Chapter 25: Stripping Wu Yi from His Soft Clothes…
Wu Yi held his breath, not daring to step forward for a long time. It wasn’t until a dark shadow fell beside him that he finally found his voice.
“Qing-qing, so this is what you look like.”
Qing Zhu moved to his side, looking down slightly to study the person on the bed. The emotion in his crimson eyes was detached and cold—totally unlike someone looking at a long-lost body, but rather like observing a stranger.
“Should we take him away now?” Wu Yi rubbed his palms together, eager to start.
But realizing the person on the bed was Qing Zhu, he felt a strange sense of awkwardness. Was it appropriate to just… do this right in front of him?
Qing Zhu reached out, his hand hovering over the body as if detecting something. “Take him.”
“Okay.”
Wu Yi rubbed his hands and moved to help the person up, but before he could touch a single strand of hair, the body sat up—slowly and stiffly—as if controlled by some invisible force.
Startled, Wu Yi’s mouth fell open. Like a cat with bristling fur, he scrambled behind Qing Zhu. Watching the body stand up on its own and start walking, he realized Qing Zhu was using spiritual energy to puppet it.
“Scared the life out of me,” he whispered, instinctively grabbing Qing Zhu’s arm, his voice full of grievance.
“You’re actually afraid?”
“You look so scary, of course I’m afraid.”
Qing Zhu patted the top of his head, ignoring the jab. Noticing Wu Yi couldn’t resist looking back, Qing Zhu placed an arm around his back, pulling him closer into his side. Wu Yi finally felt a sense of security huddled against him. He stopped looking around and kept his eyes fixed on that tall back as they exited.
After walking for a while, the body’s movements became less stiff and sluggish. It began to look like a living person—spine straight, frame slender, moving with a natural grace that projected a certain coldness.
It was exactly as Wu Yi had imagined the “original” Qing Zhu should look.
Back in the Qin living room via the cabinet, Wu Yi remembered to pull his hood up. He followed the body out of the courtyard and opened the car door for it. After looping through a pre-planned route a few times, Wu Yi clumsily climbed over the fence of A-Mu’s back gate, let “Qing Zhu” sit in the car first, and then said goodbye to A-Mu.
A-Mu, who had just finished working out, came out in a tight-fitting sports tee. He didn’t question Wu Yi’s bizarre visit; instead, he grinned and invited him in for a fitness meal.
Wu Yi, having completed his mission, was in a great mood. Checking the time, he muttered, “I don’t need to cut fat. My brother is treating me to dinner; I’m heading there now.”
“You sure have a lot of brothers,” A-Mu tutted, leaning against the doorframe. “Do you call Shen Yue ‘brother’ too?”
Wu Yi thought he was being weird. “Didn’t you ask me to call you brother?” He originally called him Uncle. He didn’t say that out loud, but A-Mu made the connection himself, and his expression turned odd. He finally stopped teasing.
The men Fu Liuye had provided remained quiet. They had helped move some boxes into the car earlier at A-Mu’s house. Upon seeing a strange man resting with his eyes closed in the backseat, they showed no surprise, professionally driving the car to the Fengyue building.
Once they arrived, Wu Yi sat up straight. Using the car’s interior light, he leaned in close to the body, carefully studying that cold, sharp face.
“Qing-qing, you’re actually quite handsome.”
Belatedly, he took back the casual insults he’d hurled at Qing Zhu back at the Qin house. In response, he only heard a cold snort in his mind. Feeling guilty, he reached out to touch the face but felt shy under Qing Zhu’s own gaze. Finally, he just touched the jet-black hair falling by the arm. It was soft and smooth, carrying a faint chill.
The phone rang, snapping him out of his daze. He realized he had been staring at Qing Zhu’s face for quite a while. Flustered, he quickly answered.
“Is everything settled?” It was Fu Liuye. His men had clearly reported back. His voice was gentle but carried a hint of alertness. “Have you eaten? Since you’re downstairs, want to go out for dinner with Brother?”
Wu Yi instinctively looked at Qing Zhu.
“Go.”
“Then you…”
“I’ll watch over things here.”
Wu Yi hesitated. “Alright.”
He took off his cloak, folded it, and placed it beside Qing Zhu’s body. He got out of the car and went up to find Fu Liuye. The assistants were already familiar with him, greeting him with polite smiles as they guided him to the office.
“You’re here.” Fu Liuye was already in his overcoat. Noticing Wu Yi’s collar was messy, he reached out to straighten it. “Hungry?”
Wu Yi puffed his cheeks and nodded. “A little.”
“Let’s go eat.” Fu Liuye placed an arm around his shoulder and led him out.
