No One Else Will Do But You - Chapter 70
A flashy, luxurious white Audi R8 spyder sat parked on campus, catching the eyes of many students. This was Shu Luo’s latest gift—a reward for obtaining his driver’s license, which Jiang Mu had specifically arranged to be shipped over with meticulous care.
After two years in Canada, influenced by the open local atmosphere, both young men had undergone significant changes.
“Hey, Shu Luo! Are you planning to hit the bars?”
Chen Cheng looked at the current Shu Luo, who had changed tremendously. He had grown taller, surpassing 1.8 meters. His former delicate prettiness had evolved into a refined, sharp handsomeness; he radiated a sunny, eye-catching energy. With his hair dyed a light gold and styled upward with wax, a simple white T-shirt and jeans were enough to make him the center of attention.
“Why? Don’t want to go?” Shu Luo leaned in playfully.
Chen Cheng felt a strange flicker of danger—Shu Luo had definitely learned some “bad” habits during his time abroad.
“Shu Luo, stop running to bars all the time. People will think you’re out there picking up girls!” Chen Cheng pushed away Shu Luo’s blindingly handsome face.
“My friend, we’ve been here for two years. You have to adapt to the lifestyle. Why are you still so conservative? I’m just taking you for a test drive in my new car, not going to a bar. Look at you—the moment I mention a bar, you look like you’re afraid I’ll eat you alive,” Shu Luo teased, shaking his head with mock disdain.
Chen Cheng rolled his eyes. “I should be the one calling you ‘big brother.’ Are you skipping the professor’s lecture this afternoon?”
Shu Luo grinned. “Didn’t you know I entered the human genetics thesis competition? I don’t have to go to class this afternoon. Haha!”
The laughter was pure boasting, but he certainly had the credentials to back it up. Since arriving here, Shu Luo had become like a high-speed machine, developing a frantic passion for medicine. Even when faced with the grueling rotations through different departments after his fourth year, his optimism and drive remained unshaken.
Recommended by his mentor, he had submitted a paper just to try his luck, but it ended up receiving a formal offer. The university’s genetics professor was fascinated by his findings, which happened to align with one of the school’s research projects. It was a year-long process of data collection—a commitment no less intense than a graduation thesis.
Chen Cheng could only sigh at his friend’s transformation. Shu Luo had completely redefined his definition of “restless energy.”
As a Chinese “fresh meat” type, Shu Luo was unexpectedly popular with the girls on campus. Enthusiastic women of all types approached him, but despite being generous with dinners and outings, he seemed entirely uninterested in romance. Chen Cheng was certain he must have a girlfriend back home.
“Shu Luo, if you turn into a playboy and your girlfriend dumps you, what will you do?”
Shu Luo knew Chen Cheng assumed there was a “girlfriend.” He didn’t mind the misunderstanding. “He won’t dump me. I have that much confidence.”
Chen Cheng didn’t buy it. “Wealthy second-generation kids are the worst! Squanderers! Parasites!”
“…” Shu Luo was speechless. Did I offend this guy somehow? It seemed walking the dog every day had boosted Chen Cheng’s ego to a whole new level.
Seeing Shu Luo’s helpless expression, Chen Cheng felt a secret surge of satisfaction. “Keep showing off; karma will get you.”
Shu Luo ignored him and dangled his keys. “You coming or not? Test drive my new car.”
Chen Cheng was indeed interested in the R8. “Fine, but don’t be out too long. I still have a project to write.”
“I got it, Mr. Busy. It won’t take much of your time.”
“Winter break is coming up. Are you going back for the New Year this time?”
Shu Luo fell silent for a moment before smiling. “Of course I am.”
He hadn’t returned last year because his mentor had forced him to stay behind for his thesis. That had resulted in a week-long cold war with Jiang Mu, and his family had been upset about him missing the holidays. Though he had gone home for a month during the summer, it wasn’t enough. He knew Jiang Mu was unhappy.
Although they video-chatted frequently over the past two years, they were still separated by a screen. Jiang Mu hadn’t visited because he truly couldn’t get away. After leaving school at the end of his junior year, he was now busy with his MBA and the rapid expansion of the company. Their relationship relied entirely on calls. If Shu Luo didn’t go back this time, Jiang Mu might actually fly over and drag him home.
Shu Luo’s younger brother, Shu Yin, was now in the first grade. The kid was a miniature version of Shu Luo, which always gave Jiang Mu a strange, bittersweet feeling when he saw him.
When Jiang Mu admitted this, Shu Luo laughed for a long time. “Brother, just how much do you miss me? You’re not going to pounce on Yin Yin, are you?”
Watching the person on the screen laugh until tears came out, Jiang Mu gave a dry, chilling smile.
Two years had changed them both. Jiang Mu laughed even less now, projecting a cold, unapproachable aura. The depth in his eyes was impossible to read. Time in the business world had sharpened his presence significantly.
Jiang Mu stared at Shu Luo’s bright blonde hair and said flatly, “Why did you dye it?”
The color made Shu Luo’s skin look even paler and more vibrant, giving him a spirited, dashing look.
“To pick up girls, obviously,” Shu Luo propped his chin on his hand, grinning to see Jiang Mu’s reaction.
Jiang Mu remained composed. “Oh? Can you even get it up for a woman?”
“…That was cold!” Shu Luo shot back.
Shu Luo cocked an eyebrow. “Of course. Your Lord Shu Luo is limitlessly charming. There’s a line of women waiting for my favor.”
Looking at that face, Jiang Mu felt a restless itch—he wanted to grab the boy and silence that talkative mouth with a kiss.
“You must come back this year. Otherwise, I will come and fetch you personally.”
“Eh, we’ll see how I feel,” Shu Luo teased. “Maybe there won’t be any flights, or there’ll be some turbulence… accidents happen.”
“Then I’ll fly my own plane to get you. If we hit turbulence, we can die together.”
Shu Luo gritted his teeth. “You’re ruthless!” He promptly cut the video.
A faint smile touched Jiang Mu’s eyes. This brat’s wings have grown strong while he’s been away. I’ll have to smooth his feathers once he’s back.
After putting down his tablet, Shu Luo went to his closet and put on his white lab coat. Today marked the start of his week-long clinical observation. Beneath the coat was a simple blue polo shirt; he looked at his reflection and was quite satisfied.
He took a calculated selfie and sent it to Jiang Mu before silencing his phone. He had rounds at the hospital this afternoon and couldn’t be late.
“Shu Luo! Why aren’t you down yet?” Chen Cheng’s roar echoed from downstairs just as Shu Luo locked the door.
“Coming!”
His internship was at the Royal Victoria Hospital. After two years of studying French, he had no trouble with daily communication.
“Luo, remember to check the temperature and blood pressure for the patient in 401 later. Bring the charts. Also, you know how to do debridement and suturing, right? Go handle the wound for the patient in 317. I have surgery soon, so you do the rounds. Any problems?”
Dr. Senna, a sophisticated 35-year-old anesthesiology specialist, looked at him expectantly.
Shu Luo smiled. “No problem at all.”
Senna watched the young Chinese man with approval. He was handsome, had a great attitude, and most importantly, he was capable.
Stethoscope and charts in hand, Shu Luo began visiting the wards.
Meanwhile, back in China, CEO Jiang looked at the selfie Shu Luo had sent. His gaze darkened. He looks quite good in a white coat…
It triggered a sudden, intense urge to make the boy wear exactly that the next time they were in bed.
