Chapter 33: Let Qing Zhu Reflect Properly
For three days after adding Lin Baiyang, there was no message from him. Wu Yi breathed a sigh of relief, thinking he wouldn’t have to deal with the man after all.
However, school started just as he was beginning to relax. Perhaps because he had read Qin Donglin’s notes, he found himself actually interested in studying. Although being at school wasn’t exactly thrilling, he was no longer as resistant to it.
Qing Zhu had kept his word and bought him a flashy sports car. On the day he drove it to school, the looks he received from both sides of the road gave his vanity a small, satisfying boost.
But after a few drives, he grew bored of it and begged Qing Zhu to drive him instead. Once he got his way, he began to look forward to the commute every day.
One day, taking advantage of a gap in his schedule, he was at home preparing a beautiful cake when the doorbell rang.
Li Qingquan had been staying at the house for a few days while working in Yunjing, so Wu Yi assumed it was him. He intentionally smeared some whipped cream on his hand, planning to smudge it on his friend’s face the moment he opened the door.
But just as his finger reached out, he realized the person standing there wasn’t Li Qingquan.
“…”
Lin Baiyang was clearly startled. He frowned slightly at first, looking a bit displeased, but when he saw it was Wu Yi in an apron with a hand full of cream, he broke into an amused smile.
“Making a cake?”
“Yes.” Wu Yi felt embarrassed and hid his hand behind his back. “I’m sorry, I thought it was my friend.”
Lin Baiyang smiled warmly. “It’s fine.” He even reached out, wiped a bit of cream from his own cheek where Wu Yi had touched him, and tasted it. “Tastes good. Chestnut flavor?”
“Yes.” Wu Yi wasn’t sure why he was here and hesitated about letting him in. Qing Zhu had gone to the Qin family today to look for traces of his other servants and hadn’t returned yet.
Lin Baiyang held up a small gift. “I found something nice. I noticed your garden is full of beautiful plants, so I thought this would suit you.”
It was a very cute succulent in a uniquely shaped pot. Wu Yi’s eyes lit up; he liked the design.
“Thank you. My cake is almost done, would you like half?” He hesitated. “Are you on a diet? If you can’t eat it, I can make you a low-sugar one next time…”
“No need, I can eat it. I actually love sweets,” Lin Baiyang laughed. “I don’t have any filming recently, so I can indulge a bit.”
Reassured, Wu Yi invited him in. Lin Baiyang looked around the house as he changed into slippers. “Your home is beautiful. The style is so different. By the way, what kind of tree is that outside?”
He was good at small talk. Wu Yi went behind the kitchen island while Lin Baiyang sat at the bar, watching him frost the cake.
“It’s a ginkgo tree.”
“Then we’ll have a beautiful view in autumn.”
Wu Yi smiled. “But I heard the fallen ginkgo seeds smell bad.”
“Just sweep them up. It’s still atmospheric, isn’t it?” Lin Baiyang chatted for a while before pivoting. “By the way, was that man I saw the other morning your friend?”
Knowing he meant Qing Zhu, Wu Yi said, “He’s my brother.”
“I see. It’s good you two live together to look after each other.” Lin Baiyang watched Wu Yi pipe flowers onto the cake. Seeing the smooth cheeks and fair fingers, he decided this was a very naive young master.
After finishing the cake, Wu Yi took photos to share on social media. His fans had been pestering him for an update.
“Taking photos? Why not include this? It fits the style.” Lin Baiyang pushed the succulent over.
“I’ll try.” It did look good, so Wu Yi took a few more shots, then sliced the cake to show the layers. He packed half for Lin Baiyang and put the rest in the fridge.
“Thanks for the cake, it looks great.” Lin Baiyang admired the box, saying he’d take a photo of it when he got home.
Wu Yi glanced at the clock, expecting Qing Zhu soon. He was excited but also confused that Lin Baiyang showed no signs of leaving. I gave him a box so he could take it home, why is he still sitting there?
