My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 31
At first, Shen Baiyi didn’t quite grasp the meaning behind those words. She only felt uncomfortable under the other girl’s frivolous gaze and tightened her grip on her chopsticks, her expression icy. “Get lost.”
“What are you pretending for?” The girl shook her head. “Don’t think acting all high and mighty will fool me.”
She pointed at Shen Baiyi confidently. “You stole two glances at me today. Admit it, you’re obsessed with me too.”
“…”
Is she insane?
She stole glances at her?
She was obsessed with her?
She wasn’t even one percent as good-looking as her sister, yet she had the audacity to claim Shen Baiyi was infatuated with her. What a joke.
Shen Baiyi set down her chopsticks, her appetite completely gone. She stood up, picked up her tray, and walked away.
Unexpectedly, the girl clung to her like a stubborn piece of gum. After washing her hands, the girl deliberately blocked her path. Shen Baiyi lifted her eyes impatiently.
Her gaze landed on the girl, and when she noticed the hair tie in her hair, she finally remembered that she had indeed glanced at someone a few times that morning but it was purely because of the hair tie, not the girl’s face.
Because her sister had one just like it.
“See? You’re looking at me again.” The girl giggled, lowering her voice with a hint of smugness. “I knew from the moment I saw you we’re the same kind.”
“What kind?” Shen Baiyi asked, surprised.
“Same-sex lovers,” the girl said with a grin. “My gaydar is never wrong. You like girls too, don’t you?”
She touched her own face. “You like me, and I like you. Senior year is so dull, we could secretly date and help each other relieve some stress.”
Her last words were loaded with implication.
In response, Shen Baiyi reached out.
The girl’s eyes widened in excitement, thinking Shen Baiyi was about to caress her face but instead, Shen Baiyi bypassed her face entirely and went straight for the back of her head.
Her ponytail was seized, followed by a ruthless, forceful yank.
“Ah!”
The girl cried out in pain, immediately clutching the back of her head. “Are you insane?!”
Shen Baiyi held the hair tie she had ripped from the girl’s hair. Her movements had been rough, and strands of hair were tangled around the tie.
With a calm expression, she tossed it into the nearby bin for leftovers, ignoring the girl entirely. Someone like her didn’t deserve to wear the same hair tie as her sister.
The girl’s hair was now disheveled. Seeing Shen Baiyi completely disregard her, her face flushed with anger. “You think I won’t report you to the teacher?!”
“Report what?” Shen Baiyi asked, puzzled. “That you wanted to secretly date me?”
The girl’s face instantly paled, then flushed with embarrassment.
Shen Baiyi had no intention of wasting any more time on her. She turned back to wash her hands thoroughly, then walked past the girl without another glance.
But just as she stepped out of the cafeteria, someone called out to her:
“Shen Baiyi! Wait up!”
The voice was somewhat familiar. Shen Baiyi paused and turned to see the girl who had once helped her find her sister running toward her.
Her expression softened slightly.
“You’re actually at No. 1 High too?!” Zhu Xiaofu exclaimed, her face lit up with excitement. “How come I’ve never seen you before?”
“My sister just transferred me here.”
Shen Baiyi’s tone lifted slightly.
“Did you make up with your sister?” Zhu Xiaofu sighed in relief. “I’ve been meaning to visit you, but my mom’s been keeping a tight leash on me lately. She confiscated my phone and insists on driving me to and from school every day. I haven’t had any chance to see you.”
“It’s fine.” Shen Baiyi smiled. “I’m with my sister now. She treats me very well.”
She liked the phrase “made up.”
It made it seem as though she and her sister had always been on good terms, and that her sister’s initial rejection after she woke up was just because they’d had a fight.
Zhu Xiaofu studied Shen Baiyi’s expression, confirming that she did indeed seem better than before, and nodded. “That’s good.”
Suddenly remembering what she’d seen earlier, she lowered her voice. “Why were you talking to Lin Weiwei just now?”
So that girl was called Lin Weiwei?
Shen Baiyi frowned. “She was bothering me.”
“Oh no, she might have a crush on you. Stay away from her.” Zhu Xiaofu shuddered. “You probably don’t know this, but she’s a lesbian she’s dated several girlfriends already.”
Although Lin Weiwei’s earlier words had already confirmed this, Shen Baiyi couldn’t help but frown. “Women can date women? Is that what ‘lesbian’ means?”
“I think that’s what it’s called? I’m not really sure.” Zhu Xiaofu spoke vaguely. “Women can date women, but it’s probably pretty rare in real life. Don’t you think it’s kind of weird?”
Shen Baiyi fell silent.
She didn’t think it was weird, just curious.
If women could date women, what about her sister? Could her sister have a girlfriend too?
This question lingered in her mind all the way until evening self-study ended and her sister came to pick her up.
“How was your first day?” Zheng Yao initiated the conversation when Shen Baiyi remained quiet.
It was already 10:30 p.m. For Zheng Yao, nightlife was just beginning, but for a high school student, it was quite late.
Especially since, starting tomorrow, Shen Baiyi would have to wake up early for morning study sessions.
Morning study began at 6:30, what time would Shen Baiyi have to get up? Wait, what time would she have to get up to drive Shen Baiyi to school?
“It was okay.” Shen Baiyi glanced at Zheng Yao. “But my homeroom teacher isn’t Teacher Fu.”
