- Chapter 30 - "Forget them! Let's go eat."
After their indescribable moments of bliss, neither Jiang Zhenmian nor Gu Zhibai woke up early the next morning, a rare occurrence for both of them.
As Jiang Zhenmian stirred from her dream, before her eyes even opened, the sensation of warmth and softness against her skin registered in her mind. It felt like velvet, smooth and silky, pressed tightly against her. Having lived alone for years, she startled awake, but quickly regained her composure, remembering the events of the previous night.
Jiang Zhenmian turned sideways, wrapping herself around Gu Zhibai like a koala, burying her face in the crook of Gu Zhibai’s neck, quietly inhaling the sweet citrus scent.
Her movements were slight, but Gu Zhibai, who had also slept alone for years, had only slept so soundly the night before due to sheer exhaustion. The moment Jiang Zhenmian stirred, Gu Zhibai woke up.
Her limbs ached, and a lingering unfamiliar sensation lingered in her body. Overwhelmed by lethargy, she didn’t want to get up. She kept her eyes closed and remained motionless, lying there lazily.
Yet the body pressed against hers grew increasingly warm, and a pheromone scent, newly familiar yet deeply familiar, gradually intensified, as if a rain-soaked forest had suddenly descended into the room.
Gu Zhibai had an excellent memory. She vividly recalled being tossed and turned under the damp, humid air. The moment that scent appeared, her eyes snapped open. She carefully withdrew her arm from beneath Jiang Zhenmian, nudged her shoulder, and said in a slightly hoarse voice, “I need to get up.”
“It’s still early. Why not sleep a little longer?” Jiang Zhenmian didn’t move, remaining in the same position. Her voice was relaxed and unhurried, tinged with lingering drowsiness.
“I’m hungry. I want breakfast,” Gu Zhibai replied.
Jiang Zhenmian propped herself up slightly, her expression thoughtful as she considered the matter. After a moment, she rolled over and sat up. “Alright.”
Gu Zhibai quickly got out of bed and moved to the edge. As soon as she stood, a sharp ache shot through her thighs, forcing her to sit back down. She hastily grabbed the bedside table for support, her hand brushing against something rough and uneven.
Her gaze shifted downward, and she saw the black leather collar lying quietly on the table.
As the root cause of all this trouble, it seemed rather insignificant. Yet Gu Zhibai’s face slowly flushed crimson.
After forcing herself to shower, she collapsed into bed, her pajamas still in the closet some distance away.
Though the curtains blocked the harsh sunlight, the soft glow made it clear it was broad daylight. The thought of walking to the closet in her natural state, with Jiang Zhenmian watching, filled Gu Zhibai with unbearable shame.
But there was only one blanket on the bed. If she wrapped herself in it, Jiang Zhenmian would be exposed.
Draped in a corner of the blanket, Gu Zhibai sank into a deep dilemma.
Jiang Zhenmian wrapped her arms around Gu Zhibai from behind, resting her chin on her shoulder. “Sister, why are you still sitting here?” she asked, her voice tinged with concern. “Did you get up too quickly and feel dizzy?”
As Jiang Zhenmian drew closer, it felt like the humid air of an entire forest had rushed in, the crisp scent of leaves and the earthy bitterness of soil enveloping Gu Zhibai’s senses. The pheromones showed no signs of fading. Having experienced Jiang Zhenmian’s volatile nature before, Gu Zhibai tensed, desperate to escape this suffocating intimacy.
She really didn’t want to go through that again so early in the morning.
Gu Zhibai glanced at the wardrobe across the room and said awkwardly, “I’m not wearing pajamas…”
“Why don’t you go get some? Ah…” Jiang Zhenmian trailed off, a realization dawning on her face. She chuckled softly. “Sister’s feeling unwell. It’s all my fault.”
She gently pecked a kiss beneath Gu Zhibai’s ear. “I’ll go get them for you.”
With that, she threw back the covers and walked confidently to the wardrobe. She opened it, rummaged through the clothes, and pulled out a light blue nightgown. Turning back, she asked, “Sister, how about this one?”
Gu Zhibai felt her gaze had nowhere to settle. Yet a voice in her mind urged, It’s not like you haven’t seen her before. Why be shy? She nodded distractedly. “That’ll do. Grab a set for yourself too.”
To be honest, Jiang Zhenmian’s figure was perfectly proportioned: long limbs, a flat stomach, no visible muscle but a graceful physique, and porcelain-white skin. She could easily be a model.
“Then I’ll wear this green set,” Jiang Zhenmian said, pulling out a matching pajama set.
Gu Zhibai quickly changed into her pajamas and awkwardly walked to the closet, retrieving a set of underwear. “…I need to change.”
