- Out of Control Overnight: The Irritable Top Alpha Goes Mad Searching for His Wife
- Chapter 34 - Gloomy Lu the Dog, Breaking Down Every Day
Shen Qing was so exasperated that he actually laughed. “You are an Alpha. Could a hit from me actually hurt you?”
Lu Shijun lied through his teeth. Under Shen Qing’s skeptical gaze, he nodded without a second thought. “Yes,” he replied, acting aggrieved like a spoiled child. “Qingqing, it really hurts.”
His eyes, which had been clouded for so long, finally saw the reality of the situation. Shen Qing looked at him expressionlessly, and for a moment, he felt an urge to hit him again.
“It should hurt. Comfort is for the dead. Now, get to work.”
His friend had suddenly become fierce, even showing a hint of violent tendencies, yet every movement grew more vivid with the fluctuation of his emotions. Lu Shijun absolutely loved it. He covered his “injured” face and listened to the scolding, the corners of his mouth twitching as he struggled to suppress a smile.
“Fine, I will listen to you.”
Seeing him take the documents, Shen Qing prepared to leave. Seeing this, Lu Shijun instinctively called out to him again.
Shen Qing replied, “During working hours, slacking off is prohibited. I am going back to my workstation to work. As for President Lu,” he checked his wristwatch, “there is a high-level meeting in an hour. After the meeting, at twelve o’clock, you have a lunch meeting with the person in charge of Longqi Group. This afternoon…”
Lu Shijun did not want to hear any more. Even a powerful CEO could hate social obligations. “Can’t someone else go to that lunch? The company employs so many people; does it have to be me who eats that meal?”
Compared to dining with others, he much preferred eating with his friend. The food did not need to be lavish; it just needed to be the two of them without any outsiders interrupting.
Shen Qing looked at his temperamental boss with resignation. “No. You agreed to it yourself two weeks ago. Did you forget?”
Lu Shijun actually had forgotten. Why would he have agreed to such a request? He hated social business lunches more than anything. As if remembering something, Shen Qing’s face suddenly went stiff. “Do I need to remind you?”
Wait! Something was wrong with his friend’s mood. This definitely had something to do with him. He racked his brain and eventually managed to recall the event.
During a previous activity, the head of Longqi Group had suddenly begun praising Shen Qing. Not only that, but he also remarked that their friendship was indestructible and as solid as gold, calling them the most well-matched pair of friends in all of China.
At the time, Lu Shijun had been delighted by the praise, thinking the man was very discerning. His relationship with Qingqing was more intense and intimate than that of any couple; it transcended blood relations. Family affection and romantic love both had to step aside.
Shen Qing had been there at the time. Seeing the two of them chatting so enthusiastically that they forgot where they were, he had been forced to drag Lu Shijun away. If he had not, he was afraid the man would have started applying even more ridiculous labels to them.
Lu Shijun grew excited again. “Right! The head of Longqi said that a couple married for seven years is called a copper wedding. Since Xiao Qing and I have known each other for seven years, do we count as a copper wedding?”
Shen Qing was at a loss. Are we married? Why are you obsessing over weddings!
“No,” Lu Shijun clicked his tongue and corrected himself. “Copper is too cheap. It should at least be gold.”
Shen Qing could not listen to any more. “Enough. Stop talking about weddings. Do you even have a wife? You’re acting like you’re married.”
Lu Shijun thought back to the research he had done on how friends interact. Aside from nicknames like “baby,” some also called each other “husband” and “wife.” Initially, he had thought those titles were vulgar and unpleasant. Now, things were different.
“Who says I do not have a wife?” Lu Shijun raised his arm and draped it over Shen Qing’s shoulder, quickly leaning in close. “Wife.”
His voice was deep and husky, carrying a light, affectionate, and elegant chuckle. The moment the word was spoken, Shen Qing felt his heart contract sharply, followed by a frantic pounding in his chest. At that moment, he felt as if his ribs were aching from the impact.
His breathing became momentarily erratic. His face darkened, and his voice turned cold. “Lu Shijun, you can eat whatever you want, but you cannot just say whatever you want.”
Lu Shijun could sense the change in him and squinted his eyes, feeling very displeased. His friend was this agitated over a mere title. Did he really want to find a partner? Did he really want to get married?
Was he not good enough? Or were there “wild men” outside trying to seduce him again?
What was so good about marriage? So-called love was nothing more than the work of hormones. After a few months, when the body’s cells were replaced, love would turn to hate. No one could escape it. Once you peeled back the filthy cloth of marriage, human nature was revealed to be disgusting.
While Lu Shijun harbored these dark thoughts about the institution of marriage, he maintained an innocent expression. “What is wrong? It is just a title. Many people use it. Baby is a title, and so are husband and wife. Besides, isn’t Qingqing single? Once you find a partner, if he does not like it, I can change how I address you.”
He spoke generously, but his heart was already twisted. If his friend found a partner, no, he would not find one. He would take his friend and personally peel back that cloth of marriage to show him that there was no such thing as a good marriage in this world. Beneath all intimacy lay nothing but disgusting illusions. In this world, only he was different.
Faced with Lu Shijun’s self-righteous answer, Shen Qing felt utterly powerless. “What does this have to do with finding a partner? Every title carries a different meaning.”
He tried to explain, but Lu Shijun simply would not listen. “If Xiao Qing does not like the title wife, I can change it to another one. Husband.”
Shen Qing was speechless.
Lu Shijun smiled radiantly. “Husband, how should we celebrate our golden wedding anniversary?”
Shen Qing truly regretted trying to explain anything! He was choked with rage. “Celebrate my ass! Get lost and get to work!”
With that, he strode out of the office and slammed the door shut. He returned to his office with a grim expression. As he passed the secretary department, the originally lively office fell silent the moment he arrived. A secretary who had just walked in on high heels cautiously poked her head out.
“Hi, Assistant Shen. Good morning.”
Shen Qing replied with a wooden face and a very cute response, “The morning is not good. It is a bad morning.”
The secretary could not help but burst into laughter. An assistant as adorable as Shen Qing, let alone President Lu, anyone would want to tease him. “Is President Lu working? Speaking of which, I dropped a file on the floor earlier and forgot to pick it up.”
Shen Qing said, “I picked it up for you. By the way, I will not be attending the meeting later. You and Jiang Qin should go.”
Meetings required recorders; usually, one secretary and one assistant were sufficient. Unless it was a major meeting, the entire staff was not required. This was not a big deal, so the secretary did not mind.
The two only chatted briefly, unaware that the surveillance cameras in the corridor had already exposed everything. Inside the CEO’s office, Lu Shijun stared at the surveillance feed on his phone. As he listened to their conversation, his expression became gloomy. Lin Zhixue was no longer a threat, but what if his friend ended up liking girls?
Had all his defensive efforts been for nothing? The more Lu Shijun thought about it, the more irritable he became. Regarding the meeting, he ended up dragging Shen Qing along with him anyway. Once it was over, he gazed at his friend resentfully.
“Xiao Qing, what do you think of girls?”
Shen Qing’s hand paused as he gathered the documents. He thought Lu Shijun was finally starting to understand. “They are very good. Very cute.”
The more he praised them, the more Lu Shijun felt his composure break. “How are they good? Are they as good as me? Are they as cute as me, or as strong as me? Omega girls are delicate and weak; you would have to coax them. I cannot even bear to make you coax me, so why would you coax her? And as for Alpha women, if they were to pull it out, it would be even bigger than your…”
Shen Qing could not listen to any more and quickly covered Lu Shijun’s mouth. “Lu Shijun, do not lose your mind!”
