No One Else Will Do But You - Chapter 16
After six days in Thailand and two days of rest at home, the exam results were released.
However, Shu Luo’s fever kept coming back.
When Jiang Mu checked the results, both families were there, but Shu Luo was still asleep in his room.
They first checked Jiang Mu’s score: 724 points. As expected, it was an outstanding result. Shu’s dad and mom were very envious.
“Oh, A Mu is truly an excellent child,” Shu’s mom said with emotion.
Shu’s dad also nodded.
Then it was time to check Shu Luo’s score, which made Shu’s dad and mom nervous.
The passing grade for Zhengcheng was already out, at 650 points, a score Shu Luo had never achieved before.
Jiang Mu was also nervous, even more so than when he was checking his own score.
He dialed the phone number to check the score and followed the voice prompts.
“Shu Luo, total score of 653. Chinese 112, Math…”
Shu’s dad and mom were so shocked their mouths hung open. 653… it was like an astronomical number, unprecedented. He had really done them proud!
The two of them excitedly spun around in place, speechless.
Jiang Mu’s lips curved into a smile. Not bad. He lived up to expectations.
Jiang’s mom patted Jiang Mu’s shoulder, giving him symbolic encouragement. “A Mu, you really make me proud. It was the right decision to send you to a Chinese school abroad.” It was as if it was all for this moment.
The adults were busy preparing a delicious meal to celebrate the two boys, even though Shu Luo was still not feeling well.
Jiang Mu walked into Shu Luo’s room and sat on the edge of the bed.
Shu Luo seemed to feel the bed sink a little and opened his eyes.
“Why are you here?” His voice was hoarse, like a smoker’s.
Jiang Mu turned and touched his forehead, speaking softly. “I checked your score for you. 653.”
“Wow, I’m amazing! I’ve never scored this high before! Cough, cough, cough…” Even though he was still sick, the excitement in his eyes couldn’t be hidden by his pale face.
Jiang Mu was completely unaccustomed to Shu Luo’s current state. He thought to himself that he would never let him get sick again. It felt like the world was missing a sound when he was sick.
Shu Luo saw that Jiang Mu’s eyes seemed to hold some kind of emotion, so he simply sat up and pounced on him.
Jiang Mu was stunned by the “surprise attack” and held him by the waist. “What are you doing? You’re still sick.”
Shu Luo flopped onto his chest like a wet rag. “I don’t want to lie in bed. It’s been two days. I feel so uncomfortable. I want to go out and play.”
“You don’t want to lie in bed, so you’ll lie on me instead? Is this comfortable?” Jiang Mu said jokingly.
“It’s comfortable, but… I want to go out,” Shu Luo said, sitting up after a moment.
Jiang Mu thought so, too. Being sick didn’t mean he had to stay cooped up at home. He needed some fresh air.
“Are you cold?” Jiang Mu thought about whether to have him wear a jacket.
Shu Luo gave him a strange look. “I’m hot.”
They got permission from Shu’s dad and mom, who agreed that it was a good idea to go out for a walk when he was sick. Staying cooped up wasn’t a good thing. They agreed to let them go out as long as Jiang Mu watched over Shu Luo.
“Walk or ride?” Jiang Mu asked after they went downstairs.
“Ride. I’ll take you to the suburban area I went to last time. Oh! Let’s get the fishing gear. I want to go fishing.”
“…” He’s sick, and he still wants to go fishing?
In the end, he went back upstairs to get the gear.
The mountain bike didn’t have a back seat, but it had a stand, so Shu Luo just stood on it.
“Does the wind bother you?” Jiang Mu asked as he rode.
Shu Luo shook his head. “No, it’s more comfortable than staying at home.”
After riding for over an hour, they arrived at the small lake in the suburbs.
Jiang Mu looked around. This area seemed to be a villa community, and the environment was very good.
“This is the place you came to last time?”
Shu Luo’s steps were a little unsteady as he got off the bike. Jiang Mu immediately steadied him.
“Hey, I’m fine. My old man’s strength will recover soon. Yes, this is the place I came to last time. It’s not bad, is it? It’s comfortable and quiet.”