He regretted accepting the gift. He could have just asked Qing Zhu to find a similar one online. However, it wasn’t in his nature to kick someone out, so he just started editing his photos.
Lin Baiyang took a photo of the cake box and asked curiously, “Do you have any favorite celebrities?”
“No.” Wu Yi shook his head immediately. He was never a fan of anyone.
Lin Baiyang seemed disappointed. After a moment, he put down his phone and looked at Wu Yi seriously. “Do you… dislike me?”
“Huh?” Wu Yi stopped editing, startled.
Lin Baiyang looked sincere and slightly hurt. “I sent you messages before and you didn’t reply. You even blocked me. I came today to apologize, but you’ve been so nice to me today. I don’t understand—is there a misunderstanding between us?”
“…”
Wu Yi was stunned. He had no idea Lin Baiyang had messaged him. “Did you… message the wrong person?” Maybe he added too many people and got mixed up, as A-Mu had warned.
“What do you mean?” Lin Baiyang looked displeased and showed him his phone.
Wu Yi leaned in. It was definitely his chat window. There were several messages from the first night, a “good morning” the next day, and then the dreaded red exclamation mark indicating he’d been blocked.
Wu Yi was shocked. He checked the profile; it was definitely his. He quickly checked his own phone and found Lin Baiyang in his blocked list.
“I…” He looked at the sad Lin Baiyang, truly confused. “I’m sorry. I must have clicked it by mistake.”
“So you didn’t mean to block me?”
“I guess not.” Wu Yi didn’t want to be mean, but added, “But I’m not really looking for friends. We should just be neighbors. You’re a big star, and I’m just a normal person.”
He was trying to say they shouldn’t hang out, but Lin Baiyang misinterpreted it. “So what? Stars are people too. I won’t look down on you.”
“Wait, what are you saying?”
“I mean, we are a good match.”
Wu Yi’s brain struggled to keep up. “Do you… like me?”
“Yes. Is it not obvious? I like you very much.”
Wu Yi had seen similar sentiments in the messages he hadn’t received. “What do you like about me?” They had only met once.
“You helped me. Remember the person who sneaked into my yard? That was a stalker fan who had been harassing me online. He might have followed me home. If you hadn’t noticed him, who knows what would have happened.”
Wu Yi knew about stalkers and found it scary, but he still felt it was strange. “Just because of that?”
“Of course not just that. Many people have helped me, but I don’t catch feelings for just anyone.” Lin Baiyang leaned in, staring into Wu Yi’s eyes. “You’re beautiful. You have a style I’ve never seen in the industry—unsullied. It’s hard not to be smitten.”
“Smitten?” Wu Yi couldn’t quite grasp the word.
Lin Baiyang rested his chin on his hand. “What about you? I’m not bad-looking, and I can be patient and gentle. Want to give it a try with me?”
Just then, the sound of the front door opening came from the foyer. Wu Yi immediately looked away, making Lin Baiyang frustrated. Bad timing.
He turned to see a tall man in black sportswear and a jacket, long hair flowing, with a face so perfect he looked like he belonged on a runway.
“You’re back!” Wu Yi’s voice was full of joy. He hopped around the counter to meet him. “I made a cake today. Guess the flavor.”
Qing Zhu glanced at the man at the bar, then looked down at Wu Yi, leaning in to sniff the sweet scent on him. “Chestnut.”
“How did you know!”
Qing Zhu didn’t answer. He turned his cold gaze toward Lin Baiyang. Seeing a trace of cream on the man’s cheek, his expression became even more frigid.
Wu Yi didn’t notice the tension. “He’s our neighbor. He gave me a succulent today, so I gave him some cake.”
With Qing Zhu back, the awkwardness vanished. Wu Yi stood by his side, looking at the stunned Lin Baiyang.
“This is your brother?” Lin Baiyang forced a smile. He stood up, but his height and looks, which he was usually proud of, felt shattered in comparison.
“Mhm.” Wu Yi wanted him to leave so he could talk to Qing Zhu.
