No One Else Will Do But You - Chapter 61
Upon hearing Shu Yin’s cries, everyone rushed over to see what had happened, only to find Shu Luo lying on the floor, his face deathly pale.
Jiang Mu immediately stepped forward, gathered the younger man into his arms, and commanded in a low, heavy voice, “Call a doctor!”
Shu’s mother was so frightened her legs felt weak. “What’s wrong with Luo-Luo? Why would he suddenly collapse?”
Those who knew the truth were at a loss for words.
“The recovery from intracranial hemorrhaging depends entirely on the individual’s healing capacity,” Dr. Su explained. “Even after the hematoma has cleared, there can be lingering sequelae—dizziness, nausea, and blurred vision are all to be expected. Therefore, he must avoid strenuous exercise and heavy labor. His nutrition must also be prioritized.”
Ultimately, the truth could no longer be kept from the family.
Shu’s mother sat to one side, clutching Shu Yin as her eyes reddened with tears. She had no idea her child had been kidnapped, let alone that he had nearly lost his life. She finally understood why he had suddenly insisted on going abroad a month ago.
Jiang Qin looked at her with concern. “Sister Qin, don’t worry too much. With proper care and rest, he will recover.”
Little Shu Yin sat there, still shaken and dazed; he was too young to truly grasp the gravity of the situation.
Dr. Su adjusted his glasses and continued, “Does anyone know the specifics of Shu Luo’s injury?”
“He was struck on the back of the head with a wine bottle,” Jiang Mu replied. His expression was grim—he was troubled by the fact that Shu Luo hadn’t told him he was feeling unwell.
Dr. Su nodded. “He was hospitalized for a while, wasn’t he? It seems the assailant was quite brutal. Did the bottle shatter?”
Jiang Mu nodded.
The color drained further from Shu’s mother’s face. Every word was a blow to her heart—her son had been kidnapped and injured, yet her own family had kept her in the dark.
“He needs proper recuperation. An injury to the back of the head is no small matter; that is where our memories are stored,” Dr. Su noted. “He is out of immediate danger now, but he needs rest.” After speaking, he glanced at Casso.
Casso merely arched an eyebrow in response.
While Shu’s mother and Jiang Qin watched over Shu Luo, Dr. Su made his way downstairs. At the foot of the stairs, he stopped and turned to look at Casso, a faint, knowing smile playing behind his glasses.
“I have heard of you for a long time, Casso Rochechouart. It is an honor to finally meet you.”
Casso smiled back. “I didn’t expect the renowned Dr. Su to be playing the role of a humble family physician here.”
“One doesn’t always need to stand at the peak, does one? I believe my nephew feels the same way. Isn’t that right, Jiang Mu?”
Jiang Mu frowned as he looked at Dr. Su. “Su Jingfeng?”
The doctor smiled. “I heard you two have become partners. I’m truly happy for you.”
“Don’t let him know that Shu Luo is injured,” Jiang Mu warned, wanting to avoid giving anyone an opening.
“Unfortunately, he already knows. You made quite a scene,” Dr. Su replied before turning to leave.
Casso stroked his chin thoughtfully. “This Su Jingfeng… he’s not simple.”
Jiang Mu didn’t care about anyone’s “simplicity” right now. He needed to go back upstairs to check on Shu Luo. Recalling the sight of him collapsing earlier, Jiang Mu felt as though his heart had skipped a beat.
Upstairs, Jiang Qin was still comforting Shu’s mother, who remained deeply distressed.
“Godmother, please go and rest,” Jiang Mu said softly. “I’ll stay with Luo-Luo tonight.”
Shu’s mother looked at the tall, handsome young man before her. In the blink of an eye, the boy she knew had grown into a man whose presence commanded absolute trust.
“A-Mu, I don’t ask for much, but Luo-Luo doesn’t understand the complexities of your world, so…”
“I know,” Jiang Mu interrupted. “I won’t let anyone hurt him.”
The terrified Shu Yin had already fallen asleep in his mother’s arms. Jiang Qin looked at the situation and added, “A-Mu, I hope you won’t hide such serious matters from us again. We are family, aren’t we? Look after Luo-Luo; he isn’t as resilient as you.”
“I will.” Jiang Mu didn’t need to say more; he would protect Shu Luo with his life.
In the bedroom, a warm orange glow filled the space. On the bed, Shu Luo was sleeping peacefully. Jiang Mu sat by his side, holding his hand. He leaned down and pressed a kiss to the younger man’s knuckles with a look of utter devotion, as if he were holding the world’s most precious treasure.
