- Chapter 20 - I Really Want to Go Over and Call Her Sister
Perfect, so heartbreaking. Does anyone want to help her with her pain?
Lu Yu returned shortly after Yu Yan posted the video, carrying a small cake. She said it was afternoon tea from her boss, but she wasn’t fond of sweets, so she brought it back for Young Mistress Yu to try and judge the quality of the cheap cream.
The cake’s packaging looked decent, so Yu Yan agreed to taste it. After just two bites, however, she found it too rich. Lu Yu, unwilling to waste food, finished the rest.
After chatting for a while, Lu Yu went to wash up. Bored, Yu Yan picked up her phone again and opened TikTok to check if anyone had liked her recent video. She was startled by what she saw.
A barrage of notifications flooded her screen, moving so fast they blurred. Unable to make sense of them, she clicked into the “Messages” section. The new follower, like, and share counts all showed “99+”, and there were so many private messages she couldn’t even scroll to the bottom. Yu Yan’s eyes widened. No way…
Am I going viral?
She checked the video and saw it already had over two thousand likes in less than two hours.
Yu Yan knew she was drop-dead gorgeous, but she was still a little overwhelmed. She’d just posted it casually, without any special effort.
Yu Yan checked a few private messages. Some praised her, others wanted to get to know her, some offered to help her with her troubles, and a few were clearly from men based on their writing. She blocked those without a second thought.
I don’t get it, she thought. It’s #lesbian, so why are there still men here?
Lu Yu came out of the shower, towel-drying her hair. Seeing Yu Yan so engrossed in her phone, she asked, “What are you looking at?”
“Come here quick,” Yu Yan said.
Lu Yu walked over, puzzled, and Yu Yan handed her the phone. “The video I posted seems to be going viral.”
Lu Yu watched the video, then looked at Yu Yan, who had already removed her makeup. “When did you post this?” she asked, surprised.
“While you were out.”
Lu Yu wiped her hands, took the phone, and swiped through it a few times. “Sister Yan,” she exclaimed excitedly, “you’re so lucky! A video you just threw up is blowing up! You should really go all-in on becoming a social media star. If you become an influencer, you’ll never have to worry about money again!”
“Live-streaming and selling products is super profitable these days. You can make hundreds of millions in one night—more than your mom earns!”
Yu Yan grimaced. “I’d never do that. It’s too exhausting. You’d lose your voice every night and have to stream every day.”
“Yeah, I heard those live-streaming hosts have to sign contracts with companies and broadcast every night, from seven or eight until dawn. They all shout themselves hoarse, work like crazy, and are under constant pressure to meet sales targets. It’s definitely not for a pampered young mistress like you.”
“Then you could be a beauty streamer,” Lu Yu suggested, knowing what Yu Yan was interested in. “It’s pretty easy. You can stream from anywhere, even lying in bed. No contracts or bosses to answer to. Since you’re a lesbian, just add a ‘le’ tag and you’ll have a built-in audience. With your looks, you could probably get rich women sending you gifts without even saying a word. And with your humor and charm, you could easily win over wealthy older women and watch the gifts roll in.”
“Who knows, you might even meet some big shots. There are plenty of rich women in Yun City even richer than your mom. You could get taken care of and live your best life.”
Lu Yu remembered Yu Yan often saying her dream was to be taken care of by a super-rich businesswoman from Yun City’s business world, so she’d never have to live under Yu Lan’s thumb again.
Yu Yan was immediately intrigued. Hmm, maybe…? she thought.
Big shots? Rich older women? If they were really pretty and gave me lots of money to spend…
Seeing Yu Yan’s growing interest, Lu Yu continued, “You’re not doing anything at home anyway, so why not give it a try? If you don’t like it, you can always stop.”
Lu Yu didn’t really care about money. As long as she had enough to eat, she was content. But she knew Young Mistress Yu was different. Yu Yan only felt happy when she had money to spend, and Lu Yu wanted her to feel a little happier.
“Okay,” Yu Yan said, a slight smile playing on her lips. “I’ll think about it.”
Watching the views on her video steadily climb, Yu Yan felt a rare sense of clarity about her future.
She wouldn’t fail. She was born to be rich and successful. Even if she was temporarily down on her luck, she’d rise to wealth again. With her looks, she could succeed as an influencer, an actress, or even a pop star.
