Our Summer Isn't Over Yet - Chapter 44
“Like His Excellency?”
Aaron muttered softly. He was wearing his hat pulled down low, so his face wasn’t clearly visible, but he seemed to resemble Walter. Aaron squinted his right eye, trying to get a better look, but it was no use.
The carriage was already moving away, and the curtains were drawn tightly. He briefly wished his left eye hadn’t been blinded, then he could have identified the person in the carriage. His left eye, blinded by shrapnel in the last war, was sometimes an obstacle like this. Aaron rubbed the eye covered by the eyepatch for no particular reason.
‘There’s no reason for His Excellency March to be here, of all people.’
And in such a shabby carriage.
“Hello, nice to meet you. I’m Mel.”
“Yes, I’m here under the orders of His Excellency, Richard…”
As the doctor’s face, hidden by the umbrella, was revealed, Aaron trailed off.
A woman with short, bobbed hair. Dark skin, seemingly Murad. And a woman wearing an eyepatch like himself.
The difference between Aaron Hafner and her was that she was covering both eyes.
As if noticing his gaze, she readily explained, “I’m blind. It doesn’t cause any major problems in treating patients, so you don’t have to worry.”
Aaron’s lips parted at Mel’s calm response.
He couldn’t understand Dylan at all. But he couldn’t be rude to Mel in front of him either. Like her, he had lost one eye, and he should have been removed from his position as adjutant because of it, but he was still working thanks to Dylan’s help.
Aaron forced himself to ignore what he saw and moved on.
Mel’s arrival caused a stir in the mansion.
It was perhaps natural that everyone was shocked that she was a Murad, and a doctor who was completely blind in both eyes. Despite their murmurs, Mel followed Aaron without concern.
“How is the Madam?”
“She seems to have just woken up, but she told me not to enter the room.”
Although her fever was going down, it was clear that her condition was not good.
Aaron nodded at the servant’s words and hurried to Mia’s room. He carefully knocked on the door and spoke.
“Madam, it’s Aaron.”
“…Sir Aaron?”
Her voice was excessively kind and gentle for someone who was ill.
If someone hadn’t witnessed her collapse, they would think she was no different from usual.
“His Excellency has been informed of your condition and has ordered that you be examined by a doctor.”
There was a moment of silence.
Aaron waited anxiously, wondering if Mia had fallen asleep again in the meantime. After a moment of waiting, a somewhat wary reply came.
“I’m, I’m fine.”
At Mia’s refusal, Aaron quickly recited Mel’s background.
“I heard that you have been examined by this doctor before. If you are uncomfortable with the mansion’s doctor, how about getting examined by her?”
“I’ve been examined by her before?”
Her voice sounded doubtful.
For a moment, Aaron wondered if Dylan had given him the wrong information. But there was no time to dwell on such trivial matters. Aaron erased the question in his mind and recited Dylan’s words again.
“Yes, you have in the past, and she is the one who recently reviewed your chart.”
Again, silence fell.
Just as Aaron and the servants waiting around him were feeling frustrated, Mia’s voice was heard again.
“Let her in.”
As soon as her permission was given, the faces of everyone waiting outside brightened. They even urged Mel to go in quickly.
After Mel entered, the closed door remained unopened for a while.
How much time had passed? Mel came out of Mia’s room. At the same time, Aaron, who had been pacing around, stood in front of Mel.
“How is the Madam? I heard it could lead to pneumonia, is she okay? His Excellency is very anxious because he can’t come to the mansion right away.”
Aaron said, recalling that he had been contacted by Dylan while Mel was in Mia’s room. His superior seemed to be trying not to show it, but Aaron, who had worked by his side for a long time, could quickly recognize his inner thoughts because it was a sight he had never seen before.
Despite Aaron’s urging, Mel calmly continued.
“The Madam simply had a fever. She took antipyretics appropriately, so there was nothing else I could do.”
“Her fever didn’t go down for a long time even after taking antipyretics. Did you check if there were any other problems?”
“She’s just naturally weak. She’s getting an IV now, so she’ll come to her senses soon.”
