- Chapter 29 - Just a Little Fox (29) A Blow No Less Than.
After staying with the Fox Clan for another three days, they prepared to set off back to Chengning.
The benefit of having a powerful Great Demon as a boyfriend was that there was no need to lift a finger for the luggage. With a simple wave of Shi Yan’s sleeve, everything was collected inside; when released back at home, every item would be exactly as it was.
Ji Shijin felt a bit reluctant to leave. It just so happened that on the day before their departure, the little white fox came to visit again. He had tried to sneak over several times before, but Shi Yan had laid down such a massive array that the little fox, lacking in skill, had not dared to approach, running away after only a distant glance.
This time, he was testing his luck again, and he actually managed to see Ji Shijin.
“Wu. Old Ancestor is leaving, and are you leaving too?” The little white fox held his precious ball in his mouth, looking at Ji Shijin with eyes that suggested he was looking at a heartbreaker.
They had clearly promised to play ball together last time.
Ji Shijin’s heart softened at that gaze. Thinking that he could not be a person who broke his word, he gave in to the little fox’s persistent pestering and agreed to play with him for the entire day.
The human and the fox played joyfully in front of the small cottage. Shi Yan leaned against the doorframe with his arms crossed, watching them in silence.
Engrossed in his game with the little fox, Ji Shijin completely failed to notice the gaze of the “big fox” behind him, which was gradually becoming dark and profound.
The consequence of this was that under the cover of night, Ji Shijin was held fast in the arms of a certain jealous big fox who had reverted to his original form. Every sensitive spot on his body was toyed with thoroughly.
“No more. I really cannot. Shi Yan.” Ji Shijin opened eyes that were shimmering with moisture, looking at Shi Yan as if pleading for mercy.
In his original fox form, Shi Yan was about three times the size of Ji Shijin. He circled the human completely in his embrace, leaving nothing exposed. The fox head rubbed against him, expressing through body language: “No.”
Ji Shijin felt so ashamed he was on the verge of fainting. If he had not quite felt the reality of Shi Yan being a fox demon before, today he fully understood the difference between a demon and a human.
Shi Yan had absolutely no sense of shame!
And, a human and a fox, how could they!
By the stream behind the cottage, the massive fox figure curled around a thinly clad human. Even though Shi Yan had long since set up an array to block any prying eyes, Ji Shijin still curled up in embarrassment.
“I really cannot. Let us go back, okay? We have to travel tomorrow.” Ji Shijin turned his head to kiss the big fox’s ear in a fawning manner, whispering pleas, “Today is enough, I have already… twice. Let me go, I beg you.”
Eventually, the satisfied big fox finally released him. By then, Ji Shijin was a sight to behold; his clothes were a crumpled mess from being handled and toyed with. He looked as if he had been fished out of water, drenched and pitiful. The skin exposed to the air was covered in marks, with hardly a blank space to be found.
Ji Shijin was so exhausted he did not even have the strength to lift a finger. However, when Shi Yan, now back in human form, picked him up, he did not forget to struggle to open his eyes and glare at him: “Shi Yan!”
“Mm.” The satisfied man had become exceptionally easy to talk to. He carried him toward the cottage, feigning ignorance of Ji Shijin’s indignant glare. “It is late, you should sleep. We need to leave early tomorrow.”
Ji Shijin glared at him, but since it had already happened, nothing he said could change it. Moreover, his body was indeed aching and tired; he lacked the energy to bicker with Shi Yan.
“I am so sleepy.” He rubbed against Shi Yan’s chest, his voice softening.
“Then sleep,” Shi Yan said tenderly, leaning down to kiss the crown of his head. “I will help you clean up.”
As Ji Shijin spoke, his eyes were already closing. Hearing this, he murmured, “Mm.”
The next morning, Shi Yan woke up as if he had an internal alarm clock. He looked at the person still fast asleep in the crook of his arm. After a moment’s thought, he gave up on the idea of waking him. He got up, packed their belongings, wrapped Ji Shijin in a thick blanket, and teleported away from the cottage.
“Old Ancestor!”
The little white fox had come to say goodbye today. Halfway there, he saw the Old Ancestor carrying the human in his arms, looking as if they were leaving immediately.
Shi Yan saw the little fox from a distance and paused for a moment, waiting for him to run up.
The little fox panted as he looked up. “Old Ancestor, are you leaving? Will you come back?”
He directed his words to Shi Yan, but his eyes never left the person in Shi Yan’s arms.
Shi Yan thought for a moment and said, “We will come back.”
“Will your human come back too?” The little fox asked wistfully. “I still want to play ball with him.”
The corners of Shi Yan’s mouth curved slightly. “But he is a human; he is not of the same race as you.”
The little fox had not expected Shi Yan to say this. His expression went blank for a moment, but he quickly reacted: “It does not matter if he is human! I like playing with him! The aura on him is very comfortable!”
