My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 27
However, Shen Baiyi’s reaction was merely a brief daze before she nodded: “Okay.”
Zheng Yao: “…”
That’s it?
Is this really how she reacts?!
But considering Shen Baiyi had lost her memory and might have forgotten what exams represented, Zheng Yao sighed in relief. She stopped scrutinizing Shen Baiyi’s reaction and went to the study to print the test papers.
Teacher Fu, the math instructor, had sent over two math papers, with the remaining two being Chinese and English.
Having been away from such exams for so long, the densely packed words on the pages already gave Zheng Yao a headache.
Carrying the still-warm papers, Zheng Yao returned to find Shen Baiyi sitting properly at the dining table, with only a black pen in front of her.
She looked quite serious.
Zheng Yao handed her a math paper. This one didn’t have a time limit, so she simply said, “Do as much as you can.”
Shen Baiyi took the paper, skimmed through the content, and nodded. “Okay.”
Noticing she didn’t have anything to cushion the paper, Zheng Yao went back to the study, rummaged around, and pulled out a book to give her. “Use this as a pad.”
Shen Baiyi froze for a moment before her face lit up with a bright smile. “Thank you, sis.”
Her thin, pale face suddenly seemed radiant.
Zheng Yao forced herself to look away.
What was going on?
How could she find this scrawny, dark-skinned Shen Baiyi good-looking?
Had her standards really fallen so low after being socially isolated for so long?
She turned her head away, deciding it was best not to look.
But within seconds, curiosity gnawed at her again she wanted to see how Shen Baiyi was doing on the test.
Glancing over, she saw Shen Baiyi bent over the paper, her expression focused. There was something different about her when she studied seriously, a certain firmness that replaced her usual fragility.
Hmm?
Zheng Yao was surprised. Shen Baiyi seemed so absorbed that she even exuded an air of aloofness, as if keeping the world at arm’s length.
It felt unfamiliar.
Zheng Yao didn’t disturb her. Instead, she sat on the sofa, hugging Bubba while thoughtfully observing Shen Baiyi.
The girl clearly hadn’t forgotten everything her pen moved swiftly across the paper, yet her motions were steady.
There was a sense of confidence, as if she had everything under control.
Suddenly, Shen Baiyi frowned, her pen pausing.
Stuck on a problem?
Zheng Yao raised an eyebrow. The next moment, the cold detachment on Shen Baiyi’s face melted away as she looked up with pleading eyes. “Sis, I don’t have scratch paper.”
Zheng Yao’s heart skipped a beat.
She wasn’t sure how to describe what she was feeling.
Moments ago, Shen Baiyi had been distant and unapproachable, lost in her own world. But now, gazing at Zheng Yao, she looked like a pitiful kitten.
“I’ll get you some,” Zheng Yao replied.
Not wanting to dwell on her own conflicting emotions, she fetched a few blank A4 sheets from the study.
As she handed them over, she glanced at what Shen Baiyi had written.
Math problems didn’t require much writing just a few letters and numbers but even those looked bold and powerful, completely unlike her delicate appearance.
How strange. Wasn’t handwriting supposed to reflect one’s personality?
Shen Baiyi’s writing was the opposite of how she looked.
Without disturbing Shen Baiyi further, she returned to the sofa. This time, she didn’t keep staring at Shen Baiyi after all, she wasn’t actually an invigilator, and with Shen Baiyi being the only one at home, there was no way for her to cheat even if she wanted to.
Half-reclining on the sofa, she slowly mulled over the next steps.
Once Shen Baiyi was enrolled in No. 1 High School, most of the trouble would be resolved. Since the school was a boarding institution with only a few day students, Shen Baiyi could live on campus, and with teachers keeping an eye on her, Zheng Yao could rest easy.
Senior year didn’t offer many holidays getting half a day off per week would already be a blessing. If Shen Baiyi only spent half a day at home each week, it wouldn’t be unbearable.
At this thought, she let out a sigh of relief.
Her phone suddenly rang.
The sound was abrupt, and Zheng Yao quickly muted it before instinctively glancing at Shen Baiyi, who had clearly been disturbed and turned to look at her.
Zheng Yao stood up and glanced at the caller ID.
It was Teacher Fu.
After all these years, it seemed the teacher hadn’t changed her phone number. Zheng Yao answered the call as she walked toward her room. “Teacher Fu?”
“Zheng Yao, the school’s stance is that Shen Baiyi can come in first for an assessment. We’ll see how it goes, if her grades are too poor, transferring might be difficult. I’ll do my best, but the final decision still lies with the school.”
Zheng Yao wasn’t too surprised by this response. “Understood. Thank you for your help, Teacher Fu.”
“You’ve grown up to be so polite now back then, you were as mischievous as a monkey.” Teacher Fu chuckled before asking, “Did you have her do the test papers I sent? Once she’s finished, you can send them to me, and I’ll estimate her score.”
“Well, I’ve matured, haven’t I?” Zheng Yao laughed lightly before getting back on topic. “She’s already working on the papers. I’ll trouble you to grade them later, and I’ll visit you in person another day to thank you properly.”
Time had changed everyone.
Back then, Teacher Fu had been notoriously strict, but now her voice carried a gentler warmth. As for Zheng Yao herself, the sharp edges of her youth had been smoothed away by time, leaving her steadier and less impulsive.