Even with Mel’s confirmation, Aaron asked for confirmation several times.
She said she would stay by her side while the IV was dripping and tried to go back into the room. Mel, who had grabbed the doorknob, turned to Aaron as if she had forgotten something.
“Oh, and I changed the Madam’s clothes because they looked uncomfortable. Of course, I moved after getting the Madam’s permission. Will there be a problem?”
The servants had not even dared to touch Mia, who had been desperately trying to protect her clothes even while barely holding on to her fading consciousness, but Mel said that she had finished it without any problems.
The servants glanced at her.
They had curious looks on their faces, wondering what had happened inside, but they had to retreat when they received Aaron’s cold gaze.
“No, of course not. More than that, you said you would stay by the Madam’s side while the IV is dripping?”
“Yes, I think I should watch her for about an hour.”
Aaron said it was good and conveyed Dylan’s message.
“His Excellency said he wants you to stay at the mansion for a while, checking on the Madam’s condition.”
After hesitating for a moment, Mel bowed and replied that she understood.
When Aaron nodded after hearing the answer, Mel disappeared into Mia’s room.
“Haa, I have to go back to report to His Excellency quickly. Then, everyone, please take good care of the Madam.”
Aaron hurried back to the main building.
After a storm had passed, the annex was quiet as if it had never been noisy.
Drip, drip. A constant noise tickled her ears.
Mia slowly opened her eyes and slowly looked around.
‘What was I doing just before?’
The moment she tried to organize her memories to awaken her hazy mind, a chill ran down her spine.
She had made a deal with Morgan and started to get a fever on the way back to the mansion. She didn’t think it was a big deal, and she seemed to have lost consciousness not long after returning to her room.
She remembered telling those who touched her in the middle not to touch her, but even that wasn’t accurate.
‘I think someone came to see me.’
Could it be? The moment Mia’s spine became chilling, she opened her half-closed eyes wide. Then, she hurriedly got up and checked her clothes first.
It wasn’t the blue dress she wore to the banquet hall. It was the negligee she usually wore.
No matter how many times she touched her body, the soft texture didn’t disappear. One arm was rolled up and connected to a needle.
It seemed that someone had seen the inside of her body.
Not long after waking up, her judgment was slower than usual. As Mia slowly gathered the words she had said, someone spoke to her.
“Madam, are you awake?”
As if noticing Mia’s wariness, she quickly greeted her.
“Nice to meet you. My name is Mel, and I’m in charge of the Madam’s examination.”
“…Mel?”
Only then did the disorganized thoughts begin to fall into place one by one.
She said she was a doctor sent by Dylan.
Aaron said she was someone who had examined her before. Of course, there was no way such a person existed. Who would directly show this hideous body to?
If she guessed correctly, when bringing the doctor designated by Dylan into the mansion, the most plausible reason was that she had examined her in the past.
‘I hope I didn’t make any strange mistakes.’
It seemed that there were no mistakes since the surroundings were not noisy. Mia’s expression hardened for a moment as she felt her body lighter than before she fell asleep. It was because she realized that she had been treated with the help of someone sent by Dylan.
‘I borrowed his hand in this situation.’
That fact returned as a slight anger.
Mia, staring at the arm with the needle stuck in it with cold eyes, forced a soft smile and looked for the place where the voice came from. She stared at Mel, who was standing there blankly. Short bobbed hair, dark skin, and covering both eyes.
“You…”
“Yes, I am blind,” Mel replied before Mia could say anything.
“I won’t say anything I learned here, so you don’t have to worry.”
In the first place, since she was someone sent by Dylan, there was no worry that she would reveal Mia’s secret.
It’s just that her head was a little sore.
Now, she felt like she knew without thinking deeply that it was Dylan’s consideration to find a blind doctor.
“I’m not worried about that.”
The corners of her lips, which had been slightly raised, silently lowered.
“If you have any discomfort, please tell me anytime. I will be staying at the mansion for a while to check on the Madam’s condition.”
“Yes, I’ll tell you anytime, so don’t worry.”
Mia looked at Mel, whose eyes were covered, and thought it was very fortunate.
Because no one could see her expression right now.
