My Wife, So Fierce! - Chapter 22
Doesn’t this look like the expression of someone who enjoys eating?
Zheng Yao’s mind wandered. Though she was chewing her food, her attention was entirely on Shen Baiyi.
Then she saw Shen Baiyi, who had only eaten small portions during previous meals, suddenly glance at her timidly with a shy expression: “Sister, can I have a little more?”
Though she hadn’t outright praised how delicious the food was, the act of asking for seconds was undoubtedly the highest compliment she could give Zheng Yao.
Zheng Yao felt secretly delighted but deliberately kept a stern face, suppressing the upward curve of her lips as she snorted, “Eat if you want. Why ask me?”
What kind of bad habit was this?
Did she need permission just to get more rice? Did she think Zheng Yao was some kind of stingy, tyrannical landlady who mistreated others?
She couldn’t indulge this, absolutely not!
Zheng Yao’s words came out harsh, and Shen Baiyi’s eyelashes fluttered slightly.
She stood up silently to get more rice. It seemed her sister wasn’t very pleased her subtle attempt at flattery must have missed the mark.
She couldn’t help but feel a little disheartened.
Still, when she stood in front of the rice cooker, she scooped herself a small half-bowl.
This was the first meal her sister had personally cooked for her since she lost her memory. She couldn’t let her sister’s effort go to waste.
As she turned around with her bowl, her gaze suddenly paused.
Under the table, her sister’s slippered feet were lightly tapping to a rhythm, as if she were in high spirits.
Huh?
The gloom instantly lifted. Seizing the moment as she sat back down, Shen Baiyi’s eyes flicked to Zheng Yao’s face, keenly catching the hidden joy in her expression. Unconsciously, a small smile crept onto her own lips.
It wasn’t that she had failed to please her sister, it was just that her sister, like her, preferred to keep her feelings tucked away.
What an adorable sister.
Shen Baiyi’s expression softened as she made an effort to eat more. Even if her stomach felt like it might burst, it didn’t matter. She loved seeing her sister happy.
By the end of the meal, there was surprisingly little left.
When Shen Baiyi moved to clear the dishes, Zheng Yao stopped her with a raised brow. “Are you trying to make people think I enjoy mistreating patients?”
With such a heavy accusation thrown at her, Shen Baiyi was about to shake her head when her chin was suddenly pinched.
She froze, staring blankly at Zheng Yao.
Zheng Yao: “Shaking that broken head of yours all day, do you think it’s not injured enough?”
Shen Baiyi almost shook her head again.
The grip on her chin prevented her from doing so. She swallowed, clenched her fists, and said, “I didn’t.”
As she spoke, a faint blush spread across her cheeks.
Her sister smelled so nice.
And her hands were cool being held like this felt so good.
Unfortunately, the next second, the pressure on her chin disappeared.
A flicker of reluctance passed through Shen Baiyi’s eyes. She wanted her sister to touch her more. With that thought, she gazed longingly at Zheng Yao.
But her sister’s attention was elsewhere.
“Go sit somewhere else.”
Zheng Yao shooed her away impatiently, clumsily dumping all the dishes into the kitchen sink before rolling up her sleeves to wash them.
She hated the greasy, slimy feeling on her hands.
Disgusting and uncomfortable.
After much effort, she finally finished washing the few bowls.
After resting at home for a while, Zheng Yao took Shen Baiyi’s temperature again, this time, it was 37.9°C, slightly lower than before.
She couldn’t help but sigh in relief. Keeping to schedule, she drove to the hospital again for injections and dressing changes. Just like that, another afternoon passed.
“Sister, aren’t we going home?”
Noticing the way back seemed different from before, Shen Baiyi cautiously voiced her question.
Her heart was uneasy.
This world was unfamiliar to her. Since the first place she stayed after leaving the hospital was the Zheng household, she’d almost subconsciously come to regard it as her safest nest.
“Stop talking about going home all the time,” Zheng Yao resisted the urge to roll her eyes as she reminded Shen Baiyi, “That’s my home.”
Don’t make it sound like her home had become Shen Baiyi’s home too.
Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed the girl looking dispirited, as if those words had hurt her feelings, her expression full of worries. Zheng Yao’s heart softened, suppressing the impulse to make another sharp remark as she calmly explained, “Just buying some things.”
No sooner had she explained than Shen Baiyi’s gloomy expression instantly cleared up, responding brightly, “Okay!”
Zheng Yao fell silent.
She hadn’t even said what they were buying yet, why was the girl so happy already?
Too lazy to say more, she took the girl directly to the nearest mall. She’d bought plenty of undergarments for herself before, but this was the first time buying them for someone else.
For some reason, it felt awkward.
Inside the store, she pushed the girl forward, forcing composure: “Go pick a few.”
Shen Baiyi froze completely: “Me?”
“Who else?” Zheng Yao instinctively retorted.
Shen Baiyi had good eyesight. After seeing the price tags on those undergarments, she nervously gripped the fabric at her thighs. “No need, no need, Sister. Don’t waste your money.”
