- Chapter 11 - Just a Little Fox
The demon territory was vast. Shi Yan used several teleportation spells to reach the Fox Clan lands. The little white fox could not wait to jump down. Before Shi Yan could say a word, it scampered inside with a wobbly gait.
“Great-grandfather! Look who is back!”
The little white fox was so excited that its running was a mess. It accidentally tripped over a stone and went flying through the air.
“You little brat, look at you! What kind of demon still trips and falls at your age?” A weary voice spoke. A web of spiritual energy materialized beneath the little white fox, preventing it from hitting the ground hard.
An old man with pure white hair suddenly appeared. He picked up the little white fox and scolded it crossly. “What is all this noise? How many times have I told you that shouting is forbidden within the clan?”
The little white fox perked its tail up, curving it in Shi Yan’s direction.
“Let me see who it is.” The old man turned his head. The moment he saw Shi Yan’s face, he dropped to his knees. “An, an, an, Ancestor!”
“You only just left. Why are you back so soon? Was there something unsatisfying about human society?”
The little old man stood respectfully before Shi Yan, completely losing the stern elder persona he had used to lecture the little white fox. Seeing Shi Yan walk past him, he hurried forward to lead the way.
“Ancestor, what brings you back this time? Are you staying? The youngsters in the clan have missed you dearly.” The little old man prattled on, leading Shi Yan toward the clan’s forbidden grounds. This area was inhabited by several ancient foxes who were so old they were nearing the end of their lives.
Upon reaching the entrance, the old man could go no further. Shi Yan knew this and flicked his sleeve, sending a telepathic message into the old man’s ear. “I have returned to find something. Do not make a scene.”
Although the original owner of this body was a thousand-year-old great demon, he possessed a simple mind and had not experienced much turmoil. He enjoyed playing with the young demons in the clan. Consequently, while the elder demons treated him with fear and trepidation, the little ones dared to tug at his sleeves and ask for candy.
Shi Yan did not mind the foxes he met on his way back, but if the little old man started shouting, every fox in the clan would flock here to join the fun. Shi Yan did not have that kind of time.
“Yes, of course.”
Watching Shi Yan’s back disappear into the forbidden grounds, the little old man regained his usual strict expression. He accurately snatched the little white fox from behind a nearby tree and tugged its ear as a warning. “Did you hear that? The Ancestor said no shouting. You stay home and behave for the next few days.”
The little white fox was indignant. “Why?”
His great-grandfather smacked its bottom. “Because you cannot keep your mouth shut! You will definitely go out and blabber!”
“Ow.” The little white fox gave a dazed response and rolled its eyes. Taking advantage of his great-grandfather’s relaxed guard, it used a teleportation spell to move a dozen meters away and vanished in an instant.
A distant voice drifted back through the wind. “Bleh, bleh, bleh!”
The little old man shook his head with his hands behind his back, a faint smile on his face. “That little brat.”
He turned back toward the thick mist in the forbidden grounds that blocked all prying eyes. Thinking of something, he sighed. “I feel like something has changed about the Ancestor since his return.”
For the demon race that relied on cultivation, fluctuations in one’s state of mind were more lethal than heavenly tribulations. This was why many great demons chose to live in seclusion in the mountains rather than seek pleasure in the human world.
The Ancestor had gone to the human world once, and now his aura was different. He did not know if this was a good or bad sign.
“Wait, he could not have ended up like that useless demon from the neighboring Wolf Clan who found a human partner in the mortal world, could he?”
The little old man shook his head, casting the rebellious thought from his mind, and turned to catch his disobedient great-grandchild.
Shi Yan went deep into the forbidden grounds. As he stepped into the thick mist, his surroundings seemed to be stained with a layer of ink. It made him look less like a living being and more like someone who had stepped out of a painting.
61 was curious. “Host, the mist here is so thick. Why did the Fox Clan put such thick mist here?”
Shi Yan walked slowly through the fog. His pace did not falter despite the blocked vision. Before long, a bright landscape appeared before them as they stepped out of the mist.
