Chapter 31: I Am Indeed Not a Kind Person…
Qin Yifan turned to leave after finishing his piece. Sensing a gaze from the distance, he looked back without hesitation to see a man standing on the other side of the lake. His footsteps paused for two seconds before he turned and left for good.
Wu Yi’s hands were cold at his sides. It was a long while before he heard someone approach.
“Who was that? He looks familiar.” It was Fu Liuye, returning with Cen Jin.
“It was Qin Yifan,” Wu Yi replied casually.
At the mention of that name, Fu Liuye recalled the incident at Xuanwei Restaurant. His expression darkened. “Was he bothering you?”
“No, just talking nonsense.” Wu Yi lifted his head and saw Qing Zhu approaching with Cen Yue. The man’s face remained expressionless, his deep red eyes fixed directly on Wu Yi.
Wu Yi blinked and whispered, “I didn’t even understand what he was saying.” He didn’t want to pursue the topic. He turned to Fu Liuye and asked, “Brother, where is the sightseeing boat you mentioned? I want to see it. My legs are so tired from walking.”
Fu Liuye noticed his low spirits and pointed the way. “Let’s go now.”
Throughout the day, Qing Zhu did not participate in their activities. He had disappeared on his own at noon, and when it was time to head home, he reappeared behind them like a ghost.
Wu Yi was someone who wore his emotions on his sleeve. By the end of the day, even little Cen Jin had noticed the change. She abandoned her mother and brother to hold Wu Yi’s hand, distracting him with silly questions and childish stories until he finally relaxed.
Before parting ways, Cen Yue and Fu Liuye were still worried and invited them to dinner. “The housekeeper has everything ready. Why not eat before heading back? We even have a room prepared for Mr. Qing if you’d like to stay the night.”
Wu Yi was tempted; he hadn’t spent much time with Aunt Cen lately. But before he could speak, the person beside him declined.
“We have things to do.” Qing Zhu didn’t use polite pleasantries like “next time”; he simply stated the fact.
Seeing this, Cen Yue didn’t push. Fu Liuye, however, turned to Wu Yi before getting into the car and asked right in front of Qing Zhu, “What about you? Do you want to come?”
Wu Yi looked at him in surprise, then at Qing Zhu, who was already in the driver’s seat. Touched as he was, he shook his head. “No, I’ll go with Qing-qing to handle things.”
Only then did Fu Liuye feel at ease. “Alright. Get some rest tonight.”
“Mhm. Bye-bye, Brother.”
The car drove off. Wu Yi felt drowsy the moment he sat down. He knew Qing Zhu must have guessed he was upset, but why hadn’t he asked? His mind was a mess of thoughts regarding Qin Yifan’s warnings.
Knowing Qing Zhu for so long accounted for a huge portion of his life. Yet, he wasn’t so narcissistic to think he truly understood the man. After all, Qing Zhu had said he wasn’t his “true self” right now; his powers were sealed, and this fragmented form was different in habit and consciousness from his original state. Wu Yi looked forward to seeing Qing Zhu fully restored, but he wanted to witness it himself, not hear about it from others.
Qin Yifan became a monster after absorbing Qing Zhu’s energy, but there could be many factors involved. Why blame Qing Zhu? Wu Yi reasoned. Fu An and Qin Donglin, who knew the ‘original’ Qing Zhu, never wrote a bad word about him.
As he thought, he felt foolish for letting a few words ruin his afternoon. He prepared to strike up a conversation, but when he looked out the window, the scenery was unfamiliar.
“Where are we?” This wasn’t the way home. They were heading in the opposite direction, past a familiar mall. Heavens, is he taking me somewhere to silence me because I gave him the cold shoulder today? Wu Yi was horrified.
Qing Zhu glanced at him, seemingly reading his thoughts, and let out a soft, low laugh. The ambiguous laugh made Wu Yi even more uneasy. He didn’t dare ask more. Moments later, the city lights vanished, replaced by lush greenery and rolling hills.
“Where is this?” He peered out. They were driving up a slope toward scattered villas with large windows glowing with warm light. This was an area he had never entered. “Qing Zhu, did you take a wrong turn?”
