In the early spring of the third year of the Tianqi era, you were ordered by the Ghost Magistrate of the Jiyin Palace to descend into the human illusion to capture a man’s true heart.
He is the son of the Imperial Tutor, sickly since childhood, yet possessing a refined appearance and a brilliant talent that earned him renown throughout the capital. You intentionally left behind a collection of poems to pique his interest. You watched with a smile as his cheeks flushed slightly, knowing you had already halfway succeeded. From then on, you cooked tea, watched the rain, read poetry, and painted together everything seemed to fall into place naturally.
It was your first mission, and you believed your plan was flawless.
On the day the enemy army arrived at the city gates, under the urging of the Ghost Magistrate, you finally dug out his heart with your own hands. As he collapsed in a pool of blood, his eyelashes trembled from the pain, yet his expression remained calm. His voice was still gentle as he called out to you: “Guan Guan.”
In that moment, you suddenly understood. He had known all along that you were a ghost.