Once they were seated at the restaurant and Wu Yi had mostly filled his stomach, the man across from him finally spoke.
“I heard you brought someone back with you this time. Is he trustworthy?”
Wu Yi, busy eating an oyster with a fork, looked up with a small smudge of oil on his lip. “Ah?”
Fu Liuye pulled out a napkin and wiped it for him, repeating patiently, “You shouldn’t stay with people you don’t know well. It’s unsafe.”
“He’s very trustworthy,” Wu Yi replied, recovering.
“That’s good.” Fu Liuye was never one to pry, but his gaze lingered on Wu Yi’s wrist for a moment. “Where is Mr. Qing?”
Wu Yi’s face stiffened. “Um… he’s busy with something. He’ll be back later.”
“I see.” Fu Liuye nodded, not pressing further.
Wu Yi was terrified throughout the meal. He wasn’t cut out for keeping secrets, especially from someone as good to him as Fu Liuye. He felt a constant, nagging guilt.
After dinner, as they waited for the car, Fu Liuye patted his head. “Shall I drive you home?”
“I’ll take the car you arranged for me. I still have things in there,” Wu Yi said with a sweet smile.
Fu Liuye paused, then said, “Okay. I’ll see you to Fengyue then.”
Arriving at the garage, Wu Yi jumped out with his jacket over his shoulders. He waved without looking back and ran into the basement. Fu Liuye watched the slight figure from the window for a long time before looking away.
…
“How is it?”
Back in the driver’s seat, Wu Yi turned around eagerly, only to find the body still sitting there, deathly still and stiff. The small black snake was coiled around those slender fingers, seemingly resting; it lacked its usual ruby-red pupils.
Wu Yi watched for a few seconds. Seeing no reaction, he turned to start the car and head home.
Almost the instant he parked at his building, there was a slight movement in the back. Wu Yi looked over and saw the little snake had already slid down the seat and onto his shoulder. It was clearly awake now.
“No one around.”
Wu Yi checked the surroundings, parked closer to the entrance, and climbed into the back to wrap the body in the large cloak. He clapped his hands, satisfied. “Let’s go home.”
The body moved slowly, pushing the door open and stepping out in one fluid motion. However, the cloak that was far too big for Wu Yi looked small on him, like a mere accessory. Wu Yi grumbled as he parked the car, and it wasn’t until they were upstairs that he started complaining.
“Why did you make yourself so big?”
Qing Zhu had no answer. He puppetted the body to lie on the sofa.
“And if you can control it yourself, I wouldn’t have asked Fu Liuye for help. I thought I’d need people to carry your body out.” Wu Yi wasn’t joking; he’d been worried about this plan for days, fearing something would be exposed.
Qing Zhu said, “Even if people carried it, they wouldn’t talk.”
“Then what? I can’t move it,” Wu Yi sat in the armchair, his head feeling dizzy. “I finally know why there’s so much ‘silencing witnesses’ in ancient times. It’s really dangerous.”
“It doesn’t matter if you found help. They have other uses.”
Wu Yi just assumed he was being open-minded. He leaned back to rest. Seeing Qing Zhu’s body right there, he finally felt himself relax. But following that was a wave of discomfort he’d been suppressing for days. He slid down the sofa, kicked off his shoes, and curled into a small ball.
“Qing-qing, my head feels even dizzier.”
A black mist fell on his forehead. “You have a fever. Take medicine.”
When sick, Wu Yi reverted to his fragile, difficult personality. He kicked his feet reluctantly. “You get it for me. I don’t want to move.”
Qing Zhu said nothing. When he returned, he held water and medicine. He propped Wu Yi up against his chest, fed him the medicine, and carried him to the bedroom. Before he could put him on the bed, the boy opened his bloodshot eyes and protested.
“Dirty! I want to shower!”
Qing Zhu’s voice turned cold. “I didn’t notice you being this clean normally.”
“Liar! I’m always hygienic.” Wu Yi gripped the fabric of his front, humming softly. “I don’t want to go to bed. I haven’t showered or changed.”
“You can’t shower with a fever,” Qing Zhu stated, aware of such common knowledge.
“Then wipe me down.”
“…”
Qing Zhu had no choice. He placed Wu Yi on the sofa and swept into the bathroom like a gust of wind, then back again.
He began stripping Wu Yi from his soft jacket and sweater, using a warm towel to gently wipe his cheeks and arms. Throughout, Wu Yi was like a ragdoll, letting himself be handled—until the hand reached his waistband.
Qing Zhu’s face darkened. “Are we wiping or not?”