The car slowed to a halt. Something was tossed onto him—it was the scarf he’d left in the back seat. He followed Qing Zhu out of the car. The area was vast and quiet, offering a breathtaking view of the city skyline in the distance.
Behind them stood a villa hidden within a garden. The fence was clean and beautiful, wrapped in new spring buds.
“Go in and see,” Qing Zhu said.
Wu Yi looked at him with bright, disbelieving eyes. Qing Zhu shook his head slightly and added, “See if you like it.”
Stepping into the garden felt like a dream. The front yard was filled with plants, and a massive tree stood near the fence, its new green leaves reaching the second and third-floor windows. A large swing sat to the side.
Inside, the heater was already on. The wooden floors felt warm. While not fully furnished, it already felt like a home. The villa had an open-plan layout, making it feel spacious. Upstairs, the second floor featured a sunken lounge area and a massive walk-in closet with jewelry displays. The bedroom was wide, filled with soft, cute furniture.
Wu Yi’s nose crinkled as he fought back tears. He turned to Qing Zhu at the door. “What’s upstairs?”
“A storage room and a terrace.” Qing Zhu then gave a full report: “The basement has a gym and a home theater. There’s a pool in the backyard. When it gets warmer, you should learn how to swim.”
The room was perfect. It even had a pedestal for the ornaments Shen Yue had given him.
“Are we living here from now on?”
“Mhm. We move in a few days.”
Wu Yi walked to the bookshelf, fiddling with a small decoration. “You never told me about this.”
“I bought it a long time ago. Renovations took a while,” Qing Zhu said plainly.
Wu Yi remained silent, taking in every detail of the house that had been designed perfectly to his tastes. He walked over to Qing Zhu and wrapped his arms around his waist. “I’m sorry.”
Qing Zhu didn’t move, just laughed softly. “What do you have to be sorry for?”
If it were any other time, Wu Yi would have snapped back. But seeing this carefully prepared gift, he couldn’t find the words. He pressed his face against Qing Zhu’s chest, his eyes stinging. “I shouldn’t have talked to Qin Yifan.”
It was a rare moment of admitting fault. Qing Zhu remained still, seemingly indifferent. But Wu Yi was stuck in a loop of guilt. “Am I being immature? You were preparing a surprise, and I was ignoring you. I know you won’t be mad, but I feel bad.”
The house was everything he had ever dreamed of. Years ago, he had mentioned in a half-asleep daze that he didn’t like high-rises or lake views. He wanted a “tree-view” house with a yard and privacy—a place without dark corners where “scary people” might hide in his imagination. He had said it once, and now, a house meeting every requirement was standing before him.
“Actually, he’s right. I am not a kind person,” Qing Zhu’s cold voice rang out.
Wu Yi looked up, his eyes watery and filled with a flicker of unease.
“But even so, you can’t leave.”
Wu Yi blinked, his lashes damp. He looked confused by the statement. Qing Zhu let out a low laugh at his dazed expression and pinched Wu Yi’s soft cheek. “Angry?”
Wu Yi shook his head. He was overwhelmed by a mix of sadness, relief, and confusion.
“From the moment we met, your life was no longer your own. We agreed on this long ago. You can ask for anything, and I will fulfill it—except for freedom. You likely won’t have that for the rest of your life.”
Qing Zhu was heartless; he never sugarcoated things. Even when stealing someone’s happiness, he was terrifyingly blunt. He expected a protest, but Wu Yi just stared for a few seconds and nodded.
“Oh.” His brain was mush. He buried his face back into Qing Zhu’s chest. “Where do you live?”
He felt Qing Zhu’s body stiffen for a split second before he replied, “Downstairs.”
“Oh.” Wu Yi didn’t ask further. Instead, he said thoughtfully, “I want a pool table in the basement. I want to learn billiards.”
“Mhm.” Qing Zhu had said he’d fulfill his requests; he wouldn’t refuse now.
Wu Yi didn’t let go, leaning into him like he had no bones. “And a fridge in the theater. And a very soft sofa—the kind that massages. I want to eat snacks while getting a massage.”
“Alright.”
“And… can we buy a new car? I saw someone at school driving a Porsche, and people were taking pictures. I want one too.”
He prattled on until Qing Zhu frowned, losing patience. “Buy whatever you want yourself.”
