But Xu Wanxing was also innocent; it wasn’t like he chose to hide this from Pei Yu. It was all the fault of the wretched system. In any case, none of it was his fault; Xu Wanxing firmly believed this.
When Lu Yanbai’s bandaged hand touched his neck, Xu Wanxing inexplicably felt a sense of shared fate—two castaways on the same desolate shore. They were both patients wrapped in bandages. It was just that Lu Yanbai was slightly worse off; Lu Yanbai even had a plaster cast on his leg.
Xu Wanxing patted Lu Yanbai’s arm, “It’s okay, it’s not bad.”
Lu Yanbai remained uneasy, wishing he could unwrap the bandage himself to thoroughly examine Xu Wanxing’s neck.
Suddenly, there was a light knock at the door, rhythmic in a specific pattern.
Lu Yanbai didn’t hesitate: “Come in,” he commanded.
The secretary entered, holding an item, his face full of excitement. Upon seeing Xu Wanxing awake, he froze momentarily, subconsciously suppressing the smile curving his lips.
Lu Yanbai frowned, “Tell me what happened.”
The secretary recounted the events from Xu Wanxing’s memory, embellishing the details and heavily emphasizing that it constituted school bullying.
Xu Wanxing shifted his gaze guiltily; he dared not lie again. The faint stinging pain on his neck was a constant reminder. No more extremes.
Lu Yanbai’s expression darkened as he considered how to handle the situation—more accurately, how to deal with Pei Yu. How could his Baby be at fault? He was just a minor internet celebrity, and his roommate became the biggest supporter in his live stream. It was a small matter that he didn’t dare openly admit, yet Pei Yu had gone so far as to injure Xu Wanxing’s neck this badly by apologizing!
As thoughts raced through Lu Yanbai’s mind, the secretary quietly pulled out the photographs he was holding.
“CEO Lu, someone has actually already taught Pei Yu a lesson.”
Lu Yanbai took the photos, looked at Pei Yu’s face—swollen and bruised beyond recognition—and frowned slightly. This feeling of revenge not hitting the right mark was truly upsetting.
Lu Yanbai suddenly recalled that another man had answered the phone when he called Xu Wanxing.
“That’s him.”
Xu Wanxing looked at Pei Yu’s face in the photo, which resembled a ‘tomato and egg soup’ mixture, and couldn’t help but let out a laugh. Hearing Lu Yanbai speak, he instinctively asked, “Who is it?”
“The person who brought you to the hospital. He has already disciplined Pei Yu,” Lu Yanbai indicated the picture.
Xu Wanxing’s mind flashed to the face of Ji Rongyu. He secretly mused that Ji Rongyu was truly a good person. Wait a minute, doesn’t Ji Rongyu like Pei Yu? For Pei Yu’s sake, Ji Rongyu actually went and had someone beat him up this badly? Truly a good person! What more could one ask for in such a friend!
At this moment, Xu Wanxing did not know that all of Pei Yu’s injuries were inflicted by Ji Rongyu alone. After realizing he had nearly choked “Wanwan” (a term of endearment for Xu Wanxing), Pei Yu had been utterly disheartened, almost taking his own life. Thankfully, Ji Rongyu had dissuaded him, administering the beating just in time. This action had effectively dispelled Pei Yu’s death wish.
Just then, the ward door was knocked upon again.
Xu Wanxing instinctively looked toward Lu Yanbai, his eyes holding a question. Who is coming to report to Lu Yanbai now?
Lu Yanbai was also slightly puzzled and gave the secretary an inconspicuous glance. As CEO Lu’s personal secretary, he understood the silent cue immediately and walked to the door to open it. With just one look, he was startled by the ‘tomato and egg soup’ face outside.
The secretary’s voice trembled, “Who are you? What are you here for?” At this moment, he completely lacked the composure and decorum expected of a top-tier secretary.
Two people stood outside the door. Ji Rongyu pushed past the person beside him to stand at the threshold, smiling at the secretary: “We’re here to see Xu Wanxing. I am his good classmate and good friend. Is Xu Wanxing awake?”
Xu Wanxing immediately recognized Ji Rongyu’s voice and looked excitedly toward the doorway. “He saved me! Let him in quickly!”
Lu Yanbai also recognized the voice from the phone call he’d had earlier and waved a hand at the secretary, signaling him to let them in.
The secretary stepped aside, and Ji Rongyu entered the ward. Seeing Xu Wanxing looking quite energetic, he breathed a sigh of relief. He moved aside, revealing Pei Yu standing behind him.
When Lu Yanbai saw the face he had just seen in the photograph, he instinctively pushed his wheelchair forward to shield the bedside. His voice turned icy: “If you are here to apologize, it is entirely unnecessary. We will pursue this matter with you to the very end.”
Lu Yanbai’s oppressive aura was no joke. Xu Wanxing ducked behind him, shrinking his neck, trying hard to restrain himself from laughing. Pei Yu’s formerly handsome, sharp-featured “wolf-dog” face was now mottled with green, purple, yellow, red, and blue patches, looking exactly like a spilled palette of paint. Ji Rongyu and Lin Yao (implied to be the other person present) accounted for the majority of the colors, making it indistinguishable from tomato and egg soup.
Xu Wanxing clamped his lips shut, refusing to look at Pei Yu, struggling to maintain composure.
However, in Pei Yu’s eyes, this scene suggested that Wanwan was utterly repulsed by him, unwilling to even spare him a glance, his mouth tightly pursed out of sheer disgust. Pei Yu’s heart instantly turned cold. His gaze swept past Lu Yanbai in front of Xu Wanxing and he stated grimly, “I apologize. I was too agitated at the time and couldn’t control myself. You can hit me, or you can even strangle me.”
Xu Wanxing looked up at Ji Rongyu, who was not far from Pei Yu, and his mouth twitched. Brother, your words are too severe. He wasn’t that vicious.
Seeing Xu Wanxing look at him, Ji Rongyu felt a surge of secret delight, though he maintained an image of serene elegance, reaching out to pull Pei Yu’s arm: “Speak properly.”
Pei Yu glanced at him with an unreadable expression, then fixed his gaze back on Xu Wanxing’s neck—more specifically, on the bandage wrapped around it. Pain flashed in his eyes. It’s all my fault. Why did I go crazy? Why did I almost choke Wanwan to death?
Pei Yu looked miserable, and in the next second, he knelt before Xu Wanxing.
Xu Wanxing was startled, nearly falling off the bed. Luckily, Lu Yanbai was watching closely by the bedside and immediately stabilized his unsteady form. Lu Yanbai’s tone was disapproving: “Be careful, Baby. Don’t pity him; he deserved what he got.”
Xu Wanxing felt a touch of fear. He had always been the one kneeling, praying to gods and Buddhas, and in his heart, only deities and parents were worthy of a bow. Though he had no parents, he knew the immense value parents held in everyone’s heart. But what was Pei Yu to him? They had only met briefly, and he had deceived Pei Yu. He still remembered in his own days of extreme poverty, Pei Yu, mistakenly thinking he was being kept by someone, had immediately offered him several million. Pei Yu’s heart was good; he was a good person. Xu Wanxing knew this.
Xu Wanxing’s heart softened a little, and he spoke with a touch of anxiety: “Get up and talk. Get up, don’t kneel—I cannot accept this.” Offering him such a grand gesture was completely unnecessary.
Pei Yu shook his head, kneeling squarely on the cold floor, his back held perfectly straight, as if he were not kneeling but undergoing military drill training.