“A gift from Qin Donglin.” Qing Zhu placed a box on the island.
Wu Yi’s eyes sparkled. He forgot all about Lin Baiyang as he opened it to find an antique sandalwood clock. “It’s beautiful! And it looks so old.”
“Bought it at an auction recently,” Qing Zhu said simply.
Watching them, Lin Baiyang suddenly remembered a news story about an antique clock that sold for 80 million. He realized he was looking at the real thing. Wait, Qin Donglin? The former chairman of Huanlin Enterprise? How do they know him, and why would he give such a gift?
“Qing-qing! What’s this?” Wu Yi cried out again.
Qing Zhu sat down with a glass of water. “Diamonds. Can’t you tell?”
“They’re huge!” Wu Yi held them up to the light. “I love blue diamonds. I’m putting these at the top of the cabinet.”
Lin Baiyang nearly choked. “Let me see.”
Wu Yi handed one over. The blue diamond was clear and vivid—clearly priceless. Lin Baiyang’s hand stiffened. He remembered a blue diamond auctioning for 150 million recently. He looked at the man checking his phone, unable to believe it. This has to be fake!
Wu Yi happily put it back and started eating his cake. Feeling out of place, Lin Baiyang stood up. “I’ll be going now.”
“Bye-bye.” Wu Yi didn’t even offer to see him out.
At the foyer, Lin Baiyang dropped a hint. “Um, can I talk to you outside for a second?”
Wu Yi looked at Qing Zhu as if asking for permission before washing his hands and running out.
Outside, the pressure lessened. Lin Baiyang was confused—why was a grown man still living with his brother and being controlled like this? They didn’t even look alike.
“What did you want to say?”
Lin Baiyang shook off his confusion. “I don’t think you should be too happy about those diamonds. I saw them at an auction before.”
“Oh? Did you bid too?”
“No,” Lin Baiyang laughed awkwardly. “But I heard they sold for over a hundred million to a wealthy collector. That blue diamond looks exactly like yours.”
Wu Yi blinked. “So expensive.”
“Yes. So… you understand, right?” He was practically screaming that they were fakes. He didn’t like the man inside—specifically his indifferent attitude. No one had ever ignored Lin Baiyang like that.
“Okay. Thank you, I’ll treasure them.”
Lin Baiyang’s smile froze. “Huh?”
“Go home and eat your cake before it loses its texture. Thanks for the plant, but don’t bring gifts next time.” Wu Yi waved and ran back inside.
Lin Baiyang realized he’d been brushed off. His face darkened. Was he mocking me?
…
“Qing-qing!” Wu Yi ran back to the sofa where Qing Zhu was reading news. “Is that diamond really worth a hundred million?”
Qing Zhu glanced at him with a lukewarm “Mhm.”
“So expensive! It’s definitely going on the top shelf.” Wu Yi ran upstairs to put it away. When he came back down, he noticed Qing Zhu hadn’t touched the cake. “Why aren’t you eating?”
“I don’t eat leftovers,” Qing Zhu said coldly.
“It’s not leftovers!” Wu Yi protested. “I just gave him a little bit. Ours is bigger. His is the leftovers.”
Qing Zhu paused. “What was he doing here?”
“Giving me a plant. I told you.” Wu Yi sat down with the cake, carefully splitting it in two and pouring two glasses of sparkling orange water. He took a photo and posted it: Afternoon tea with Brother.
Comments flooded in within seconds: Which brother? I’m confused. The one who gave the brooch? The piano one? Or the boat one? The protagonist of ‘108 Brothers Spoiling Me’ is here? I love chestnut cake, give me the big piece!
Wu Yi replied: The big piece is for my brother.
He felt satisfied seeing Qing Zhu eat. Although the man didn’t need food, he was learning to live like a real person.
Qing Zhu ate quickly but elegantly. He finished his cake and looked at Wu Yi with his dark red eyes. “Lin Baiyang confessed to you.”
“Huh?” Wu Yi’s mouth was full of cake. He swallowed and asked, “How did you know?”
