My Wife is a Frustrating Genius!!! - Chapter 50
“Young Mistress! Young Mistress, something terrible has happened! Please open the door quickly!”
Lu Jiahe, who had been lying on the outer side of the bed, rubbed her eyes upon hearing the noise, got up quietly, and tiptoed to the door to open it.
“What’s wrong?” Lu Jiahe asked as she opened the door, looking puzzled at the sight of Lu Er, whose face was bruised and swollen.
After being beaten, Lu Er had initially wanted to gather people to seek revenge on Xue Wanning. However, persuaded by his master, he decided to take advantage of his pitiable appearance to lure the other party out.
“Young Mistress, a group of masked men suddenly broke in and kidnapped the Second Young Master and Second Young Mistress. What should we do now? Should we report it to the authorities immediately?”
Lu Er pretended to be frantic as he looked at the person before him. To avoid being seen through, he even deliberately stomped his feet a couple of times.
Hearing this, Lu Jiahe furrowed her brows. She sized him up and down before asking, “Why didn’t you go to the Eldest Young Master?”
“I did, but the Eldest Young Master and Eldest Young Mistress are missing too. Young Mistress, please come with me to report this to the authorities. If anything really happens to the Eldest and Second Young Masters, the master will surely blame us!”
Lu Jiahe didn’t believe a word Lu Er said. With so many people in their party, why would he come directly to her? Although he looked as if he had just been beaten, everyone in the Lu residence knew the strained relationship between her, Lu Jiazheng, and Lu Jiahao. Even if he wanted to report to the authorities, he shouldn’t have come straight to her.
“Let’s go, we’ll check it out.”
Just as Lu Jiahe was about to refuse him, Cheng Yi’s voice rang out from inside the room.
“Did I wake you?” Lu Jiahe turned around and saw Cheng Yi walking toward her, draped in an outer robe.
Cheng Yi shook her head in response. “Where were they taken? Could it be that they’ve done something wicked and are now facing retribution from the heavens?”
Lu Er’s face turned pale and then green upon hearing Cheng Yi’s words. Who would want to hear their masters spoken of in such a manner?
“Why aren’t you saying anything? Did I hit the mark? Oh ho ho.” Cheng Yi covered her mouth, looking at the servant with a gleeful expression.
As she lay in bed listening to their conversation, she had already guessed that this was a trap set by Lu Jiahao for Lu Jiahe.
After hearing Guo’er recount the various injustices, Lu Jiahe had suffered in the past, Cheng Yi was genuinely curious to see what other tricks Lu Jiahao could pull.
Lu Er stared at Cheng Yi with a dark expression. He knew how sharp-tongued she was and how she had stirred up trouble in the Lu household before. His original plan for the night was to lure Lu Jiahe out and teach her a lesson. He hadn’t expected Cheng Yi to tag along as an unwelcome bonus.
After weighing his options silently, he agreed to take both of them to report the incident to the authorities.
“Wait outside for now. We’ll change our clothes and come out shortly.” With that, Cheng Yi pulled Lu Jiahe into the room and firmly shut the door.
“Are you really going?” Lu Jiahe followed her inside.
Cheng Yi picked up her outer robe and put it on. “Yes, I am.”
“But it’s not safe. For him to come looking for me so late, he must have set a trap waiting for me to step into it.” Lu Jiahe didn’t want Cheng Yi to take this risk with her and reached out to grab Cheng Yi’s hand as she was fastening her buttons.
“You’ve become quite clever, haven’t you?” Cheng Yi withdrew her arm upon hearing this, lightly tapped the other’s nose twice, and then explained, “I had already guessed everything you mentioned. In the past, you never fought back when they bullied you, but this time I’m determined to make them pay a little price.”
“What do you plan to do?” Lu Jiahe couldn’t figure out what the other was hinting at.
“Nothing much, I just want to see how they intend to mess with you.” After putting on her clothes, Cheng Yi casually picked up Lu Jiahe’s clothes and helped her into them.
“In a moment, you take him downstairs and wait for me. I’ll go find Guo’er and Lu An.” Cheng Yi instructed while buttoning up the other’s clothes.
Lu Jiahe nodded upon hearing this. “Bringing them along will be safer. Should we leave Guo’er behind? If we don’t return in time, she can report to the authorities.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll make the arrangements.” Cheng Yi straightened the other’s collar, then patted Lu Jiahe’s shoulder, signaling her to go downstairs first and draw the others away.
After the two parted, Cheng Yi waited in the room for a long while before running to the room where Guo’er and Lu An were staying and knocking on the door.
She informed them about Lu Jiahao’s mischief planned for that night and arranged what they needed to do later before finally feeling reassured enough to go downstairs. Unbeknownst to her, a shadow hiding behind the corridor had overheard every word they said.
“Young Madam, you’ve finally come down. What if something happens to the eldest and second young masters if we’re any later?”
Lu Er, who had been anxiously waiting in the hall, immediately approached as soon as he saw her come down.
