My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 80
Guiltily averting her gaze, she looked at the TV and forcibly changed the subject: “Were you watching TV just now?”
In her impression, Shen Baiyi didn’t seem to enjoy watching TV much.
“Mm.” The smile on Shen Baiyi’s face remained unchanged, and she didn’t deliberately say anything about being bored at home and having nothing to do but watch TV to make her sister feel more guilty. “Is Sister’s work really all finished? I didn’t delay Sister’s matters, did I?”
One thing was one thing she didn’t want to cause trouble for her sister’s work.
“No.” Zheng Yao shook her head.
“That’s good.” Shen Baiyi breathed a sigh of relief, then added as if casually, “Is Sister very close with that friend? Is that friend also a writer?”
She didn’t like that person.
She also felt that the other person probably didn’t like her much either. During that encounter at the school gate, she clearly saw the other person subconsciously furrow their brows.
That person seemed to have eyes that could see right through people, instantly seeing through her.
She clearly knew she wasn’t a good person. Birds of a feather flock together whether it was that Jin Tong from back then or Sister Xiaotong from the county town, none of them seemed like people a normal high school student would associate with.
But that was in the past.
Now she had forgotten everything, and those matters were already behind her. Logically, she shouldn’t need to worry anymore about whether her sister would mind her past self, because back in that county town, her sister had already given her a strong sense of security.
Her sister wouldn’t abandon her because of what she was like before.
Yet, whenever she thought of that person, Shen Baiyi unexpectedly found she still felt somewhat uneasy.
“Our relationship is alright.” At this point, Zheng Yao added, “She’s both a mentor and a friend, and also a bit like a boss and employee.”
Zhou Meilin was her first editor, and the only one so far, who had taught her quite a lot.
“Ah, I see.” Shen Baiyi pondered thoughtfully. Both a mentor and a friend that meant that person was quite important to her sister.
She lowered her eyes, somewhat disappointed.
The doorbell rang just in time, and she quickly stood up: “The takeout is here, I’ll get it.”
Zheng Yao had ordered a generous amount of takeout, and since both of them had eaten quite a full breakfast, it was enough for the two of them.
In the following days, Zheng Yao began focusing on her new book.
Shen Baiyi didn’t idle at home either; she went back to work at the restaurant the next day for her part-time job.
Time flew by, and soon it was almost time for Shen Baiyi to start school.
Although University A wasn’t in another city, it was still quite far from home. Earlier, Zhuang Liulan had already scouted out a place for Shen Baiyi. Originally, they had planned to go see it together, but various matters kept delaying it, and by the time she declined the offer, they still hadn’t gone to see the place.
Later, after hearing from Zhuang Liulan that the place was quite nice and receiving videos and photos, she found it really appealing and couldn’t resist renting it for six months in advance.
On August 25th, Zheng Yao drove Shen Baiyi to University A.
But ever since learning that Zheng Yao had rented an apartment for her off-campus, Shen Baiyi’s mood had been somewhat low.
“Why are you still unhappy?” Taking advantage of a red light, Zheng Yao turned to look at her.
“We just got together, and Sister is already in a hurry to send me away.” Shen Baiyi turned to face her, pursed her lips, and made her displeasure clear on her face.
“This was decided long ago, not because we’re together that I planned for you to rent a place outside,” Zheng Yao said helplessly, reaching over to pinch the plump cheek she had nurtured on Shen Baiyi. “Even if you didn’t rent, when you go to A University later, we still couldn’t be together all the time.”
Shen Baiyi understood this logic perfectly well. But if she lived in the dorm during university, she could clearly return home during holidays. Yet her sister had rented an external apartment for her wasn’t that essentially telling her she didn’t need to come back even on holidays?
Because she already had a place of her own outside, her sister’s home no longer counted as her home.
If it wasn’t her home, could she still go back?
“Didn’t we agree before that you wouldn’t buy me a house?” she asked dejectedly.
“I didn’t buy it, just rented,” Zheng Yao corrected.
“You can stay in the dorm first. Renting that place is just for unexpected needs, it’s not just for you, but for me too.” At this point, her eyebrows lifted slightly. “Otherwise, would I have to stay in a hotel every time I come to see you?”
She had indeed decided earlier to respect Shen Baiyi’s wishes and not buy her a house, but now that they were together, long-distance dating was out of the question.
Shen Baiyi would be busy with school and couldn’t travel back and forth easily, whereas Zheng Yao had more flexible time and could visit often.
Shen Baiyi, who had been upset, froze at these words, then a light sparked in her eyes. “Will you come to see me, Sister?”
Zheng Yao found this both amusing and exasperating. “Even prisoners get visitors. You’re just going to school, how could I not come see you?”
The gloom lingering in Shen Baiyi’s heart instantly dissipated.
The car drove all the way to the location Zhuang Liulan had provided. Zhuang Liulan had brought Zhuang Yang there a few days earlier, and Zheng Yao saw them waiting as soon as she arrived.
“Why is it Dr. Zhuang again?” Shen Baiyi’s barely smoothed feathers ruffled once more.
“She helped find the apartment. You’ll be neighbors with Zhuang Yang later, so it’s normal for her to be here, right?” Zheng Yao didn’t understand why Shen Baiyi reacted so strongly but still chose to consult her. “Zhuang Yang is here too. How about we treat them to lunch? Is that okay?”
Shen Baiyi sighed inwardly, though she showed no trace of it on her face, having masked her emotions well. She nodded. “Fine.”
