Yu’s blatant stare and immediately got down from the podium, standing deliberately in front of Pei Yu in retaliation. “Young student, why aren’t you focusing on the questions? You’re just looking at other students without writing your own. Are you trying to cheat?”
Pei Yu’s face darkened. With his reputation as a mathematical genius, a student who was admitted to the school through a mathematics competition, no math teacher wouldn’t recognize his face. He was famously talented. The Old Professor, being his Advanced Math teacher, naturally knew his abilities. To now suggest he was trying to cheat was undoubtedly a huge insult.
Pei Yu pushed his paper forward: “Teacher, I am finished. I wasn’t trying to cheat.”
The Old Professor briefly glanced at the paper. As his eyes skimmed the last few questions, a hint of satisfaction flashed in them. He praised Pei Yu several times and patted his shoulder: “Good, good, good. You knew how to do everything, right? Then you can submit your paper, young student. You are free to leave.”
Pei Yu remained firmly seated, shaking his head. “I like sitting here. I won’t go out.”
The Old Professor’s face stiffened, looking utterly confused. He placed the paper back on Pei Yu’s desk and lightly cleared his throat: “Check it again. Don’t become complacent, hah.”
However, nearly all the students, including Xu Wanxing, had been drawn to their noise. Xu Wanxing was close enough to clearly see the Old Professor’s uncontrollable smile. It seemed Pei Yu had done very well on this exam. Truly a genius. Someone unattainable for me.
Pei Yu sensed the gaze from the front. He forced himself not to look over, yet involuntarily straightened his back even more, his eyes firmly fixed on the paper in front of him. The Old Professor couldn’t hide his satisfaction when he saw Pei Yu’s upright posture. It was well-known that the older generation favored children who were so inherently upright; he looked like excellent material for the military.
The Old Professor was in a good mood. Passing by Xu Wanxing, he leaned over and glanced at Xu Wanxing’s paper. Seeing the correction made to the first question, his expression grew even warmer.
Xu Wanxing finished the exam, checked it repeatedly, and only breathed a sigh of relief when he was sure he had scored at least 85 points on the questions he knew. This Advanced Math paper was not particularly difficult for the Old Professor; roughly 70% was doable, 20% was somewhat challenging, and 10% was truly difficult. He roughly estimated that he should have scored over 90 points, so he was safe now.
With only 30 minutes left until the exam ended, Xu Wanxing took one last look at the result of his strenuous Advanced Math study and stood up to submit his paper at the podium.
The Old Professor sat at the podium leisurely sipping tea. He saw the paper Xu Wanxing handed him, narrowed his eyes, then smiled, and nodded. Xu Wanxing knew he had met the Old Professor’s goal, and joy colored his brow. Before he could step down from the podium, he saw someone else rush up to submit their paper. This person was none other than Pei Yu.
Seeing Xu Wanxing, Pei Yu subconsciously avoided his gaze, submitted his paper to the podium, and then, pretending to notice Xu Wanxing by chance, said with feigned surprise: “What a coincidence! To meet you here. Let’s go out together.”
Xu Wanxing: … How perfunctory, how poor the acting. But in front of so many people, he couldn’t very well embarrass Pei Yu. Xu Wanxing acknowledged him and walked out of the classroom first, with Pei Yu following closely behind.
The Old Professor glanced at the other papers, then looked at Pei Yu’s retreating back, shaking his head helplessly. He was an old hand; of course, he knew exactly what the young student was plotting.