After hanging up, Zheng Yao exhaled softly.
She could only hope everything would go smoothly.
She sat in her room for a while longer before finally heading out, figuring enough time had passed.
Somehow, Bubu had already scurried back to Shen Baiyi’s side, sitting on the same stool and pressing itself tightly against her back.
Zheng Yao clicked her tongue.
Didn’t it worry about Shen Baiyi leaning back and squashing it into a pancake?
Seriously, ever since Shen Baiyi arrived, this aloof feline overlord had turned into an affectionate little kitten.
Just as she stopped in front of Shen Baiyi, the girl set down her pen and carefully handed over the test papers with both hands.
“Sister, I’m done.”
A hint of nervousness lingered on her face.
So now she finally felt nervous?
Amused, Zheng Yao took the papers and skimmed through them. Every question had an answer filled in, prompting her to ask, “You knew how to do all of them?”
“Mm, but I’m not sure if they’re correct.” Shen Baiyi looked slightly embarrassed.
Zheng Yao examined a few problems closely. Though most of her high school knowledge had faded, she hadn’t forgotten everything. The answers Shen Baiyi had written seemed to have a pretty high accuracy rate.
“Go ahead and read the books first. Tomorrow I’ll take you to visit No. 1 High School. You might need to take a placement test then. If you pass, you can attend No. 1 High.”
“No. 1 High?” Shen Baiyi looked confused.
“Mhm.” Zheng Yao didn’t elaborate further, deliberately pointing to the books on the sofa. “Go work hard. If you don’t pass No. 1 High’s requirements, you’ll have to go back home.”
At these words, Shen Baiyi’s eyes instantly lit up.
This sounded… as if her sister might let her stay. Shen Baiyi didn’t dare ask for details, afraid the answer might break her heart.
But her gaze grew more determined. As long as there was the slightest possibility, she would give it her all.
Unaware of Shen Baiyi’s changed mindset, Zheng Yao only realized she was inexplicably nervous after sending the photos to Teacher Fu.
What the hell?
Shen Baiyi wasn’t even her child, why was she getting worked up over nothing? She’d never been this nervous even for her own exams.
Forcing those thoughts away, Zheng Yao tried to stay composed.
Actually, it didn’t have to be No. 1 High.
If not No. 1, there was No. 2. If not No. 2, there was No. 3. With so many schools, one would surely accept Shen Baiyi. If the teaching quality was poor, she could always hire private tutors.
There was no need to pressure herself so much.
Wait!
Shen Baiyi wasn’t her child, why should she feel pressured? She wasn’t pressured at all!
Just as she rolled angrily on her bed, her phone pinged with a notification. Had Teacher Fu already graded the test?
She grabbed her phone to check.
Unfortunately, the message was from Wang Yong.
Efficient as ever, he had already contacted Shen Baiyi’s previous school and sorted things out with the teachers.
All the paperwork was ready, they just needed the receiving school to process it in the system.
As Zheng Yao was about to reply, another message from Wang Yong popped up:
[Wang Yong: Baiyi was already planning to transfer schools before this. But her teacher couldn’t reach her afterward, and no school accepted her records.]
Reading this, Zheng Yao grew thoughtful.
So Shen Baiyi had come here to transfer schools. Did she have a preferred school in mind?
What if No. 1 High wasn’t the one she wanted? If Zheng Yao ended up making things worse, would Shen Baiyi resent her after regaining her memory?
That would be infuriating.
The more Zheng Yao thought about it, the angrier she got. She wasn’t about to waste effort on something thankless. With that in mind, she strode out of her room with a stern face.
In the living room, Shen Baiyi was studying intently.
Zheng Yao said darkly, “Shen Baiyi.”
Sensing something off in her tone, Shen Baiyi set the book down. “What’s wrong, Sister?”
“I heard you were already planning to transfer schools before losing your memory. Because of your amnesia, the transfer was put on hold, and no one knows which school you originally wanted. Now I’m giving you the choice, pick the school you want to attend.”
Let Shen Baiyi decide for herself, so she couldn’t blame Zheng Yao later.
Shen Baiyi frowned. Before Zheng Yao could finish listing the high schools, she declared firmly, “I want No. 1 High!”
Hearing this, Zheng Yao’s mood improved. She nodded. “Good taste.”
No. 1 High was the best school, after all.
If it claimed to be second, no other school would dare claim to be first. No.1 High School’s college admission rate had always been the highest in the province.
Zheng Yao’s attitude softened immediately, and Shen Baiyi’s eyes curved into crescents in response.
Given her circumstances, she definitely wouldn’t have attended No.1 High School originally, but her sister had chosen the best for her, of course she would listen to her sister.
Zheng Yao said, “No.1 High School has excellent teaching quality. Teacher Fu was my homeroom teacher in high school, a very responsible educator.”
“Mm.” Shen Baiyi nodded. “I trust Sister’s judgment. From now on, Sister can decide everything for me.”
This was exactly what Zheng Yao had been waiting to hear. She looked at her and asked, “I decide for you? Then what if you regain your memories.”
“I’ll only be even more grateful to Sister!” Before Zheng Yao could finish, Shen Baiyi beamed and pledged her loyalty. “I’ll definitely repay Sister properly in the future!”