“You won’t come with me?” Wu Yi looked up, displeased. “You just said you’d follow my wishes, and now you’re backing out. What a calculating man.”
“…” Qing Zhu frowned. “I’ll go when I have time.”
“That’s more like it.” Wu Yi looked at the big bed in the room. “I feel like this bed isn’t big enough. I want a bigger one.” He spread his arms to show the size.
Qing Zhu was puzzled. “Why do you need such a big bed for yourself?” He remembered Wu Yi used to be so cowardly he had to sleep pressed against a wall.
“So we can sleep together sometimes! How are we both going to fit on this?”
Wu Yi walked to the bed, gesturing for an extra half-meter of width. “Look, the room is huge anyway. A bigger bed makes it feel cozy.”
“…” Qing Zhu was helpless. Looking at Wu Yi’s innocent face, he wanted to laugh. “You’re a grown man and you still want to sleep with me?”
“Ah? Is it inappropriate?” Wu Yi blinked innocently. He’d been thinking about it for days. If Qing Zhu slept with him, maybe he wouldn’t have insomnia anymore. He always felt safe where Qing Zhu was.
Reading the emotion in his eyes, Qing Zhu didn’t speak. But the brief silence before he nodded lingered in Wu Yi’s heart, as if the man had something he wasn’t saying.
…
A few days later, everyone knew Wu Yi was moving. Li Qingquan, who was busy exorcising spirits in the suburbs, promised to attend the housewarming. Cen Yue arrived at Blue Bay the very next day, marveled by the unique garden. She initially thought Wu Yi had designed it himself and scolded him for not telling her.
Wu Yi didn’t have the heart to tell her it was actually Qing Zhu’s work.
They invited their friends over for a meal. While they were moving their things, most were new purchases. The gifts from Cen Yue and Fu Liuye that previously had no room now filled two large cabinets.
“One day, I’ll fill this whole place up,” Wu Yi hummed, pointing at Qing Zhu. “Then, I’ll turn your room into my walk-in closet too.”
Qing Zhu looked up from his phone. “If you don’t mind your clothes getting dirty, I don’t mind sleeping on a pile of clothes.”
“How can you be like that!” Wu Yi threw an apple from a fruit bowl at him; Qing Zhu caught it effortlessly.
Feeling that Wu Yi was being a nuisance, Qing Zhu pointed to the fruit boxes on the floor. “Don’t you like making friends? Go see who the neighbors are.”
Wu Yi was confused. “How? That’s so awkward.”
Qing Zhu looked like he wanted to say something, but instead, he searched for “housewarming etiquette” on his phone. After Wu Yi finished reading it with wide eyes, Qing Zhu took the phone back. “Go. See if you can find another ‘good brother’ to bring home.”
Wu Yi was speechless but picked up a fruit gift box. “What if the neighbor is a sister?”
Qing Zhu went up to the terrace to sunbathe, either not hearing him or ignoring him.
Blue Bay was lush. Wu Yi saw people walking dogs on the lawn in the distance. He liked animals and watched them as he walked. He noticed a few people looking his way and gave a polite smile. They waved back.
He reached the nearest house. The villa was a similar model, but the yard was bland—just basic greenery and gravel paths. It looked lifeless. Is anyone even living here?
He peered through the low gate. Just as he hesitated to call out, the front door opened. A man in a suit stepped out, looking at him sternly. “What are you doing?”
It was a middle-aged man with a goatee. He looked displeased, as if he suspected Wu Yi was a thief. It’s a man, and at this age, I have to call him Uncle. So Qing Zhu wins.
Wu Yi kept his smile polite and held up the gift box. “Hello, Uncle. I’m your new neighbor. I just moved in next door. I bought some sweet fruit and wanted to share.”
He had searched for the lines beforehand, so he was a bit stiff. To his surprise, the man didn’t even step out of the house. Though he relaxed slightly upon hearing “neighbor,” his face remained cold. “No thanks. Keep it for yourself.”
Wu Yi was stunned. He thought the man was just being polite and tried to say more, but the man’s brow furrowed impatiently. “Is there anything else? If not, don’t stand outside, or I’ll call security.”
…
The walk back was heavy. Wu Yi felt totally deflated. Entering the house, he saw Qing Zhu leaning against the third-floor terrace railing.