Jiang Zhenmian understood her unspoken words perfectly. A mild desire flowed through Gu Zhibai’s heart, but it was easily suppressed.
“Okay, I’ll go wash up in my room. See you in a bit,” Jiang Zhenmian said smoothly.
Gu Zhibai sighed in relief, rubbing her aching lower back. As her mistress left, the pheromone scent gradually dissipated. By the time they met downstairs again, Jiang Zhenmian had completely regained her composure.
Gu Zhibai could only detect the scent of laundry detergent on her, which instantly eased her anxiety.
She was truly frightened.
Is this what young people are like?
The housekeeper, seeing they were still asleep, had prepared breakfast and left. Steaming buns warmed in the pot, and freshly squeezed soy milk waited. Jiang Zhenmian carried everything to the table, and the two enjoyed a delicious meal together.
Today was a day for pure rest. Gu Zhibai didn’t feel like working; she just wanted to relax.
So, what should we do?
“How about watching a movie? Or a TV series? Sister, is there anything you’ve been meaning to watch but haven’t gotten around to?” Jiang Zhenmian asked.
She had never actually seen Gu Zhibai watch such things.
“I have a recommendation!” the System suddenly chimed in. “Watch Resident Evil!”
Jiang Zhenmian: “Huh? You like zombies?”
System: “Or Alien, Dune, Artificial Intelligence, Westworld.”
Jiang Zhenmian: “Oh, sci-fi horror. So that’s your type.”
System: “I’ve been studying human psychology recently and discovered that the complexities of human nature become most apparent when facing disaster.”
So your method of studying human psychology is watching movies? And you just happen to like stories about technology rebelling against humanity.
Jiang Zhenmian: “Then why not Jurassic World? Are dinosaurs not scary enough?”
“Let’s just watch a horror movie,” Gu Zhibai suddenly said. “Pick the scariest one.”
Jiang Zhenmian: ?
Ye Wanwan had been feeling troubled lately. From childhood, her life had been remarkably smooth. Though she grew up without a father, her mother showered her with abundant love.
While their family savings weren’t vast, they owned two rental properties. Her mother always ensured Wanwan never lacked for anything, and her charming looks and cheerful personality meant she never lacked for friends.
She was practically a girl who had been raised in a honey pot.
But since she started dating Gu Zhiyao, Ye Wanwan suddenly understood the taste of bitterness.
She loved Gu Zhiyao, this handsome, domineering, and somewhat unreasonable man.
Gu Zhiyao wasn’t one to swallow his pride. Whenever they argued, she always had to be the first to apologize. In return, Gu Zhiyao would shower her with lavish gifts.
In Ye Wanwan’s heart, these were his awkward ways of apologizing.
But their recent fight, just a few days ago, had been particularly severe.
It started when Gu Zhiyao wanted to take her to a concert in a neighboring city. The headliner was a female singer Ye Wanwan adored.
It was Ye Wanwan’s first time sitting in the front row at a concert, and she even got to shake hands with her idol and get an autograph. She was so thrilled that she couldn’t contain her excitement on the way back to the hotel that night, chattering endlessly to Gu Zhiyao.
Gu Zhiyao had booked only one suite, meaning they would have to share a bed. But Ye Wanwan wasn’t worried about him trying anything. He had promised never to touch her without her consent.
So after washing up, Ye Wanwan lay in his arms, not resisting when he pinned her down and kissed her passionately. In fact, she even responded eagerly.
But as the kisses deepened, things took a turn. Gu Zhiyao’s actions grew bolder, his hands becoming increasingly restless, venturing into very private places.
Ye Wanwan, her face flushed, gently pushed against his chest. “We shouldn’t be doing this,” she whispered.
Gu Zhiyao pressed his lips fiercely against hers, kissing her until she felt dizzy. His breathing was heavy, thick with suppressed desire. “Wanwan, I can’t hold back any longer.”
Ye Wanwan’s cheeks burned, her mind swimming. But she remembered her mother’s warning: Never do this. It will make your partner think you’re easy.
Ye Wanwan kept pushing Gu Zhiyao away. “No, Zhiyao, we can’t do this.”
Gu Zhiyao’s eyes reddened. “Why? Are you really that unwilling?”
Ye Wanwan quickly explained, “It’s not that. It’s just… I don’t want to be seen as a casual woman. For me, intimacy has to wait until after marriage.”
Gu Zhiyao grew angry, though Ye Wanwan couldn’t understand why.
“Are you playing games with me?” he demanded. “If you didn’t want this, why did you even share a bed with me? Isn’t this whole ‘playing hard to get’ act a little late?”
