My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 50
Realizing this, Zheng Yao instantly felt her scalp tingle.
Then what was with all those messy thoughts running through her head when she watched the movie with Shen Baiyi? If she didn’t feel any spark with Dr. Zhuang, could it be that she actually felt something for Shen Baiyi?
How could that be possible!
She quickly shook her head, trying to shake off this terrifying thought.
“What’s wrong?” Noticing the movement beside her, Zhuang Liulan turned to look at her.
“Nothing.”
Zheng Yao shook her head. Maybe it was because she had already seen this movie before that she didn’t feel any chemistry. Perhaps watching some newer movies in the future would make a big difference.
Finally calming down.
By the time the movie ended, it was already quite late, almost time for Shen Baiyi to get off work. So she took the initiative to tell Zhuang Liulan that she needed to pick someone up and go home.
“Dr. Zhuang.” She stopped by the car, holding the bouquet of flowers in her arms, and smiled. “Thank you for the flowers. See you next time.”
Zhuang Liulan: “See you next time.”
Getting into the car with the flowers, Zheng Yao casually placed them on the passenger seat. After a moment’s thought, she moved them to the back seat.
Unexpectedly, even so, Shen Baiyi immediately spotted the bouquet.
“Did sister buy me flowers?” Shen Baiyi’s eyes lit up, all her fatigue instantly vanishing.
Zheng Yao remained silent for a few seconds.
Hesitating for a moment, she cleared her throat lightly: “Someone gave them to me. If you like them, you can have them.”
The delight on Shen Baiyi’s face slowly faded. She immediately thought of someone and said expressionlessly, “Oh, it was Dr. Zhuang who gave them to you.”
Her tone carried obvious displeasure.
She stared straight at Zheng Yao, stating firmly: “Sister only remembered me after dating her until now.”
It was true that she had been on a date until now, but it wasn’t that she had only just remembered Shen Baiyi during the movie, her mind had been full of Shen Baiyi.
But she couldn’t say that in front of Shen Baiyi, so she vaguely brushed it off: “We just played a script murder game and watched a movie, that’s all.”
“Sister not only played with her but also went to watch a movie with her?” Shen Baiyi’s tone rose, filled with grievance and disbelief.
Zheng Yao: “…”
Why did this feel so much like she had been caught cheating and was now being questioned by the legitimate partner?
She straightened her chest: “Yeah.”
As an adult, what was wrong with going on a date? Zheng Yao prepared herself for a confrontation with Shen Baiyi, but instead, Shen Baiyi’s eyelids drooped, and her entire demeanor dimmed: “Oh.”
Instantly deflated, completely devoid of the lively cuteness she had when she first got in the car.
Zheng Yao: “…”
What was going on?
When Shen Baiyi questioned her, she felt uncomfortable. When Shen Baiyi didn’t question her, she still felt uncomfortable.
She was becoming stranger and stranger.
Before she could figure it out, Shen Baiyi suddenly spoke up: “Sister, I got my paycheck.”
Shen Baiyi actively changed the subject, and Zheng Yao immediately took the opportunity to roll with it: “Congratulations! This is your first paycheck, it’s really special. I’ll treat you tonight. What do you want to eat?”
“Sister came to pick me up on an empty stomach?” Shen Baiyi’s face was full of disapproval. “How could Dr. Zhuang do that? Taking sister out to have fun, not only didn’t pay for lunch but didn’t even treat sister to dinner.”
Zheng Yao was about to explain for Dr. Zhuang when she heard Shen Baiyi continue, “But it’s okay, sister still has me. I got my first paycheck today, so I’ll treat you to a meal.”
“You?” Zheng Yao chuckled softly, “How much is your salary anyway? One meal and it’ll all be gone.”
“I don’t mind.” Shen Baiyi curved her lips into a smile. Her sister hadn’t refuted what she’d just said, which made her happy, but she asked with feigned grievance, “Sister, don’t you want to eat with me? You had lunch with Dr. Zhuang at noon while I worked myself to the bone just to earn money to treat you.”
Tch.
The way she put it.
Zheng Yao put on a stern face: “You’re guilt-tripping me.”
Shen Baiyi fell silent, wanting to refute something, but upon careful thought, her sister seemed right – she really was taking advantage of her sister’s kindness to manipulate her.
Immediately feeling awkward and afraid of upsetting her sister, she could only cautiously observe her.
Fortunately, her sister wasn’t truly angry, as her expression softened the next second: “Then let’s go have malatang. I haven’t had it in ages.”
Malatang wasn’t good for the stomach, so Shen Baiyi instinctively objected: “Not malatang.”
“Then what do you want to eat?” Zheng Yao narrowed her eyes, “Don’t tell me you want to go to that restaurant too.”
Shen Baiyi seemed to enjoy competing with Dr. Zhuang, so she might actually have that idea.
“Even if I wanted to, it wouldn’t be now.” Shen Baiyi lowered her head and sighed softly, “Sister, you overestimate me. I can’t afford that restaurant.”
At least she knew her limits.
Zheng Yao’s light laughter filled the car, clearly in good spirits: “Then tell me, little Bai, what do you want to treat your sister to?”
Shen Baiyi thought hard and suddenly realized that no matter what she considered, nothing seemed better than cooking for her sister herself.
But just as she opened her mouth to speak, her sister seemed to guess what she was going to say and immediately stated: “We can’t go home and cook ourselves.”
Shen Baiyi frowned: “Why?”
Did her sister think outside food was better than hers?
“Sister doesn’t like my cooking.” At this point, Shen Baiyi’s expression drooped.
“How could that be?” Just from hearing her voice, Zheng Yao could imagine Shen Baiyi’s pitiful look. A glance from the corner of her eye confirmed it, and she quickly said, “I really like your cooking, but you worked hard outside today, and sister feels bad for you.”
