- Chapter 14 - Making His Steady Heart Flutter
After everything Ji Shijin had endured that evening, he was in a state of complete disarray. Once Shi Yan proactively looked away to give him privacy, Ji Shijin moved from the bed to his wheelchair and headed straight into the bathroom.
The rooms in this bar were typically prepared for those who had too much to drink and felt a spark of “one-night passion,” so the bathroom was exceptionally spacious. The large platform next to the bathtub proved to be quite convenient for Ji Shijin, given his leg disability.
The clothes he was wearing had been worn all day and were now soaked with sweat from the effects of the drug; they were unwearable. When Ji Shijin emerged wrapped in a bathrobe from the bathroom, he saw a set of long-sleeved clothes and trousers laid out by the bed.
It was a set of pajamas made of very soft, skin-friendly fabric.
Ji Shijin ran his fingers over the neatly folded clothes before turning to look at the person, or rather, the demon, standing at the bedroom door.
“Time was tight, and this was all I could find nearby. It’ll have to do for tonight,” Shi Yan said, leaning against the doorframe as he spoke to the man inside.
“First thing tomorrow morning, contact your assistant to come and pick you up.”
Ji Shijin turned around abruptly. “Where are you going?”
Shi Yan, whose long legs had already carried him to the threshold, looked back. He paused when he saw Ji Shijin maneuvering his wheelchair toward him in a rush. “To resolve some identity issues,” he replied. “Do not worry, this room is safe. Go back to sleep.”
Ji Shijin realized he was being overly tense. Once he calmed down, his face regained its usual composure. He nodded and said, “Alright, thank you.”
“Mm.” Shi Yan opened the door and stepped out, closing it behind him. Ji Shijin saw a faint red light flicker on the door before disappearing a few seconds later, as if it had merged into the wood.
After the red light vanished, the sound of footsteps gradually faded into the distance.
The little fox, Shi Yan, was gone.
Returning to the bed, Ji Shijin pulled up the covers and lay down. His mind continuously replayed the day’s events: from attending the business social, to being drugged, then being rescued, and finally seeing ears sprout from the man’s head and calling out his little fox’s name only to receive a response.
Ji Shijin breathed out a long sigh. The bedroom lights were dim. He rested his arm across his eyes, plunging himself into complete darkness. His exhausted body was already protesting; shortly after closing his eyes, he sank into a deep sleep.
In the dead of night, the array Shi Yan had carved onto the door suddenly glowed. A strand of red light drifted into the bedroom, accurately finding the man on the bed.
Thousands of miles away, the traveling Shi Yan suddenly stopped. His fingers formed a seal as he chanted under his breath.
The red light infused into the space between Ji Shijin’s brows, smoothing out his lingering worries and granting him a peaceful, beautiful dream.
The next morning, as bright daylight flooded in, Ji Shijin was woken by the persistent vibration of his phone.
The screen displayed his assistant’s name. Ji Shijin answered, listened to a few words from the other side, gave a few brief responses, and hung up. He quickly went to the bathroom to freshen up.
Opening the bedroom door, he found a person sitting quietly on the living room sofa, dressed in light blue casual wear. Hearing the sound, the man looked up.
Ji Shijin’s breath hitched.
Last night had been too chaotic, with everything happening at once, such that Ji Shijin hadn’t had a chance to properly observe his little fox.
Last night, Shi Yan had arrived in a hurry, wearing the clothes he had manifested during his transformation, a somewhat primitive, Chinese-style long robe that made him look like someone who had stepped out of an ancient painting.
Now that he possessed an identity in human society and would need to appear in public as a human, those conspicuous clothes were no longer suitable. Shi Yan had bought several new outfits, and he was currently wearing one of them.
He wore a white shirt underneath a light blue casual suit. The fabric was soft and lacked structure, but the man’s broad shoulders, narrow waist, and upright posture filled it out perfectly. Even though he was fully covered, one could catch glimpses of the faint muscular outlines of his arms, shoulders, and back.
It wasn’t noticeable when he was a little fox, but now that he was human, Shi Yan’s height and aura gave him a vivid, undeniable presence that actually made Ji Shijin feel a bit uneasy.
Shi Yan, however, felt no such thing. Seeing Ji Shijin come out, he stood up and walked to the kitchen. A moment later, he brought out breakfast.
Placing the store-bought breakfast, which he had kept warm in the kitchen, on the dining table, Shi Yan looked up at him. “Come and eat.”