“Oh, Teacher Fu mentioned that to me.” Zheng Yao wasn’t surprised. “She teaches the liberal arts class. I didn’t look into it properly earlier.”
Mainly, she’d assumed Shen Baiyi was a liberal arts student.
Despite her delicate, Lin Daiyu-like appearance, she’d chosen science, a stark contrast.
“Oh, okay.” Suppressing her disappointment, Shen Baiyi fixed her gaze on her sister’s lipstick-coated lips and cautiously asked, “Did you go on a date today?”
She hadn’t been wearing lipstick when she dropped her off at school that morning.
“Why do you ask?” Zheng Yao wasn’t the type to share everything. Narrowing her eyes, she said, “Mind your own business.”
Shen Baiyi deflated again.
After a full day at school, she could clearly feel how far behind she was. She had to work much harder than her classmates just to keep up.
Now, sitting in the car, listening to soothing music and surrounded by her sister’s familiar scent, she relaxed completely, barely able to keep her eyes open.
But she still wanted to talk to her sister a little longer.
“Today, a strange girl approached me,” she said casually. “She wanted to secretly date me.”
The next moment, the car came to an abrupt stop.
Zheng Yao’s face darkened. “What did you say?”
The car halted at the base of the apartment building. Zheng Yao looked serious and, before Shen Baiyi could speak, demanded sharply, “Did you agree?”
“No,” Shen Baiyi quickly shook her head, surprised by her sister’s strong reaction. “I ignored her.”
“Good that you ignored her.” Zheng Yao’s expression softened slightly.
“Does sister not like lesbians?”
Shen Baiyi pressed her lips together.
“You even know that term?” Zheng Yao was stunned.
“Zhu Xiaofu told me,” Shen Baiyi explained. “She’s the one who took me to the hospital before. She also goes to First High, but she’s in the class next to mine.”
That girl.
Zheng Yao recalled her and pinched the bridge of her nose. “It’s not that I dislike lesbians. Whether someone likes the same or opposite sex is their own freedom. What makes me angry is that she tried to tempt you like this right before the college entrance exams shaking your focus. That’s just malicious.”
If Shen Baiyi had actually been swayed and started thinking about dating all the time, how could she concentrate on studying?
“So, does sister like girls or boys?” Shen Baiyi asked curiously.
Zheng Yao instinctively started to answer but suddenly caught herself. “Why are you asking so much?”
Whether she liked boys or girls, what did that have to do with Shen Baiyi?
Zheng Yao spoke sternly, “Let me tell you, if you dare to date before the exams, I’ll break your legs.”
Though high school romances were perfectly normal she herself had once developed a crush on a classmate she quickly realized it affected her studies and decisively cut those feelings short.
So, her puppy love had been nipped in the bud before it could even sprout.
She hoped Shen Baiyi would do the same.
“If you want to date, you can do whatever you want after the exams,” Zheng Yao said firmly, trying to deter any premature romance. “After the exams, date whoever you want boys, girls, one or two, I won’t care. But these next few months, focus on studying. Understand?”
“Boys or girls, either is okay?”
Shen Baiyi blinked in surprise.
“Either is fine.”
Seeing Shen Baiyi’s thoughtful expression, Zheng Yao’s heart sank. Did this mean Shen Baiyi already had someone in mind?
She couldn’t help adding, “Of course, no accidents before you graduate from college.”
Date if you must, but protection is non-negotiable.
“I understand.” Shen Baiyi nodded earnestly. “Don’t worry, sister. I’ll only date one person.”
She wouldn’t be like Lin Weiwei, jumping from one relationship to another. If she ever dated, one would be enough.
“Now isn’t the time for this,” Zheng Yao said sternly, but before she could finish, Shen Baiyi cut in.
“I know. The most important thing right now is studying.” Shen Baiyi smiled, her eyes bright as stars in the dim car.
In the following days, she truly prioritized her studies.
Though Lin Weiwei still occasionally made her presence known, Shen Baiyi remained indifferent. Soon after, Zhu Xiaofu mentioned that Lin Weiwei had secretly started dating another girl.
Shen Baiyi paid no attention.
She was more concerned about her sister, who had been forced to wake up early for two consecutive days to drive her to school, her eyes puffy each morning.
So, when their half-day break arrived, Shen Baiyi suggested buying a bicycle herself.
“Zhu Xiaofu used to ride her bike to school every day.” As she spoke, Shen Baiyi glanced at Zheng Yao and sighed softly. “My sister wakes up early every day just for me, and it breaks my heart. I can’t even focus in class.”
Her expression was utterly genuine as she said this, making her words seem especially sincere.
Zheng Yao remained silent for a few seconds before asking pointedly, “Do you even know how to ride a bike?”
She hadn’t seen any bicycles at the Shen residence last year.
If there had been one, Shen Baiyi wouldn’t have needed to come begging to her to escape the village she could’ve just ridden away. Why would she need to hitch a ride?
Shen Baiyi was indeed caught off guard by the question, but she answered quickly: “If I don’t know, will you teach me, sister? You’re so amazing you must know how to ride a bike, right?”
After speaking, she fixed Zheng Yao with those starry eyes again.
Zheng Yao felt her scalp prickle under the gaze. “Stop looking at me like that.”
Ever since she agreed to let Shen Baiyi stay at her place temporarily, the girl had started using this expression on her constantly. Honestly, Zheng Yao wasn’t sure how much more she could take.
