- Chapter 43.2 - Lanlan Who looks like her father
In fact, what he said was only partly true. When he came in, he really did call out Lu Wanqiu’s name several times. But it wasn’t that she didn’t respond at all—she was lying on her side, her back turned to him, and silently tugged the blanket down a little.
He thought that was a clear signal. He hurried over, but the moment he sat down on the edge of the bed—before he could even touch her—she suddenly cried out. And the night-shift nurse was rather unusual. At this hour, most would already be dozing off, yet she wasn’t. The instant Lu Wanqiu screamed, the nurse rushed in.
And just like that, he was caught red-handed.
Inside the ward, Huihui was still thanking the nurse. “It’s all thanks to you. If you had come a moment later, who knows what might have happened.”
The nurse cast a discreet glance at Lu Wanqiu and noticed that she kept her head down, silent. Her heart tightened as she lowered her voice. “It was Miss Lu who told me she hasn’t been sleeping well these past few nights—she felt as if someone was in her room at night. So I stayed alert. I didn’t expect…”
Huihui’s face flushed red with anger. “Bastard!”
Outside, the deputy director could no longer stand to listen. The man’s story was clumsy, and now the male orderly, shamed and furious, was accusing Lu Wanqiu of seducing and framing him, claiming the whole thing was her plot.
Please. Did he ever take a look at himself? Miss Lu would have to be out of her mind to try and seduce him. And besides, what on earth would she gain by setting up a nobody like him?
After such an incident, dismissal was inevitable. As a healthcare worker, committing such a breach of professional ethics meant he could forget about ever working in the field again.
The only reason they hadn’t thrown him out yet was because the deputy director and the department head were still debating whether to hand him over to the police.
If they had the choice, of course they’d rather not escalate things. The sanatorium thrived on its sterling reputation, and if this scandal got out, the damage would be immense.
But some things were simply not up to them.
What could be smoothed over in an ordinary hospital was absolutely impossible here—because in this sanatorium, eighty percent of the patients had backgrounds far more powerful than the institution itself.
Once they confirmed the sequence of events, they went to the ward, cautiously studying the unusually silent Lu Wanqiu.
The deputy director spoke first. “Miss Lu, we’ve detained the man. We feel deeply guilty that something like this happened. I assure you, it will never happen again. As compensation, we’ll cover your medical expenses for the year. How… does that sound?”
Her annual medical bills amounted to over a million—quite a hefty price for the sanatorium. But Lu Wanqiu didn’t respond.
The deputy director and the department head exchanged uneasy looks. At last, Lu Wanqiu lifted her eyelids and said, “I don’t feel safe here anymore.”
The deputy director froze. Did she mean to transfer?
She was one of their most important clients. If she left, he would hate to see her go, but in this situation he couldn’t possibly ask her to stay.
He sighed inwardly and was about to say, Even if you leave, we’ll still waive your fees… when he heard her say instead: “Could you switch me to another ward?”
Eh? Not leaving?
The deputy director was overjoyed. “Of course! We still have two private intensive care wards available—you can pick whichever you like!”
Lu Wanqiu tugged at the corner of her lips, forcing a smile. “I don’t want to stay in intensive care anymore. It feels too similar to this place, and I still don’t feel safe.”
The deputy director blinked. “Then… where would you like to stay?”
Lu Wanqiu turned slightly toward the heavy curtains covering the window. She’d heard from Huihui that the view outside was of rolling mountains.
Looking back at him, she said, “I wonder where Bei Lanlan’s mother is staying. Bei Lanlan visited me before—you should know. I’d like to move next to her mother’s ward. That way it’ll be easier for us to visit each other.”
The deputy director had no idea who Bei Lanlan was. He looked blank until the department head quietly explained. Only then did he catch on—though not completely.
Supposedly good friends? Doesn’t look like it… I don’t get it.
He could only say awkwardly, “That wing is for mountain-view wards, not intensive care. We can’t provide the same level of facilities there…”
Lu Wanqiu cut him off. “Then renovate one.”
The deputy director was stunned.
She looked at him, speaking softly but firmly. “Use the money you planned for compensation to renovate. That will do, won’t it?”
“This isn’t according to regulations…”
“And assigning me a molester as my orderly was according to regulations?”
“…”
Since they were clearly in the wrong, the deputy director dared not argue and could only agree. Then Lu Wanqiu added, “Can you transfer Huihui back to me? I don’t feel comfortable without her around.”
Huihui’s eyes immediately grew misty with gratitude.
If they had already agreed to renovate a ward, reassigning a nurse was hardly an issue. And then Lu Wanqiu made a few more requests. The department head, watching from the side, slowly began to realize what was happening.
Lu Wanqiu was reclaiming the people Bei Lanlan had replaced earlier. As for her former privileges—though she didn’t ask for everything back—her visitation limit was raised from twice a week to five times a week. Ordinary patients never received such treatment.
The deputy director grudgingly agreed to each condition. By the end, he even felt a little relieved. At least she hadn’t asked for the impossible, and the sanatorium’s reputation was intact.
As they were about to leave, he asked, “Do you want to press charges?”
He was referring to the orderly, not the sanatorium.
Lu Wanqiu smiled faintly. “No need. Just detain him for a while.”
She believed that even without jail time, the psychological shadow alone would haunt him for quite a while.
Others, not knowing her true thoughts, saw her as magnanimous. Huihui especially felt indignant—thinking that the orderly had gotten off lucky. If it had been anyone else, his life would be finished.

The sanatorium acted swiftly. By the next morning, workers were already moving in and out of the building where Li Jingshu lived.
An early riser, Li Jingshu heard the commotion and stepped outside, only to see them sealing off the room next door.
She heard that a patient who “couldn’t be exposed to sunlight” was moving in, so the ward needed special treatment.
Li Jingshu had lived here for four years and seen all sorts of patients, but this was the first time she’d heard of someone who couldn’t see daylight. Wasn’t that like a vampire?
Of course, she only joked inwardly—never aloud. When she asked a nurse for more details, she learned the patient was still very young, only two or three years older than her Lanlan, and had never left the hospital in her entire life. Her heart couldn’t help but ache for this unseen stranger.
When the day of Lu Wanqiu’s move arrived, she was still thinking about how she might approach Li Jingshu—when Li Jingshu came over herself.
Carrying a plate of fruit, she stood at the door chatting with Huihui. Too far to hear what she was saying, Lu Wanqiu could only see her smiling brightly, her gestures animated—clearly a warm, outgoing person. When she noticed Lu Wanqiu watching, she lowered her raised hand in embarrassment and offered a shy smile.
Lu Wanqiu gazed at her and thought—
Lanlan must looks like her father.