The face buried in the soft pillow turned over, flushed with a redness that wasn’t there before, looking like a ripe peach.
“Not there,” he said in a muffled voice, seemingly shy.
Qing Zhu stopped pushing. He caught Wu Yi’s thin wrist, pulled off the white socks, and wiped his pale toes clean. He placed him on the bed, found pajamas in the dresser, changed the “ragdoll,” and tucked him in.
Exhausted, Qing Zhu breathed a sigh of relief. This process was more tiring than finding his own body. Thankfully, the clean Wu Yi was finally satisfied and made no further demands.
When Qing Zhu returned after tidying up, he saw the person on the bed staring at him with watery blue eyes, silent and incredibly well-behaved.
The mist floated over. “What now?”
Wu Yi, feeling dizzy and lacking the energy to be difficult, whispered, “Are you going to start merging with your body today? How long will it take?”
“Unsure.”
Wu Yi rolled over to lie on his stomach. His long, thick lashes fluttered like small fans with his breathing, showing a vulnerability and confusion only seen in the deep of night.
“Then start a little sooner. I’ll miss you if it takes too long.”
The black mist transformed into a slender snake and rested on the pillow. Those crimson eyes were naturally a bit eerie, but now they only brought him peace.
“We’ll talk in the morning.”
“Eh?” Wu Yi didn’t understand why they should waste a night, but the peaceful atmosphere was too relaxing. Before he could figure it out, his eyelids grew heavy, and he slowly lost consciousness.
In a daze, he felt a cool temperature on his forehead. Only when the fever seemed to break did the touch withdraw.
…
After a good night’s sleep, the bracelet on his wrist was black and lustrous again. The body that had been on the sofa had been moved to the guest room, surrounded by a faint black mist—a natural protective field.
Wu Yi stared for a few seconds, then closed the door. Looking at the empty house, a nameless feeling rose in his chest. He regretted it a little; he shouldn’t have used Qing Zhu’s money to buy such a large house. When he was alone, it felt so lonely.
A few days later, the Spring Festival arrived. Cen Yue, not wanting him to be alone, had invited him early on, but Wu Yi never agreed. He played at the Fu house during the day but returned home at night. With the dessert shop closed, he had nothing to do but stay at home.
On the third day of the New Year, Auntie Cen suggested a family vacation, but he declined, leaving the Fu house empty too. Outside, the cold air was filled with the noise of fireworks, but he ignored it, curled up in his warm home.
While catching up on a variety show, a sudden knock came at the door. Drowsy, Wu Yi thought he was hallucinating until he heard it again. Glancing at the closed guest room door, he warily approached the entrance. Without even putting on shoes, he checked the monitor and saw an unexpected person.
“Li Qingquan!”
The door flew open. Outside was Li Qingquan, carrying a large backpack. He looked dusty and travel-worn, standing there with a grin like someone who had just been dug out from underground.
“Happy New Year, Happy New Year!” Li Qingquan squeezed inside. Feeling the warmth of the room, he couldn’t help but sigh. “Ah! Your place is much better.”
Wu Yi didn’t dare get close to him. He backed up and opened the shoe cabinet, letting him find slippers. “Where have you been? You’re so dirty.”
Li Qingquan dropped his bag and began a half-hour rant. Recounting his hardships with tears and snot, he was shooed into the bathroom by Wu Yi. His voice was so loud even the water couldn’t drown it out.
“Anyway, I took trains all the way here. I’m practically sour. No cabs would take me from the station, so I had to take buses and subways. Look at my bag… the bottom is worn through.”
Wu Yi looked disgustedly at the large black bag on the foyer rug, covering his nose. When Li Qingquan emerged from the shower, Wu Yi said muffledly, “You have to send the rug to the dry cleaners if it’s dirty.”
Li Qingquan’s face changed instantly. “What happened to our friendship? You’re charging me for dry cleaning? Did you forget our perfect chemistry when we were ‘conning’ people at the Fu house?”
“I didn’t con anyone,” Wu Yi puffed his cheeks.
“Of course you did. I even cooperated. I’ve never done anything so unrefined in my life.”
Speechless, Wu Yi said, “Fine, you take the rug to the cleaners, and I’ll pay.”
“Deal!” Li Qingquan wasn’t afraid of labor; his biggest worry was a lack of money. He flopped happily onto the sofa, then looked around. “Where’s your ‘dear’?”
Wu Yi said dismissively, “He’s busy.”
“Oh, good.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Wu Yi looked at him suspiciously.
Li Qingquan watched TV casually. “I’m just scared, okay? I always feel unsettled around your ‘dear’.”
