No One Else Will Do But You - Chapter 56
“There’s evidence of intracranial hemorrhage in the back of his head, and it was dragged to the hospital two days later. The situation now is absolutely not just a surgical problem; it might even affect his vision. Also, because he was drugged with a hallucinogen, and the patient has a history of depression, his consciousness is more fragile than the average person’s. The treatment will be a long process, both physically and psychologically.”
Jiang Mu leaned against the cold wall outside the operating room, burying his face in his hands. He had never been so devastated, never hated himself so much for a mistake. Business matters had implicated an irrelevant person—the most precious person in his life. Was he destined to live with this self-reproach?
Shu Luo’s father rushed over and saw Jiang Mu’s demoralized state, his heart instantly filled with regret.
“A Mu, how is Luo Luo?”
Jiang Mu lifted his head to look at Shu Luo’s father, his eyes bloodshot from exhaustion, even glistening with tears.
“The doctor said there’s intracranial hemorrhage. The specifics will have to wait for observation after the surgery. And the hallucinogen… it might trigger his depression.”
Shu Luo’s father suddenly felt dizzy, and Jiang Mu quickly supported him.
“Depression… Haha. The child I’ve protected for so long is being reverted by this hallucinogen?! That Lin Kun is truly vicious.” Shu Luo’s father couldn’t imagine how difficult the treatment process would be this time.
Neither of them spoke again until the surgery was over.
This matter had to be kept a secret for the time being because Shu Luo’s grandmother could not handle any shock.
During the one-week observation period, Shu Luo experienced two comas and unstable breathing.
This level of suffering was more than Jiang Mu could bear. Every time he finished visiting Shu Luo, his palms were marked with deep indentations from his fingernails.
After three days in the hospital, Shu Luo was relatively lucid.
“Luo Luo, how are you? Are you dizzy?”
Hearing that gentle voice, Shu Luo felt as if that day was just an illusion. Yes, he had been given a hallucinogen.
“Brother, I had a dream that day. I dreamed you were in bed with a woman… um, that. Then you turned around, looked at me coldly, and said: ‘Let’s break up.'”
Shu Luo spoke softly, partly because his strength hadn’t recovered; his spirits had been low these past few days. He was constantly struggling to suppress negative emotions, determined not to let any state of pessimism surface.
Jiang Mu embraced him. He had lost weight again… he had just managed to fatten him up a bit, and now he was thin again.
“Silly boy, how could I want to break up with you? I never will. I’ll never say those words to you unless you say them to me.”
Shu Luo rested his chin on Jiang Mu’s shoulder. “That day, I almost jumped out of the building. I remember that.”
The intensity of Jiang Mu’s embrace increased slightly. He said, “Don’t do anything foolish again. You’ve only been drugged with a hallucinogen, so you’ll have hallucinations.”
Shu Luo raised his hand to touch the back of his head. Looking at Jiang Mu in front of him, he realized his vision was a bit blurry now.
“Brother, that Lin Kun was absolutely disgusting that day. He even tried to tear my clothes and take advantage of me. I hit him with a chair, but I guess I was still too weak.”
Listening to Shu Luo talk about it in such a light tone, Jiang Mu’s expression darkened.
He cupped Shu Luo’s face and said gently, “I won’t let him off easily. Anyone who touches what’s mine will learn the consequences. So Luo Luo, don’t use this deliberately casual tone. I know you’re uncomfortable. You can hit me, or you can curse at me, but don’t bottle it up.”
The words, spoken in such a tender tone, sent shivers down one’s spine.
Shu Luo squinted, trying to clearly see Jiang Mu’s face, but found he still couldn’t. It seemed the intracranial hemorrhage had caused the blurry vision.
Seeing Shu Luo squint, Jiang Mu’s heart skipped a beat. “What’s wrong with your eyes?”
“Hmm… I can’t see your face clearly.”
Jiang Mu abruptly got up and walked out to call the doctor immediately.
Sigh—
Shu Luo sighed. How could this happen? Then he thought of Lin Kun’s expression back then.
Ugh—
He threw off the blanket and rushed straight to the bathroom.
When Jiang Mu returned, he saw Shu Luo hunched over the toilet, continuously retching.