Cheng Yi recoiled two steps at the sight of Lu Er as if he were an ill omen. “What does it have to do with me if something happens to them? Do you think I want to go looking for them? How presumptuous.” She shot him a disdainful glare, then walked over and sat down beside Lu Jiahe.
Lu Jiahe glanced sideways at her, her eyes seemingly asking if everything had been arranged.
Cheng Yi felt a pinch at her waist and instantly flushed red, grabbing the hand resting there tightly. She whispered into the “disgusting pervert’s” ear, “Your hand, what are you trying to do?”
Lu Jiahe froze at the sound; she had only meant to ask if the arrangements were in place.
“Has everything been taken care of?” Lu Jiahe mimicked the gesture, leaning close to the other’s ear to whisper.
Cheng Yi rolled her eyes in annoyance upon hearing this. “Yes!”
Lu Er, standing in front of the two, was utterly exasperated by their flirtatious whispering.
“Young Master, Young Madam, can we set off now?”
Cheng Yi raised her eyes and scrutinized Lu Er, then retorted irritably, “What’s the rush! Can’t you see I’m talking to my husband? Who gave you the right to interrupt?”
Lu Er took a deep breath to calm himself. The several burly men he had stationed in the grove had cost him a fortune. Their hourly rates were no joke!
“Young Madam, I’m just anxious to find the eldest Young Master and my Young Master.” No matter how much dissatisfaction he felt toward the two, he had to speak calmly.
“If you’re in such a hurry, go ahead by yourself. Why keep dragging us along? You’re so annoying!”
Cheng Yi actually wanted to go see the trap set for Lu Jiahe sooner, but for safety’s sake, she needed to give Guo’er and Lu An more time to prepare. She would only follow him after they returned with officers from the government office.
About half an hour passed. When Cheng Yi heard the sound of roof tiles falling, she finally stood up, took Lu Jiahe’s hand, and followed Lu Er out the door.
After the three left, Xue Wanning slowly walked from the corridor to the stairwell.
Squinting her eyes at the closed door, she muttered under her breath, “How dare a lowly servant like you cause trouble for my master! Seems like you weren’t beaten enough!”
The man standing behind Xue Wanning bowed slightly and said, “Aunt Xue, everyone is ready.”
Xue Wanning nodded upon hearing this, then took out a dagger and led the group out of the inn.
Once outside, hidden guards emerged from all directions and fell in behind Xue Wanning, giving off the intimidating aura of a group ready for a brawl.
On the road, Lu Er led the way, grinding his teeth in anger, thinking that once they reached the spot, he would definitely have those burly men teach this woman a lesson!
“Where are you taking us? The further we go, the more desolate it gets. This doesn’t look like the way to the government office at all!”
Cheng Yi had already guessed the answer, but thankfully, she had sent Guo’er ahead to bring back officers. Otherwise, who knew what might happen?
Lu Er spotted the markers he had left in the grove earlier that evening, then turned around and looked at the two with disdain.
“Hmph! You’ll get what’s coming to you soon!” With that, Lu Er quickly ran ahead, took out a firecracker he had hidden on his person, lit it, and threw it to the ground.
After a series of crackling sounds, rustling noises came from both sides of the grove, and five or six burly men emerged behind Lu Er.
Cheng Yi wasn’t afraid when she saw this. She still trusted the government officers. However, since Lu Er and his men hadn’t done anything to harm them yet, arresting them now wouldn’t accomplish much.
“Oh my! What are you trying to do? I’m so scared.” Cheng Yi widened her eyes, covered her mouth, and pretended to look terrified as she stared at the other party.
Lu Jiahe glanced sideways at her and whispered in her ear, “Isn’t that a bit too fake?”
“What do you know? I’m trying to provoke him,” Cheng Yi retorted quietly.
Lu Er, who had been stewing in anger for a while, grew even more furious at the sight. “Let’s see how long you can keep this up!” With that, he put on an air of authority and waved for the burly men beside him to charge forward.
But after just a couple of steps, a woman in white slowly emerged from the grove, followed by over twenty masked figures in black.
Cheng Yi, who had been about to signal Lu An to bring the officers, froze when she saw the person standing in the middle of the road.
What was going on? Was someone trying to steal their thunder?
“Heh, you’ve got some nerve, daring to bully my friend,” Xue Wanning said, crossing her arms. The dagger in her hand gleamed coldly, casting a chilling light on the faces of the burly men and Lu Er.
“Who are you? This is a matter for the Lu family. It’s none of your business,” Lu Er said, unnerved by the cold glint in the woman’s eyes and the large group standing behind her.
“What’s this? You came to me for help at noon, and now by evening you don’t recognize me? Hmph.” Xue Wanning stared coldly at Lu Er, her eyes emitting a frosty glare as if she wanted to slice him into a thousand pieces.
“Damn it!”
Lu Er thought to himself that with his young master backing him up, the person before him was merely a young lady from an insignificant family in Bianjing.
Without further hesitation, he grabbed a wooden stick and led several burly men charging forward.
Xue Wanning remained completely unruffled. She tilted her head and gently blew aside a stray strand of hair. Drawing her dagger, she and her companions engaged in a fierce brawl with the opposing side.