“Not hard to guess.” Qing Zhu added, “His thoughts were written all over his face. Only you couldn’t see it.”
Wu Yi huffed. ” I’m not that stupid. I knew. But he brought a gift, I couldn’t just kick him out. That’s rude.”
“Don’t let him in next time,” Qing Zhu said. “Tell him I won’t allow it.”
“Isn’t that a bit lame? And I’ve met him several times…”
“Are you close to him?”
“No.”
“He’s just a neighbor. No different from a stranger.”
“Oh.” Wu Yi figured Lin Baiyang would believe it anyway, since Qing Zhu didn’t look like a friendly person. “Alright then.”
He tried to ask about Qing Zhu’s progress with Qin Donglin.
“No progress for now,” Qing Zhu said, taking off his jacket. He was wearing a V-neck black sweater Wu Yi had picked for him. It suited him perfectly.
Before Wu Yi could admire him for long, Qing Zhu said, “Speaking of which, you’re at that age.”
“Huh?”
“It’s the right age for dating. You can try if you like someone, but maintain your boundaries. Lin Baiyang isn’t right for you.”
Wu Yi was stunned by the calm, parental tone. “Qing-qing, are you possessed?” He hadn’t even considered if Lin Baiyang was “right” for him.
Qing Zhu stared at him with his familiar cold gaze.
“Why are you like Aunt Cen, always asking if I like girls? And that school gossip page, someone posted about me again two days ago.” Wu Yi felt hurt. He thought Qing Zhu understood him. Why was he asking this? Did he not trust him?
“What’s wrong with you now?” Wu Yi felt like Qing Zhu had changed since he started looking for his power. He used to be nice, but now he was cold and asked weird questions.
“Didn’t you say I have to stay by your side? Are you taking it back?” Wu Yi’s heart raced. He thought of the six servants—Fu An and Qin Donglin were loyal, but they were just servants.
Did Qing Zhu think he was replaceable now that he could find new followers? “Did you find someone else?”
Qing Zhu frowned. “What are you talking about?”
“Am I overthinking?” Wu Yi lost his temper. “You come back and start interrogating me. I ask you something serious and you ignore me. Did you find someone more ‘compatible’ and want me to leave?”
Qing Zhu looked displeased but stayed calm. “I said before, even if you want to leave, you can’t.”
“Then what do you mean?!”
Qing Zhu didn’t answer. He just stared with that cold, silent expression.
Wu Yi didn’t want to fight. He knew Qing Zhu was cold-blooded and didn’t care about others’ feelings. He would coax him when he was happy and turn cold when he was bored. As if I want to stay here!
He grabbed his phone and stormed out, leaving Qing Zhu alone.
As evening fell, his legs grew tired. He caught a ride with a security patrol and called Fu Liuye, sounding miserable.
Fu Liuye had a social event but picked him up anyway after hearing his voice. He listened to Wu Yi’s complaints the whole way.
“Anyway, he’s so mean to me! I’m not speaking to him ever again!”
Fu Liuye didn’t agree with the attitude. “You shouldn’t have let Lin Baiyang in. The gift was just a trick. A-Mu told you he had bad intentions. Mr. Qing might have been sarcastic, but he was looking out for you.”
“You’re taking his side too!” Wu Yi cried.
Fu Liuye patted his head. “I’m just saying you should be cautious. What if something happened today? Lin Baiyang doesn’t look like a good person.”
Wu Yi was fuming. “What could he do? Qing Zhu was coming back anyway. If he dared bully me, I’d beat him up and have Qing Zhu throw him out.”
Fu Liuye wanted to laugh at his cuteness, but then noticed Wu Yi’s red eyes. He stopped lecturing him. “Alright, don’t think about unhappy things. How about I introduce you to some friends tonight?”
Wu Yi wasn’t in the mood, but the thought of leaving Qing Zhu alone at home made him feel vindicated. He nodded. “Okay.”
He was going to have a great time out and not go home for days. Since he blamed me, let Qing Zhu reflect properly!