“Mmm…” Shu Luo murmured, slowly opening his eyes. His vision shifted from a blur to clarity until he saw Jiang Mu sitting by the bed.
“Do you still feel unwell?” Jiang Mu asked tenderly, brushing a stray hair from Shu Luo’s forehead.
“I’m okay. Did I… did I really faint just now?” Shu Luo remembered holding Shu Yin before everything went black.
“Yes. You gave everyone a fright. My mother and yours both know everything now.”
Shu Luo sighed and tried to sit up, but Jiang Mu immediately pressed him back down. “Stay down,” he said sternly. “I haven’t finished with you yet.”
Shu Luo was startled. “Why… why are you being so serious all of a sudden?”
“I asked you earlier if you felt unwell, why didn’t you say anything?”
“I…” Shu Luo was speechless. He simply hadn’t wanted to make everyone worry.
“Don’t make me worry like that again, okay?”
The shift from a stern tone to such a gentle, pleading voice was a trap Shu Luo couldn’t escape. He nodded helplessly.
“I promise,” Shu Luo said, raising his hand as if taking an oath. Jiang Mu was finally amused by the gesture and let out a small laugh.
Shu Luo patted the space beside him. “Come and sleep.”
“Is that an invitation?”
“…” Can you not make everything sound so suggestive? Shu Luo thought.
Once they were settled, Jiang Mu pulled him into his arms. Shu Luo looked at the man so close to him and couldn’t help but chuckle.
“What is it?” Jiang Mu asked, puzzled.
“It just feels… incredible. The old ‘me’ could never have imagined the ‘you’ of today.”
Jiang Mu didn’t quite follow.
“I mean, you were never this gentle with me before,” Shu Luo teased. “I guess people really do become fools when they’re in love.”
Jiang Mu pinched his cheek playfully. “Are you talking about yourself?”
“Ouch! No, I’m talking about you… you really weren’t this good to me before…”
How could that be? Jiang Mu thought. I would gladly pull my heart out and lay it before you, just so you could see that it beats only for you.
“Alright, go to sleep. We don’t want you feeling sick again tomorrow.”
“I’m not that fragile. This was just a special circumstance.”
Jiang Mu kissed his forehead and held him tighter. Feeling the warmth of Jiang Mu’s body, Shu Luo slowly drifted off to sleep.
Once he was sure Shu Luo was asleep, Jiang Mu stepped out onto the balcony. His phone vibrated just then.
“Have you cleared things up? You’ve had plenty of time,” Jiang Mu said into the receiver.
Assistant Xiao Fang, currently crouching in some dark corner, replied dejectedly, “Boss, according to my sources, the Black Dragon Gang is behind this. Lin Wenhui approached them first, but lately, it’s been Lin Kun pulling the strings. He paid the Azure Dragon Gang to do the dirty work.”
“The Azure Dragon Gang?”
Despite his elite education and vast knowledge, Jiang Mu was hearing these names for the first time.
“They are underworld organizations, Boss,” Xiao Fang explained quickly.
Jiang Mu frowned. When had they offended the underworld? Was it simply a case of “a tall tree catching the wind”?
“Keep investigating until everything is clear. Starting tomorrow, begin an internal audit of the company.”
Hearing his boss’s icy tone, the lonely Xiao Fang felt a wave of self-pity. “Boss, is there a raise involved? I’m suffering here.”
“I’ll consider it once you give me the proposal I asked for,” Jiang Mu said before hanging up.
Xiao Fang stared at his phone screen and sighed toward the heavens. Why is this so hard? The man has already been pursued and won; do two grown men really need all these formalities and proposals?
Of course, a CEO like Jiang Mu was not a casual man. The genes for romance were very much present in his DNA.
In the villa next door, Casso was shamelessly lingering in Jiang Qin’s room, seeking “warmth.”
“Are we even that close? You’re not a child anymore—get out! I want to sleep,” Jiang Qin scolded, though it was mostly a facade.
Casso smiled at her feigned anger. “Qin, don’t tell me you don’t want this too?”
“In your dreams! Go back to your own room!” Jiang Qin couldn’t handle his clinginess.
Before she could say more, she was silenced by a sudden kiss. Having successfully “stolen a taste,” a glint of mischief flashed in Casso’s eyes. He was determined to win her back, no matter what.
Jiang Qin glared at him and pushed him out, slamming the door shut. Casso rubbed his nose, smiling with satisfaction as he headed back to his room.
In the end, father and son were exactly the same.
