- Chapter 22 - But He Miscalculated the Demon's Boldness
The next day, Ji Shijin woke up in a warm embrace.
As soon as his consciousness cleared, he opened his eyes to see a scene different from usual. He froze for a moment before realizing that Shi Yan had stayed the night. However, had they slept while embracing each other last night?
Ji Shijin blinked, confusedly wondering what the current situation was. He was being held face to face in Shi Yan’s arms. The tip of his nose was very close to the man’s chest, and his breath brushed against the well-defined muscles. The warmth behind his waist revealed the position of the man’s hand. He was completely enveloped; it was hot, and it felt very novel.
Shi Yan’s breathing was shallow and long. Perhaps because his brain was not yet fully awake, Ji Shijin made a very bold move. He moved closer quietly and kissed the man on the chin.
“Awake?”
The sudden voice startled Ji Shijin. He blinked rapidly and looked into Shi Yan’s eyes with trembling eyelashes. Those eyes held no morning confusion; instead, they were very clear.
“Cough,” Ji Shijin became shy at that moment. His upper body leaned back slightly, and his gaze drifted. “You have been awake for a long time?”
“Mm.” Shi Yan’s voice carried a magnetic raspiness. The hand at Ji Shijin’s waist exerted force, pulling him closer. Shi Yan leaned down and asked, “Why are you secretly doing bad things?”
A hint of panic appeared on Ji Shijin’s face. He had not yet adapted to his new relationship with Shi Yan, and he explained incoherently, “No, I just.”
He was just what? Ji Shijin could not continue; he was indeed doing a “bad thing.”
Fortunately, Shi Yan did not intend to hold it against him. He released him, sat up, and rolled out of bed under Ji Shijin’s unconsciously lingering gaze.
“Alright, get up. Do you need me to help you?” Shi Yan circled to Ji Shijin’s side and stood by the bed, looking down at him.
Ji Shijin hesitated for a moment but still reached out his hand to him. When he was picked up with his waist supported, Ji Shijin buried his head in Shi Yan’s shoulder with reddened ears. The man’s movements paused for a second, and his voice carried a faint hint of laughter. “You were not this shy when I held you yesterday.”
Ji Shijin did not speak, burying his head like an ostrich. It was not until he was placed in his wheelchair and pushed into the bathroom that Ji Shijin suddenly snapped out of it upon seeing his dazed reflection in the mirror. He pushed Shi Yan outward.
“You just wait for me outside.”
The door was closed. Ji Shijin supported himself on the vanity and slowly exhaled, meeting the eyes of the person in the mirror. Everything happened so fast that he actually felt it was quite surreal.
Forcefully kissing Shi Yan yesterday was an impulse. Although he did not regret it, he had never thought Shi Yan would agree so easily. Before this, he had sensed Shi Yan’s tolerance and concern for him, which far exceeded that for ordinary people. However, Ji Shijin would not be so foolish as to think that meant love. He had self-awareness; how could a fox who had lived for a thousand years be so easily moved?
But it did not matter. Since Shi Yan personally admitted to this relationship, all he could do was try his best to make Shi Yan truly like him, even if the ending was not beautiful.
“Knock, knock.” There was a knock on the door, and Shi Yan’s voice came through.
“It has been ten minutes, and I haven’t heard the sound of water. What are you doing?”
Ji Shijin woke up from his daydream and hurriedly turned on the faucet.
The first day of being in love with Shi Yan was the same as usual, yet also different.
When Ji Shijin went downstairs to eat, Shi Yan changed back into the little fox as usual. After eating, the fox slipped away from the low garden wall, while Ji Shijin went to work at the company as scheduled.
The employees of the Ji Corporation were quite surprised that the little fox, who had been following him to the company frequently, was suddenly missing this morning. They were discussing it fervently in their private group chats.
The young lady at the reception desk was also slacking off during work hours, her fingers flying across the screen in the group chat. It was already past the clock-in period, and the reception area was very quiet.
“Knock, knock.”
The receptionist’s typing hand paused. She immediately composed her expression, revealing a standard professional smile, and looked up.
“Hello, may I ask who you are looking for?” What met her eyes was the face of a very young and handsome man. The receptionist was caught off guard by his good looks and stuttered before finishing her sentence. “Who?”
“I am looking for your President Ji.”
The receptionist froze. “Do you have an appointment? I will check for for you.”
Shi Yan naturally had no appointment. He glanced at his phone; the message he sent to Ji Shijin had not received a reply. Perhaps he was in a meeting. He looked at the receptionist and said calmly, “Please call Assistant Zhou in the President’s office. He knows me.”