The young cub did not yet understand the complexities of inter-species relations. He simply liked Ji Shijin; he liked the smell of this human, liked his personality, and liked playing ball with him.
Afraid that Shi Yan would not bring Ji Shijin back, the little fox added hurriedly, “Old Ancestor, I like him. Please bring him back next time, okay?”
“I, I,” the little fox frantically searched for what he could offer. “I can share my spiritual fruits with him! I can even teach him spells!”
Shi Yan smiled, neither agreeing nor refusing the conditions. Instead, he said, “Then practice well. He will visit often in the future. If you study hard, I will let you play with him.”
The little fox took it seriously. “Great! I will definitely study hard!”
“Mm.” Shi Yan looked up at the sky, bid the little fox farewell, and teleported out of the Fox Clan territory.
After he left, the old man who had been hiding behind an ancient tree stepped out. He looked with a complex expression at the heartless, secretly joyful little fox. He had long known his cub was looking for Shi Yan and had seen that frail human. Initially, he held the view that humans and demons were different and wanted the cub to have less contact with him. However, the human had been very patient while playing with the cub and never showed any ill intent, so the old man had gradually let go of his prejudice.
“Who would have thought. The Old Ancestor actually fell in love with a human.” The old man stroked his white beard, shaking his head and sighing.
A pity, then. Human lifespans are only a few short decades; the “frequent meetings” the cub looked forward to would likely be impossible.
Wait.
The old man’s hand froze mid-stroke, nearly pulling out his few remaining whiskers.
The Old Ancestor had just told the cub they would return often. Everyone knew the Old Ancestor would never lie to a fox cub, which meant…
“Sss!”
The old fox, having accidentally stumbled upon the truth, hissed sharply. His expression shifted through several colors before finally settling on a distorted, indescribable look.
Shi Yan had sensed the old man’s presence long ago, but since he meant no harm and was only worried about his cub, Shi Yan did not drive him away. After parting with the little white fox, he carried the peacefully sleeping Ji Shijin through the entrance of the demon realm and into the forest of human society.
After sending a message to his subordinates, Shi Yan carried Ji Shijin slowly to the small town bordering the forest, where he saw a waiting car by the roadside.
“Boss, you are finally back!” The driver was the same man who had dropped them off last time. He only knew they were going for a secret experiment, but having been unable to contact the boss for three months, he had been quite worried. Fortunately, Shi Yan contacted him today to pick them up.
Shi Yan nodded at him and signaled for silence. Only then did the man notice the sleeping person in his arms and immediately shut his mouth.
In their line of work, they knew better than to be too curious about the employer’s private affairs, unless they wanted to find out how they died.
The man opened the rear door. Shi Yan sat inside with Ji Shijin. The sound of the car starting was a bit loud; Ji Shijin’s eyelashes fluttered, and he slowly opened his eyes.
“Where is this?” Ji Shijin’s eyes widened once he saw the surroundings. He looked down at the thick blanket wrapped around him, then at Shi Yan, who would not let go of him. “We are already out?!”
Shi Yan reached out to tuck the blanket lower near his chin, replying softly, “You were too exhausted yesterday and could not be woken up, so I just carried you out directly.”
61 was peeking from the system space. Seeing his host tell such a lie without blinking or a change in heartbeat, he let out a contemptuous “Tsk.” Host, you really have the nerve to deceive the mission target. It is clearly because you felt guilty and deliberately did not wake him.
Shi Yan’s brow twitched. He muted 61 for half an hour. 61, daring to be angry but not to speak, retreated to the depths of the system space to reflect.
“Where are we now?” Having just woken up, Ji Shijin’s voice was slightly raspy and soft, making one’s heart itch.
Shi Yan looked out the window. “Almost at the airport. We will fly to Country Y, then transfer back to Chengning.”
With Shi Yan’s status and wealth, applying for a private jet was not an issue, but international routes were difficult to clear quickly. The time wasted might be more than just taking an international flight.
So, after consulting Ji Shijin, Shi Yan chartered the two flights back to Chengning, returning in a manner that was low-profile yet not quite.
Upon landing in Chengning, the person meeting them was Cheng Ci, who had been busy as a dog and had only recently found some free time.
Ji Shijin’s legs still lacked strength, so he used a wheelchair after getting off the plane. As Shi Yan pushed him out of the airport, they saw a tall man with white hair, looking like a total non-mainstream rebel, waving at them from a distance.
He was quite conspicuous even in a crowded airport.
Ji Shijin saw him first and was stunned for a moment. Then, a smile touched his lips, and he looked up at Shi Yan. “Cheng Ci must have worked very hard during this time, right? We were away for three months, and everything relied on him.”