The lake breeze in the afternoon was a little hot, but the green lake water gave people a refreshing and comfortable feeling.
They set up two folding chairs and prepared the fishing gear and bait. The two of them sat quietly by the lake and started fishing.
After about half an hour, Shu Luo shook his head. He felt a little dizzy from fishing.
Jiang Mu frowned. “Are you not feeling well? Was it the wind?” He put down his fishing gear, pulled his chair next to his, and reached out to touch his forehead again. His brows furrowed even more. It’s been two days, and it’s still like this?
“I feel a little dizzy from sitting here. My vision was a little blurry just now,” Shu Luo said, rubbing his head, trying to clear his mind.
Jiang Mu took out the jacket from his backpack and gave it to Shu Luo. “Wear this. I shouldn’t have brought you here.”
“Hey, I was bored at home, so I wanted to go fishing. The air here is nice, isn’t it? Achoo!”
Shu Luo awkwardly rubbed his nose and met Jiang Mu’s helpless gaze.
“Oh? Isn’t this Shu Luo? You’re here to fish again?”
Hearing a familiar voice, Shu Luo turned his head and saw the model-like Su Jingfeng.
Su Jingfeng was surprised to see Shu Luo’s face and asked with concern, “What’s wrong? Why do you look so pale? Are you not feeling well?”
Jiang Mu seemed to feel a sense of danger and said, “He has a fever.”
“Do you want to come inside and rest? The wind will pick up by the lake later. Be careful not to make it worse.”
Jiang Mu’s eyes lingered on the man, his gaze indifferent, but a flicker of displeasure passed through his eyes.
Su Jingfeng smiled at Jiang Mu. It seemed this boy didn’t like him very much. Why?
“Luo Luo, let’s go inside and rest. We can also check your temperature. It was a low fever this morning.”
That strange atmosphere again. Shu Luo shivered. It was so weird.
After they entered the villa, Su Jingfeng went to get a first-aid kit.
“100.4°F. Your fever is rising,” Jiang Mu said after taking his temperature. He looked into his eyes. “Do you feel very uncomfortable?”
Perhaps it was because of his very serious gaze, but Shu Luo was a little dazed. After a moment, he came back to his senses and shook his head. “Not bad, just a little dizzy.”
The smile on Su Jingfeng’s lips never faded. Looking at how Jiang Mu was treating Shu Luo, he wondered if his guess was correct.
Shu Luo saw that Su Jingfeng was smiling at them strangely and felt a little creeped out. “Brother Feng, why are you smiling so weirdly?”
“I’m not. I’m just amazed at how wonderful youth is. It seems you two have a very good relationship,” he said, glancing at Jiang Mu.
Jiang Mu didn’t react. He just didn’t like this man very much.
“Shu Luo, you haven’t introduced me to your good friend yet. We only met briefly last time.”
Shu Luo put his arm on Jiang Mu’s shoulder and said with a smile, “His name is Jiang Mu. He’s half-Chinese and half-French. He’s also my neighbor and my desk partner. His grades are amazing, and he’s handsome, too, right?”
Jiang Mu’s lips curved into a subtle smile.
Su Jingfeng said, “He looks very handsome. The mix of Chinese and French looks very good. His features are very defined.”
Shu Luo shook his head triumphantly. “Maybe his temperament improved after he met me.”
Jiang Mu didn’t say anything, but he helped him straighten his jacket. He also put the back of his hand on his forehead to see if he was sweating. Since he wasn’t, he made him keep the jacket on.
“A Mu, I still want to take off the jacket. I’m a little hot…” Shu Luo said, uncomfortably pulling on his collar.
“Wear it until you start sweating.”
Shu Luo felt that Jiang Mu was different from usual. His attitude was a little cold, but he didn’t say anything else. Then he saw Su Jingfeng doing something in the kitchen and, out of curiosity, went to see what he was doing.
Jiang Mu’s eyes darkened.
The kitchen was very clean, and everything was neatly arranged, but they all looked like they had been used.
Shu Luo was impressed as he watched Su Jingfeng expertly make juice. There were also desserts next to him.
“Brother Feng, did you make all this?”
