My Wife is a Frustrating Genius!!! - Chapter 47
The moist and dry touches clung together like magnets, and when they parted, it was like Velcro, still connected by lingering threads, unwilling to separate.
A strange sensation rippled through her heart. At this moment, the little chick felt as if she were on fire, turning into a turkey.
The turkey nervously dug her claws into the sheets beneath her, her eyes red as she gazed at the pair of cherries hanging like fruit from a branch.
The slumbering ferocious beast, deep in sleep, remained completely unaware of the peculiar events unfolding on her body. She even smacked her lips twice.
The turkey, who had been staring intently at her, froze at the movement, not daring to make a sound. Only when she heard the steady breathing resume did she gather her courage and swallow the cherries whole.
“Mmm. Hmm.”
In her dream, the ferocious beast, locked in combat with an opponent, suddenly felt her mouth being suctioned by an empty water bottle. Wide-eyed, she stretched out her arms, desperately trying to push the person away.
In reality, the turkey, eyes closed and savoring the delicious taste, felt the beast beneath her pushing against her shoulders. Startled, she sprang up from the bed.
Pressing her lips together and holding her breath, she stared intently at Cheng Yi beside her. Seeing the other woman struggle a few times before finally relaxing her hands, she cautiously leaned in to check if she had truly woken up.
Half an hour later, Lu Jiahe, sitting by the bed, stood up and walked to the table. She poured herself a cup of tea and drank it, hoping to extinguish the raging flames burning within her.
Oh my god! What have I done?
Lu Jiahe lightly tapped her head a couple of times, convinced that she must have been drunk to have committed such a ‘disgusting’ and inhuman act.
Early the next morning, Cheng Yi got up and went to the small kitchen to prepare breakfast. When she returned to the bedroom with the food and saw that Lu Jiahe was still asleep, she approached to wake her.
“Stop sleeping, wake up. Drink the hangover soup before you go back to sleep.” Cheng Yi noticed the heavy dark circles under Lu Jiahe’s eyes and wondered if she had sneaked out to do something mischievous while she was asleep.
Having slept for less than two hours, Lu Jiahe groggily opened her eyes. The moment Cheng Yi’s face came into view, her cheeks flushed bright red.
Cheng Yi frowned at the exaggerated reaction, especially puzzled by the sudden blush. Could it be alcohol poisoning from drinking too much?
“Get up and drink the hangover soup.”
Cheng Yi grabbed Lu Jiahe’s arm and pulled her up from the bed, then handed her the now-cooled hangover soup.
“I learned how to make this specially from Cui’er. Tell me how it tastes.” Cheng Yi looked at her expectantly.
Lu Jiahe pressed her lips together and took the offered bowl. However, she had no mind to savor the flavor of the hangover soup. What mattered now was shaking off the memory of secretly kissing Cheng Yi the night before, which kept replaying in her mind.
Something’s wrong, very wrong.
Cheng Yi watched Lu Jiahe shaking her head and swaying, her frown deepening. “What’s wrong with you? Do you have a headache?”
“Huh?” Lu Jiahe looked up at Cheng Yi as if waking from a dream, her expression full of confusion.
Cheng Yi’s probing gaze swept over every inch of Lu Jiahe’s body, making the one who had secretly misbehaved the night before even more flustered.
To prevent her secret from being exposed, Lu Jiahe quickly picked up a spoon and took a sip of the hangover soup. She glanced furtively at the other person, and seeing Cheng Yi still staring at her with that same expression, she decided to go all the way, lifting the large bowl, she downed the entire soup in one go.
“Delicious, delicious.” Lu Jiahe wiped the corner of her mouth, then stood up and placed the empty bowl back on the table.
Such odd behavior could never escape Cheng Yi’s sharp eyes. However, seeing that the other party clearly intended to hide something from her, she didn’t press further. After all, it was obvious Lu Jiahe didn’t want her to know, and they weren’t in any kind of intimate relationship that warranted prying.
“Since you’re resting today, let’s go out and buy some things later. In a couple of days, we’ll be heading to the capital,” Cheng Yi said, turning back to the table to serve two bowls of porridge.
Lu Jiahe sat back down in her chair. “Sure, what do you want to buy? I’ll treat you today.” As she spoke, she picked up an egg, peeled it, and placed it in Cheng Yi’s bowl.
Cheng Yi looked at her in surprise. “You’re treating me? Do you even have money?”
She thought to herself that she only gave Lu Jiahe twenty taels of silver each month, and aside from buying books, how could she possibly have spare cash to buy anything for her?
Could she have a secret stash?
At this thought, Cheng Yi narrowed her eyes and began scrutinizing her. “Lu Jiahe, you haven’t been hiding private savings behind my back, have you?”
Clatter!
Lu Jiahe’s hand slipped, and the spoon fell into the bowl.
“No, don’t talk nonsense,” Lu Jiahe replied, completely avoiding Cheng Yi’s gaze. She pretended to remain calm as she picked up the spoon again to eat her porridge, but her mind was racing, wondering when Cheng Yi had discovered her hidden money.
