No One Else Will Do But You - Chapter 91
Three years have passed. Shu Luo graduated with a Master’s degree in Medicine from Canada and returned to S City. Despite prestigious offers abroad, he chose to work as a doctor in a local general hospital, starting from the bottom in the ER without using his family connections.
On his very first day, he faced a crisis that would change his life.
The Outbreak
A patient was rushed in with severe bleeding from the nose and mouth after returning from Africa. While the senior doctor, Zhang Rui, suspected Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome (HFRS), Shu Luo’s instincts screamed otherwise. During the surgery, blood splattered onto Shu Luo’s face.
“This isn’t HFRS! It’s Marburg virus! Everyone out, now!” Shu Luo roared. He knew the terrifying nature of the Marburg virus—a cousin of Ebola with a mortality rate ranging from 25% to 100%.
He immediately quarantined himself and the patient, shouting for the patient’s family to be tested and isolated as well. The hospital descended into chaos. The Director was horrified to learn that Shu Luo—the son of the hospital board’s chairman—was the one exposed.
The Quarantine
Shu Luo sat in the isolation ward, separated from the world by a glass wall. His patient, Lin Shaofeng, woke up and confessed he had tried to save a bleeding green monkey in Uganda.
“Do you have no common sense?” Shu Luo sighed, his heart heavy. “I’m Shu Luo, twenty-five, with a fiancé… and now we’re in this together.”
Shu Luo felt a deep, familiar fear. A year ago, during a rescue mission in Africa, he had survived a different viral outbreak after three days of a 41∘C fever and his heart stopping for a full minute. He had never told Jiang Mu. Now, he wondered if his luck had finally run out.
The Confrontation
Jiang Mu arrived, clad in a sterile suit, his eyes red with fury and grief. He pressed his palm against the glass.
“Shu Luo, did you think I didn’t know about the H3 infection last year?” Jiang Mu’s voice cracked. “Are you trying to disappear from my life again?”
Shu Luo was stunned. He hadn’t realized Jiang Mu knew his secret. Looking at the man he loved, Shu Luo began to cry. “I don’t want to leave you. I want to marry you, travel the world… but I couldn’t just watch a life slip away. I’m a doctor.”
“You will be fine. I’m waiting for you,” Jiang Mu promised, his nails digging into his palms to keep from breaking down.
The Result
The wait was agonizing. That afternoon, Lin Shaofeng’s condition plummeted. Despite Shu Luo’s desperate efforts at physical cooling, the patient succumbed to the virus.
Suddenly, a nurse ran toward the Director with a report. “Shu Luo is negative! The results are negative!”
Shu Luo had been spared once more. However, the tragedy remained: Lin Shaofeng, his wife, and their eight-year-old child all passed away within a week.
The Aftermath
To help Shu Luo recover from the trauma, Jiang Mu took him to the Maldives. Lying on the beach, Shu Luo looked at the blue sky and sighed. “Maybe I should change my name to ‘Shu Lucky.'”
Jiang Mu took his hand and kissed it tenderly. “You are my luck. Thank you for bringing back a healthy Shu Luo.”
“Why so sentimental all of a sudden?” Shu Luo teased.
“Let’s get married,” Jiang Mu said, his gaze fixed on the horizon.
“Okay,” Shu Luo smiled. “Right now?”
They realized that in a world full of unpredictable dangers, the only true safety is the person standing beside you. They had become each other’s luck, a bond forged in fire and quiet devotion, ready to walk the rest of the way together.