Feeling reassured, she slept soundly.
The next morning, when she checked TikTok, the video had already surpassed 100,000 likes, and her follower count had broken 10,000. Her inbox was flooded with messages, including inquiries from brands and entertainment companies.
Yu Yan felt smugly pleased, but she showed no signs of being overwhelmed or grateful. She didn’t reply to a single message, leisurely getting out of bed.
Lu Yu had the day off today. Instead of ordering takeout, she made breakfast herself: egg drop noodle soup, seasoned just right, with a perfect balance of color, aroma, and flavor. Yu Yan ate with contentment and satisfaction.
At nine in the morning, even though the living room had no windows, the weather was lovely. Lu Yu chose a movie to watch while Yu Yan scrolled through her phone, listening to the background noise of the film and checking her steadily growing data.
This was truly the most pleasant morning she’d had since transmigrating here.
Lu Yu didn’t ask Yu Yan if she’d made up her mind about starting her livestream. After all, Yu Yan would do it if she wanted to, as long as she was in a good mood.
When the movie’s plot reached a dull stretch, Lu Yu turned to Yu Yan and asked, “Want to go out for a bit?”
“Where to?” Yu Yan asked without looking up.
“Where do you want to go?”
“I want to buy all the new Hermès items,” Yu Yan replied.
Lu Yu stared at her, speechless.
Ha ha, very funny.
Seriously though, Yu Yan had been cooped up at home for days. Now that her mood had finally improved a little, she really should get out. Even if she couldn’t afford Hermès just yet.
What should they do?
A sudden idea struck Yu Yan. “Lu Yu, let’s go out for drinks tonight!”
*****
Lu Yu had never been to a bar before and couldn’t tell the difference between a quiet bar, a dance club, or a lesbian bar. Naturally, the responsibility of choosing a place fell to the experienced Yu Yan. Three years had passed, and Yun City had changed dramatically. Some bars had closed, while many new ones had opened. Yu Yan wanted to try a place she hadn’t been to before, partly because she was afraid of running into someone she knew.
The requirements were simple: a lesbian bar with live music and affordable drinks.
She quickly settled on a bar called “Hear.”
There were tons of posts about it on Xiaohongshu, all praising its great atmosphere, reasonably priced drinks, beautiful and talented live singer who could make you cry with her voice, and two incredibly loving and stunningly beautiful owners.
Wow.
This, of course, immediately caught Yu Yan’s attention. She checked the bar’s address. It’s about ten miles away, not too far.
She heard that it opened at 8 PM and stayed open until 4 AM. It was incredibly popular, especially on weekends, and even though the bar was quite large, it could still be hard to get a table sometimes.
Yu Yan planned to arrive around 9 PM.
Lu Yu made dinner again. She went to the supermarket for groceries, and when she got home, Yu Yan was already rummaging through her closet, trying to put together an outfit. But she seemed frustrated, complaining that all her clothes were too cheap and that she didn’t have anything decent to wear out. With no other choice, Lu Yu focused on making the food as delicious as possible, barely managing to appease Young Mistress Yu’s temper.
Soon after dinner, Yu Yan started doing her makeup. Lu Yu sat on the sofa, watching a movie while she waited. Yu Yan occasionally called out to her, asking for help with something or asking if she looked good.
The wound on Yu Yan’s forehead had healed, the scab having fallen off, but the scar hadn’t completely faded yet. The reddish mark was still noticeable at her temple. Since it was newly grown skin, Yu Yan didn’t want to put makeup on it, so she just covered it with her bangs.
“Hey, why don’t I do your makeup too?” Yu Yan asked casually, glancing at Lu Yu as she applied eyeliner in the mirror. “It’s too plain to go to a bar without any makeup.”
“No thanks,” Lu Yu replied. “I’m not used to it.”
Lu Yu’s style was as simple and fresh as her personality: blue wide-leg jeans, a white T-shirt, and a knitted cardigan. Her long hair was tied into a low ponytail with a hair tie, and her bangs, which hadn’t been trimmed in ages, framed her forehead. Unlike Yu Yan, Lu Yu had never been one for dressing up. While Yu Yan started wearing makeup in high school, Lu Yu always went bare-faced. Yet her fair complexion and striking features gave her a naturally refined look; makeup would only make her look gaudy.