Wu Yi snorted. “You’re just a coward.”
“You’re just used to it. Who wouldn’t be scared?”
“Say it again!” Wu Yi didn’t like hearing others talk about Qing Zhu like that. Although he sometimes found him overbearing, it was one thing for him to say it and another for others. Only after Li Qingquan apologized did he look away.
With Li Qingquan there, the house became much livelier. Wu Yi remained idle, sharing his daily life online.
Blogger, your updates are too fast! Wasn’t this bracelet by appointment only? Get used to it. The only question is, which family is this young master from? So envious. Can I be born into this family in my next life?
Wu Yi rubbed his eyes while lying on the bed. He accidentally clicked a fan’s profile. As he was about to exit, he saw a pinned post with 20,000 likes.
Which direction do I need to pray in to be born this lucky?!
The photo showed a man in a suit sitting among guests, fingers slightly raised, while an assistant beside him held up a bidding paddle.
It was… Fu Liuye!
Wu Yi was startled. He clicked in and read the content, his heart filled with a mixture of emotions.
Ugh, so jealous. Turns out the big boss attended the banquet just to buy jewelry for his ‘younger brother.’ A rich daddy and a spoiled young master—I am totally shipping this CP!!! Who invented this CP? I’m taking a big bite. Older/Younger dynamic? Wait… they’re brothers, you can ship that? Please, were you even paying attention? President Fu of Fengyue is an only child. His mother announced an adopted daughter recently, there is no ‘young master’ in the family. An interview said it’s a friend’s child. Fine, I approve of this marriage. Remember to invite me to the head table.
“…”
Wu Yi was dumbstruck. He let out a “Wow.” What was wrong with netizens these days? They cared about these tiny things? And what did “shipping CP” mean? Did he and Fu Liuye look like partners?
Just as he was thinking, he scrolled down and saw a comment with a massive amount of replies.
You’re all shipping like crazy, but have you considered that the ‘brother’ might be really ugly? Maybe he’s 170cm tall and 170kg? Could you still ship it then? You guys just like handsome faces. Reality will shatter your illusions.] [So? He hasn’t shown his face. How do you know he’s ugly?] [Why are you here? If we don’t ship handsome people, are we supposed to ship you?] [Ignore this bitter hater. Everyone, look at this blogger @YiYi. I always imagine the young master looks like this.] [Aghhhh this hand! I’m dead! And there’s a photo with Shen Yue, so cute!] [Mom, I’m projecting!
Wu Yi grew more shocked as he read. He instinctively wanted to clear his profile, but looking at the updates that had earned so many likes and comments, he couldn’t bear to do it. He had worked hard on this account. He even had loyal fans who sent him private messages of comfort when they saw people hating on him.
He wasn’t going to delete it.
But if it exposed something… his heart skipped a beat. Wu Yi suddenly snapped out of it. Why should he be afraid of being found out? Being Fu Liuye’s “brother” wasn’t anything shameful. Besides, who knew how he and Fu Liuye met? The Doll Guardian was just a legend and had never been linked to Fu Liuye anyway.
Thinking this through, he let out a sigh of relief. Before he could decide whether to reply to those tags, a message popped up.
Qin Yifan: Where are you? Qin Yifan: Answer the phone
A video call came through immediately. Wu Yi was a bit uneasy and didn’t answer. He muted his phone, and a voice call appeared—still Qin Yifan.
After several attempts, Wu Yi took a deep breath and decided to answer to see what he wanted. He hit “Accept.” The person on the other end didn’t seem to realize he’d picked up and was talking to someone nearby. Because of the distance and the speed of the talking, Wu Yi couldn’t hear clearly.
“Qin Yifan,” he said. The other side finally went quiet.
Wu Yi sensed something was wrong. He pressed his ear to the receiver. He could vaguely catch several different breathing sounds on the other side, making his skin crawl.
“Why are you calling me?”
“I’m asking you, did you come looking for me before the New Year?” Qin Yifan was clearly lowering his voice, but his excitement made him sound fierce.
Wu Yi instinctively denied it. “How is that possible? Why would I look for you?”
“Is that so? You better not be lying,” Qin Yifan’s voice was cold. “Otherwise, something big is going to happen.”
Wu Yi knew they must have returned to the Qin house and guessed they’d found something. He wasn’t panicked; he even asked deliberately, “What big thing?”
“…”
There was no more response. Qin Yifan hung up.
Wu Yi exhaled and sat cross-legged, but he didn’t feel relaxed. Still, his plan was perfect. The Qin family wouldn’t find evidence. At most, the security footage showed someone in a cloak.
But who could prove that person was him?