Su Jingfeng raised an eyebrow and smiled. “Yes. I was going to take some to my girlfriend, but since I saw you guys, I’ll treat you first.”
“A girlfriend? So Brother Feng has a girlfriend now? Is she pretty?”
Shu Luo’s nosy little eyes made Su Jingfeng laugh. This little boy was so likable.
“Yes, she’s pretty.”
Shu Luo looked at the mousse and swallowed. “Can I have a taste first?” His mom never made desserts like this.
“Of course.” While making the juice, he also asked, “It seems your friend has a way of making you listen to him. Last time, you asked me why you always listen to him. Some people are born with that ability.”
Shu Luo ate the mousse and nodded in agreement. “A Mu always finds a way to convince me and make me listen.”
“And now?”
“Huh?” Shu Luo looked at him in confusion. What does that mean?
Su Jingfeng poured the juice into a glass cup. The kiwi green looked beautiful and made people’s mouths water.
He handed the juice to Shu Luo and said with a soft laugh, “He doesn’t seem to like me very much. So, what reason will he use to convince you not to come here again? Here, take this juice to him.”
Shu Luo frowned, not quite understanding.
Su Jingfeng ruffled his hair. Ah, his hair is so soft. “You’ll know soon. What will you do then?” He then put a business card in his pocket.
Am I really that stupid?
Shu Luo took the juice and dessert out with a puzzled look on his face.
Jiang Mu, who was sitting outside, looked calm, but his heart was already in turmoil. When he saw Shu Luo come out, it was the calm before the storm.
“Haha, A Mu, do you want some juice? Brother Feng is so cool. He can make juice and desserts. It’s so cool that he can make desserts.”
Looking at Shu Luo’s enthusiastic dancing, Jiang Mu said blandly, “I can, too.”
Shu Luo was stunned for a moment, then said in surprise, “You can, too? Why haven’t I ever seen you do it?”
“I don’t have that much free time.”
Shu Luo fell silent. Jiang Mu’s words were a little harsh, and he could already feel that Jiang Mu was unhappy.
Su Jingfeng came out just in time to hear this and glanced at Shu Luo. The atmosphere was not good.
“I’m about to go on a date. What are you guys going to do?” Su Jingfeng said, holding up the small box with desserts in it.
Jiang Mu stood up and casually glanced at Su Jingfeng. “Sorry to have bothered you. Let’s go.”
Shu Luo shrugged helplessly, then chugged the rest of his juice and waved goodbye to Su Jingfeng.
Su Jingfeng made a hand gesture for a phone call.
After they left, Shu Luo quietly walked behind him. But he felt the atmosphere was strange, so he suddenly pounced on Jiang Mu’s back and clung to him.
Jiang Mu was startled by the surprise attack, but he was also afraid he would fall, so he held him by the hips.
He still hasn’t said a word…
Shu Luo felt a little awkward.
“A Mu, what’s wrong? Are you unhappy?” He decided to ask. Otherwise, he would be uncomfortable.
Jiang Mu was indeed unhappy, but he needed time to process whether this feeling was normal.
“It’s nothing. You’re just not being obedient,” he said, using an excuse to deflect the question for now.
Shu Luo tightened his grip on Jiang Mu’s neck. “You’re lying. You don’t like Su Jingfeng, do you?”
Jiang Mu stopped. After a moment, he said flatly, “No.”
“Why?” So that’s what Brother Feng meant earlier.
“No reason.”
When they returned to the lake, Jiang Mu put him down and started packing up the fishing gear and chairs before pushing the bike.
Shu Luo was itching to know the reason. “Is there really no reason?”
“There is, but I don’t want to tell you.”
“…” I really want to hit him.
Jiang Mu sat on the bike with a cool look and turned to look at him. “I’ll tell you later.”
The sunset is beautiful, but people’s hearts are hard to read.
Sigh, whatever.
Shu Luo put on the fishing gear and got on the bike stand.
Jiang Mu looked at the road stretching out in front of them. They still have a long way to go, don’t they? Time will prove everything. Whether it’s right or wrong, whether it’s worth it or not.
They will eventually grow up and understand what they are doing.
