- Out of Control Overnight: The Irritable Top Alpha Goes Mad Searching for His Wife
- Chapter 4 - A Mistaken Beginning Should Be Buried
Shen Qing did not even have the strength to return home. He was terrified that Lu Shijun would find him, leading to a total collapse of their relationship. In the end, he did not even know how he managed to drag himself back to his apartment.
Once home, he lacked the energy to even take a shower. Unsurprisingly, he developed a high fever.
In his dreams, he seemed to be pulled back to that chaotic lounge. Those things that should never have happened played out in his mind in a confusing, fragmented loop.
When he woke again, the sky was still pitch black.
His phone had died, and Shen Qing could not tell if he had slept for an entire day and night or merely rested for a few hours. He felt famished, yet he had no appetite. He found a first aid kit and checked his temperature; it was high, at 39°C.
At this moment, even his breath felt scalding. Shen Qing could not afford to dwell on those terrible events. While he still had a bit of strength left, he had to get to the hospital. Before leaving, however, he had to clean himself up.
He had not been able to wash the night before, and after sleeping, the traces on his body had dried. He did not know how to face it.
He was not angry about what Lu Shijun had done. Shen Qing liked him; in fact, he did not even know when that affection had changed into something else. They had shared a dorm in college and been inseparable as best friends. Later, forget it.
A pained smile appeared on Shen Qing’s pale face. A secret crush is something that can never see the light of day.
Because of his parents, Lu Shijun feared marriage, feared being gay, and feared relationships in general. He disliked Omegas, viewing them as frail, incapable of self-defense, and essentially useless. He also detested Alphas, seeing them as a group of fools controlled by pheromones—creatures that would turn into dogs the moment an Omega released even a tiny amount of scent.
Naturally, he did not like Betas either, viewing them as colorless, odorless, and lacking any presence.
Shen Qing was the only exception, but he knew very well that this exception was rooted in a friendship that began in their teens. He was the only person who stayed by Lu Shijun’s side when his family fell apart and he was at his lowest. Had anyone else been there at that time, perhaps that special status would belong to someone else.
Shen Qing lowered his slightly reddened eyelids. Due to the high fever, a sickly flush appeared on his fair skin. He numbly took a shower, grabbed his backup phone, and headed to the hospital.
On the way, as soon as the backup phone powered on, it was bombarded with messages. The device lagged briefly under the influx. Other assistants were contacting him like they were losing their minds. Shen Qing skimmed through the messages on the road; they were all saying that something had happened to President Lu.
Before he could even reply, a call came through.
“Brother Shen? Chief Assistant? Are you listening? Something happened to President Lu!”
“Speak,” Shen Qing said. Due to his illness, his voice was weak and lacked energy.
The colleague was too anxious about Lu Shijun to notice and said hurriedly, “President Lu was blindsided. His forehead was cut open, and he needed three stitches. I…”
Before the sentence could be finished, the phone was snatched away. On the other end of the line was Lu Shijun’s exasperated voice. As expected of an S-rank Alpha, his recovery speed was remarkable.
“Shen Qing, where did you go?”
It was not the teasing “Assistant Shen,” nor the intimate “Qingqing,” nor even the smiling “Xiao Qing.” It was his full name, spoken with suppressed fury.
Shen Qing’s breathing faltered for a moment. He did not know if this anger was directed at him, but it felt no different. He quickly composed himself. “President Lu, I am sick.”
Lu Shijun’s voice paused, turning instantly to concern. “Sick? Which hospital? I am coming to find you right now.”
“No need.” He touched the bitten gland on the back of his neck. Even a light touch caused enough pain to make him frown. Shen Qing’s current condition was truly unsuitable for a meeting. “I just have a common fever. What about you? How did you hurt your head? Why the stitches?”
Lu Shijun was not listening to him at all. Soon, rustling sounds came through the phone, followed by the startled cries of other assistants.
“President Lu, your injury has not healed yet! The doctor said you must stay for observation for a day!”
“President Lu, your pheromones are still in a state of riot! You cannot go out easily!”
“President Lu…”
Shen Qing spoke, his voice quiet but calm, and the chaos on the other end briefly fell silent.
He said, “Lu Shijun, do not make a scene.”
It was a good thing Shen Qing was not physically present, otherwise, he would have seen that Lu Shijun was currently like a rampaging lion, uncontrollable by anyone. His eyes were bloodshot and filled with exhaustion.
During the heat of a rut, a pheromone riot leaves an Alpha with nothing but primal instinct. He loathed that instinct, yet the long-term use of suppressants had only treated the symptoms, not the cause. This time, he had lost control.
He was furious. The blurry shadow in his mind should have been an Omega he adored, someone his pheromones had recognized, but now he felt only panic, without a shred of joy. He was afraid that Shen Qing would despise him.
During their four years of college, even without pheromones, Shen Qing was pursued by countless people. They would watch him secretly, send him love letters, and confess their feelings. Whenever Lu Shijun thought about those people daring to desire Shen Qing, a murderous aura would surge.
He had used the most primitive methods: the Alphas were beaten, the Omegas were threatened, and the Betas were suppressed. Consequently, for those four years, he was the only one by Shen Qing’s side.
He did these things in secret because he was afraid Shen Qing would leave him, so he coaxed him into being best friends for life from the very beginning. To achieve this, he even tried to blacken the reputation of both groups, including his own.
He told Shen Qing that falling in love was disgusting. He claimed that the bond between an Alpha and an Omega was merely animal instinct, and that as higher beings, humans who could be influenced by pheromones were low-level trash.
He was not quite as harsh about Betas, since his dear friend Shen Qing was one, but he did not let them off either. He insisted on pointing out the plight of Betas: what use was someone who could not even differentiate?
Naturally, Shen Qing was excluded from these definitions. Because Shen Qing indulged him at the time, he never argued back.
But now, everything was different! Everything had changed!
Whenever Lu Shijun thought of that damn Omega, his anger flared. He felt dirty now, and he feared his Qingqing was about to start loathing him.
“Doctor! President Lu’s pheromones are rioting again!”
The voices of the assistants came through the phone one after another. Shen Qing keenly caught the mention of the doctor. Lu Shijun only went to the research institute when things were very serious.
He frowned. “Lu Shijun, I will go to the institute to see you later, but you must listen to the doctor now.”
Lu Shijun did not listen at all. His handsome features were shrouded in a thick, murderous gloom. He remained stubborn and insisted, “I am coming to find you.”
Shen Qing truly lacked the strength to deal with his antics and hung up the phone directly.