Only then did Shi Yan answer the question. “This mist was created by the Fox Clan ancestors to intimidate young demons and block prying eyes. It keeps the forbidden grounds mysterious.”
A moment later, 61 finally understood why the forbidden grounds needed to remain mysterious. It was because the forbidden grounds were one giant manor!
“Host, Host! There are human-style buildings here!” 61 was shocked into silence as it looked at the manor that closely resembled human architecture.
It only looked that way in shape, however. The small buildings were made of wood, bamboo, and other forest materials. They were essentially wooden cabins, but with the help of demon magic, the finished products looked advanced and high-grade.
The corner of Shi Yan’s mouth quirked up. He stepped forward and knocked on the door in a rhythmic pattern. After waiting a moment, the door opened to a bright room. Sunlight streamed in from glass windows on all sides. The interior decoration was simple and solemn, all crafted from wood and bamboo.
In front of the floor-to-ceiling windows facing the sun, several cushions were neatly arranged. A few foxes were curled up on them, sunbathing.
Shi Yan walked in and pulled up a chair for himself. The cultivation of these old foxes was inferior to his, but their lifespans were nearly at an end. Seeing that he had questions, they merely lay there lazily. They did not transform into human form and were too sluggish to move.
“How was your time playing in human society? Were there many interesting things?” A fox with yellow and black fur spoke first.
“Bah, the human world is not as free as our demon territory. He must have grown bored to come back so soon,” another fox with white and black fur interrupted.
The two foxes began to argue over whether the human world or the demon territory was better. Seeing that they were about to start a fight, Shi Yan cleared his throat. An invisible pressure spread out, silencing both foxes.
“Enough, let us get to the point.” Shi Yan’s gaze was heavy. He had come here for serious business. “Do you know how to remove a death aura from a human?”
“A death aura? That is impossible. Birth, old age, sickness, and death are natural laws. Even we demons cannot avoid them, and humans certainly cannot. He is simply going to die.”
“He is not a normal person at the end of his life. I have looked at his fate. He should have had a smooth and prosperous life, yet he repeatedly encounters danger and hardship. His path is rocky, and he is destined to die in his thirties. The problem lies with the death aura on his body.” Shi Yan frowned as he explained the situation to the old foxes.
When he finished speaking, the room fell silent. The old foxes stopped sleeping and sunbathing. They propped themselves up and frowned in deep thought.
The white and black fox mused. “That is not right. How can a person who is not meant to die have a death aura?”
The yellow and black fox stopped arguing and agreed. “True, true. I have never heard of such a strange thing.”
“Wait.”
The yellow and black fox suddenly thought of something. He jumped up, ran back to his room, and returned with a book in his mouth. He placed the book in front of Shi Yan and narrowed his eyes. “I remember now. This strange occurrence happened once before. It is recorded in this book.”
“Oh?” Shi Yan picked up the book but did not flip through it immediately.
Things were getting closer to his hypothesis. The death aura on Ji Shijin was sudden and did not seem to be the work of someone from this world. However, whoever struck him must be subject to certain restrictions, and those restrictions were the rules of this small world.
Things that exceed the rules cannot appear in this world. Therefore, the death aura on Ji Shijin must be a product of this world, and there was likely a precedent to follow.
“Thank you.” Having obtained what he needed, Shi Yan did not want to linger. He stood up to leave.
“Wait, wait, do not leave in such a hurry.” Another red fox stopped him. “What is your relationship with this person? Did you come back specifically to save him?”
“Yes, exactly. You said it is a human? What do humans have to do with us?” The foxes whispered among themselves.
To them, there was a vast difference between humans and demons. They could not understand why Shi Yan would go to such lengths for a mere human.
Shi Yan remained silent for a moment, but his brief silence caused the old foxes to misunderstand. They looked at each other and then took a step back in unison, their faces filled with identical shock.
“Gasp!”
61 watched their exaggerated performance, its screen filled with question marks. “Host, what are they doing? Is this some kind of performance art?”
Shi Yan replied in his mind, “I do not understand either.”