“Alright, please wait a moment.” Shi Yan’s composed aura did not make him look like a liar. The receptionist dialed the office. “Hello, I am looking for Assistant Zhou. Yes, Assistant Zhou, someone at the front desk wants to see President Ji. Yes, he said his name is.”
The receptionist looked up, and Shi Yan pushed his business card toward her. “Yes, the guest’s name is Shi Yan.”
Not knowing what was said on the other end, the receptionist gave Shi Yan a surprised look and then hung up. Her smile became more genuine. “Please wait a moment; Assistant Zhou will be down shortly.”
Assistant Zhou came down very quickly. Heaven knows how shocked he was when he heard on the phone that the visitor was Shi Yan. No appointment, and President Ji did not know; this clearly was not for work. What else could it be? It must be a private activity between a young couple!
So, Assistant Zhou rushed down to meet him.
“Mr. Shi, President Ji is in a morning meeting. It will likely take some time to end. Shall I take you up first?” Assistant Zhou was not very clear about this Mr. Shi’s character, so he spoke speculatively.
Shi Yan had no objection. The executive elevator reached the floor of the President’s office and opened. Shi Yan stepped out, followed by Assistant Zhou. As soon as the elevator doors opened, the assistant department fell silent. According to the schedule, there should be no visitors, but everyone had seen Assistant Zhou personally going down to meet him. Now, they all peeked over curiously.
Shi Yan followed Assistant Zhou into the meeting room without looking sideways. He sat on the sofa and clearly heard the discussion outside.
“My goodness, he is so handsome. Is he a partner of our Ji Corporation?” “I am seeing an angel. He is a completely different type of handsome compared to President Ji! His hormones are overflowing!” “He looks so cold. He will not be difficult to deal with, will he, Sister Xiao?”
Tasks like hosting distinguished guests were usually handled by Xiao Xuan. Since Ji Shijin was in a meeting, Xiao Xuan hurriedly brewed a pot of tea to bring in. Hearing the discussion of her subordinates, Xiao Xuan made a “shh” sound and scolded them, “Do not talk nonsense. Go back to whatever you should be doing.”
She had worked by President Ji’s side for many years and knew what could be gossiped about and what could not. She dismissed the team members and knocked on the door of the meeting room with the tea.
“Mr. Shi, have some tea. Our President Ji is still in a meeting. Please wait here for a moment.” While speaking, Xiao Xuan subtly observed Shi Yan’s expression.
Shi Yan gave a flat “mm” and turned his gaze to his phone screen, looking as if he were waiting for a message. Xiao Xuan secretly breathed a sigh of relief; he did not seem like a difficult guest who would add to her workload for no reason. Thinking this, the smile on her face became more sincere, and she asked softly, “Do you have any other needs?”
Shi Yan glanced at her, not understanding why this assistant was so enthusiastic. In the past, when he came to work with Ji Shijin as the little fox, he had seen Xiao Xuan facing clients with the image of a resentful worker. However, he still responded calmly, “No, I can manage.”
Xiao Xuan exited the meeting room with a light heart and was immediately met by several gossiping gazes. “Alright, go back to your seats,” Xiao Xuan said with a laugh as she drove them away.
Shi Yan sat in the meeting room for a while. During that time, Assistant Zhou entered once with a bitter expression. Shi Yan asked him what was wrong. He hesitated but eventually spoke, “Mr. Shi, President Ji is furious in the conference room. Could you please help persuade him?”
Before he could finish, Shi Yan had already stood up and asked as he walked out, “Tell me the details.”
“It is like this.” Assistant Zhou turned to follow his pace. He was about to say that the conference room was on the other side, but he saw Shi Yan steadily turning in that direction, as familiar as if he had been there many times. Without time to think much, Assistant Zhou quickly explained what had happened. He did not mention internal company privacy but said that because a manager’s report contained an error, the people involved at various levels had failed to see the problem. It was not until the public report at today’s meeting that Ji Shijin pointed out the issue.
Shi Yan had long legs and reached the conference room door in a few steps. Assistant Zhou finished his explanation just as they stopped outside. They heard Ji Shijin’s voice inside, suppressing his anger as he scolded the employees.
“Not a single person saw such an obvious mistake. Are you here at the Ji Corporation to just wait for death! Today is a team report. If it were a report before the board of directors another day, would such a mistake also occur?”
Assistant Zhou bit the bullet and took a step forward, knocking twice on the door. After receiving a response, he pushed the door open. “President Ji.”
