- Chapter 14 - A Kiss
Gradually, Yu Yan began to sweat. When her temperature was measured again, the fever had broken slightly. Fu Yunqing relaxed a fraction, wiped the sweat from the girl’s brow, closed her book, and lay down beside her for a short nap.
Two hours later, Fu Yunqing woke up feeling uncomfortably hot. At some point, Yu Yan had pressed her body against Fu’s, her skin burning like a furnace.
Fu looked down to see Yu Yan’s brow furrowed in pain, her breathing heavy and ragged, and her skin a deep, feverish red. Fu reached for the thermometer 39.8°C. Nearly 40°C. Her heart skipped a beat in alarm.
How could it have spiked so high?
“Yan Yan?” Fu leaned over and patted the girl’s cheek. Yu Yan opened her eyes a crack, only to curl into a ball again.
“My head hurts…”
Fu got out of bed, dialing the doctor with one hand while getting a glass of warm water with the other.
It would take a while for the doctor to arrive. Yu Yan’s lips were dry and peeling, but she was in too much pain to even sit up to drink.
“It hurts…”
Seeing the severity of the fever, the estate’s doctor decided not to waste time. She needed a fever-reducing injection administered in the hip. Yu Yan, startled into consciousness, immediately protested with everything she had.
“This is the fastest method we have right now,” the female doctor told Fu Yunqing.
Fu Yunqing looked at the trembling girl, her heart aching. “It won’t hurt after the shot, okay?”
“Be good.”
“…”
Fu sat on the edge of the bed, pulling Yu Yan into her lap so the girl could hide her face in Fu’s embrace. The doctor stood at the foot of the bed and pulled down the waistband of Yu Yan’s pajamas.
With half of her backside exposed and a long, thick needle aimed and ready, Yu Yan was a nervous wreck. She buried her face in Fu’s chest, her arms locked around the older woman’s waist. Fu Yunqing watched the doctor’s movements, stroking Yu Yan’s head and whispering soft, distracting words in her ear.
The needle went in fast, accurately, and ruthlessly. Before Yu Yan could even get two wails out, it was over.
“…”
As the doctor packed her bag, Yu Yan remained motionless in Fu Yunqing’s arms. She felt like she’d lost every ounce of dignity she had. She never imagined that the woman she liked would one day have to witness her getting a shot in the rear.
Actually, Fu Yunqing had never imagined it either. It felt strangely… parental.
“…Alright, go to sleep.”

The next time Yu Yan woke up, it was 10:00 AM. The sunlight was piercing. The splitting headache had subsided, though she still felt heavy and dull.
Before she could fully open her eyes, she felt a cool hand on her forehead.
“Still a low-grade fever,” Fu Yunqing’s voice said. “Are you still uncomfortable?”
“Mhm… a little.” Yu Yan’s voice was raspier than the day before.
A maid brought breakfast, and Yu Yan sat up to try and eat. However, her appetite was gone; she felt nauseous after just two bites and refused to eat more. She drifted back into a restless, heated dream, waking again in the afternoon feeling like she’d been cooked in a pot.
Staring at the ceiling, she finally felt like the worst was over. She checked her phone.
A mountain of messages awaited her, but she scrolled down to find one from
Fu Yunqing: [Let me know when you wake up.]
Sister Fu… Yu Yan ignored everyone else and replied:
[I’m awake!][Sticker: Puppy wagging tail]
A few minutes later, Fu Yunqing pushed the door open, followed by a maid with a tray. Without a word, Fu walked to the bed and checked her forehead. Yu Yan let her, acting like a perfect patient.
“Still hurting?” Fu asked.
“My butt hurts,” Yu Yan rasped.
Fu Yunqing’s expression froze for a second. Yu Yan immediately regretted it. What am I doing? Is she going to check it for me? Fortunately, Fu just soothed her: “It’ll stop in a couple of days.”
To hide her embarrassment, Yu Yan busied herself with her phone. Seeing her scrolling, Fu didn’t make her get out of bed. She took the bowl of porridge and sat on the edge of the mattress. “Try to eat a little. You haven’t had anything since last night.”
Yu Yan’s eyes were still red and swollen. She hummed an answer while replying to a text, but when she glanced up, a spoonful of porridge was already at her lips. She blinked in surprise, ate it, and looked up at Fu.
She was genuinely shocked that Fu Yunqing was feeding her by hand. She felt incredibly pampered and realized she had been all night.
Fu Yunqing was still in her nightgown, her face completely bare of makeup. Her skin was flawless and pale. Without her usual sharp “ice queen” aura, she looked softer, gentler, like a white rose blooming in winter.
But her eyes were weary. Yu Yan realized she probably hadn’t slept a wink.
“Are you well enough to play on your phone? Does your head still hurt?” Fu asked, bringing another spoonful to her lips.
Yu Yan was torn. Part of her felt guilty and wanted Fu to go rest; the other part was completely powerless against this version of Fu Yunqing, the one who was tired yet infinitely patient and gentle.
Sister Fu is so good to me. Sister Fu is so beautiful. Sister Fu is so charming. She makes me want to…
“It doesn’t hurt anymore…” Yu Yan replied dizzily.
“That’s good.”
Yu Yan put her phone down and focused on being fed. The pork porridge was warm and comforting, but half a bowl was her limit.
After wiping her mouth with a tissue, Yu Yan felt Fu’s hand on her forehead again. She’s so careful, Yu Yan thought. She’s more of a ‘mom’ than my own mom.
But Fu Yunqing thought Yu Yan was just being a bit dazed from the fever. She had no idea what the girl was plotting.
“Sister Fu…”
“Mhm?”
Yu Yan straightened her back and took Fu’s hand. “Thank you for taking care of me.”
Fu Yunqing hesitated for a moment, then smiled. “You’re welcome.”
“Did you stay up all night?” Yu Yan asked softly. “You’ve been looking after me for a full day and night… You need to go back and rest.”
“Alright.”
*****
The conversation seemed over, but Yu Yan didn’t let go of her hand. Her eyes were darting around, her body tense as if she were preparing for something big.
Fu Yunqing, sensing the change in atmosphere, didn’t pull away. She watched Yu Yan with a mix of curiosity and lazy exhaustion.
It was unfair how beautiful she looked at that moment. One look was enough to make Yu Yan willing to endure ten thousand more shots if it meant staying in this room.
Unable to hide her infatuation any longer, Yu Yan leaned in. With a soft “chu” sound, she pressed a light kiss onto Fu Yunqing’s cheek.