“Hmph!” Cheng Yi didn’t believe a word of it. “I give you twenty taels of pocket money every month. You spend more than half on books, and occasionally you buy high-quality writing supplies. How could you possibly have money left for anything else?”
Lu Jiahe’s jaw dropped in disbelief. How could Cheng Yi possibly know how much she spent on books?
Seeing that Lu Jiahe remained silent, Cheng Yi added, “Lu Jiahe, don’t forget our agreement. If I find out, all your money will be confiscated.”
“Ah.” Lu Jiahe frowned, looking at her incredulously. “Wait, can you first tell me how you know how much I spend on books and other things?”
“No.”
Cheng Yi refused without a second thought. After all, Lu An was now her informant placed by Lu Jiahe’s side. She didn’t want to ruin their friendship, nor did she want to lose her source of information about Lu Jiahe in the future.
The refusal was so blunt that Lu Jiahe was left unsure whether she should admit that her father had long since given her all the money she earned from copying books outside.
“I advise you to confess sooner rather than later. If I get angry, you know the consequences,” Cheng Yi said, putting down her chopsticks and putting on a stern face, pretending to be on the verge of anger as she stared at Lu Jiahe.
Scared, scared.
With a reluctant expression, Lu Jiahe stood up and walked to the wardrobe. She crouched down, retrieved a thick stack of banknotes hidden in a secret compartment at the bottom, and placed them neatly in front of Cheng Yi.
“It’s all here. I haven’t spent any of it,” she said.
Cheng Yi had guessed that the other party must have hidden some money, but she never expected it to be this much!
“Where did this money come from?” Cheng Yi stared at the other in astonishment, thinking to herself that this money must have been saved up before they got married.
Lu Jiahe stood frowning to the side, hesitating for a long while before finally speaking up. “I earned this from copying books at the bookstore before. Later, my father thought I was embarrassing him and confiscated it. He just returned it to me a few days ago, telling me to keep some money for emergencies.”
Cheng Yi never actually intended to take the money for herself. She just wanted to use this incident to scare Lu Jiahe a little, hoping to make the other more honest with her in the future.
Cheng Yi crossed her arms and deliberately put on an angry expression as she looked up at Lu Jiahe.
“Lu Jiahe, your father gave this to you a few days ago. Why didn’t you mention it? Don’t tell me you were planning to spend it on someone else?”
“No, no!” Lu Jiahe quickly waved her hands in denial. “Actually, I originally wanted to use this money for our wedding. At the time, I asked my father for it, but he refused. After he gave it to me a few days ago, I thought I’d just set it aside and save it for when we might need it urgently.”
As Lu Jiahe spoke, Cheng Yi carefully observed her expression. Seeing that she didn’t seem to be lying, Cheng Yi didn’t plan to press further. Still, the other’s words clearly showed a lack of trust in her.
“Never mind, you keep the money yourself. There’s no need to spend it on me.”
“No!”
If this had happened before last night, Lu Jiahe would have happily put the money away without a second thought. But after what happened last night, Cheng Yi’s status in her heart had skyrocketed, making her want to give everything she had to the other.
Seeing this, Cheng Yi raised an eyebrow, thinking, “Interesting.”
“We’re married now. We’re a couple. This money belongs to both of us. If you want it, you should take it.” Lu Jiahe didn’t dare voice her true feelings, but through her actions, she tried to convey that Cheng Yi mattered to her.
“I don’t want it,” Cheng Yi flatly refused. “This money wasn’t earned after we got married, so it’s only right that you keep it yourself.”
Lu Jiahe frowned and scratched her head. “But we’re married now, and we even made that three-part agreement.”
Hearing this, Cheng Yi felt a surge of anger. “So, you do remember our three-part agreement? If I hadn’t found out, were you just going to keep hiding it from me?”
Exposed, Lu Jiahe didn’t dare talk back. She sat down on a stool by herself, hanging her head in reflection.
“Hurry up and put the money away.” Cheng Yi stuffed the stack of banknotes back into the wooden box, then warned Lu Jiahe, “Even though I’m not taking the money, I’ll check from time to time to see if any of it goes missing. If you can’t explain where the money went, I won’t let it slide.”
“Put it away now.” Cheng Yi tossed the box into Lu Jiahe’s arms, signaling with her eyes for the other to quickly store the money and come eat.
After the morning’s little drama, Lu Jiahe resolved to always be honest with Cheng Yi about everything from now on. It wasn’t because she was afraid of her, but because she feared the other might get angry and leave her.
After breakfast, the two of them took Lu An and Guo’er out to shop for supplies they would need on their journey to the capital.
“Mmph” sob, sob.
“What’s that sound?” Cheng Yi had just stepped out of the pastry shop when she heard faint sobbing coming from a nearby alley.
Lu Jiahe also looked in the direction the other person was staring. “I don’t know. Should we go take a look?”
Cheng Yi furrowed her brows in thought for a moment, then nodded and led the group into the winding alley.