His words stunned Ye Wanwan. Tears welled up in her eyes. “I’m not… You promised you wouldn’t touch me. Aren’t you the one breaking your word?”
Frustration from his unfulfilled desire made Gu Zhiyao’s temper flare. The sound of her sniffling only irritated him further. He sneered, “Just an ordinary woman with delusions of grandeur. Pretending to be virtuous, but all you really want is to marry into the Gu family. Isn’t that the truth?”
Ye Wanwan’s eyes widened in disbelief. She couldn’t believe the man she loved could say such cruel things, twisting her words and hurting her so deeply.
Tears welled up in her eyes instantly. She slapped Gu Zhiyao across the face, and before he could react, she threw on her clothes, grabbed her phone, and fled the hotel.
Lost in the unfamiliar city streets, Ye Wanwan felt like her heart had been torn open. She sat alone on a park bench, the memory of what had just happened bringing fresh tears to her eyes.
“What’s wrong, miss? Why are you crying all alone?”
A gentle voice startled her. Ye Wanwan looked up to see a kind-looking young man gazing at her with genuine concern.
“I… I had a fight with my boyfriend,” she choked out.
“If you don’t mind, you can tell me about it. Sometimes talking about what’s bothering you can make things feel a little better,” the young man said softly, his eyes full of warmth.
Ye Wanwan, overwhelmed by his kindness, felt her hurt swell. She didn’t know why, but she found herself pouring out the whole story.
When she finished, he didn’t offer any judgment. He simply said he admired her for standing up for herself, that there was nothing wrong with a woman who valued her self-respect. Then he helped her find a place to stay, so she wouldn’t have to spend the night on the streets.
His name was Bai Qing, a name as gentle as his demeanor.
They exchanged contact information, and Bai Qing drove Ye Wanwan home. During their conversation, she learned he was an ambitious young entrepreneur who had traveled to the neighboring city for a business meeting.
Bai Qing felt completely different from Gu Zhiyao. He was kind, considerate, and always spoke calmly, taking care to consider her feelings and respect her choices. Unlike Gu Zhiyao, who domineeringly controlled every aspect of her life.
Since their unpleasant parting three days ago, they hadn’t spoken a word. Ye Wanwan felt a mix of bitterness and anger. Couldn’t Gu Zhiyao just swallow his pride and apologize?
Bai Qing suggested taking her out to clear her mind, leading her to a private restaurant. He said that enjoying some good food might lift her spirits.
Unexpectedly, they ran into Gu Zhiyao at the entrance. He was accompanied by a flamboyant woman in a bright red miniskirt, her figure curvaceous and provocative. She clung to him seductively, her silvery laughter ringing out as they spoke.
Ye Wanwan’s face flushed crimson with rage, her words tumbling out in a jumble. “You! Who is she?”
Gu Zhiyao initially looked guilty, but his confidence returned when he saw Bai Qing. “What? You’re allowed to find someone, but I’m not?”
He lowered his head and kissed the red-dressed woman on the cheek. “You don’t need me to introduce her, do you? If you won’t let me touch you, I’ll find someone who will.”
The glamorous woman giggled coyly. “Oh, Young Master Gu, there are so many people around~”
Rage and heartbreak flooded Ye Wanwan’s heart. Tears streaming down her face, she screamed, “Gu Zhiyao, you bastard! I’ve been waiting for you to come find me. If you didn’t want to, fine, but to actually… to actually find another woman? What am I to you? Just a fleeting plaything?”
“We’re over!” she sobbed, then turned and ran.
Bai Qing frowned. “We have nothing between us,” he said to Gu Zhiyao. “You’ve misunderstood.”
He quickly explained how they’d met. As Gu Zhiyao’s face stiffened, Bai Qing added coldly, “Wanwan is a good girl. Someone like you doesn’t deserve her.”
With that, he chased after Ye Wanwan.
The red-dressed woman blinked, her voice sweet. “Young Master Gu, if you’re busy tonight, we can reschedule.”
Gu Zhiyao’s heart churned with regret and fury. Watching the pair bickering across the street, the guilt he’d briefly felt vanished completely.
So much for “it’s nothing.” What is this, then? Is she putting on a show just to spite me?
If Ye Wanwan were truly as pure and virtuous as she claims, why is she getting so close to another man? Laughing and chatting with him, clearly not giving me a second thought.
I’m a man. It’s natural to have desires. Among all the women I’ve been with, none of them have ever been this coy.
For Ye Wanwan, I’ve been abstinent for months. She’s accepted so many gifts from me, yet she won’t even let me touch her.
Gu Zhiyao grew increasingly agitated. He grabbed the red-dressed woman by the waist. “Forget them! Let’s go eat.”
