- Chapter 5 - Did He Abandon You?
The hospital, emergency department.
As luck would have it, the person treating Shen Qing turned out to be an acquaintance. When the doctor looked up and saw Shen Qing’s face, his professional demeanor flickered with emotion. He stood up in surprise. “Junior Shen?”
Shen Qing was also stunned. “Senior Lin?”
Dr. Lin was a Beta, just like Shen Qing used to be. He did not notice the pheromones on Shen Qing’s body; he only saw his pale complexion and his swaying, fragile frame. Shen Qing looked so broken that it evoked pity. Dr. Lin hurried forward to support him.
Next came several routine examinations, but when the reports appeared before them, Dr. Lin’s brow furrowed tightly. Shen Qing had attended the same college as him, though they had different majors. Back then, when freshmen were required to join clubs, Shen Qing had joined an obscure astronomy association to earn credits. Lin Zhixue was the vice president at the time.
Now, Lin Zhixue held the report with a frown so deep it could crush a fly. He pursed his lips, and his expression was heavy.
“You were given a temporary mark?”
“Was it Lu Shijuan who marked you?”
“Why did he not accompany you here?”
Back in university, Shen Qing and Lu Shijuan were prominent figures. The two were inseparable, and both were exceptionally handsome. However, Lu Shijuan was like a terrifying alpha wolf who wanted to stick to Shen Qing every waking moment. If anyone dared to approach, they would be met with his fierce aggression.
Oddly enough, despite that terrifying possessiveness, the Alpha never admitted they were in a relationship. Lin Zhixue did not like Alphas, and right now, he was convinced Lu Shijuan was a scumbag.
“Did he abandon you after playing with your feelings?”
Faced with this barrage of questions, Shen Qing, who had been extremely nervous, was now somewhat dazed. After a long moment, he slowly shook his head and lowered his eyes to deny it.
“It was not him.”
He could not let anyone know the truth. He was fortunate that Lin Zhixue was a Beta and could not smell whose pheromones they were; otherwise, he would not be able to keep the secret today.
Lin Zhixue looked at him in surprise. “Not him? He actually let someone else get close to you? Wait, I remember you are like me, a B…”
Before he could finish, the office became so quiet that a needle hitting the floor would have been audible. Lin Zhixue stared intently at the examination report. “Shen Qing, you have had a delayed differentiation!”
Shen Qing had already guessed as much, but Lin Zhixue’s words felt like a final verdict and a sentence. He took a deep breath and tried to stay calm, but his fingers beneath his sleeves were trembling slightly.
Lu Shijuan hated Omegas.
He remembered when they first met, one of Lu Shijuan’s childhood friends differentiated into an Omega and confessed to him. Lu Shijuan went into a rage on the spot, causing a massive scene. With a dark expression, the boy, who had not yet lost his youthful air, nearly strangled the other person with his pheromones.
That was the first time Shen Qing realized how terrifying an Alpha’s pheromones could be. Later, although that Omega was saved, their gland was damaged. They took a long leave of absence from school and eventually transferred elsewhere.
And now, Shen Qing had differentiated into an Omega. His secret crush could never see the light of day. He never thought he would be with Lu Shijuan; staying by his side as a friend seemed enough. But now, even that opportunity was about to be stripped away.
“Shen Qing, there is something wrong with your pheromones.” Lin Zhixue’s expression was grave. “Wait a moment. I will call my mentor and ask him to come over.”
It is well known that once a doctor starts calling for backup, the problem is serious. Shen Qing underwent further tests, but the results would not be ready that day. He would have to go home and wait.
Although Lin Zhixue was a Beta, he noticed the wound on the back of Shen Qing’s neck. He frowned and stopped Shen Qing as he was about to leave.
“Put on a scent-blocking patch. You are covered in the scent of an Alpha right now. Also, take these medicines.”
He carefully gave several instructions. Before leaving, Shen Qing asked for a favor.
“Senior, can you help me keep my differentiation a secret?”
This was not a difficult request, especially since it involved patient privacy.
“I know,” Lin Zhixue said. “I am a doctor with professional ethics.”
Shen Qing finally walked out of the hospital. The sunlight outside was perfect, shining warmly on every inch of his skin and bringing a hint of warmth to his pale complexion.
Shen Qing gripped the medicine in his hand and was about to call a car with his phone when suddenly, a car not far away honked at him a few times. He looked over and saw Lu Shijuan walking toward him with long strides. He seemed to have just arrived; he had not even parked the car properly before rushing toward him.
“Xiao Qing!”
Lu Shijuan grabbed Shen Qing’s wrist. Shen Qing was already thin, and now that he was sick, he looked even more fragile. Deep concern rose in Lu Shijuan’s eyes. He bent down, preparing to pick him up.
Shen Qing was startled and hurriedly stopped him. “Lu Shijuan, what are you doing?”
Lu Shijuan said sternly, “Carrying you to the car.”
Shen Qing replied, “I can walk by myself.”
The moment the words left his mouth, Lu Shijuan ignored him and picked him up in a princess carry. People were coming and going at the hospital entrance, and their actions quickly drew attention. Shen Qing was not used to being stared at, and his face flushed red.
“Put me down.”
“Lu Shijuan!”
Lu Shijuan had always been wild. No one could stop him from doing what he wanted; he only exercised restraint occasionally because he did not want Shen Qing to be angry. Now that Shen Qing was sick, to hell with restraint!
With a cold face, he carried him to the passenger seat, carefully fastened his seatbelt, and finally touched his forehead. The skin was no longer burning, but the temperature was still high. Lu Shijuan’s brow was almost tied in a knot. “Why did you not tell me you were unwell?”
Shen Qing opened his mouth to speak.
Lu Shijuan continued, “The lines at this kind of hospital take forever. Tell me next time, and I can arrange a private…”
“No need,” Shen Qing interrupted. “It is just a common fever. There is no need for such trouble.”
“Shen Qing!” Lu Shijuan’s voice rose. He hated it most when Shen Qing distanced himself. He wished Shen Qing would throw a small tantrum or argue with him. Of course, not a huge fight, for that would hurt their relationship, but a small spat was endearing. He liked to coax him, to shamelessly coax him. It would be even better if Xiao Qing would give him a couple of slaps.
But Shen Qing was always perfectly composed. He never made excessive demands, let alone threw tantrums.
A fire burned in Lu Shijuan’s heart. The events of last night and Shen Qing’s illness were all weighing on him. His mood was terrible; even the sound of the car door closing was louder than usual. When he looked up and saw Shen Qing startle, he felt regretful again.
“Xiao Qing, did I scare you?”
“I am sorry.”
Shen Qing’s entire body was aching. He had no strength, and even a slight movement pulled at his wounds, especially after he was moved. When Lu Shijuan had placed him in the passenger seat earlier, he had almost cried out.
“It is fine.” Shen Qing exhaled and began to act ignorant. “Did anything happen last night?”
Now, it was Lu Shijuan’s turn for his entire body to stiffen. His hands gripped the steering wheel tightly until his knuckles turned white and the veins on the back of his hands bulged. But when he spoke, his tone was casual.
“Just a small matter.”
Shen Qing lowered his eyes, his long lashes hiding the fluctuating emotions within. After a long while, he asked softly, “Then how did your forehead get injured?”
Lu Shijuan could not help it and cursed on the spot, “I was blindsided by a piece of trash!”
Shen Qing’s breathing faltered. The small, faint light in his eyes dimmed completely.