Her illness had already cost Sister so much money. If they bought more things, she worried Sister would dislike her even more.
“No need?” Zheng Yao looked at her strangely.
It was cold now, so wearing a coat outside could cover things up. But if the temperature rose in a few days and only a single layer was worn, was Shen Baiyi planning to go without anything underneath?
Though Shen Baiyi was young and had a slender figure like a bamboo pole, certain areas still had their curves. If she kept walking around like that in front of her, wouldn’t it be outright indecent?
Yet Shen Baiyi kept nodding: “No need.”
Zheng Yao: “…”
If Shen Baiyi hadn’t been injured in the head, she would’ve given her a good knock.
After a long silence, her tone turned firm: “I’m not discussing this with you.”
The moment Zheng Yao became stern, Shen Baiyi didn’t dare protest anymore and obediently went to pick something.
Finally, she picked the cheapest one and looked at Zheng Yao: “Is this okay?”
Zheng Yao glanced at it and laughed dryly: “That could fit your head inside. What do you think?”
Did she have no awareness of her own chest?
With barely two fistfuls of flesh there, did she need two pots to hold them? She should know her own measurements.
Shen Baiyi’s face flushed red with embarrassment as she awkwardly put it back.
After that, she picked more carefully not only checking the price but also looking down at her chest each time to consider whether it would be too big or too small.
Her speed was slower than a snail’s.
Zheng Yao grew impatient waiting and decided to pick for her instead. On Shen Baiyi’s first night staying over, after her shower, she’d only worn a thin T-shirt dampened by water. Her figure had been clearly visible then, and the overly pink hue of certain areas had left a vivid impression.
Grabbing two items at random, she tossed them to the shopkeeper: “Ring these up.”
With that meager amount of flesh, the smallest size would definitely be right.
Before paying, she casually picked up a few pairs of underwear for Shen Baiyi as well.
With Shen Baiyi’s petite frame and hardly any meat on her bones, wearing Zheng Yao’s disposable underwear would probably have her constantly worrying about them slipping off.
Since she was already here, might as well buy everything properly.
–
Because Zheng Yao personally bought clothes for her, Shen Baiyi felt like she was walking on clouds the whole way back.
Her eyes sparkling, she gazed at Zheng Yao driving, growing more and more delighted until she couldn’t help but whisper, “Sister, you’re so good to me.”
Just then, a truck roared past, drowning out Shen Baiyi’s words.
Zheng Yao only caught the word “sister” and glanced over suspiciously. “What did you say? Didn’t hear you.”
But Shen Baiyi was too embarrassed to repeat herself. She instinctively wanted to shake her head, then suddenly remembered the warmth when Zheng Yao had cupped her chin earlier.
Suppressing the urge to shake her head, she simply said, “It’s nothing.”
That her sister was good to her she knew it in her heart.
If Zheng Yao had heard, she’d probably get angry. Sister seemed very, very tsundere.
But luckily, Shen Baiyi was observant. She noticed all the kindness Zheng Yao showed her.
Since Shen Baiyi didn’t elaborate, Zheng Yao didn’t press further and drove them home.
Of course, newly bought undergarments couldn’t be worn right away. As a fragile patient, Shen Baiyi’s delicate clothes couldn’t just be tossed into the washing machine either. With a dark expression, Zheng Yao had no choice but to take the new underwear to the balcony herself.
“Sister, I can do it myself.”
Shen Baiyi stood awkwardly by the balcony door, her usually pale face now flushed red.
She knew Zheng Yao was good to her, but helping wash her underwear, it was so embarrassing.
Zheng Yao didn’t want to talk.
Turning on the faucet, she bent down to grab a basin for the small garments. After a long pause, she couldn’t help but say seriously to Shen Baiyi, “Don’t misunderstand. I’m not helping you.”
Shen Baiyi froze, watching Zheng Yao scrub her newly bought underwear. Was this not helping? Had sister’s tsundere nature reached the point of outright denial?
But whatever sister said went. She nodded earnestly. “Okay, I won’t misunderstand. Sister isn’t helping me.”
Zheng Yao genuinely didn’t think she was helping Shen Baiyi.
She was only washing these things to prevent Shen Baiyi from doing it herself, catching another cold, and ultimately causing more trouble for her.
Right now, she was just cutting off the possibility of Shen Baiyi getting sick at the source.
How could that count as helping Shen Baiyi?
Was she some kind of saint?
Eagerly helping a member of the Shen family?
The more she thought about it, the more justified she felt. Glancing at Shen Baiyi still watching her, she grew annoyed. “Are you, my supervisor? Why are you staring?!”
Even if they weren’t her own undergarments, being watched while washing them was seriously uncomfortable.
Scolded, Shen Baiyi wasn’t upset at all. Her heart swelled with sweetness, and her eyes shone as she looked at Zheng Yao. “Then I’ll wait for sister in the living room.”