She wasn’t really used to expressing her inner thoughts so openly, but there was no choice – Shen Baiyi was sensitive, and if she didn’t explain properly, who knew what the girl might be thinking.
Sure enough, as soon as she finished speaking, Shen Baiyi brightened up.
The previous awkwardness from her going out with Dr. Zhuang disappeared completely, and even her voice brimmed with happiness: “If sister wants malatang, then let’s have malatang!”
Hearing this, the smile in Zheng Yao’s eyes deepened.
What was this? So easily pleased.
With Shen Baiyi’s personality of being easily pacified, what would happen when she started dating?
–
The malatang place they went to was near their apartment.
It wasn’t a proper storefront but a small stall pulled by a tricycle.
It would set up every evening and stay until late at night. Zheng Yao loved this stall’s malatang but really hadn’t had it for a long time.
During the period when Shen Baiyi had been living with her, her diet had become much more regular and healthy, and even her stomachaches had become less frequent.
I actually miss this feeling.
Both chose to take their food home. Shen Baiyi repeatedly emphasized not to worry about her money, wanting to show off her “financial generosity,” telling Zheng Yao to get whatever she wanted. Zheng Yao didn’t hold back, filling a large bowl to the brim.
The container could barely contain it all.
Back home, the entire apartment was filled with the aroma of spicy hot pot. However, having eaten too much popcorn and drunk too many beverages during the movie, they ended up with quite a bit of leftovers.
Staring at the remaining food, Zheng Yao sighed, “What should we do? I can’t eat anymore. What a waste.”
Shen Baiyi, who had been struggling to finish her portion while breathing heavily, immediately looked up.
“I’m still hungry,” she declared without hesitation.
Zheng Yao glanced at the leftovers in Shen Baiyi’s bowl and hesitated, “But you still have a lot left in your bowl.”
“Actually, I wanted to say this earlier,” Shen Baiyi said with a straight face, “I really wanted to try the corn sausage from your bowl, but I was too shy to ask.”
Since she had put it that way and didn’t seem to mind, Zheng Yao wasn’t one to be stingy either. She pushed her bowl of spicy hot pot toward Shen Baiyi, “Then go ahead. Pick out whatever you want to eat. If you don’t want the rest, just pour out the broth and throw it away later.”
“Okay.”
Shen Baiyi lowered her head, suppressing a smile that threatened to curl her lips.
Zheng Yao, full and satisfied, collapsed onto the sofa with Yao Yao in her arms. Yao Yao was a little black furball, so dark that she often felt like calling her “Coal Ball.”
And the name Yao Yao wasn’t ideal either.
She hadn’t thought much about it before, but with Shen Baiyi calling the cat “Yao Yao” every day, she gradually realized the name sounded quite similar to her own.
If she wasn’t careful, she might mistake it for someone calling her.
Yao Yao.
Yao Yao.
The two words sounded very similar. She hadn’t noticed earlier because no one had ever called her that. Her dad used to call her “Xiao Yao.”
It wasn’t until their last visit to the vet, when Dr. Zhuang mentioned it offhandedly, that she realized calling the cat “Yao Yao” sounded somewhat like an affectionate nickname for herself.
She wondered if Shen Baiyi had noticed this too.
She turned to Shen Baiyi, “Xiao Bai, should we change Yao Yao’s name?”
Shen Baiyi stopped eating, and even from a distance, Zheng Yao could see her furrowed brows. “Why?”
Clearly, she disapproved.
Zheng Yao coughed lightly and offered a reason, “Look, she’s so black. Wouldn’t ‘Xiao Hei’ or ‘Coal Ball’ be more fitting?”
But Shen Baiyi’s expression darkened, “But I like calling her Yao Yao.”
Zheng Yao fell silent.
Before she could say anything, Shen Baiyi forced a strained smile and added, “It’s okay, sister. We can call her Coal Ball from now on. Whatever you prefer.”
What kind of talk was that?
Sensing Shen Baiyi’s unhappiness, Zheng Yao immediately said, “I was just joking. Let’s keep calling her Yao Yao. Yao Yao sounds nice.”
Forget it. It wasn’t like anyone called her “Yao Yao” anyway, and Shen Baiyi didn’t seem like the type to make the connection. So be it.
“Are you sure?” Shen Baiyi asked seriously, still holding her chopsticks. “Think it through, sister. If we don’t change it now, we can’t change it later.”
“No changes, no changes,” Zheng Yao firmly shook her head, not about to backtrack now.
Seeing this, Shen Baiyi lowered her head and sighed softly, “It’s because you don’t want me to change how I call you.”
Her voice was too low for Zheng Yao to hear. Now drowsiness washing over her, she found a comfortable position and murmured, “I’ll nap for a bit, wake me up later.”
The living room fell silent.
Soon, soft breathing could be heard.
Shen Baiyi looked up and saw her sister sleeping soundly facing her, completely unguarded. Her delicate lips were slightly parted, as if inviting someone to taste them.
Her eyes darkened slightly.
The spicy hot pot had been too spicy her sister’s lips were already slightly swollen even before she had kissed them.
She silently finished the remaining spicy hot pot in her sister’s bowl, then stood up and walked quietly to the sofa.
It seemed her sister really enjoyed sleeping on the sofa.
Gazing at the defenseless face sleeping peacefully before her, Shen Baiyi sat cross-legged on the floor.
Her sister was truly beautiful.
Shen Baiyi couldn’t resist reaching out a finger, gently brushing against her sister’s eyes, carefully tracing her thick eyelashes. Her finger then drifted downward, resting on the tall bridge of her nose before finally settling on the swollen lips. There, her movement stilled.