Ji Shijin maneuvered his wheelchair toward him but stopped halfway, looking down at himself. “I haven’t changed clothes yet.”
Shi Yan had forgotten about that. He walked around the table back to the sofa, picked up a bag sitting beside it, and handed it to him. “It is your size. I had it washed; it is clean.”
“Thank you.” Ji Shijin did not know how the other man knew his size. He took the clothes, returned to the bedroom to change, and came back out. He found Shi Yan sitting on the sofa again, holding a phone and talking to someone.
Seeing Ji Shijin emerge, Shi Yan pointed toward the dining table from a distance, signaling for him to eat.
Thus, Ji Shijin ate the porridge and snacks Shi Yan had brought while listening to him on the phone. It was a strange sensation; here he was, the CEO of a listed company, eating leisurely while the little fox he had kept as a pet just days ago had turned into a man. This man was now proficiently using human tools and, judging by his tone, it sounded like he was discussing serious business.
It felt as though the roles of master and servant had been reversed.
Ji Shijin finished his breakfast with deliberate grace. He did not have a large appetite, and it had only been about ten minutes.
There was a knock at the door. At this hour, there was no doubt who it was. Just as Ji Shijin was about to head over to open it, the long-legged Shi Yan beat him to it.
The lock clicked, and as the door opened just a crack, Assistant Zhou’s voice rang out impatiently.
“Boss, are you alright?”
Assistant Zhou stood at the door. As it opened fully, he found himself staring at an unfamiliar man’s face and was instantly silenced by shock.
The man opening the door was wearing a high-end custom suit that clearly looked expensive. His face was handsome but carried a cold air that made one hesitant to approach. His indifferent gaze made Assistant Zhou subconsciously hold his breath.
He stood frozen on the spot, his mind racing. Who is this man? Did I get the wrong room? Where is my boss? Is he okay?
Cheng Ci, standing next to Assistant Zhou, could not take it anymore and nudged him. “What are you dazing off for? Snap out of it.”
“Ah, oh, right.” Assistant Zhou walked into the room with a face like a sleepwalker and saw his boss, dressed impeccably, sitting at the dining table eating breakfast.
As Ji Shijin’s gaze shifted toward him, he jolted. “Boss!”
“Mm.” Ji Shijin moved from the dining area to the living room. He noticed that Shi Yan was sitting in a single-seater sofa; the furniture had been rearranged slightly to leave a space perfectly suited for a wheelchair.
Seeing Ji Shijin arrive beside him, Shi Yan gestured to the other two standing there dumbfounded. “Sit.”
Assistant Zhou did not know this man’s identity. Seeing him act so naturally as the host by inviting them to sit, he was momentarily stunned before being pushed into a seat by the exasperated Cheng Ci.
Shi Yan had left the long sofa for them, which was more than enough room for two. Cheng Ci took the opportunity while sitting down to steal a glance at Ji Shijin. Seeing his normal complexion and fluid movements, he secretly wondered if nothing really happened last night.
Two men alone in a room, with one of them drugged, and they actually did nothing? They just stayed under the covers and slept?
Cheng Ci was amazed by the purity of this thousand-year-old fox.
Ji Shijin noticed the gaze that Cheng Ci thought was hidden. He looked back, his surprise unconcealed.
“CEO Cheng, why are you here as well?” He addressed the question to Cheng Ci, but his eyes shifted to Shi Yan beside him.
Mr. Fox sat steadily. He had somehow found the time to brew a cup of tea for himself and was currently blowing on the steam.
Noticing Ji Shijin’s look, he handed him another cup from the table, not forgetting to instruct him. “It is good for your body. Drink it all.”
Ji Shijin took a sip. A strange, subtle fragrance permeated his mouth, and a warmth slid down his throat into his body, forming a cozy heat in his abdomen that lingered.
A flash of surprise crossed his eyes, but mindful of the outsiders, he swallowed his questions, planning to ask Shi Yan privately later.
Seeing him obediently drink the tea, Shi Yan finally answered the previous question unhurriedly. “Last night, it was Cheng Ci who noticed something was wrong and got you out. Then, I instructed him to investigate the person behind it.”
“So that is how it is.” Ji Shijin looked at Cheng Ci, his gaze sharp and observant. “Thank you, CEO Cheng. I will have my assistant send a gift to the Cheng Corporation later.”