Under the pressure of Shi Yan’s gaze and status, the red fox spoke up. “That human, he is not the partner you found in human society, is he?”
The surrounding foxes nodded in satisfaction, their faces displaying synchronized expressions of gossip. Shi Yan instinctively frowned. He could not speak about the mission to outsiders, so he truly could not explain.
“No.”
Leaving behind that single word, Shi Yan did not want to stay and serve as gossip for the old foxes. He used a teleportation spell to move outside the manor and stepped back into the thick mist without looking back.
“It is over. The most promising demon of our Fox Clan has become involved with a human.” The old foxes looked worried.
From ancient times to the present, almost any demon who became involved with humans met a bad end, especially those who fell in love. Humans had short lifespans. Decades were nothing more than a period of secluded meditation for the demon race. Consequently, many demons who fell in love with humans came back after a few decades looking distraught and tearful. Some refused to accept fate and sought forbidden spells to extend human life, but they either failed or suffered a massive loss in cultivation. Even if the spell succeeded, the human would not live much longer than a normal person.
The old foxes were so worried they felt their fur might fall out. “What should we do? Our clan finally produced such a genius. If he decides to die with a human,” one sighed.
“Sigh.”
Ultimately unable to find a solution, the old foxes slumped back onto their cushions to continue sunbathing. However, with this matter on their minds, they all looked miserable.
Shi Yan naturally had his own house in the demon territory. The original owner liked peace, so he had built his house by a small stream deep within the Fox Clan lands. The house was maintained by magic, so even though the owner had been away for many days, it remained spotless and clean.
Shi Yan pushed open the door. The interior was simple: a bed and a table, with nothing else. Most demons focused on cultivation, and those without young demons at home usually had such a minimalist setup. It was not about having much, but having enough.
Shi Yan sat on the edge of the bed and took out the book given to him by the old fox, but he did not rush to read it. He pressed his finger to his forehead. In an instant, an invisible channel opened between the two demons separated by thousands of miles.
“Great, great Boss! Do you have any instructions?” On the other end, Cheng Ci asked after a brief stutter.
Shi Yan’s voice, cold as ice, remained clear in Cheng Ci’s ear despite the distance, making him shiver. “How have things been on your end for the past two days?”
Cheng Ci did not flatter himself by thinking the fox was asking about him. He obediently reported Ji Shijin’s movements.
“CEO Ji spent all of yesterday working at the Ji Group. There was nothing unusual. He was also there this morning, but I heard he has a business meeting this afternoon. The location was set by the other party, and I have not found it out yet.”
Shi Yan had instructed him to keep a close eye on Ji Shijin’s schedule and not stay too far from him. Therefore, he had been hanging around the Ji Group for the past two days. He was thinking that if he could not find the address, he would follow Ji Shijin’s car in the afternoon.
“Keep a close watch in crowded places. Do not let Ji Shijin out of your sight.” Shi Yan’s tone was flat, but to Cheng Ci, it was an obvious threat.
After all, foxes were the natural enemies of hedgehogs! Although demons no longer hunted for food, the fear inherited through their bloodlines remained. Furthermore, a great demon like Shi Yan could crush him with a single finger.
“Do not worry. I will definitely keep an eye on him. Not a single hair will be missing!” Cheng Ci promised solemnly.
Cutting the connection, Shi Yan rubbed his forehead. He still felt an underlying sense of hidden danger. For people like him who traveled through dangerous missions long-term, intuition was often a warning tool that could not be ignored.
In any case, he needed to finish things here as quickly as possible and rush back. It was better to watch the mission target in person.
Shi Yan turned his gaze to the book in his hand and opened it. The book was not thick, and he finished reading it in a few minutes.
61 asked impatiently, “How is it? Did you find a solution, Host?”
Shi Yan nodded. “Yes, I have.”
This book was a travelogue from a very long time ago, dating back before Shi Yan was even born. The author was a powerful demon who did not care for cultivation but loved traveling the world. He wrote down everything he saw and heard in books to pass down to future generations. The book in Shi Yan’s hand was one of them.