Yu Yan glanced at her. “That works. You look fine as you are.”
Yu Yan rummaged through Lu Yu’s closet repeatedly, finally settling on a white miniskirt after Lu Yu’s encouragement (or rather, gentle prodding). It was late October, and Yun City was already experiencing the early chill of autumn. Yu Yan paired the skirt with a matching fleece jacket and nude-colored stockings.
By the time they left, it was dark. This was Yu Yan’s first time stepping outside since her arrival over ten days ago, and she felt a bit disoriented facing the wide, well-lit streets outside the apartment. Lu Yu was about to introduce her to something even more unfamiliar: riding the subway.
“You’re so stingy,” Yu Yan grumbled.
Lu Yu replied casually, “Taxis are expensive in Yun City. Do you want a business-class car with a female driver? That would cost us a whole day’s worth of meals.”
Yu Yan pinched Lu Yu fiercely.
Despite her grumbling, Yu Yan dutifully followed Lu Yu onto the subway. The app was already installed on her phone, which showed she’d ridden it plenty of times before.
It was hard to imagine.
The station near Lu Yu’s home was relatively quiet, so they got seats. But when they switched to another line, it became incredibly crowded. Lu Yu pulled Yu Yan into a corner, keeping her away from the crush of people.
Standing over 170 centimeters tall, Lu Yu made Yu Yan feel safe and protected. Back in school, classmates often teased Lu Yu about being the Young Mistress’s bodyguard.
In truth, Lu Yu had been a Young Mistress herself back then, though she kept a low profile. Yu Yan suddenly realized that when Lu Yu had run away from home, she’d pitied her, thinking she’d never live a life of luxury again. Now, she herself had fallen to the same fate.
Taking the subway to a bar felt so embarrassing.
Just as the online reviews said, Hear was incredibly popular. It was barely past eight, and the live music hadn’t even started yet, but most of the seats were already taken. Yu Yan looked around. The place was stylishly decorated with a good atmosphere, and there was a sign prohibiting men from entering. Perfect.
Yu Yan chose a booth near the stage. As soon as they sat down, a server approached to take their order and inform them about the booth fee.
“How much is it?” Lu Yu asked.
The server smiled. “The booth fee is 300, and the minimum spend is 1800.”
Wow, that’s really cheap, Yu Yan thought, completely unfazed. Her muscle memory kicked in, and she immediately started browsing the drink menu. Lu Yu, however, looked hesitant, her expression a mix of awkwardness and reluctance. “Uh…”
Three women were seated at the next table. One of them, noticing Lu Yu’s discomfort, turned around and warmly offered, “You can join us! We’re only three, and there are three empty seats.”
The server chimed in with a smile, “Yes, if there are only two of you, sharing a table would be better.”
“Should we join them?” Lu Yu asked, turning to Yu Yan. Yu Yan glanced at the woman who had invited them, a glamorous blonde with heavy makeup, clearly a social butterfly who knew how to work a crowd. Drinking and chatting with her would definitely be fun, she thought, but she still felt annoyed. The source of her irritation wasn’t the idea of sharing a table itself, but the fact that someone else had noticed their empty pockets and offered the arrangement first.
Yu Yan was so embarrassed she wanted to vanish on the spot.
“Come on, let’s go share a table,” Lu Yu said, tugging her over to the next table.
“…Hello, everyone.”
Despite her initial annoyance, Yu Yan forced a sweet smile and greeted the three women across from them.
“Hey there, ladies! Wow, you two are gorgeous!” The blonde woman replied cheerfully, glancing between Yu Yan and Lu Yu before her gaze settled on Yu Yan’s face.
“You’re stunning too, so cool!” Yu Yan replied, noticing the woman’s nose, lip, and eyebrow piercings. Her makeup was dark and ghostly, yet her personality was surprisingly sunny.
She was a natural at livening up the atmosphere. The other two women were quieter, both with shoulder-length bobs that immediately suggested their sexual orientation.
Yu Yan and Lu Yu each ordered a drink. Though Lu Yu rarely went to bars, she kept liquor at home and occasionally enjoyed a small glass, so her alcohol tolerance was about the same as Yu Yan’s.