“No, no, no need.” Cheng Ci had been staring at the contents of Ji Shijin’s cup. If he was not mistaken, that was a spirit herb unique to the demon race. It was incredibly powerful for healing internal and external injuries, but its yield was tiny, making its value astronomical. And yet, Shi Yan was using it to nourish a human’s body.
What a total waste of resources.
However, he could only say this in his head. A Great Demon was sitting right across from him; he would not dare complain even if he were given ten thousand times the courage.
When Ji Shijin offered his thanks, Cheng Ci nearly jumped out of his skin. Now that he knew Ji Shijin was involved with the fox demon, he feared that accepting this gratitude might actually shorten his lifespan.
“CEO Ji, you are too kind. Since you are Shi Yan’s friend, you are naturally my friend. It was only right for me to do this.” Cheng Ci stole a few glances at Shi Yan, and seeing that he did not deny it, he forced himself to continue.
Ji Shijin lowered his eyes, his long lashes casting a heavy shadow. His thoughts spun as he formed a guess regarding Cheng Ci’s identity.
“Ahem, let’s talk business first. We’ve found leads regarding last night,” Cheng Ci said, eager to avoid any more conversational pitfalls. He pushed Assistant Zhou forward. “Your assistant has all the information we gathered. Take a look.”
The dazing Assistant Zhou was jolted awake by the push. Realizing it was work time, he handed the documents to his boss and provided helpful explanations on the side.
During this, he glanced at the unidentified man and noticed he seemed to be staring into space.
In reality, Cheng Ci was communicating with Shi Yan via telepathy, relaying the gathered info.
“The one who administered the drug was just a waiter who took money to do it; he does not know who the mastermind is. We found out that the guy you were negotiating business with is the heir to the Zhao family in Chenning. Six months ago, he was brought into a very wild social circle by a friend. He already loved to play around, so he integrated quickly.”
“Later, after learning his company had a partnership with the Ji Group, he set his sights on you. Your security has always been relatively relaxed, and since he requested the meeting in his father’s name, he figured the plan would not be hard to execute. So, he made his move today.”
“He even considered the worst-case scenario. Even if the night of passion with you failed, the reporters he arranged would have captured a scandal for Ji Shijin, which he could then use to blackmail you.”
Cheng Ci’s voice grew quieter. He saw the cold expression deepening on Shi Yan’s face and could already foresee the Zhao kid’s demise.
“Go report him for drug use,” Shi Yan said calmly after listening.
Cheng Ci’s brain could not keep up. “What?”
“To move against Ji Shijin, even if he had the guts, he would have to consider his family’s business. For the Ji Group to deal with the Zhao family, they would not have to lift more than a finger,” Shi Yan said.
Cheng Ci had a realization. “If that Zhao kid were in his right mind, he definitely would not have done this. So, something controlled his brain, making him lust-crazed enough to do it.”
“Mm.” Shi Yan blew on the tea leaves and took a sip. “If it was not done by a demon, then it can only be man-made.”
Cheng Ci complied and turned to instruct his subordinates to investigate further.
Shi Yan lowered his eyes, calling out to 61 in his mind. “Are the tracking results out?”
He had 61 trace the Zhao kid’s movements back six months to see if there was any involvement from the demon race.
Sure enough, 61 shook its head. “Host, there is not a trace of demonic energy. Among these people, there are no signs of contact with any unidentified demons.”
As the facts aligned with his suspicions, Shi Yan turned his head to look at Ji Shijin. Listening to his assistant, Ji Shijin’s brow furrowed deeply.
In that moment, it felt as if something struck Shi Yan’s heart, causing his steady heartbeat to suddenly skip a beat.
Sensing Shi Yan’s gaze, Ji Shijin looked back briefly, asking with his eyes. “What is it?”
Shi Yan shook his head slightly to indicate nothing was wrong. Ji Shijin frowned a bit but turned back to continue the discussion with Assistant Zhou.
61 sensed its host was in a bad mood and popped up to show concern. “Host, what is wrong?”
“These events are too coincidental. Each piece seems to have no guidance, but a string of coincidences gathered together makes it hard not to be suspicious.”
“Zhao has always been a known playboy in the circle, but because his family kept a tight leash on him, he never touched gray areas. Yet, exactly six months ago, he was brought into that specific circle, just happened to encounter drugs there, and then today, six months later, he was seized by lust and made a move on Ji Shijin.”