Ji Shijin was still in a fit of rage and said crossly without looking back, “What are you looking for me for? Did I not say no interruptions until the meeting is over?”
Assistant Zhou felt bitter, thinking that if he did not interrupt, he feared the President would be infuriated to death by his subordinates. Moreover, this was a special situation; the person here was the boss’s rumored partner, and he did not dare fail to report it.
“Knock.” A slender finger curved, knocking on the door with a knuckle. Everyone in the conference room heard a cold and noble voice. “Is it not okay for me to look for you either?”
The irritable expression on Ji Shijin’s face froze instantly. He turned around and saw the man leaning against the door in a lazy posture. Shi Yan revealed a faint smile that only Ji Shijin could perceive, and his voice softened. “President Ji, can the meeting end now?”
The employees who had been scolded all morning in the conference room finally escaped. Before leaving, everyone involuntarily looked at the man beside their boss. He was a new face they had never seen, but he could easily make the boss calm down; he certainly was not a simple character.
Once everyone had left, Assistant Zhou also quietly retreated and closed the door. Only the two of them remained in the large conference room. Shi Yan stood beside Ji Shijin and looked down at him, reaching out to gently brush his hair. His voice was very light. “Still angry?”
Ji Shijin had stopped being angry the moment he saw Shi Yan. Now that it was mentioned, he hugged the man’s waist aggrievedly and leaned his head against him. “You heard all that just now? I am not usually like that. Today was a special case.”
Shi Yan gave a low laugh. “Yes, I know.”
Ji Shijin was afraid that Shi Yan would not like this side of him, but only Shi Yan knew that he did not care about those things and felt that an angry Ji Shijin was also very cute.
“When did you come over? Why did you not tell me in advance? I would have gone down.”
Ji Shijin’s voice was interrupted. Shi Yan took out his phone and opened their chat interface; several one sided messages were displayed clearly before Ji Shijin. Ji Shijin said hoarsely, “Sorry, my phone was in the office. I did not see it.” He lowered his eyes, looking a bit dejected.
Shi Yan did not understand why Ji Shijin would have so many emotions because of a small action, but that did not stop him from comforting him.
“Alright, it is fine. I had the front desk contact Assistant Zhou to bring me up. Assistant Xiao brewed tea for me,” Shi Yan laughed very lightly. “Your little assistants saw me for the first time, and the gossip in their eyes was plain to see.”
Ji Shijin hugged him and smelled the scent on his body, smiling faintly at the words. “They are all young girls and are usually a bit lively. Mr. Shi, please do not hold it against them.”
Shi Yan pinched the back of his neck. “I will not. I know they have no ill intent.”
The two held each other in the conference room for a while. Shi Yan observed that Ji Shijin’s emotions had stabilized before letting him go. The two returned to Ji Shijin’s office one after the other. The office door was closed, followed immediately by the sound of it being locked. Assistant Zhou rubbed his nose and consciously went to order lunch for two.
Hearing the sound of the door locking, Ji Shijin became inexplicably nervous for a moment, then relaxed again. This was his office; locking the door was just to prevent outsiders from entering without greeting, not because Shi Yan wanted to do something here.
But he miscalculated the demon’s boldness. After locking the door, Shi Yan walked toward him, naturally turned the wheelchair around, and leaned down to kiss him.
“Mm.”
Ji Shijin was caught off guard by the kiss. In his panic, his fingers gripped the edge of the desk so hard that his fingernails turned white. “Don’t, this is the company.”
Shi Yan released him, moving his body a bit further away, then leaned in again to give a lingering peck. “I know. What did you think I was going to do?” Shi Yan asked this on purpose.
They had not done anything except kissing. Ji Shijin did not know what he was thinking every day; did he think Shi Yan would do something excessive to him here? Ji Shijin also knew he had misunderstood. He hurriedly pushed away the man blocking him and coughed twice to show his innocence. “Nothing. I am going to work!”
Shi Yan in his state of being in love was so enthusiastic that he could not handle it. But Shi Yan clearly did not intend to let him off so easily. Taking advantage of Ji Shijin’s relaxed guard, he suddenly reached out and picked the man up, turning around to place him on the office desk.
Ji Shijin’s hands climbed onto his shoulders, his rear touching the cold desk surface. His legs were separated, and the man crowded in without allowing any argument, leaning down with ambiguity. Ji Shijin’s pupils dilated suddenly. The head buried at the side of his neck moved. He only felt a fleeting softness and moisture on his neck. Shi Yan gave a low laugh and looked up.
He would not do anything, but a little teasing was fine. Ji Shijin reached out to push him in embarrassment. “Stop teasing me.”