“Does your stomach hurt?” Jiang Mu went forward to help him up.
Shu Luo waved his hand. “Just thinking about that Lin Kun makes me sick.”
Back in bed, the doctor examined his eyes.
“This is a normal phenomenon. His vision will recover over time. It’s best to keep him hospitalized for the next two weeks until the effects of the hallucinogen and the wound on the back of his head are completely resolved.”
Jiang Mu touched Shu Luo’s forehead. Only when he confirmed there was no fever did he relax.
Seeing Jiang Mu’s exhausted look, Shu Luo patted the spot next to him. “Come up, sleep with me for a bit.”
“That’s thoughtful.” Jiang Mu gently kissed his forehead, then lay down, holding Shu Luo as they slept.
The hospital room was very quiet. The two figures embracing on the hospital bed created a beautiful scene that one wouldn’t dare to interrupt.
Carlo smiled and closed the door.
Then, his face hardened. Daring to touch a member of the de Rotheschild family? They certainly had nerve.
Shu Luo slept deeply, then started dreaming again.
The light yellow room gave off a comfortable feeling, making him feel relaxed.
A light piano piece, sounding like a childhood memory, drifted into his ears.
He felt light all over.
“Luo Luo, do you like it? This song I’m playing for you.”
Jiang Mu, sitting at the piano in a silver-grey suit, looked handsome and elegant, gazing at him tenderly.
Shu Luo wanted to nod, but found he couldn’t speak. What was wrong?
Then, he was surprised to find Jiang Mu’s gaze shift behind him. He slowly turned around.
The subject of the black-and-white photo on the wall was smiling so brightly.
How could this be?!
He suddenly turned back to look at Jiang Mu, shouting loudly, “Brother, I’m here! I’m still here!”
But Jiang Mu didn’t seem to hear him. He walked straight to the memorial tablet and gently caressed the photo. “Are you happy leaving me alone?”
Then Shu Luo woke up.
He turned his head and saw Jiang Mu still sleeping beside him, and the sky outside was dark.
He sighed in relief. It was just a dream.
He wiped the sweat from his forehead. He was truly exhausted.
Seeing the dark circles under Jiang Mu’s eyes, this past week must have worn him out completely.
“Hmm, Luo Luo? Are you awake?” Sensing the movement of the person next to him, Jiang Mu opened his eyes.
Shu Luo smiled. “It’s dark. I’m hungry.”
Jiang Mu got up, pinched the bridge of his nose to wake himself up, then got out of bed and picked up the thermos next to him.
“You can only eat bland food right now. I made some lean meat congee. It’s still warm.”
Shu Luo suddenly laughed while watching Jiang Mu’s movements. His eyes curved like crescent moons, and his dimples subtly appeared. He looked very happy.
Jiang Mu paused, feeling a little flustered by the stare. “What’s wrong? Why are you laughing so happily?”
“I suddenly feel like you’re very good at being a wife.”
Jiang Mu shook his head helplessly, realizing what Shu Luo was going to say. He poured the congee into the bowl and brought it to him. “Hurry up and drink it. It’s not too hot.”
Shu Luo suddenly felt curious. When did he learn to cook?
“Brother, who taught you to cook?”
“I learned it from a book.”
“Wow, you’re amazing.”
“Keep it low-key.”
“…” He was just being polite.
Shu Luo’s father came in while the two were laughing happily. He immediately felt relieved.
Knock, knock—
Hearing the knock, the two turned their heads.
Shu Luo looked at his father, who finally came. “Dad, why did it take you so long to visit me?”
Shu Luo’s father hugged his son with pity. “I didn’t dare tell your mother or grandmother. I told them you went abroad for an exchange program. Your mother was a little suspicious. How are you now? Are you still uncomfortable?”
Shu Luo said, “I’m fine, besides not being able to see clearly. Everything else is okay.”
Shu Luo’s father worried, “Dad is worried that the hallucinogen will affect your depression, afraid that you’ll start hiding in the closet again—”
“Dad, I won’t.” Shu Luo quickly stopped his father from continuing. “It’s nothing. I’m fine.” With so many people who loved him around, he wouldn’t.
Jiang Mu frowned. Hiding in the closet? What kind of behavior was that?