Holding her wine glass, Yu Yan chatted with the woman across from her. The blonde, Jiang Xuan, was still a college student and a regular at Hear. Knowing it was Yu Yan’s first time here, she said, “You picked the right place! It’s never boring here. The music starts in about ten minutes, and tons of people will show up. So many beautiful women, you won’t know where to look first!”
Jiang Xuan mentioned she was in a band and had auditioned here before, but they didn’t make the cut. She grumbled about the owners’ high standards. “I can sing ballads just fine, not just rock. Why wasn’t that good enough?”
Despite her frustration, she kept coming back to spend money. “Well,” Yu Yan thought, “we’re kindred spirits. A woman’s beauty can make me forgive anything.”
“Are they really that gorgeous?” Yu Yan asked, curious. “I didn’t see any photos of them when I was looking up reviews.”
“Totally! But they don’t let people take pictures and post them online anymore, so you probably won’t find any.”
“Will they be here tonight?”
“No idea. There’s been no word in the group chat. If they don’t show up, no one knows if they’re coming. It’s all luck. They might not be here now, but they could show up later.”
“Oh, I see,” Yu Yan said. “That sounds so mysterious.”
“Hahaha, it does have a bit of that vibe, doesn’t it? But actually, they’re both really approachable. One of them is super gentle and kind—she listens intently to everything you say. The other one seems a bit aloof at first, but she’s not bad at all.”
One super gentle, the other aloof but not bad? Yu Yan couldn’t quite picture it. So far, her only association with gentleness was Fu Yunqing, and the thought immediately reminded her that they were over, a pain so sharp she didn’t dare dwell on it.
So she forced herself to focus on Jiang Xuan’s animated stories about the two bosses’ sweet moments at the bar. Jiang Xuan said they were practically the embodiment of “Puppy-Elder Sister” romance. Rumor had it that once, while one of them was calculating the day’s earnings at the counter, the other stood beside her, watching. She let her free hand stroke her face as she worked, like petting a bored puppy for amusement. The one being petted seemed to relish the attention, waiting until the calculations were done before leaning in for a kiss. But the other one refused, settling instead for a lingering sniff.
“The one who got touched works out, so she’s got an amazing body. Even on her own, she’s got this super cool, confident vibe, but around the other woman, she’s so obedient. When they stand together, the tension between them is electric.”
Yu Yan took a sip of her drink, mentally exclaiming, “Wow!”
At that moment, the “Puppy-Elder Sister” Jiang Xuan had been talking about remained a blurry figure in Yu Yan’s mind. But who could deny Yu Yan’s luck? The woman rarely visited the shop, yet Yu Yan had actually run into her.
It was hard to say who spotted her first. Jiang Xuan glanced toward the stairs and excitedly urged Yu Yan to look. “Look, look! She’s here! The one in the long dress with the blazer!”
Yu Yan quickly widened her eyes and looked over. A woman in a black-and-gold V-neck dress, draped with a blazer, descended the stairs in high heels.
Her steps were slow, graceful, and light. She carried a purse in one hand and held the railing with the other. She was slender, her dark hair loose, and her skin pale. She turned her head to speak to a manager-like woman walking beside her.
Yu Yan couldn’t tell if she was wearing makeup, but she thought she was beautiful. Her gentle smile was warm and kind, with no hint of aggression. She seemed delicate, yet radiated an unspoken, mysterious power that made her seem unfathomable.
Despite her gentle demeanor, she had the aura of a femme fatale.
So beautiful…
She really looks like Master…
The woman walked behind the bar to continue her conversation with the manager. Yu Yan stared, unable to tear her gaze away.
“What do you think? Isn’t she gorgeous?” Jiang Xuan asked excitedly.
Yu Yan opened her mouth, then closed it again. “She’s breathtaking…”
Jiang Xuan said her name was Ran Ling.
Even her name is beautiful.
Yu Yan understood why the other woman had become Ran Ling’s devoted follower. With just one glance, she had already become her little puppy.
She tugged at Lu Yu’s wrist, shaking it repeatedly. Lu Yu asked what she wanted.
Yu Yan’s eyes sparkled as she fidgeted. “I really want to go over and call her ‘Sister’… I really, really do…”
Yu Yan thought that if Ran Ling smiled at her, she was certain that the very act would steal her soul and make her forget her own name.