Shi Yan did not spare a single glance for the embarrassing white-haired man, saying flatly, “The compensation I gave him is worth him risking his life for me for another ten years. If he thinks it is hard, perhaps I can consider replacing him.”
They happened to reach Cheng Ci just as Shi Yan finished his last sentence. Cheng Ci immediately grew anxious: “Who said I am unwilling! I am extremely willing! It is not hard at all!”
He made no mention of the fact that he had lost over ten pounds from working around the clock; even his original form had shrunk a size.
Ji Shijin could not help but laugh, but he still thanked him seriously: “Thank you for your hard work.”
“It is not hard, really.” Cheng Ci opened the car door for them with a beaming face, respectfully and enthusiastically inviting them in.
He had indeed been tortured to the point of exhaustion by the work, but the reward far exceeded his expectations. For the highly ambitious Cheng Ci, it was a windfall that could save him twenty years of struggle.
The understated, spacious luxury car pulled away from the airport and joined the flow of traffic. Wearing a pair of sunglasses, Cheng Ci reported while driving: “Boss, the rehabilitation room you wanted is ready. Should we go there now, or?”
Shi Yan turned to ask for Ji Shijin’s opinion. Ji Shijin thought about it; since he would eventually live at Shi Yan’s place for daily rehab anyway, going there directly now was fine.
“Let us go straight there. I will tell Aunt Hong later to have her move back to the old mansion. Just have the chef and servants come regularly to cook and clean.” After Ji Shijin finished, he glanced at Shi Yan. Seeing no objection, it was settled.
Cheng Ci tapped the navigation a few times to set the new route. “Understood.”
Looking at the scenery outside that he had not seen for three months, Ji Shijin suddenly remembered something he had forgotten: “I forgot to tell my parents that I am back!”
He turned to Shi Yan with a look of subtle accusation.
Ji Shijin had planned to call his parents as soon as they left the demon realm, but he had slept all the way until Shi Yan carried him out, and then with the flight transfers, the matter had slipped his mind.
No wonder he felt something was off, like he had forgotten something but could not recall what.
Ji Shijin’s scalp felt a bit numb. The news of his landing in Chengning had not been kept a secret; it must have spread through their social circles by now. He did not dare imagine how his parents would scold him if they found out he was back from someone else.
Even as a twenty-something CEO who held great power, he still felt a guilty urge to hide when faced with his parents’ lecturing.
Shi Yan squeezed his fingers, comforting him: “It is fine. I already told them in advance.”
Ji Shijin looked up in surprise. “You told them? Wait… how do you have my parents’ contact information?”
Shi Yan chose not to answer that, raising an eyebrow. “That is a secret.”
Ji Shijin watched him for a moment and gave up on pressing for an answer, knowing that if Shi Yan did not want to speak, he could not do anything about it. However, he changed the question: “What did you say to them?”
He was curious about how Shi Yan had phrased it and in what capacity.
One had to remember that before they left, Ji Shijin had described Shi Yan to his parents as just a friend.
Shi Yan looked at him with an inscrutable expression. Ji Shijin, confused, tilted his head. “Hmm? Tell me.”
Seeing him act spoiled without realizing it, Shi Yan’s eyes darkened. He answered, “I said you fell asleep from exhaustion on the way, so I was reporting in for you.”
“That is all?” Ji Shijin did not quite believe him.
“Of course not.” Shi Yan deliberately teased his curiosity, only relenting when Ji Shijin could not help but tug at his sleeve.
His eyes were filled with shimmering laughter as he used Ji Shijin’s mother’s nickname for him: “Ah Jin, you should trust how well your parents know you.”
“Even if they could not see the nature of our relationship, could they not see that your attitude toward me is different?” Shi Yan’s voice carried a smile, but Ji Shijin had no time to worry about that; the hand gripping Shi Yan’s sleeve tightened.
At the thought of how confidently he had claimed Shi Yan was just a close friend to his parents, Ji Shijin wanted to dig a hole and crawl into it forever.
His parents had probably seen through his feelings for Shi Yan from the start, which was why they had agreed so easily to let him go away with him.
A blush slowly crept up his cheeks. Ji Shijin closed his eyes and bumped his head against Shi Yan’s arm, wishing he could give himself amnesia.
He could already imagine the teasing and knowing expressions on his parents’ faces when he saw them again.
As a proud CEO, he had hidden the fact that his friend was actually his boyfriend, only to find out his parents had known all along. To Ji Shijin, the blow was no less than a student being caught in a secret romance after stubbornly claiming they were just study buddies, only to be seen kissing.
“Shi Yan,” his muffled voice sounded. “How about we go back in a few more days? I think Country Y is quite nice. It would not hurt to stay there a bit longer.”
Shi Yan teased him: “Not worried about your company anymore?”
With his ears turning red, Ji Shijin shook his head.
