- On Her Wedding Night, She Transmigrated To The Aftermath Of Her Divorce
- Chapter 10 - Softening at the Mistaken Sister
Only when the girl beneath her palm had stilled, her eyelashes no longer trembling like gossamer, did Fu Yunqing finally remove her hand.
She lay quietly with her eyes closed, her cheeks flushed, her breathing slightly heavy. Fu Yunqing wasn’t sure if she was already asleep.
She touched Yu Yan’s cheek; it felt even warmer than before. Worried she might be suffocating, Fu Yunqing lowered the car window a crack to let in a bit of cool air. The girl in her arms frowned, perhaps uncomfortable or disturbed by the noise.
Just as Fu Yunqing was about to say something, Yu Yan suddenly curled up and turned over, lying on her side with her face buried in Fu Yunqing’s lap. Only her ears peeked out from the cocoon she had created.
“You…” Fu Yunqing began, lowering her head. “Why do you like it like this so much? Aren’t you stuffy? Can’t you sit up?”
Yu Yan remained silent, stubbornly refusing to budge.
Fu Yunqing felt uneasy and hot. She turned her face toward the window and lowered it further. Her expression was strained as she stared out into the night, lost in thought. After a moment, she resignedly turned back and lowered her gaze.
Gradually, Yu Yan felt the tension in Fu Yunqing’s body begin to relax.
Her palm rested protectively against Yu Yan’s neck, as if shielding her from the car’s jolts.
Happy moments always seem so fleeting.
Yu Yan wasn’t ready to wake up when they arrived. Fu Yunqing nudged her awake, and she propped herself up, nuzzling against Sister Fu’s shoulder and humming contentedly. She knew it would make Sister Fu’s neck itch, but she couldn’t help herself.
Fu Yunqing said nothing, enduring the ticklish sensation on her neck as it flushed red. Her other arm gently wrapped around Yu Yan’s waist, just as before, without reprimanding her.
Yu Yan thought, Sister Fu is so indulgent, so patient with me.
“Be careful.”
After getting out of the car, Yu Yan could barely stand. Fu Yunqing supported her as they entered the elevator. As the elevator ascended, Yu Yan leaned against her shoulder, her teary, reddened eyes half-lidded, the pose unbearably intimate and suggestive.
Will Sister Fu take me back to my room? she wondered. If I’m drunk beyond recognition, will she stay to look after me?
Yu Yan desperately wanted that.
So she drank even more, stumbling out of the elevator so unsteadily that Fu Yunqing’s gaze kept returning to her.
“You can’t hold your liquor, yet you drank so much,” Fu Yunqing chided. She’d heard Yu Yan often went to bars and assumed she was a heavy drinker.
“What would you do if you were alone and drank yourself into this state?”
Fu Yunqing was actually scolding her, but Yu Yan didn’t feel anger or impatience in her tone—only genuine concern. Yu Yan secretly savored this feeling.
So Fu Yunqing really cares that much about me?
Yu Yan didn’t argue back, not even a little. After Fu Yunqing finished speaking, she mumbled, “I was wrong…”
Perhaps surprised that Yu Yan would admit her mistake, Fu Yunqing paused before softly saying, “Alright.”
How can a simple apology make her so soft-hearted? Yu Yan’s eyes curved slightly.
If everything went as planned, Fu Yunqing would escort her back to her room. In that private space, Sister Fu would take care of her. If Yu Yan acted a little spoiled, Sister Fu might even stay to keep her company… maybe even stay the night?
Yu Yan secretly plotted.
But just as things were going smoothly, an unexpected interruption occurred.
Yu Yan was looking down, searching for her room keycard, when she bumped into Yu Lan, who happened to be leaving. Meeting her mother’s gaze, Yu Yan felt the sky collapsing around her.
“How did you get so drunk?” Yu Lan frowned. “Yunqing? What happened?”
Fu Yunqing replied, “I took her out earlier. She seemed happy and just drank a little too much at the bar.”
Yu Lan couldn’t believe Fu Yunqing had agreed to keep Yu Yan company. “I’m so grateful,” she said. “She’s never been very obedient.”
Fu Yunqing smiled. “It wasn’t any trouble at all. She was very well-behaved.”
“As long as it wasn’t too much trouble, I can take her back to her room now.”
“…”
“Let’s go home. You need a proper bath and a good night’s sleep. We have things to do tomorrow, so don’t delay us.” Yu Lan glared at Yu Yan, and Fu Yunqing naturally handed her over to her mother.
“Okay…” Yu Yan replied reluctantly, casting one last lingering glance at Fu Yunqing. “Goodnight, Sister Fu.”
Fu Yunqing looked back at her. “… Goodnight.”
Yu Yan had tried to act spoiled, thinking she was drunk, but she’d run into Yu Lan, who was impossible to get around. That left her a little annoyed. Still, there was a faint trace of inexplicable happiness in her heart.
Because she thought she saw something in Fu Yunqing’s elegant, inscrutable eyes—something like lingering concern, or perhaps reluctance.
She knew that this abrupt parting would leave more than just her feeling unhappy.
******
The sound of the door closing was like a switch. In front of Yu Lan, Yu Yan dropped all pretense. She stood steadily, her eyes no longer pleading. She found her own clothes and went into the bathroom. Yu Lan saw all this but said nothing.
“Go to sleep early,” Yu Lan urged.
Yu Yan didn’t respond.
After showering, Yu Yan was mostly sober. Though still a little dizzy, she wasn’t so dazed she’d fall asleep immediately. In truth, she’d been pretending to be drunk the whole time.
Lying on the bed, she opened her phone, curious to see if Fu Yunqing had texted her.
Sure enough, Fu Yunqing had left a message three minutes earlier:
[Go to sleep early.]
Waaah, Yu Yan texted back. [ My mom left. ] [ It’s all her fault. ]
It was all her fault for ruining Yu Yan’s plans. She doesn’t care about me at all. Even when I’m upset, she doesn’t care.
She’d slightly maligned Yu Lan, but the groundwork was laid.
Before Fu Yunqing could respond, Yu Yan pressed her advantage: [ I really want to sleep in Sister Fu’s room. ]
Yu Yan sent the emoji: [ Cat carrying a suitcase, shouting: “Wifey, I’m here!” ]
What was Fu Yunqing thinking?
Typing… flashed at the top of the chat window for a long time before disappearing. After a while, Fu Yunqing replied: Where does it hurt?
[I feel dizzy.]
[Have you taken a shower yet?]
[I’ve showered and smell clean, not a trace of alcohol.]
[Then cover yourself up and go to sleep.]
[Cover up and go to sleep?]
Did Fu Yunqing really mean that? Yu Yan felt so frustrated!
[ But I’m already at Sister Fu’s door! ] In her stubbornness, Yu Yan accidentally sent the message.
Actually, she hadn’t moved. She was just messing around.
When Fu Yunqing stopped replying, the prankster started feeling a little guilty. Could Fu Yunqing actually believe that? Yu Yan was just spouting nonsense, as usual.
If she really had to go to Fu Yunqing’s room, she wouldn’t be so carefree now. She might even be shy. Truthfully, she wasn’t ready to be alone in a room with Fu Yunqing yet.
Yu Yan suddenly regretted it and wanted to take it back, but Fu Yunqing had already seen it. What would it mean to take it back now?
Yu Yan glanced at the door, hesitating, wondering if she should actually go.
While she was frozen in uncertainty, Fu Yunqing, who had been silent for almost two minutes, finally replied:
[Liar.]
Yu Yan’s heart clenched.