Wu Yi dropped the fruit box, ran upstairs in his slippers, and pouted. Qing Zhu looked at him for two seconds. “What? They didn’t take it?”
“Not just that!” Wu Yi angrily recounted the man’s words, exaggerating a bit. “He told me to get lost or he’d call security. I’ve never met someone like that! I didn’t do anything, but he looked at me like I was a thief!”
Qing Zhu finally understood. He suppressed a laugh. “Well, you saved some fruit.”
“Who cares about the fruit!”
Qing Zhu set his phone down. “Then what do you want to do?”
“I don’t know! I’ve never been treated like this.”
“Then kill him.”
“…” Wu Yi froze. Anger turned to shock. “Qing-qing, what are you saying?”
Qing Zhu looked at him calmly. Wu Yi’s hair was messy from his frustrated scratching, his eyes wide—he looked like a startled kitten. “You didn’t know what to do, but you felt offended. So, do something to vent.”
“I can’t do that! I’m mad, but… not that mad.” Wu Yi looked at Qing Zhu, worried he was serious. “Maybe he was in the middle of something important, or he’s had a bad day. Maybe he was robbed recently, so everyone looks like a thief. Either way, he was just rude. It’s not worth… killing him.”
He whispered the last part, afraid someone might be eavesdropping. Qing Zhu laughed and rubbed Wu Yi’s head. “Since you’ve comforted yourself, what else is there to say?”
Wu Yi looked at him seriously. “You can’t do it either.”
“Mhm.” Qing Zhu went back to his phone.
“And you can’t secretly target him,” Wu Yi added.
Qing Zhu frowned and looked up. “Say one more word and I’ll make sure he can never speak again.”
Wu Yi stared in disbelief, but intimidated by the threat, he stomped downstairs.
…
The next day, Cen Yue and Li Qingquan were coming over. Wu Yi stayed up late adjusting the dessert menu. By midnight, it was pitch black outside. He pressed a button to close the curtains automatically and prepared to brush his teeth.
Passing the floor-to-ceiling window, he saw a dark shadow flicker in the distance. He thought Qing Zhu had slipped out, but the man had been in the theater all night.
The shadow moved slowly across the lawn and slipped into a yard. Heavens! He realized his room light would give him away, so he quickly turned it off.
In the dark, everything became clear. A person in black was climbing over a wall. Their movements were skilled but the wall was high, taking them a while to clear. If he remembered correctly, that house belonged to… the rude neighbor!
Wu Yi was shocked. First, that there was a thief here, and second, that the thief chose the most paranoid house. Is this fate?
He wanted to shout, but he was too far away. If he scared the thief, they might escape into the mountains.
Suddenly, the curtain behind him was pulled back. A chill ran down his spine. Thinking the thief had teleported, he screamed.
The light turned on. Qing Zhu was looking at him with a complicated expression. “What are you doing?”
Wu Yi was sitting on the floor in his pajamas, clutching the curtains. Seeing it was Qing Zhu, he grabbed the man’s hand and pulled him to the glass. “Qing-qing, look!”
Qing Zhu scanned the distance just as the person in black disappeared into the neighbor’s yard.
“I saw someone sneaking around!” Wu Yi whispered. “Should we call the police?”
Qing Zhu said, “If they’re just stealing, it won’t take long.”
“What?” Wu Yi didn’t understand. “We still have to call the police.”
Qing Zhu let out a laugh, looking down at him with interest. “You know, they might think the thief is you.”
“Why?!”
“You were seen snooping around earlier today and got kicked out. They might think you’re back for revenge.”
Wu Yi panicked. He couldn’t wait for the police now. He clung to Qing Zhu’s arm. “Qing-qing, go catch him!”
Qing Zhu smirked. “You’re ordering me? What’s the trade?”
“I don’t know!” Wu Yi whimpered, terrified the thief would get away. “I’m already yours! What else do you want?”
These words pleased Qing Zhu. He relaxed and scratched Wu Yi’s chin like he was a kitten. “Fine. You’ll owe me.”
He pulled his hand away, stood up, and pushed open the balcony door. A cold wind rushed in. Wu Yi squinted. By the time he opened his eyes, the figure that had been on the balcony was already in the neighbor’s yard.