As soon as they got out of the car, Zhuang Yang proactively greeted, “Baiyi.”
Shen Baiyi acknowledged her.
Though they hadn’t seen each other for quite some time, they occasionally chatted on WeChat. The three of them had a small group, though most of the time it was Zhu Xiaofu and Zhuang Yang talking, with Shen Baiyi only responding occasionally.
“Great, we’ll be neighbors from now on!” Zhuang Yang showed unprecedented excitement about having an acquaintance at A University.
She grabbed Shen Baiyi’s hand, making plans for both of them. “I’ve already bought an electric scooter and got my driver’s license. I can give you rides to school and back home later.”
Moreover, their apartments were very close to the university, making commuting extremely convenient.
Shen Baiyi nodded. “Mm.”
Then, subtly withdrawing her hand, she tried to interlace her fingers with her sister’s instead, carefully watching her sister’s expression as she slipped her fingers between Zheng Yao’s.
Only when she saw no resistance on her sister’s face did she boldly clasp their hands together.
Having witnessed Shen Baiyi’s occasional displays of possessiveness before, Zhuang Liulan wasn’t too surprised this time. However, Zhuang Yang’s gaze remained fixed on their intertwined hands, her face revealing a hint of envy.
Seizing the moment when Shen Baiyi stepped away from her sister, Zhuang Yang whispered, “Baiyi, you and your sister seem really close now.”
Just during their trip to the amusement park, their relationship hadn’t felt this intimate yet.
Hearing this, Shen Baiyi couldn’t suppress her smile. “Yes, we are very close.”
If she had a tail, it would probably be wagging proudly by now.
Unfortunately, she still didn’t know whether she could tell Zhuang Yang about her relationship with her sister, so she had to keep it to herself for now.
She should have asked her sister about it on the way here.
Her sister had said they were dating openly, not sneaking around like thieves, so it should be okay to tell others, right?
“Xiao Bai.” Zheng Yao, who had already reached the rental apartment entrance, noticed Shen Baiyi hadn’t followed and waved her over. “Come here.”
Shen Baiyi responded and quickly glanced at Zhuang Yang. “I heard before that Dr. Zhuang likes clingy younger sisters.”
Zhuang Yang widened her eyes in disbelief. “Really?”
Shen Baiyi raised an eyebrow. “Just something I heard. Maybe you could try it. After all, I’ve been sticking close to my sister, and that’s why we’re so close now.”
“Perhaps you could try showing your vulnerable, clingy side in front of Dr. Zhuang.”
After saying this, she hurried over to her sister.
Zhuang Yang, still standing in place, watched blankly as Shen Baiyi naturally and affectionately linked arms with her sister, envy rising uncontrollably in her eyes.
She wanted to be closer with her sister too.
After an internal struggle, she finally took a deep breath, walked forward, and took her sister’s hand. “Sis.”
The action startled Zhuang Liulan, making her instantly stiffen.
In her memory, their relationship had never been particularly close. With their parents often busy with work, she had been the one mostly taking care of her younger sister, so in a way, she had raised Zhuang Yang.
Zhuang Yang had always been sensitive, and Zhuang Liulan had been overly strict with her, which led to Zhuang Yang keeping her distance.
By the time she wanted to get closer, it felt too late. So now, even though her whole body was tense, she couldn’t bring herself to pull away.
“What’s wrong?” she pretended to be calm, though her voice trembled slightly.
Zhuang Yang also felt awkward, but remembering Shen Baiyi’s words, she mustered her courage. “I think I have a bit of a headache.”
“A headache?”
Hearing this, Zhuang Liulan’s expression changed abruptly. She quickly reached out to feel Zhuang Yang’s forehead, the temperature under her palm did seem a bit high. Without another thought, she hastily said goodbye to Zheng Yao and took Zhuang Yang home.
They left so quickly that Zheng Yao didn’t even have time to react, let alone suggest having a meal together.
Zhuang Yao: “…”
Oh well, dinner could wait.
Who would have thought Zhuang Liulan was such a doting older sister, rushing off the moment she heard her younger sister wasn’t feeling well.
“Sis, I really like this place.” After happily inspecting the apartment, Shen Baiyi stood smiling in front of her sister.
This apartment only has one master bedroom does that mean whenever her sister stays here, they’ll have to sleep together?
“I’m glad you like it.” Seeing her satisfaction, Zheng Yao breathed a sigh of relief. “We’ll stay at a hotel today and have someone clean this place up. Then on the 28th, I’ll come with you to get familiar with everything beforehand. How does that sound?”
With her sister accompanying her, Shen Baiyi naturally agreed to everything.
There was a university town nearby. With the semester about to start, the area was already bustling with activity. Zheng Yao took Shen Baiyi directly to the snack shop she used to frequent during her college days.
Though she had only graduated a few years ago, the shop had undergone dramatic changes. The originally mottled walls were now covered with pink wallpaper, the interior was beautifully decorated, and popular music was playing everything looked completely unfamiliar.
The owner was still the same person, but his temples had grown much grayer, and the wrinkles on his face had deepened.
“I used to love eating here,” Zheng Yao said, watching Shen Baiyi wipe the table for her. “If you don’t like the cafeteria food later, you can always eat out. Don’t force yourself to endure anything you don’t like.”
“Besides this place, what other shops did you like?” Shen Baiyi couldn’t help but ask. A few seconds after speaking, she sighed again. “Sister, why don’t you stay here too? Take me to all the places you used to go.”
